UN human rights experts on Thursday called on Germany to end what they described as the “criminalising, punishing, and suppressing” of legitimate Palestinian solidarity activism, warning that the country’s actions undermine fundamental democratic freedoms, Anadolu reports.

“We are alarmed by the persistent pattern of police violence and apparent suppression of Palestine solidarity activism by Germany,” the experts said in a statement.

They urged Berlin to uphold its human rights obligations and “to respect and facilitate the right to peaceful assembly for everyone without discrimination.” The experts stressed that “non-violent protests are protected and must not be punished,” and that dissenting political views “must not be subject to undue restrictions based on content.”

According to the experts, Germany has intensified restrictions on pro-Palestinian protests since October 2023 – when Israel’s relentless offensive on Gaza began – even though most demonstrations have been peaceful. Protesters have voiced demands such as halting arms exports to Israel, ensuring humanitarian access to Gaza, and recognizing the state of Palestine.

They said demonstrators in Berlin had been met with police violence, arrests, and bans, including cases where people were detained simply for chanting “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”

The experts said German courts have issued contradictory rulings on whether the slogan constitutes protected speech or condones violence.

“Germany must support, not suppress, actions aiming to stop atrocity crimes and genocide,” the experts said. “No circumstances can justify unnecessary and excessive police violence or unjust criminalisation for exercising fundamental freedoms.”

Critics say Germany’s foreign policy stance has been mirrored by a domestic campaign to silence pro-Palestinian voices. Over the past two years, authorities have banned hundreds of rallies, canceled cultural events and academic panels, and denied visas to prominent international speakers critical of Israel.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, a staunch ally of Israel, has repeatedly emphasized Germany’s historical responsibility for Israel’s security, rooted in its Nazi past and the Holocaust.

Chancellor urged to unfreeze housing benefit and publish government’s long-delayed homelessness strategy as figures show  more than 172,000 children are growing up in temporary accommodation

A NEW record high of more than 172,000 children are living in temporary accommodation in England, almost enough to fill Wembley Stadium twice over, new government figures revealed today.

Official data shows numbers have risen in each quarter since 2021, reaching 132,410 households in temporary accommodation as of the end of June.

This is up 1.2 per cent from the previous three-month period and 7.6 per cent from the same time last year.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government said 84,240 of those households included children.

Separate government data showed 8,732 people were sleeping rough in England in June, up from 8,309 a year earlier.

Campaigners are urging Chancellor Rachel Reeves to unfreeze housing benefit in next month’s Budget and to publish the government’s long-delayed homelessness strategy.

Crisis chief executive Matt Downie said: “Tragically, we have now become totally accustomed to seeing record levels of children growing up in temporary accommodation.

“So we have to ask, as living costs increase and the supply of social homes recedes, when this will end?”

He said raising housing benefit “would enable more people and families to stay in their homes” and called for “a new generation of social homes” to help families “escape poverty and see a brighter future.”

One in five families trapped in temporary accommodation for over five years, new figures show

New figures released by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government show that one in five families with children living in temporary accommodation in England, and one in three in London, have been there for five years or longer.

The data shows a record 172,420 children are now living in temporary accommodation. Much of this housing is overcrowded and lacks basic facilities such as kitchens and laundry access.

Campaigners warn that these conditions have serious impacts on children’s health and wellbeing, with at least 74 child deaths linked to temporary accommodation over the past five years.

Housing groups say rising rents are trapping families in temporary accommodation, as Local Housing Allowance has failed to keep pace with the private rental market.

ONS data shows that average private rents have risen by 8.5% since April 2024, when housing benefit rates were last updated.

The shortfall is placing severe pressure on local councils, which are spending millions each year either on temporary accommodation itself or incentive payments to landlords to take on homeless tenants.

London Councils has warned that several boroughs are at risk of bankruptcy due to escalating costs.

Tom Darling, director at the Renters’ Reform Coalition, said: “The fact that one in five homeless families have been trapped in temporary accommodation for five years or more is a moral stain on society.

“TA barely merits the term accommodation. Cramped, unhealthy and lacking facilities, it is totally unsuitable for families with children, particularly for long periods of time.”

He added: “The Renters’ Rights Bill will deliver welcome protections for tenants, but it will not address the affordability crisis that is keeping families trapped in homelessness and pushing councils to the brink of bankruptcy.

“The Government must cap rent increases to stop rents from outpacing wages or inflation, and in the longer term we need a National Affordable Renting Commission to make renting genuinely affordable.”

Jamal Rushdi, spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the Arab League, has expressed concern over the statement made by the leader of the British Conservative Party during a parliamentary session held yesterday to discuss the ceasefire agreement.

Rushdi stated that the statement contained several inaccuracies and clear bias against Palestinians. He pointed out, for example, that the British politician’s claims about the involvement of UNRWA in terrorism align entirely with the Israeli narrative on the matter. This narrative, he noted, lacks any factual basis and disregards the conclusive findings of a United Nations investigation, which highlighted UNRWA’s indispensable role in assisting Palestinian refugees.

The spokesperson added that it was regrettable that the opposition leader’s statement made no mention of the immense suffering of Palestinians caused by what he described as Israel’s unprecedented and brutal war of extermination. He said the statement reflected full alignment with Israeli in what he called a blatant act of bias.

Rushdi reaffirmed the Arab League’s appreciation for the stance of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government, which, he said, demonstrates balance and a sincere desire to address Britain’s historical responsibility towards the Palestinian cause. This, he explained, includes recognising the State of Palestine and supporting efforts to create a credible and irreversible path towards establishing it.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Wednesday handed over the remains of 45 deceased Palestinians to health authorities in Gaza, Anadolu reports.

The ICRC said it facilitated the transfer “as a neutral intermediary, as requested by, and with the agreement of, the parties.”

Local health and forensic authorities in Gaza are now responsible for identifying the remains, the ICRC said, adding it provides technical guidance when necessary.

“Local health authorities in Gaza have confirmed the number of deceased received today is 45,” it noted.

The ICRC said it would not offer further comment regarding the identities of the deceased.

Jailed Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti sustained rib fractures after being beaten in Israeli prisons, the Prisoners’ Media Office said Wednesday, Anadolu reports.

The Hamas-run office said on Telegram that Barghouti was beaten by Israeli prison guards while being transferred from Ramon Prison in southern Israel to Megiddo Prison in the north in mid-September.

The imprisoned leader lost consciousness and suffered a fracture in four ribs, it added.

Barghouti, 66, a senior leader of President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah group, is one of the most prominent and popular figures in Palestinian politics.

He has been serving five life sentences in Israeli prisons since 2002 on charges related to the Second Intifada, which began in 2000.

Last week, US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the first phase of a plan he laid out on Sept. 29 to bring a ceasefire to Gaza, release all Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the entire Gaza Strip. The first phase of the deal came into force on Friday.

Phase two of the plan calls for the establishment of a new governing mechanism in Gaza, without Hamas’ participation, the formation of a multinational force, and the disarmament of Hamas.

Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have killed nearly 68,000 Palestinians in the enclave, most of them women and children, and rendered it largely uninhabitable.
