“They treated us like animals,” said an Ecuadorian fisher who survived an attack on the Don Maca.

President Donald Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and US Southern Command have repeatedly taken to social media to brag about deadly boat bombings supposedly targeting drug traffickers in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean for nearly eight months. On Tuesday, survivors of some alleged US strikes on fishing boats accused American forces of torture.

The Ecuadorian fishing boat La Fiorella “went up in smoke” on January 20, and “the eight fishermen aboard have not been seen since,” Camila Lourdes Galarza reported for Drop Site News on Tuesday. “Now, 36 survivors of two Pacific attacks fitting a similar profile alleged that they were abducted and tortured by American forces and taken by boat all the way to El Salvador before being returned to Ecuador.”

The journalist spoke with attorneys, relatives, and survivors, including Hernán Flores, captain of La Negra Francisca Duarte II, which was bombed by a drone with a yellow cylinder on March 17. Flores said: “A lot of us had wounds all over our bodies from the explosion. One young man was bleeding so much he filled the floor of our lifeboat with blood… The drone had flown through our cabin window, torn my nephew’s foot so bad you could see flesh and bone, and made the boat’s roof cave in on the back of my neck. A few seconds later, an explosion shook the boat, causing a terrible ringing in our ears. Out of exasperation, the guys threw themselves into the water, some without life jackets, even the ones who don’t know how to swim.”

The survivors made their way to a blue boat with “spear” on the hull, full of armed, blond, English-speaking men in camouflage uniforms—who drew their guns, handcuffed the fishers, put hoods over their heads, and held them on the vessel’s “scorching metal deck for over 24 hours, blistering their skin,” Galarza reported. They were only given a bottle of water, and “all but one fisherman were denied medical attention, despite the severity of what they had just endured.”

They were eventually returned to Ecuador, where Trump has recently deployed US forces for a joint campaign targeting “narco-terrorists.” However, first, they were turned over to El Salvador’s Coast Guard—which, on April 3, also intercepted 20 more Ecuadorian fishers with “vision and hearing loss, bruised limbs, and perforated arms.”

According to Galarza, those fishers had been aboard the Don Maca, and “they reported a strikingly similar account of an alleged attack by US soldiers: a bombarded boat, a round of bullets, and no due process.” Sebastián Palacios, one of the survivors allegedly held hostage for eight days, said that “they treated us like animals.”

Galarza noted that US SOUTHCOM directed questions about all three incidents to Ecuador, whose Port Authority hung up after hearing that a phone call requesting comment was from journalists.

Harriet Barber got a similar response from SOUTHCOM for her Tuesday reporting on the Don Maca attack in The Guardian. The journalist spoke with survivors, including Palacios, as well as an attorney representing the crew, Fernando Bastias Robayo of the Human Rights Council.

“A US vessel intercepted them and forced them aboard. Once they were detained, their fishing boat was blown up,” said the lawyer. “They were arbitrarily hooded and later abandoned on the Salvadorian coast. Any apprehension followed by incommunicado detention constitutes an enforced disappearance.”

“It was a form of psychological torture, not knowing what’s really going to happen to your life and having your face covered,” he added.

Palacios told Barber that “I get scared in the middle of the night. I can’t sleep well. My ears still hurt… I think that’s it for me. I’m done with fishing. Going back out there is impossible. I thought they were going to kill us.”

“If there were no drugs aboard those boats, it’s a hugely embarrassing ‘false positive’ for US intelligence at a time when that intelligence is being used to kill people, no questions asked.”

Tuesday’s reporting came just two days after SOUTHCOM announced on social media that “Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by designated terrorist organizations… along known narco-trafficking routes in the Caribbean,” killing three alleged “male narco-terrorists.”

Sunday’s strike brought the death toll from Trump’s boat-bombing campaign to at least 180, according to The New York Times. The Intercept’s tally is 181, while the Washington Office on Latin America believes 182 people are dead. Critics of the campaign have accused the US administration of “war crimes, murder, or both.”

Responding to Trump’s latest confirmed attack, Amnesty International USA on Monday condemned “three more murders at sea” and declared that “Congress must act to stop these bombings.”

So far, both chambers of the Republican-controlled Congress have refused to pass war powers resolutions aimed at halting Trump’s boat strikes. Similar measures targeting his aggression toward Venezuela and Iran have also failed to advance.

Risk of ‘Significant and Severe’ Food Crisis If Strait of Hormuz Remains Shut, Says Top UN Official

Trump’s Iran War has caused “a massive disruption in the supply chain of fertilizers,” and “clearly we are seeing a crisis emerging” in the agricultural industry, said one UN expert.

A top United Nations official on Tuesday warned that there is a real risk of a global food crisis if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed to shipments of fertilizer.

Jorge Moreira da Silva, executive director of the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), said in an interview with UN News that roughly one-third of global fertilizer shipments flow through the Strait of Hormuz, and its closure has caused “a massive disruption in the supply chain of fertilizers,” and “clearly we are seeing a crisis emerging” in the agricultural industry.

The UN official also emphasized the need for a fast resolution to the crisis to prevent catastrophic food shortages as tensions continued to escalate in the strait in recent days, with both the US and Iran seizing vessels in the area.

“We can’t wait until everything is fixed to at least get something fixed in time for the planting season,” he emphasized. “The planting season has already started, and in most countries in Africa it will end in May. So, if we don’t get some solution immediately, the crisis will be very significant and severe, particularly for the poorest countries and for the poorest citizens.”

While poorer nations are most vulnerable to fertilizer supply shocks, wealthy nations like the US are taking a hit as well.

survey released last week by the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) found that 70% of US farmers say the price of fertilizer has grown so high that they will not be able to afford all they need for the 2026 planting season.

