The Trump administration “is going to be spending just as much time running Venezuela as they are running America,” Sen. Chris Murphy said in an address to voters. “That’s terrible news for you.”

Democratic lawmakers were stunned as they emerged from a briefing Wednesday with Trump administration officials on the White House’s plan for Venezuela following the US invasion last week—a meeting that marked the first time all members of the US Senate and House were briefed on the details of the attack and President Donald Trump’s intentions going forward in the South American country.

“We learned a lot, I’m glad we had the briefing,” a visibly shaken Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) told reporters. “But this is going to be a very rough ride for the United States.”

The senators and later members of the House were briefed by officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Attorney General Pam BondiCIA Director John Ratcliffe, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Dan Caine.

As Rubio told the press after the meeting, the lawmakers learned about a three-step process the White House is planning, starting with an effort to “stabilize” Venezuela by seizing and selling 30-50 million barrels of oil and then controlling how the proceeds are dispersed.

The US will then ensure “American, Western, and other companies have access to the Venezuelan market in a way that’s fair” before ensuring that the third step is “one of transition,” claimed Rubio.

Murphy said the proposal amounts to “stealing the Venezuelan oil at gunpoint for a period of time, undefined, as leverage to micromanage the country.”

“This is an insane plan,” he said after the briefing. “The scope and insanity of that plan is absolutely stunning.”

In a video he posted on social media, Murphy spoke directly to US voters about how Trump’s plan represents not only “corruption” that will benefit the president’s “energy industry and Wall Street friends” and a “failure to learn lessons” from the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also an abandonment of working families across the US.

“This is going to be a multi-billion-dollar effort which is going to take money—your money—but also enormous time,” said the senator. “Donald Trump, the White House, everybody there is going to be spending just as much time running Venezuela as they are running America. That’s terrible news for you, for the American taxpayer. Because there’s huge problems here at home. Healthcare premiums, prices going up, and now the United States government is going to be spending most of its time on many days running the country of Venezuela.”

At a press briefing, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt elaborated on Rubio’s comments, saying that the decisions of Venezuela’s interim authorities—including Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, who assumed power after President Nicolás Maduro was abducted by US forces last week—“are going to be dictated by the United States of America.” She added that it is premature to discuss elections in the country.

Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) told reporters after the House’s classified briefing that “there has to be a timeline for elections,” while Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.) said, “It’s like they’ll wave a magic wand and things will turn out the way they want.”

Numerous polls have shown that Trump’s escalation against Venezuela, which has also included dozens of boat bombings since September that have killed more than 100 people whom the White House claimed were trafficking drugs to the US, is broadly unpopular with Americans. Nearly two-thirds of respondents to a Quinnipiac University survey said last month that they opposed US military operations in Venezuela.

“Across America, people are just saying, what the hell is going on?” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said after the briefing. “We need answers as to how long this is going to last. We need answers to how many troops, how much money, are there guardrails, things we don’t do, and a number of things that we had talked about were very troubling.”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) was among the lawmakers who said the White House briefing made clear that Congress must hold public hearings on the Trump administration’s operations in Venezuela, adding that oil companies—who Trump openly said on Sunday were informed of the military strike and capture of Maduro before they happened—“seem to know more about Trump’s secret plan to ‘run’ Venezuela than the American people.”

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) added that the US is “four months into a sustained military operation” and has killed more than 200 so-called “enemies.”

“American troops have been injured,” he said. “We have the US forces arranged around Venezuela. Yet neither the House nor the Senate have been willing to hold a single public hearing.”

‘Execution Plain and Simple’: Community Fury in Minneapolis After Deadly Shooting by Federal Agent

Rep. Ilhan Omar demanded that ICE agents “stop terrorizing our communities.”

This a developing story… Please check back for possible updates… WARNING: This post includes graphic footage of the shooting which some people may find disturbing…

Residents of Minneapolis reacted with fury on Wednesday after a woman was shot and killed by a federal immigration agent.

