Palestinian prisoner and political activist Lama Khater

Palestinian prisoner and political activist Lama Khater has described what she said were harsh conditions during her detention in Israeli custody, alleging systematic abuse inside interrogation centres and prisons.

According to a statement relayed by her lawyer following a recent visit, Khater said Palestinian female prisoners face ongoing violations, including beatings, humiliation, strip searches and solitary confinement.

Khater was arrested after Israeli forces raided her home in Hebron in the early hours of 23 March 2026. She was then transferred to the Al-Moskobiya interrogation centre in occupied Jerusalem.

She described Al-Moskobiya prison as “hell,” stating that guards subjected her to a full strip search upon arrival followed by a severe beating and violent physical assault.

Khater said she was later thrown into a dark and extremely cold cell, where she faced what she described as further punitive and degrading treatment. She alleged that guards forcibly removed her hijab, confiscated her prescription glasses, repeatedly insulted her and her family, and deliberately poured water on her mattress, worsening her suffering in the cold conditions.

Her testimony comes amid growing reports from Palestinian prisoners’ and human rights organisations regarding the conditions of female detainees in Israeli prisons. These reports allege the use of strict punitive measures and repeated violations, including solitary confinement, degrading searches, and deprivation of basic rights and healthcare.

Speaking after appeal court ruled ban lawful, Huda Ammori says fight will be won in the courts or ‘on the streets’

The co-founder of Palestine Action has said the battle to overturn the terrorism ban on the direct action group will be won – in the courts or “on the streets”.

On Monday, five court of appeal judges ruled that a ban on the organisation was lawful, reversing the high court’s February judgment, which they said had wrongly limited the home secretary’s discretion on national security.

Huda Ammori, who as a founder of Palestine Action – the first direct action protest group to be banned under the Terrorism Act – brought the legal challenge, said she was disappointed but remained confident of victory.

“I‘m certain that legally we are correct that this ban is disproportionate to free speech and the right to protest. I think that’s really clear,” she said. “We just need to get to the right court that’s going to recognise that and we’ll take it all the way up to the European court of human rights, if needs be.”

As an illustration of what she termed the politicisation of the case, Ammori highlighted the court of appeal judges’ assertion that “Palestine Action has little or nothing in common with the suffragettes”.

The suffragettes carried out a nationwide bombing campaign while Emily Davison, who is commemorated by two statues, attacked a clergyman with a horse whip after mistaking him for the then chancellor, David Lloyd George. Ammori said of the judges’ comparison: “It just is completely inaccurate and quite crazy that they even felt like they needed to make that comparison.”

Monday’s judgment was the second blow for Palestine Action after Friday’s sentencing of four activists involved in a 2024 raid on an Israeli manufacturer’s arms factory near Bristol.

Israeli Security Minister Ben-Gvir appoints relatives of slain Israelis as prison inspectors: Reports

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has decided to appoint relatives of slain Israelis as official prison inspectors in a move aimed at tightening detention conditions for Palestinian detainees, Israeli media reported Wednesday.

“The minister’s goal is to worsen the conditions of security prisoners,” people close to Ben-Gvir said, according to Israel’s Channel 12.

Israel uses the term “security prisoners” to refer to Palestinian detainees.

According to the broadcaster, Ben-Gvir decided to appoint the family members as official visitors and inspectors of Palestinian prisoners instead of qualified professionals.

“Minister Ben-Gvir reduced the number of inspectors to fewer than 20, and instead appointed bereaved families,” the channel said.

The inspectors are responsible for overseeing prisoners and monitoring their detention conditions and treatment inside Israeli prisons.

The move drew criticism in Israel, with political sources describing it as “a crazy decision that violates the law and will harm international relations,” Channel 12 reported.

“With all due respect to the bereaved families, ultimately they are not an official or professional body,” the channel quoted former senior officials in the Israel Prison Service as saying.

The former officials warned that the move could trigger international criticism and escalate tensions inside and outside prisons.

Since taking office in late 2022, Ben-Gvir has moved to tighten detention conditions for Palestinian prisoners, including through policies that rights groups describe as food deprivation and medical neglect.

The Israeli rights group Physicians for Human Rights-Israel said Tuesday that Palestinian prisoner Imad Sarhan faced medical neglect and was not examined for more than two and a half years before his death on Saturday at Gilboa Prison.

According to the group, Sarhan suffered from several health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.

Sarhan’s death raised the number of Palestinian prisoners who have died in Israeli prisons since Oct. 7, 2023, to 104, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

Around 9,500 Palestinian prisoners, including women and children, are being held in Israeli prisons and face starvation, torture and medical neglect that have led to the deaths of dozens of detainees, according to Palestinian and Israeli rights reports.

HRW: Israel escalating home demolitions, evictions in East Jerusalem

[Mamoun Wazwaz – Anadolu Agency]

Israeli authorities are accelerating home demolitions and forced evictions of Palestinian residents in the Silwan district of occupied East Jerusalem, Human Rights Watch said today. The organisation said the forcible deportation or transfer of the population of an occupied territory within or outside the territory, unless justified on a temporary basis for the protection of the population itself or imperative military reasons, is a violation of international humanitarian law and amounts to a war crime.

Silwan lies south of Jerusalem’s Old City. Among its 12 neighbourhoods, al-Bustan and Batn al-Hawa have for decades been the primary focus of eviction and demolition campaigns led by Israeli authorities and settler organisations such as Ateret Cohanim. These campaigns intensified under cover of the hostilities in Gaza and, this year, Iran.

