ISRAEL’S far-right Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that the United States’ announcement of the so-called ceasefire in Gaza advancing to its second phase is largely symbolic.
Israeli forces have killed more than 400 Palestinians since the ceasefire came into force on October 10, raising questions about whether phase two of the plan will bring any more respite for Gazans.
Speaking on Wednesday night with the parents of the last Israeli hostage whose remains are still in the coastal enclave, Mr Netanyahu said that the announcement of a governing committee of Palestinians as part of the second phase was merely a “declarative move,” rather than, as described by US envoy Steve Witkoff, a sign of progress.
Israeli police officer Ran Gvili’s parents had earlier pressed Mr Netanyahu not to advance the ceasefire until their son’s remains were returned, Israel’s Hostage and Missing Families Forum said earlier that day.
Mr Netanyahu told Mr Gvili’s parents that his return remained a top priority.
The announcement of the ceasefire’s second phase marked a significant step forward but left many questions unanswered.
They include the membership of a proposed apolitical governing committee of Palestinian experts and an international “board of peace.”
The committee’s composition has been co-ordinated with Israel, said an Israeli official speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared Tuesday before the District Court in Tel Aviv for the 70th time as part of his ongoing corruption trial, Anadolu reports.
Independent Israeli journalist Orly Barlev, who has closely tracked the case since its outset, said the latest session marked the 70th day of Netanyahu’s courtroom testimony.
“Today marks the 70th day of testimony by the defendant Netanyahu, with questioning continuing in Case 4000,” Barlev wrote on the US social media company X.
The hearing comes as Israeli society remains divided over Netanyahu’s request for a presidential pardon from President Isaac Herzog, a move that has drawn both political backing and sharp criticism.
Netanyahu formally submitted the pardon request on Nov. 30 last year, seeking relief from the corruption charges without admitting wrongdoing or withdrawing from public life.
Since the trial began, Netanyahu has consistently denied all allegations. Under Israeli law, however, a presidential pardon can only be granted following an admission of guilt.
The prime minister is facing charges in three separate cases, commonly known as Case 1000, Case 2000 and Case 4000. The indictments were filed in late November 2019 by then-Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit.
Case 1000 centers on allegations that Netanyahu and members of his family received costly gifts from wealthy businessmen in exchange for political favors.
Case 2000 involves claims that Netanyahu held talks with Arnon Mozes, publisher of the privately owned Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, in an effort to secure favorable media coverage.
Case 4000 focuses on accusations that Netanyahu granted regulatory benefits to Shaul Elovitch, former owner of the Walla news website and a senior executive at Bezeq telecommunications company, in return for positive press.
Netanyahu’s trial has been underway since 2020 and remains unresolved. He continues to dismiss the charges, portraying them as a politically motivated effort to force him from office.
Beyond the domestic proceedings, Netanyahu is also facing international legal scrutiny. In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants against him over war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza, where more than 71,000 people have been killed, mostly women and children, and over 171,000 others injured in a brutal assault since October 2023.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer departs 10 Downing Street, London, to attend Prime Minister’s Questions at the Houses of Parliament, January 7, 2026
Keir Starmer has told Labour MPs that all his air miles are helping boost living standards in Britain.
Defending himself against charges that he spends too much time on overseas trips, the Prime Minister claimed that his numerous talks with foreign leaders helped deal with the cost-of-living crisis.
He told a meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) earlier this week that it was vital he was “in the room” for international talks on trade and defence, which impacted the economy.
Since becoming Prime Minister Sir Keir has been on 40 overseas trips, or more than two each month, and it has become apparent that he is far more comfortable with international diplomacy than dealing with domestic politics.
Many of those visits have been about prolonging the Ukraine war and ramping up military spending.
He told his despondent MPs: “We are moving into a world that is very different to the one most of us grew up in.
“And in a world this volatile — you have to be on the pitch. You have to be in the room to tackle the issues working people care about.
“The cost-of-living crisis will not be solved by isolationism. You cannot deliver peace in Ukraine without being in the room. And you do not secure trade terms for companies like JLR by putting gesture politics first.”
…
Sir Keir may be hoping that his emphasis on global turmoil will give MPs pause before moving to replace him, with a coup anticipated after the local and devolved elections in May.

Green Party’s Bristol Central MP Carla Denyer on BBC Question Time.
Reacting to President Trump’s threats towards Greenland, Green MP Carla Denyer said
“Buoyed up by his imperialistic adventures in Venezuela, where he trampled over international law, Trump is now eyeing up Greenland.
“A year of pandering to the President has had no restraining effect whatsoever. It is time for Keir Starmer and government ministers to show some backbone.
“They must make clear that the UK will not tolerate an attack on Greenland and that they will stand up for international law and state sovereignty. Not selectively, but wherever such violations take place and whoever is committing them – whether that be Putin in Ukraine, Netanyahu in Gaza, or Trump in Venezuela, and now potentially in Greenland.
“The Green Party will always reject “might is right” authoritarianism, where military power is used to trump sovereignty and the rule of law. Diplomacy, cooperation and peacebuilding efforts must be strengthened.”
I’ve neglected to thank everyone who helps me, so thank you. I think that the point may be – of course – is that our interests coincide or are the same. I would expect that the majority of people want the common understanding of democracy, international law upheld, war criminals exposed, prosecuted and convicted, the climate crisis urgently addressed. These are not abstract notions and are instead the way that it should be.
The excessively rich are identified as the obstacle to this happening. There is plenty of money, it’s just that the rich are hoarding it all.
Orcas discuss how Trump was re-elected and him being an obviously insane, xenophobic Fascist.
Donald Trump is a puppet of the rich, Netanyahu and Putin and insane through senility. He is clearly so easily manipulated and a huge liability to everyone who depends on him. Can’t he be locked up or otherwise contained?

Keir Starmer is totally committed to supporting Israel’s genocide and relentlessly attacks the human right of those that oppose this. It is the one issue that defines him. He and his fellow genocide enablers should be prosecuted and locked up.
Keir Starmer objects to criticism of the IDF. He asks how could anyone object to them starving people to death, forced marches like the Nazis did, bombing Gaza’s hospitals and universities, mass-murdering journalists, healthworkers and starving people queuing for food, killing and raping prisoners and murdering children. He calls for people to stop obstructing his genocide for Israel.
There have been a few articles recently arguing that the UK Labour Party should change course to survive. I think that it’s too late for that, it’s been an anti-democratic force for decades. I certainly have no intention of relenting.
