Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on Friday forced his way into Ofer Prison, west of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, in a visit marked by intimidation and abuse of Palestinian detainees, Anadolu reports.

Ben-Gvir entered the prison accompanied by senior police officials, including Police Commissioner Yaakov Shabtai, days before the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Israel’s Channel 7 reported, saying that stun grenades were fired near Palestinian prisoners’ cells during the visit.

Ben-Gvir, known for publishing inflammatory videos targeting Palestinian detainees and repeatedly threatening them, has openly boasted about tightening prison conditions for Palestinians since taking office in late 2022.

During his tour, he said the changes imposed on prisons were “not enough” and vowed to push for legislation allowing the execution of Palestinian prisoners.

“This is not a luxury hotel. It is a real prison,” Ben-Gvir said, expressing satisfaction with what he described as a “fundamental change” in detention conditions.

Conditions for Palestinian prisoners have sharply deteriorated under Ben-Gvir’s tenure amid severe restrictions, widespread abuse and noticeable weight loss among detainees.

Palestinian and Israeli rights groups say former prisoners released in recent months have reported systematic torture, sexual violence, starvation and medical neglect, with some showing signs of severe psychological trauma.

In November 2025, Israel’s parliament advanced at first reading a bill introduced by Ben-Gvir’s far-right Otzma Yehudit party that would allow the death penalty for Palestinians convicted of killing Israelis. The proposal still requires second and third readings to become law, and no vote date has been set.

More than 9,300 Palestinians are currently held in Israeli prisons, including about 350 children, according to figures through early February.

Rights organizations have repeatedly warned that abuse of Palestinian detainees has intensified since October 2023, alongside Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza.

Israel arrests 22,000 Palestinians in West Bank, Jerusalem since start of the genocide war

Israel has arrested around 22,000 Palestinians in the West Bank, including Jerusalem, since the start of what has been described as a war of genocide, according to the Ramallah-based Palestinian Prisoner’s Club.

The rights group said the figure covers all cases of arrest during this period, including those who remain in detention and those who were later released. It described the number as an unprecedented record for arrests over just two and a half years.

The Prisoner’s Club stressed that the total does not include arrests in the Gaza Strip, which it said amount to thousands, nor arrest campaigns in the territories occupied in 1948.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the group added that arrest operations in the West Bank are continuing at an increasing pace. It said that at least 40 Palestinians were arrested between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, including four women, one of them a child, as well as former prisoners.

The organisation said the arrest operations have been accompanied by what it described as serious and unprecedented violations. These include severe beatings, organised intimidation against detainees and their families, widespread damage to homes, and the seizure of vehicles, money and gold jewellery.

It also accused Israeli forces of destroying infrastructure, demolishing the homes of prisoners’ families, taking relatives hostage, using detainees as human shields, carrying out field executions, and using arrest campaigns as cover to expand settlements in the West Bank.

The Prisoner’s Club further stated that extensive field interrogations have affected thousands since the start of the war, adding that soldiers committed abuses during these interrogations which it said were no less serious than torture carried out in official detention and interrogation centres.

Over 2,000 Britons served in IDF as 47,000 dual and multi-nationals enlisted during Gaza genocide

More than 2,000 British nationals served in the Israeli military during its genocide in Gaza, according to new data published by Declassified UK.

The investigative outlet reported that figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request submitted to the Israeli army show that 1,686 British-Israeli dual nationals and a further 383 individuals holding British, Israeli and at least one additional nationality were serving in the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) as of March 2025. The combined total stands at 2,069 UK nationals.

The British contingent forms part of a much larger group of foreign nationals serving in the Israeli military. The data indicates that 43,194 dual nationals and 3,913 multi-nationals were enlisted in the IDF, amounting to 47,107 soldiers holding Israeli citizenship alongside at least one other nationality.

The largest cohort comes from the US, with 12,135 US-Israeli dual nationals and 1,207 US multi-nationals — a total of 13,342 Americans. France follows with 6,127 dual nationals and 337 multi-nationals. Significant numbers were also recorded from Russia (5,067), Germany (3,901), Ukraine (3,210), Romania (1,675) and Poland (1,668).

The findings have prompted renewed calls for the UK authorities to examine whether British nationals serving in the IDF were involved in violations of international law during Israel’s military campaign assault in Gaza, which has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians and is the subject of proceedings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for genocide.

Last year, a 240-page dossier naming ten British nationals was submitted to the Metropolitan Police’s war crimes unit by the Public Interest Law Centre and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights. The complaint alleged involvement in the targeted killing of civilians and aid workers, as well as indiscriminate attacks on civilian areas.

Human rights barrister Michael Mansfield said at the time that “no one is above the law”, while solicitor Paul Heron stressed that where credible evidence exists linking British nationals to grave breaches of international law, authorities have a duty to investigate.

The UK Foreign Office declined to comment on the data, according to Declassified, and confirmed it does not collect information on the number of Britons serving in the IDF.

The publication of the figures also raises wider legal questions. In January 2024, the ICJ stated that there was a plausible risk of genocide in Gaza and reminded states of their obligation to prevent such crimes. In July 2024, the court further advised that UN member states must refrain from assisting Israel in maintaining its unlawful occupation of Palestinian territory.

Legal observers have also pointed to the Foreign Enlistment Act of 1870, which prohibits British citizens from fighting for a foreign state at war with another state with which the UK is at peace. Campaigners argue that the scale of British participation revealed in the data warrants urgent legal scrutiny.

Civil Defence in Gaza: 8,000 bodies under rubble, 3,000 missing

The Civil Defence in Gaza has said that around 8,000 bodies remain under the rubble of destroyed buildings across the territory, despite ongoing search and rescue efforts.

In a statement on Thursday, spokesperson Mahmoud Basal said Civil Defence teams are working under very difficult conditions with limited resources, which makes it hard to reach many affected areas.

He added that more than 3,000 people are still missing, with no confirmed information about whether they are alive, have died, or been detained.

He pointed out that hundreds of bodies had decomposed or lost their features during the search operations, due to the prolonged time and the difficulty of removing the rubble amidst a lack of heavy equipment and necessary technical capabilities.

UN official refuses calls to resign, denounces states’ silence over genocide in Palestine

The UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, has refused calls to resign and rejected criticism from states that fail to condemn genocide in Palestine. She stressed that she will not accept “lessons from countries that violate international law and fail to condemn genocide.”

Earlier on Wednesday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot called for the resignation of the UN rapporteur over comments she made allegedly targeting Israel at a conference on Gaza.

 In an interview with Al Jazeera Mubasher, she urged Western governments to discuss the reports she has submitted on alleged Israeli violations, rather than target her personally. She said the debate should focus on the content of her reports, not on her as an individual.

Albanese stated that she is facing what she described as a smear campaign because of her condemnation of what she called Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza and the West Bank. She said: “The campaign of attack against me is nothing compared to the genocide suffered by the Palestinians.”

Responding to accusations that she had exceeded her UN mandate, Albanese said she had not overstepped her authority. She argued that the intensity of the criticism reflects the impact of her human rights work.

She also said she does not receive a salary for her role and that she has faced personal pressure and sanctions. However, she added that she draws strength from the suffering of Palestinians, especially mothers in Gaza, and that she seeks to inspire others to stand up for justice.

In a related development, Albanese said remarks by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot confirmed her position on what she described as “special protection for Israel”. She said he should have condemned Israeli crimes instead of attacking her.