Of the 587 Palestinians displaced by demolitions since October 2023, a quarter were displaced during Israel’s war with Iran in March-April 2026, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination and Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Over 2,000 people are at risk of forced displacement in Silwan, which, if not halted, will be one of the largest waves of expulsions in East Jerusalem since 1967, according to Ir Amim, an Israeli group that tracks government policies in Jerusalem.

“Israeli authorities are intensifying their longstanding illegal policy of emptying areas surrounding Jerusalem’s Old City of Palestinians and replacing them with Israeli settlers,” said Sarah Sanbar, acting Israel and Palestine researcher at Human Rights Watch. “Israeli efforts to change the demography of Jerusalem are war crimes, enabled by the impunity granted by Israel’s close allies.”

Under the Fourth Geneva Convention, forcible transfers of residents of Occupied Territory are prohibited. The only exception is temporary evacuation of an area if necessary for the security of the population or imperative military reasons.

In its 2024 advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the Court found Israeli policies and practices, including its forcible evictions and extensive house demolitions in East Jerusalem, contrary to the prohibition of forcible transfer of a protected population under Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention. The Court confirmed a transfer is “forcible” not only when it is achieved through physical force, but also when people have no choice but to leave. The ICJ further found that Israel’s practice of demolishing property for lack of a building permit amounts to prohibited discrimination. Under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, it is a war crime for an occupying power to deport or transfer all or part of the population within or outside the occupied territory.

Human Rights Watch has previously found that Israeli authorities intentionally caused the massive, deliberate, and long-term forced displacement and ethnic cleansing of Palestinian civilians in both Gaza and the West Bank, amounting to war crimes and crimes against humanity. In both cases, senior Israeli officials have declared their aim to expel and keep Palestinians out of parts of Gaza and the West Bank.

The continuing, accelerating violations against Palestinians in East Jerusalem is a direct consequence of Israel’s disregard for international law and impunity for ongoing violations, Human Rights Watch said. Other countries should impose targeted sanctions against individuals and organizations responsible, ensure accountability for war crimes, ban trade with settlements, and suspend preferential trade agreements with Israel.

Palestinian residents inspect damage at a mosque in the village of Jiljilya after Israeli settlers set fire to the building, damaging the women’s prayer section and writing Hebrew graffiti on its walls in Ramallah, West Bank, Palestine on June 17, 2026. [Issam Rimawi – Anadolu Agency]

Israeli occupiers on Wednesday set fire to parts of two mosques in the villages of Jiljilya and Mazra’a al-Nubani, north of the central occupied West Bank city of Ramallah, and sprayed Hebrew slogans on their walls, while Israeli forces demolished an inhabited Palestinian home east of Yatta, Anadolu Agency reports.

A group of occupiers stormed Jiljilya at dawn and set fire to the village mosque, burning the women’s prayer hall and damaging the mosque’s exterior walls, local sources told Anadolu Agency.

The village has recently witnessed an escalation in occupier attacks, the sources said.

Last month, occupiers attacked the village and stole a flock of sheep.

In a separate incident, occupiers attacked Mazra’a al-Nubani and set fire to a mosque there, causing material damage. They also sprayed Hebrew slogans on the walls of both mosques.

Later on Wednesday, Israeli forces demolished an inhabited Palestinian home east of Yatta in the southern occupied West Bank near a settlement road under construction.

Israeli forces, accompanied by heavy machinery, raided the Barouq area between Irfaiya and Ad-Deirat, east of Yatta and south of Hebron, local activist Osama Makhamra told Anadolu Agency.

Israeli bulldozers demolished an inhabited 180-square-meter home belonging to Palestinian resident Hamza Kamel al-Adra, he said.

Ahmed al-Adra, a resident of the area, told Anadolu Agency that the demolition was carried out on the grounds that the home had been built without a permit in an area classified as Area C under the Oslo II agreement signed between the Palestine Liberation Organization and Israel in 1995.

Under the agreement, the West Bank is divided into Areas A, B and C. Area A is under full Palestinian control.

Area B is under Palestinian civilian control and Israeli security control, while Area C is under full Israeli control and comprises about 60% of the West Bank.

Israeli authorities bar construction or land reclamation in Area C without permits, which Palestinians say are nearly impossible to obtain.

Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli forces raided the city of Qalqilya in the northern occupied West Bank, carrying out widespread home raids and arrests after sealing off one of the city’s neighborhoods amid heavy military reinforcements, local sources told Anadolu Agency.

During the raid, more than five Palestinians were detained, including a young man arrested after several roads in the city were closed, according to the sources.

On Tuesday evening, two Palestinians, including a journalist, were wounded by Israeli army fire during raids in the West Bank, while occupiers attacked two vehicles near the northern city of Salfit, local sources said.

Quds News Network correspondent Mutasem Saqf al-Hait was wounded while covering violent clashes that broke out between Palestinian youths and Israeli occupiers in the village of Deir Abu Mashal, the sources added.

In the town of Al-Mughayyir, east of Ramallah, a 15-year-old girl was wounded by a bullet in the shoulder during an Israeli army raid. She was taken to a hospital in Ramallah, where her condition was described as stable, medical sources told Anadolu Agency.

The occupied West Bank has witnessed escalating attacks by the Israeli army and occupiers against Palestinians and their property, including arson, land confiscation and restrictions preventing farmers from accessing their land, particularly in areas near settlements and outposts.

Since Oct. 8, 2023, the Israeli escalation in the West Bank has killed 1,169 Palestinians and injured 12,666 others, while around 23,000 have been arrested and 33,000 displaced, according to official Palestinian figures.
