Swiss Cheese

IT is no surprise that so many big business leaders have come out in support of the Labour Party.

It reflects two things. One is the banal fact that Labour looks like winning, and it does corporate leaders no harm at all to be able to say “I backed you at the election” when sitting down opposite ministers in a couple of months’ time to beg for assistance of one sort or another.

Keir Starmer and shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves have bent over backwards to place themselves in the service of monopoly capitalism.

That has been reflected in their rhetoric, pledging the “most business-friendly government” in British history, which is a very high hurdle, but is a clear indication of their aspiration.

Sometimes this is extended by a commitment to be “pro-worker and pro-business” as if there were never a conflict between the two.

As Unite’s Sharon Graham says, Labour’s New Deal for Working People now “has more holes than a Swiss cheese.” One can only hope that unions will be able to plug some of those gaps in Labour’s manifesto negotiations.

But the pro-capitalist turn goes much wider than safeguarding the bosses’ sacred right to exploit labour. It has permeated all aspects of the Starmer-Reeves approach.

The 120 signatories to the Labour-backing letter will have noticed that their corporation tax rate is not going to rise under Reeves.

They will have noticed that there is to be no wealth tax — of the kind Starmer once promised — under the impending Labour dispensation.

They will have noticed that outside a railway sector already under semi-control by the state, there is to be no extension of public ownership.

And they have noticed that despite the campaign slogan of “change” in fact Labour is offering nothing of the sort, but rather “economic stability.” That might have marked a point of divergence from the excitable Liz Truss but it hardly differs from Rishi Sunak, whose election boast is that he has restored — economic stability.

Scotland could be a ‘clean energy superpower’ say Labour

RWE’s Gwynt y Mor, the world’s 2nd largest offshore wind farm located eight miles offshore in Liverpool Bay, off the coast of North Wales, July 26, 2022

MORE than 69,000 new green jobs could be created as Scotland turns into a “clean energy superpower” under a Labour government, the party has claimed.

Labour controversially dropped plans for a £28 billion Green New Deal earlier this year, promising a Green Prosperity Plan instead which would invest £8.2bn, raised from windfall tax receipts on oil and gas profiteers, to form a new state-owned power company based in Scotland.

The party said boosting investment in green technologies such as wind, hydrogen and controversial carbon capture could generate as many as 53,000 jobs in Scotland, with 16,000 more being created by a drive to insulate thousands of homes which still fall below energy efficiency standards.

Scottish Green co-leader Lorna Slater remained unconvinced, however, saying: “Labour has already dropped its flagship green transition plan before a single vote has been cast, and has refused to rip up a single Tory oil licence.

“They are betraying future generations and selling off our North Sea to fossil fuel giants.”

dizzy: I am expecting Keir Starmer’s Red Tories / Labour party to fail to address the climate crisis by committing to any real green policies and instead to promote it’s flaccid GB Energy fudge to confuse and distract from the urgent need to transition from fossil fuels.

Ed Miliband and the Labour party full of shit on climate.

Just Stop Oil protesting in London 6 December 2022.

Ed Miliband has inspired an article in today’s Guardian: Just Stop Oil ‘alienates people’ from its cause, says Ed Miliband

I’m not concerned with the headline topic but Miliband makes claims that need to be fact checked:

“If every country in the world adopted Labour’s position [on deciding not to issue new oil and gas licences] it would have a transformative effect on the debate,” he said.

Is it Labour’s position not to issue new oil and gas licences? If it is, are they likely to abandon that position since the Labour Party seems to abandon every policy to be more Tory? Why position instead of policy? Because position can be abandoned easier?

Miliband said the party’s plans to ban new oil and gas licences are “the most progressive position of any major country in the world” but that the transition in the North Sea has to be properly managed to protect those working in existing fields.

So, it’s already qualified by Miliband in the very next paragraph? “… the transition in the North Sea has to be properly managed to protect those working in existing fields.” sounds like you and the Labour party are full of shit Ed.

later edit: What about Rosebank? Are the Labour party going to stop Rosebank? The Labour party are definately full of shit on climate if they’re going to let Rosebank continue.

Rishi Sunak on stopping Rosebank says that any chancellor can stop his huge 91% subsidy to build Rosebank, that Keir Starmer is as bad as him for sucking up to Murdoch and other plutocrats and that we (the plebs) need to get organised to elect MPs that will stop Rosebank.
