Thousands of Israelis have signed a petition urging Defence Minister Israel Katz to immediately close military detention centres where Palestinian detainees are reportedly being tortured, leading to the deaths of dozens.

According to Anadolu Agency on Tuesday, over 4,100 Israelis signed the petition, launched by the movement Zazim – Popular Campaign in cooperation with Israel’s General Committee Against Torture.

Zazim – Popular Campaign is Israel’s largest mass campaign movement, with more than 400,000 members. The petition stated that signatories include both Jewish and Arab Israelis.
One of the most notorious military detention centres is Sde Teiman in southern Israel. It has been used by the Israeli army to hold Palestinian detainees from the Gaza Strip since the start of the war on 8 October 2023.
The petition said: “Sde Teiman is not an exceptional case. The Israeli army acknowledges that dozens of Palestinian detainees have died in military detention centres.”
“These centres can be closed with a single administrative decision by the defence minister. There is no justification for their existence, and as Israeli citizens, we will not accept torture camps on our land.”
On Monday, the Israeli organisation Physicians for Human Rights reported that at least 98 Palestinians have died in Israeli detention centres and prisons over the past two years.
Of these, 52 died in military detention centres, including 29 at Sde Teiman alone.
The report noted that many of these deaths were caused by violence, mistreatment, and medical neglect.

He asks how could anyone object to them starving people to death, forced marches like the Nazis did, bombing Gaza's hospitals and universities, mass-murdering journalists, healthworkers and starving people queuing for food, killing and raping prisoners and murdering children. He calls for people to stop obstructing his genocide for Israel.

Sheikh Ikrima Sabri, the Imam of al-Aqsa Mosque, appeared before the Israeli Magistrate’s Court over alleged charges linked to terrorism.

Residents of Jerusalem gathered around Sheikh Sabri as he arrived at the court in a wheelchair. He is 86 years old and faces accusations of incitement to terrorism, including for offering condolences for the late Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

On Tuesday, his lawyer Khaled Zabarqa said the Israeli court session would be “procedural”, stressing that the case formed part of what he described as a “systematic political pursuit”.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Zabarqa, who represents Sheikh Sabri, added: “The Israeli Magistrate’s Court in Jerusalem will today read out the indictment, and we will request further evidence from the court, which we believe is necessary to refute these charges.”

He continued: “We will take the indictment and will not respond to it immediately. We will request another date from the court to present our reply. Therefore, this session is procedural rather than substantive.”

Green Party responds to ‘extreme, inhumane’ immigration proposals

Bristol Central’s Green Party MP, Carla Denyer, has responded to changes to the UK’s asylum policy, that would see asylum seekers having to wait 20 years to apply to settle permanently, and be subjected to regular reviews every two-and-a-half years, meaning people could be returned to their home nation if it is deemed safe.

Denyer said “This is a new low from this government – plumbing the depths of performative cruelty, in hopes that the public won’t notice they have no answers to the real issues facing communities across this country.

“Confiscating the belongings of people fleeing war and violence, and trapping refugees in perpetual limbo, where even those who have been granted asylum would have the constant threat of deportation hanging over their heads, undermining integration and making it impossible to put down roots. These are extreme, inhumane proposals from a desperate and failing government.

“The only way to prevent people making dangerous crossings by small boats is to open safe and managed routes for people to claim asylum in the UK. There are hints Mahmood could introduce such schemes – a sensible government would focus on this workable policy rather than divisive gimmicks.”

Labour asylum plans ‘will tear children from their homes’

HOME SECRETARY Shabana Mahmood is seeking “to use children as a weapon” in her asylum plans, a Labour peer who came to Britain as a child refugee has warned.

The government is preparing to intensify the removal of entire families after unveiling a fresh set of harsh measures on Monday evening.

A document laying out the rules claimed that asylum-seekers are using their children to “thwart removal.”

Now a consultation will look at stripping financial support from families with under-18s if they had been refused asylum.

The government says it will offer “financial support” to encourage families to leave voluntarily, but still escalate an “enforced return” if they refuse.

Lord Alf Dubs, who fled Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia and arrived in England on Kindertransport, accused Ms Mahmood of using “children as a weapon,” describing it as a “shabby thing.”

He said: “I’m lost for words frankly. My concern was if we remove people who have come here, what happens if they’ve had children in the meantime?

“What are we supposed to do with the children who are born here, who’ve been to school here, who are part of our community and society?”
