Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza City aims to render the area uninhabitable as part of a broader plan of ethnic cleansing, UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories Francesca Albanese warned Monday, Anadolu reports.

Speaking at a press briefing in Geneva, Albanese said Israel’s offensive on Gaza’s largest urban center amounts to “full destruction.”

“The ongoing assault to take the last remnant of Gaza will not only devastate the Palestinians but also endanger the remaining Israeli hostages,” she said.

Albanese said the attack on Gaza City is already displacing hundreds of thousands. “Israel is bombing using unconventional weapons… trying to forcibly evacuate the 800,000 Palestinians who were seeking refuge there. Why? Because this is the last piece of Gaza that needs to be rendered unlivable before advancing the ethnic cleansing of that piece of land. And then probably they will move to the West Bank,” she said.

She stressed the offensive is not about securing territory but about erasing its viability for residents. “It’s happening already. It’s not that this is a future and uncertain event … destroying entire neighborhoods, remnants of buildings where people were seeking shelter,” she said.

Calling the operation “unlawful,” the rapporteur said Israel has no legal grounds to continue its military presence in Gaza. She cited the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion requiring Israel to dismantle settlements, withdraw troops, stop exploiting Palestinian resources, pay reparations, and facilitate the return of displaced Palestinians.

Albanese warned that some states are attempting to shift focus away from these legal obligations, without specifying which countries.

The Israeli army has continued a brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip, killing nearly 65,000 Palestinians since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, which is facing famine.

More than 110,000 people join Tommy Robinson-organised protest featuring racist conspiracy theories and hate speech

More than 110,000 people have taken part in a far-right street protest organised by the activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, known as Tommy Robinson, in what is thought to be the largest nationalist event in decades.

Marchers travelled to London by train and coach for a demonstration, which was billed as a “festival of free speech”, but by its conclusion had amplified racist conspiracy theories and anti-Muslim hate speech across Whitehall.

The scale of the protest vastly outgrew police estimates resulting in tense and at times violent clashes between protesters and police.

The Metropolitan police said at least 25 people were arrested and 26 officers were injured, including four who were seriously hurt. Marchers were arrested for a range of offences, including affray, violent disorder, assaults and criminal damage.

The crowds were addressed by Elon Musk, who dialled in via video link and spoke of “the rapidly increasing erosion of Britain”, before calling for the dissolution of the UK parliament.

Morning Star Editorial: The left must defeat the far right, because Labour certainly won’t

The far right will not be beaten unless its racism is challenged: Labour echoes it.

It will not be beaten either unless we offer different answers to people’s accurate perception that Britain is becoming a run-down, ramshackle country of enfeebled services, collapsing infrastructure and falling living standards. Labour clings to Thatcherite orthodoxies on privatisation, unfettered banks and all-powerful markets long after the public have seen through the rip-off.

The right have the wind in their sails because their narrative, that immigration is the main cause of this country’s ills, has been allowed to crowd out others. We need public campaigning on the real issues: the cost of living, the council cuts. The NHS: where a Trump trade deal forcing up medicine prices is ideal ground to battle a far right that idolises him.

As these arguments are not being made by Labour, they need to be made by others.

People take part in a Stand Up to Racism protest in Epping, Essex, July 27, 2025

LEFT MPs Zarah Sultana and Diane Abbott and senior trade unionists will lead thousands of counterprotesters’s “far-right festival of hate” in London on Saturday.

A thousand people attended an online event to launch the Women Against the Far Right campaign on Thursday night, in the run-up to the march organised by Stand Up To Racism, with hundreds from the campaign set to join the march.

Ms Abbott, who is currently suspended from the Labour Party, said: “The far right are a menace to the whole of society.

“Their first targets, asylum-seekers and Muslims, are broadening to all migrants, black people and on to trade unionists, all religious minorities and anti-racists. They must be stopped.”

Ms Sultana said: “The far right are not welcome on our streets. We see through their lies.

“Their politics of hate and division make our communities weaker and women less safe.

“That’s why thousands of us are marching on Saturday — to show that fascists will be met with resistance wherever they spread their poison.”

TUC hits back at banking boss who suggested public-sector pay should be curbed because the economy falling

TUC general secretary Paul Nowak said that while the government has “taken the right approach” by investing in public services and infrastructure, “the job of securing growth is far from over — and more support is needed to see that investment sustained in the long term.”

“That’s why it’s time for a grown-up conversation about taxing wealth and financial institutions,” he said.

“It’s only right that banks, gambling companies and the wealthiest in our society contribute their fair share to fund our schools, hospitals and local authorities.

“The government needs to ensure it can repair and rebuild our vital public services along with wider critical national infrastructure.”

Mr Nowak also called on the Bank of England to further Bank of England to “ease the pressure on household budgets and to make it more affordable for businesses to invest.”