Emily Heller, a Minneapolis resident who witnessed the shooting, told Minnesota Public Radio that she saw a federal agent confronting a woman who was sitting in her car and telling her to leave the area during an immigration enforcement operation in the neighborhood.

“She was trying to turn around, and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent was in front of her car, and he pulled out a gun and put it right in,” Heller told MPR. “And he reached across the hood of the car and shot her in the face like three, four times.”

The identity of the woman shot by the agent has not yet been released, but US Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) wrote in a social media post that the woman was a US citizen.

The senator also said that “ICE should leave now for everyone’s safety.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is also demanding that ICE leave the city, according to a post from the city’s official X account.

US Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) echoed Smith and Frey’s calls for ICE to get out of Minneapolis.

“ICE must stop terrorizing our communities and leave our city,” she wrote in a social media post.

Others condemned the shooting as a clear case of criminal excessive force that should be treated as murder.

“This is an execution plain and simple,” said journalist Krystal Ball in reaction to footage of the killing. “If your Trump love or immigrant hatred has you justifying murder, please seek help.”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz released a statement saying that his public safety team “is working to gather information on an ICE related shooting this morning,” while vowing to “share information as we learn more.”

“In the meantime, I ask folks to remain calm,” Walz added.

One witness, who was in the neighborhood to act as a legal observer, described horrifying scenes to local reporters:

The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, put out a statement acknowledging that an ICE officer had fatally shot the woman and accused her of engaging in “domestic terrorism.”

“ICE officers in Minneapolis were conducting targeted operations when rioters began blocking ICE officers and one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them—an act of domestic terrorism,” the agency claimed, without providing any evidence. “An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement, and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots.”

Video footage from scene as well as testimony from witnesses, however, betrayed the agency’s version of events. As one social media user said, posting the following video, “Does this look like what you’re claiming?”

A separate video from a different angle (Warning: graphic footage), also shows that the individual in the car was trying to turn the vehicle away from officers, not harm anyone:

Federal officials in the past have made statements about incidents involving protesters that have been flatly contradicted by officers’ own body camera footage.

In November, federal prosecutors dropped assault charges against Marimar Martinez, a woman who was shot multiple times by a US Border Patrol agent in Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood, weeks after her attorney claimed to have seen body camera footage that completely undercut officers’ claims.

‘Straight-Up Piracy and Extortion’: Trump Says He Will Control Money From Sale of Venezuelan Oil

US President Donald Trump declared that Venezuela will hand over up to 50 million barrels of oil—which could be sold for around $3 billion.

US President Donald Trump claimed late Tuesday that Venezuela’s interim leadership will turn over to the United States as many as 50 million barrels of sanctioned oil to be sold at market price, part of a broader, unlawful administration effort to seize the South American nation’s natural resources.

Trump, who authorized the illegal US bombing of Venezuela and abduction of its president this past weekend, said he would control the proceeds of the sale—which could amount to $3 billion.

“Just straight-up piracy and extortion from the US president,” journalist Mehdi Hasan wrote in response.

Consistent with his administration’s conduct since the weekend attack that killed at least 75 people in Venezuela, Trump provided few details on how his scheme would work or how it would comply with domestic and international law, both of which the president has repeatedly disregarded and treated with contempt.

It’s also not clear that Delcy Rodríguez, Venezuela’s acting president and an ally of Nicolás Maduro, has agreed to Trump’s plan, which he announced on social media as his administration worked to entice US oil giants to take part in its effort to exploit the South American nation’s vast reserves.

Ahead of the US attack on Venezuela, the Trump administration imposed a blockade on sanctioned oil tankers approaching or leaving Venezuela, pushing the country closer to economic collapse. The New York Times noted Tuesday that Trump’s decision to “begin targeting tankers carrying Venezuelan crude to Asian markets had paralyzed the state oil company’s exports.”

