  • Greens announce new membership record on first day of Labour Party conference

    The Green Party of England and Wales has announced it has surged past 80,000 members on the first day of the Labour Party conference – a record high for the party. The announcement was made by Green Party Leader, Zack Polanski, speaking at a campaign event in North London.

    The new membership record marks a near 20% increase in membership since Polanski was elected leader less than a month ago.  Green Party leader Zack Polanski said

    “This is a huge milestone for the Green Party of England and Wales. The tired, old two-party system is over.  More and more people are looking to a politics rooted in tackling the climate crisis and inequality. The Green Party is the party that wants to bring water into public hands, wants to lower bills, and wants to protect our National Health Service.  Our party conference is just a week away. Our membership growth is a fantastic foundation from which to deepen our roots in local communities and build a bolder politics.  This is just the beginning, and we have no time to waste.” 

    Zack Polanski said before the Labour Party conference opening, “When I said we intend to replace Labour, I meant it.  As another Labour conference comes round, it’s another emergency government reset.  It just confirms what we already know: Labour has failed. By his own standards, Starmer has broken the promises he was elected on, ditched the principles he claimed to stand for, and his government has made inequality worse, ignored the climate crisis and contributed to arming a genocidal Israeli government. And for all the talk, this conference isn’t a vision for the future. It’s a desperate attempt to rewrite the past.” 
     
    “People are crying out for bold leadership, not cautious tinkering.  This will probably be Starmer’s last conference.  Labour’s future candidates aren’t offering any of the solutions we need.  The Green Party is offering these solutions. A wealth tax on the super-rich, investment in public services and action to protect our climate. We are ready to turn this country around by offering a bold, positive alternative to a crumbling Labour government.”

    Responding to Keir Starmer’s speech at the Global Progress Action Summit in London, which argued Britain has been ‘squeamish’ about illegal immigration, Green Party Leader, Zack Polanski said, 

    “Keir Starmer today said this country has been too ‘squeamish’ about talking about immigration. Let’s call that for what it is: bullshit. The truth is, politicians have talked about little else for decades and almost always in the most toxic, dehumanising way possible. These comments are lapped up and regurgitated on a near-daily basis as talking points without any real balance.

    That phrase “stop the boats” is all we hear. Well, today I am saying “stop the bullshit”. 

    It’s time to be honest. It’s what we deserve. Immigration is not the crisis. The NHS is not crumbling because of tiny numbers of desperate people clinging on to small boats. The crisis is a political class too cowardly to tackle the actual huge issues of poverty, housing, and low pay. Too eager to distract us by pointing the finger at people who come here to contribute to our communities and our economy.”

  • Gatwick given green light for £2.2bn second runway plan

    Heidi Alexander approves expansion to allow 100,000 more flights a year

    Gatwick airport’s £2.2bn second runway plan has been given the go-ahead by the transport secretary, Heidi Alexander.

    With the privately financed project, the West Sussex hub is aiming to increase its capacity by 100,000 flights a year.

    Gatwick will move its emergency runway 12 metres north, enabling it to be used for departures of narrow-bodied planes such as Airbus A320s and Boeing 737s.

    The new runway is expected to add 14,000 jobs and as much as £1bn in extra economic activity.

    Alexander backed the scheme as a “no-brainer” for economic growth, a government source said on Sunday, suggesting flights could take off from the new full runway by 2029.

    Environmentalist have slammed the government’s decision to approve a second Gatwick runway.

    Green party leader Zack Polanski has said:

    “Signing off on a second runway at Gatwick is a disaster. It ignores basic climate science and risks undermining efforts to tackle the climate crisis. Labour keeps wheeling out the same nonsense about growth, but at what cost? What this really means is more pollution, more noise for local communities, and no real economic benefit.

    Expanding Gatwick is a tired, 20th-century answer to a 21st-century crisis. Labour’s obsession with ‘growth at all costs’ is driving us deeper into a climate breakdown and social inequality crisis.”