Analysis conducted by AFBF found that, since President Donald Trump illegally launched his war with Iran in late February without any congressional approval, “nitrogen fertilizer prices have risen more than 30%, while combined fuel and fertilizer costs have increased roughly 20% to 40%.”

AFBF also found that the cost of widely used urea fertilizers “have increased by 47% since the end of February, marking the largest month-to-month percentage increase” ever.

Zippy Duvall, president of AFBF, warned that “without the necessary fertilizers, we’ll face lower yields and some farmers will reduce acres altogether, which will impact food and feed supplies.”

An analysis published by Bloomberg’s Tracy Alloway on Wednesday found that “all the signs are already pointing to higher prices” for food in the coming weeks thanks to Trump’s Iran War.

“Bank of America’s Commodity Inflation Trendspotter for food and beverage companies shows March input costs up a whopping 373 basis points to 7.9% year-on-year,” explained Alloway. “That jump was driven mostly by diesel and heating oil, meaning we haven’t even seen much impact from things like higher plastics prices or fertilizer just yet.”

Alloway pointed to the skyrocketing price of urea as particularly worrisome for food prices, as once Midwestern farmers start paying more for the fertilizer, “you start seeing higher prices for everything from actual grains to beef, chicken, eggs, ethanol,” and more.

The bottom line, Alloway wrote, is “rising fertilizer prices are now hitting farmers, and eventually those will translate into higher wholesale food prices which will (assuming higher costs are passed onto consumers) eventually land at grocery stores too.”

“The inflationary impulse doesn’t arrive all at once,” she added, “it builds.”

Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil was killed on Wednesday evening in an Israeli strike while carrying out her work in the town of Tayri, southern Lebanon.

Minutes before her martyrdom, Khalil posted on Facebook that Lebanese Civil Defence teams in Rmeish had treated a wounded fighter who arrived in Ain Ebel from Bint Jbeil, before contacting the Lebanese Red Cross to transfer him to a liberated area.

She said Israeli forces stationed in Debel became aware of the wounded man and demanded, in a phone call with paramedics, that he be handed over, threatening to target the ambulance. The paramedics refused.

Khalil added that the fighter later decided to walk to Debel to surrender himself in order to protect the lives of the medics and local residents, as surveillance drones flew at low altitude.

Lebanon witnessed tense hours earlier on Wednesday after Israeli shelling hit the town of Tayri, targeting journalists Amal Khalil and Zeinab Faraj during field coverage. Rescue teams faced difficulties reaching the area, with Israel reportedly preventing paramedics from accessing Khalil’s location for several hours.

Following extensive contacts and movement, ambulance teams, escorted by the army, were able to enter Tayri. Reuters confirmed that Khalil’s body was found inside the damaged building.

Palestinian citizens of Israel commemorated the 78th anniversary of the Nakba (Palestinian catastrophe) under the slogan “Their Independence Day is Our Nakba,” amid restrictions imposed by Israeli authorities on public events.

The commemoration included marches and activities in several depopulated villages, alongside widespread calls for participation. However, the Israeli authorities banned the central unity march, organised annually since 1998 by the Association for the Defence of the Rights of the Displaced.

Former head of the High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel, Muhammad Barakeh said in a press statement that “the current situation is not related to exceptional security circumstances, but rather reflects a historical reality that has persisted since the establishment of Israel at the expense of the Palestinian and Arab presence.”

“This land has its own authentic narrative and its people who have never left its heart. Their connection to it transcends time, governed by longing and belonging” he added.

Barakeh said that the presence of Palestinians in their depopulated villages is “a natural act reflecting their right and a clear message that they are always destined to return.”

The Association for the Defence of the Rights of the Displaced announced that this year’s “March of Return” will be held digitally via social media platforms at 6:00 PM, after suspending the in-person march due to strict restrictions and systematic obstacles.

In a statement, the association said the decision followed months of preparation under conditions that limited participation and imposed restrictive permit requirements, stressing that suspending the in-person march does not affect the Palestinians’ historical right of return to their lands.

At least 27 journalists have been killed in Israeli attacks in Lebanon since March 2, along with many others wounded, the Lebanese Press Syndicate Editors said Thursday.

In a statement, the syndicate condemned Israel’s targeting of a group of journalists in the southern town of Tayri on Wednesday, in which reporter Amal Khalil was killed and her colleague Zeinab Faraj was wounded.

The syndicate said Khalil had previously received death threats from the Israeli army.

“With her killing, the number of journalists and media workers killed has risen to 27, in addition to a large number of injured,” the statement said.

The syndicate called on the Federation of Arab Journalists to work with international and Arab press unions to support Lebanese journalists amid deliberate Israeli attacks.

It also urged journalists working in the field in Lebanon to exercise caution, avoid high-risk areas and coordinate with the Lebanese army and other official security forces in areas exposed to Israeli attacks, including UNIFIL, the Lebanese Red Cross and local relief teams, “to avoid any unexpected fatal risk.”

The syndicate said Israel’s actions against Lebanese civilians, particularly journalists, “have exceeded all limits,” calling on the Lebanese government to take urgent action at international bodies and file a legal case against Israel.

During Wednesday’s attack, Israeli forces prevented the Red Cross and Lebanese army forces from reaching the two journalists and targeted a road linking Tayri and Haddatha to block rescue teams, according to the state news agency NNA.

Since March 2, Israeli attacks on Lebanon have killed 2,475 people, wounded 7,696 and displaced more than 1.6 million, according to official figures.

A 10-day ceasefire announced by the US on April 16 is set to expire Sunday and has been violated daily by Israel.