“To keep the wells pumping, the state oil company, known as PDVSA, had been redirecting crude oil into storage tanks and turning tankers idling in ports into floating storage facilities,” the Times reported. During Trump’s first White House term, he banned US companies from working with PDVSA.

Trump wrote in his social media post Tuesday that the tens of millions of barrels of oil “will be taken by storage ships, and brought directly to unloading docks in the United States.”

“I have asked Energy Secretary Chris Wright to execute this plan, immediately,” Trump wrote.

The Trump administration is also pushing Venezuela’s interim leadership to meet a series of US demands before it can pump more oil, ABC News reported late Tuesday. Trump has illegally threatened to launch another attack on Venezuela, and target more of its politicians, if the country’s leadership doesn’t follow his administration’s orders.

According to ABC, the Trump administration has instructed Venezuela to “kick out China, Russia, Iran, and Cuba and sever economic ties.”

“Second, Venezuela must agree to partner exclusively with the US on oil production and favor America when selling heavy crude oil,” ABC added, citing unnamed sources. “According to one person, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers in a private briefing on Monday that he believes the US can force Venezuela’s hand because its existing oil tankers are full. Rubio also told lawmakers that the US estimates that Caracas has only a couple of weeks before it will become financially insolvent without the sale of its oil reserves.”

THE United States is demanding that Venezuela cut all its economic ties with China, Russia, Iran and Cuba, according to a US news report.

This comes as President Donald Trump insists that the US is poised to sell up to 50 million barrels of Venezuelan oil.

ABC News reported on Tuesday that Washington had sent a demand to Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodriguez for her government to “kick out China, Russia, Iran, and Cuba and sever economic ties” with those nations.

The report also said the White House was demanding that Caracas agree to “exclusive co-operation with the US in the field of oil production.”

Mr Trump claimed that the US would assume interim governance of Venezuela and that Washington would secure compensation from Caracas for US companies affected by the previous nationalisation of the country’s oil industry.

The far-right president said on Tuesday that Venezuela would provide 30 million to 50 million barrels of oil to the US, claiming proceeds from the sale of this oil would be used “to benefit the people” of both countries.

Not all invasions are equal: the revolting hypocrisy surrounding Venezuela

OUTRAGE: Protesters hold signs calling for the release of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro outside Manhattan Federal Court before his arraignment in New York, on Monday January 5

When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Western outrage was absolute. Yet today, the tone is markedly more subdued regarding US aggression against Venezuela. The manner in which the media and politicians frame this invasion exposes a profound ideological double standard, writes MARC VANDEPITTE

… During the invasion of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky was immediately crowned the ultimate champion of democracy. Pre-war criticisms of his policies were airbrushed from the Western press as if they had never existed.

It became taboo to mention the banning of opposition parties or the relentless war in the Donbass, which claimed 14,000 lives between 2014 and 2022. The tragedy in Odessa, where some 40 trade unionists were burned alive, did not fit the heroic narrative and was subsequently filtered out of the coverage.

In Venezuela’s case, the opposite is happening. Media attention is focused almost exclusively on how “evil” Maduro supposedly is.

Every report on the US invasion is accompanied by a litany of his alleged failures. The narrative relies entirely on interpretations and exaggerations regarding the lack of democracy under his rule.

The White House attempts to justify the abduction by linking Maduro to drug cartels. However, this argument holds no water: the primary cocaine routes run through Colombia and Ecuador. Yet the media frequently “forgets“ to mention this, thereby legitimising military aggression in the eyes of the public.

Through this euphemistic framing and the constant demonisation of Maduro, a brutal military aggression is being de facto legitimised.

Following the double standards applied to Ukraine and Gaza, the West is losing its last shred of credibility with the global South. The “rules-based order” is being definitively unmasked as a selective instrument of power.

But there is more at stake. With this attack, Trump is testing the limits of his imperial ambitions. Because of Europe’s appallingly weak stance, Washington has received the signal that it can act with total impunity.