    Rosie Downes, head of campaigns at Friends of the Earth, argues that the economic case for the expansion is ‘massively overstated’:

    “With emissions from aviation rising as climate extremes increasingly batter the planet with more intense floods, droughts and wildfires, it’s a struggle to see how the government can conclude expansion at Gatwick is a wise move.

    “The Secretary of State says a second runway is a “no-brainer” for the economy, but the economic case for airport expansion is massively overstated. Any growth in air passengers leaving the country is likely to mean more UK tourists using their spending power overseas than anything we might gain from visitors.

    Almost 1,400 people sign up in 24 hours to increase party membership by 10% since Zack Polanski’s leadership win this month

    The Green party’s membership has jumped by more than 1,000 people in a day after a public split between Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana cast doubt on the viability of the pair’s new leftwing party.

    Almost 1,400 people signed up to the Greens in the 24 hours since the bitter disagreement emerged, in which Corbyn and his allies referred Sultana to the information watchdog after claims that she started collecting membership subscriptions without authority.

    The leap has helped push the Greens in England and Wales above 75,000 members, a more than 10% increase on the number of members when Zack Polanski won the contest to be their leader at the start of the month, the party said.

    After his victory Polanski expressed willingness to potentially cooperate with the party being set up by Corbyn, the former Labour leader, and Sultana, who was elected as a Labour MP but now sits as an independent.

    However, the Green leader has said it is impossible to know if and how that might happen given the lack of any party structure or policies. He added that the Greens already offer a political home for left-leaning voters disillusioned with Labour.

  • UK Green Parties demand BBC withdraw from Eurovision coverage if Israeli state broadcaster participates

    The Green Parties across the UK, the Scottish Greens, the Green Party of Northern Ireland, the Green Party of England and Wales, and the Welsh Green Party have today issued a rare joint call on the BBC to withdraw from the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest coverage if Israel’s state broadcaster is permitted to participate.

    In a letter to BBC Director-General Tim Davie, the four Green Parties warn that Israel’s assault on Gaza since October 2023 has left more than 64,000 Palestinians dead, over 160,000 injured, and entire neighbourhoods reduced to rubble. UN officials have repeatedly said Israel’s actions bear the hallmarks of genocide. British Green Parties have repeatedly called on the British state to act in line with the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.  

    The leaders also highlighted Gaza as the deadliest conflict for journalists ever recorded, with more reporters killed there in the last two years than worldwide in the three years before combined.

    Zack Polanski, Leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, said:

    “Eurovision is supposed to stand for peace, shared humanity and a lot of fun. Those values cannot coexist with complicity in genocide. By standing alongside Israel’s state broadcaster, the BBC would not just be ignoring the mass killing of civilians, it would also be turning its back on journalists being silenced and murdered for telling the truth. That is indefensible.” 

    Broadcasters across Europe are already taking action. Ireland’s RTÉ and Slovenia’s RTVSLO have pledged to withdraw if Israel participates, while Spain’s Culture Minister has raised the same, and Iceland is consulting the public. The BBC cannot stay neutral in genocide.” 

    Ross Greer, Co-Leader of the Scottish Greens, said:

    “We’ve been here before. In the fight against apartheid South Africa, cultural boycotts were vital in telling oppressive regimes they would not be normalised. The same principle applies today. Israel must not be allowed to use Eurovision as a platform to launder its reputation while committing atrocities.” 

    Malachai O’Hara, Leader of the Green Party of Northern Ireland, said:

    “This is a moment for moral clarity. Either the BBC stands on the side of peace, justice and international law – or it lends legitimacy to a state committing mass human rights abuses. The choice could not be starker.” 

    Anthony Slaughter, Leader of the Welsh Green Party added:

    “The UK cannot look away while children starve, while families are bombed from their homes, while an entire people are brutalised. The BBC has a responsibility to act, and the time to act is now.” 

    The joint letter concludes: 

    “The Eurovision Song Contest is supposed to celebrate peace, unity, and shared humanity. Those values cannot coexist whilst arming a genocide. We therefore call on the BBC, in the strongest possible terms, to withdraw from the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest if Israel’s state broadcaster is permitted to participate. In the face of genocide, we urge you to act.”
