The European Union on Monday officially launched the “Team Gaza Initiative,” bringing together €883.6 million ($1 billion) in financial contributions to support early recovery efforts in the Palestinian enclave, Anadolu reports.

The initiative was announced ahead of the second ministerial meeting of the Palestine Donor Group, hosted by the European Commission in Brussels and co-chaired by EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Suica and Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa.

The meeting brought together representatives from 65 delegations, including EU members, partner countries, international organizations and financial institutions, to coordinate support for Gaza’s early recovery and discuss progress on the Palestinian Authority’s reform agenda.

The “Team Gaza Initiative” brings together contributions from the European Commission, European Investment Bank, World Bank, and governments including Spain, Denmark, the UK, Germany, Norway, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Japan, Switzerland, Sweden and Belgium.

Australia and Canada have also expressed interest in joining the initiative, according to the European Commission.

The EU said the initiative aims to coordinate early recovery projects in Gaza in line with the Gaza Peace Plan and UN Security Council Resolution 2803, while complementing broader international efforts.

The funding will support projects aimed at restoring basic services for civilians, including water and sanitation infrastructure, debris and solid waste removal, health services, energy systems, agriculture and food security.

The statement also highlighted new financial commitments through the EU’s PEGASE mechanism, which channels assistance to the Palestinian Authority under transparency and oversight standards.

The EU and several European countries signed €41.7 million in new contribution agreements through PEGASE, including support from Spain, Denmark, Cyprus, Ireland, Greece, Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and Belgium.

This comes on top of €310 million committed by the European Commission through PEGASE for 2026 and 2027.

EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib on Monday described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “unbearable,” calling for humanitarian access to the enclave and greater political engagement from Israeli authorities, Anadolu reports.

“I have no words to describe this situation. Nine months after the so-called ceasefire, shelling continues, disease is spreading, people are dying. The humanitarian situation is unbearable,” Lahbib told reporters ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

She said humanitarian organizations must be allowed to operate in Gaza, arguing that “there is a clear lack of political will and engagement from Israeli authorities.”

“We must have access to Gaza, we must have the possibility to reopen,” she said.

Lahbib also defended the role of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, saying UNRWA was “essential” and that its staff, including “thousands of doctors, nurses, teachers,” were “part of the solution.”

“Everything goes against international humanitarian law,” she said.

Lahbib said EU foreign ministers would discuss an options paper presented by the European Commission, including measures related to Israeli settlements. “We see more and more violent settlers grabbing territories, gaining territories with the support of the Israeli army,” she said.

Turning to Lebanon, Lahbib said the situation in the south remained “very fragile” despite the ceasefire, with attacks continuing. She warned against “a similar situation to Gaza” emerging in southern Lebanon, with “a protracted crisis, immense suffering, and immense humanitarian needs.”

The UK government listed Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terror group on Monday, using new powers introduced under the National Security (State Threats) Act, according to media reports, Anadolu reports.

In a written statement to parliament, Security Minister Angela Eagle said the government had “identified activity linked to the IRGC involving threats to life and intimidation on UK soil,” Sky News reported.

The government also designated the Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right (IMCR), which Sky News described as being linked to Iran.

The decision followed the fast-tracking of the National Security (State Threats) Act, as promised by Prime Minister Keir Starmer in April.

Following the designation, it is now a criminal offense to invite support for or express support for the groups, assist them in carrying out UK-related activities, engage in conduct likely to materially assist them, or accept or retain material benefits provided by or on their behalf, according to the report.

Activists staged a protest outside the office of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall near the historic Brandenburg Gate in Berlin on Monday

Activists staged a protest outside the office of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall near the historic Brandenburg Gate in Berlin on Monday, Anadolu reports.

The blockade was organized to protest arms production that activists said was linked to attacks on Palestine and Lebanon.

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg joined the demonstration and said: “We are doing this because it is our duty to protest against injustice and to stand up against genocide.”

“Stop Rheinmetall new factory and stop shipping weapons to Israel. Stop the genocide,” Thunberg added.

Berlin police intervened during the protest and detained Thunberg, the footage showed.

May and June heatwaves killed about 2,700 people in England and Wales, data suggests

Extreme heat led to 440 deaths a day during June peak, say scientists, with climate crisis ramping up temperatures

The heatwave that affected England and Wales in June killed about 440 people a day during its three-day peak, scientists have estimated. Across the whole of the June heatwave, plus the one in May, about 2,700 people lost their lives prematurely.

The data starkly illustrates the danger of extreme heat, which is being supercharged by the climate crisis. More than 40% of the people affected would not have died without the 1.4C of human-caused global heating to date, according to the analysis. For comparison, about four people die each day as a result of road traffic collisions and about 35 a day because of alcohol and drug use, according to government statistics.

Extreme temperatures will worsen as continued fossil fuel burning pumps pollution into the atmosphere, making cuts in emissions and measures to protect people from global heating urgent, say experts.

“These are big numbers and we don’t want to see this many people dying,” said Dr Clair Barnes, at Imperial College London, who led the analysis. “We’ve reached the point where the heat is so extreme that we can’t help but acknowledge the impacts it has.”
