    [Guardian] Exclusive: PM, who is facing pressure over whether to approve North Sea oil and gasfields, makes strongest comments yet on issue

    The UK must fully commit to reaching net zero by 2050, Andy Burnham has argued in his strongest comments yet on the issue, saying it is no longer possible for Britons to believe they are not already affected by a changing climate.

    Writing for the Guardian about new plans for a mass of community-led local green energy projects, the prime minister said the UK must “believe in itself”, and set out his determination to reach net zero targets, which have been rejected by the Conservatives and Reform UK.

    The tone marks a contrast to the summer, when Burnham faced criticism for a seemingly muted response to the heatwaves, droughts and wildfires that affected the UK, with his main initiative being a ban on portable barbecues.

    “I am determined that we meet the commitment on which Labour was elected and reach net zero by 2050,” Burnham said. “I want Britain to believe in itself again.”

    Saying he wanted to connect local communities to green power projects – to reach net zero targets and make energy more affordable – Burnham said: “I am acutely aware that our changing climate is a major concern for many Britons, not least because we have just emerged from our hottest summer on record.”

    Comment by dizzy: While this is very encouraging, it is unexpected and suggests a real change in direction. Burnham’s article seems far more restrained than the Guardian’s review leads us to believe, funding of £30m is nothing and it seems devolved rather than owned by his government. There’s a saying in UK and possibly elsewhere: The proof is in the pudding. It can be interpreted to mean wait and see what comes later.

    Rapturous applause followed the stirring words of Cuban trade union leader OSNAY MIGUEL COLINA at the TUC Congress today

    DELEGATES to the TUC Congress gave a standing ovation to Cuban trade union federation leader Osnay Miguel Colina today and demanded an end to US aggression against the island.

    Mr Miguel Colina told Congress the Cuban people would never surrender to US bullying.

    “And resistance does not mean simply enduring. We will work, create, develop alternatives,” he said.

    The Cuban trade unionist detailed the horrific impact of the US blockade, which has intensified this year with a siege cutting off all oil supplies, leading to blackouts, disrupting transport and shuttering many workplaces.

    But he also described Cuba’s response, including an accelerated push to install solar power capacity to make up for the loss of oil. “They cannot blockade the sun,” he said, to deafening applause.

    Congress overwhelmingly backed a Prison Officers’ Association motion demanding the TUC push the government to oppose the extraterritorial application of US sanctions on Cuba in this country, deliver humanitarian assistance to Cuba and for affiliated unions to support the Cuba Solidarity Campaign.

    Moving, Phil Hannant of the POA said the US was waging “economic warfare to make everyday life unbearable, to create hunger, desperation and suffering in the hope that this will produce political change.”

    UNION leader Jo Grady said today she “doesn’t need macho men to defend” her as TUC Congress heard that wealth and windfall taxes “won’t touch the sides” of Labour’s £102 billion annual defence spending plans.

    Delegates in Brighton backed the University and College Union’s motion which warned that massively increased military spending will weaken national security by leaving less available for public services.

    The motion called on the TUC to raise awareness of “the right to conscientious objection and opposition to compulsory military service.”

    Artists’ Union England, rail union RMT and the National Education Union (NEU) spoke in favour while Unite, GMB, Prospect and Community opposed, urging unions not to “pit worker against worker.”

    Community delegate and former Royal Marine Andrew Gutteridge said: “We want our world to be more peaceful … we instead are living in a world where strong men want to dominate others, and while those men exist it will be our armed forces who defend us.”

    Ms Grady replied: “The weapons that are made are used to rain hell on earth in Palestine now.

    “I was 17 when we saw the Iraq war … I don’t need macho men defending me — most of the young men I was friends with enlisted in the army and came back traumatised and wounded and have never been the same: for every story you can tell there’s a different story of trauma and misery.”

    WORKERS PARTY deputy leader Chris Williamson quit the party in protest at George Galloway’s decision to contest the Holborn and St Pancras by-election.

    Mr Williamson, a former Labour MP, has come out in support of Green Party leader Zack Polanski, the main left challenger to Labour in the constituency.

    “I have a huge amount of respect for George Galloway, but I believe we should get behind Zack Polanski on this occasion,” he wrote on social media.

    “My firm view is that the left must collaborate to defeat the Labour Party, Reform UK, Conservatives and Lib Dems because these parties are all in the pocket of the neoliberal Zionist war machine.

    “Zack is best placed to do that in this by-election.”

    Mr Williamson’s defection is a blow to the Workers Party, since he was the most prominent politician in its ranks other than Mr Galloway himself.

    ANDY BURNHAM’S government remains complicit in genocide, unions said as TUC passed an historic vote to back the Palestinian-led BDS campaign against Israel today.

    Ministers announced new restrictions on trade and weapons exports with illegal settlers in Palestine earlier this month.

    Campaigners hailed delegates in Brighton for voting to support the “Palestinian-led boycott, divest and sanctions (BDS) movement” and call on the government to impose “wide-ranging sanctions on Israel until it complies with international law.”

    Moving the motion, Artists Union England’s Zita Holbourne said that the government’s recent acceptance of a 2024 International Court of Justice ruling urging Israel not to commit genocide in Gaza “is not enough.”

    “Palestinian society, including unions, have reiterated the call for the international community to implement BDS against ongoing crimes of genocide, apartheid and occupation,” she said.

    The motion also called on ministers to “commit to freedom of speech and end attempts to censor artists and art organisations expressing solidarity with Palestine” after it emerged on Tuesday that rapper Macklemore was removed from an Ed Sheeran concert for backing the war-torn territory.

    Seconding, Unison delegate Margaret McKee said that unions will continue to call on Labour to fully suspend arms trade with Israel and the Britain-Israel trade partnership agreement until “human rights and international law are respected.”

    “If the government doesn’t do this, you are still being complicit in the genocide of the Palestinian people,” she said.
