The classic 17th-century buccaneer was not a simple pirate; he was a hybrid figure who operated in the grey area between state-sanctioned privateering and outright piracy. He used his connections with powerful governments to secure a “Letter of Marque” that legitimised his plunder, all the while lining his pockets. This government-issued license authorised privateers to attack and capture vessels of a rival nation, distinguishing legal privateering from piracy.  Financial incentives also meant that privateers kept a large portion of the seized goods as compensation for their efforts, with portions going to the government that issued the commission. This form of state-sanctioned warfare, which blurred the lines between privateering and piracy was abolished internationally in 1856. And now it is back, dressed in a corporate suit and incarnated by Jared Kushner et al.

Just as the ancient buccaneer hid behind the flag of a nation to plunder, so Kushner and his ilk hide behind the flags of diplomacy and “economic development” to do the same. In recent years, Kushner, the deal-maker son-in-law of the American president, has made an entrance into the world of diplomacy and neo-colonial administration by actively meddling in Palestine and Middle Eastern politics.

As his father-in-law’s chief advisor, Kushner oversaw Trump’s ludicrously monikered “Deal of the Century,” announced in January 2020 and then followed by the so-called “Abraham Accords” in September 2020, which bypassed the central issues of the Palestinian-Israeli ‘conflict’. In an early interview during Trump’s first administration, Kushner explained his qualifications in this area: he had been “studying [the Middle East] now for three years:  I’ve read 25 books on it, I’ve spoken to every leader in the region, I’ve spoken to everyone who’s been involved in this.” In an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal (14 March, 2021) Kushner characterised the Arab-Israeli ‘conflict’ as a “real-estate dispute”. The limitations of his understanding of the roots of the conflict are clearly discernible here, including in the claim that “Arab leaders refused to accept the creation of the state of Israel and spent 70 years vilifying it and using it to divert attention from domestic shortcomings.”

READ: Washington and Tel Aviv deny Saudi report claiming Kushner met Abu Shabab

With no experience and a pronounced lack of grounding in the region’s historical and political complexities, Kushner owes his position entirely to nepotism, which has given him a diplomatic cover to attain “deal making” under the guise of diplomacy and peace, thus converting political access and diplomatic power into billions of dollars in Saudi-UAE-and Qatar-based branches of Sovereign Funds Affinity Partners, his private equity firm. Blatant 21stcentury buccaneering in all its glory.

Fast forward to August 2025 and POTUS indicated that he had to bring in his son-in-law because no one can match his intelligence. Kushner’s “second coming” only became public knowledge when he (along with Tony Blair and others) attended an August White House meeting to plan for post-war governance and “redevelopment” of Gaza, when the president announced: “I put Jared on it because he’s a very smart person and he knows the region, knows the people, knows a lot of the players.” In a New York Times interview, repeating his previously held views that he was “not quite interested in history,” and making it clear he saw himself and Witkoff, the Middle East envoys as “deal guys,” veterans of the New York real-estate scene who understood what made people tick. Kushner announced: “A lot of people who do this are history professors, because they have a lot of experience, or diplomats. It’s just different being deal guys – just a different sport.”  His only real knowledge comes from his father, Charles Kushner, who has decades-old close family ties with Netanyahu and has been a major donor to Right-wing pro-Israeli causes; a relationship so close that Netanyahu has stayed in the Kushner family home in New Jersey, according to the New York Times. One official commented that Kushner and Witkoff “stood shoulder to shoulder with Israel 100%”. Total and complete partiality. No questions asked.

Indeed, Kushner’s major imprint on Middle East policy since Trump’s second administration is his signature proposal that Gaza be “redeveloped” as a vast and “valuable waterfront” property, an idea that he first voiced at a Harvard event in 2024, in which he promoted “cleaning it up” and the forcible eviction of Palestinians.

Enormous conflict of interest and open corruption charges notwithstanding – and still with no formal role in the White House  Kushner took centre stage in getting the Gaza deal, which could bring him a huge bounty to “redevelop” Gaza. And lest Palestinians and other international observers declare anything other than undying gratitude to this hero of our times for his sacrifices in the cause of world peace, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt informed us earlier (in October) that “Jared is donating his energy and his time to our government, to the president of the United States, to secure world peace, and that is a very noble thing.”

READ: Middle East on the brink as Gaza and Lebanon ceasefires face collapse

And now to the final scene in the act.  In a ceremony announcing the inauguration of the new civil-military cooperation centre in Kiryat Gat, Kushner, standing at the command centre said he was looking forward to a “new Gaza, to give Palestinians living in Gaza a place to go, a place to get jobs, a place to live”.  This elicited a fierce response from Joshua Liefer, the leading Haaretz writer, on 23 October 2025, in which he excoriated failed “occupation management”, the chimera of “economic peace”, and the patronising assumption that Palestinians can be “bought off” with these scraps. All of this, previously said and indeed reiterated on multiple occasions, will however presumably entirely bypass Kushner.

Kushner’s soulless public persona, a masterpiece of strangely immobile features, presents a smooth deadpan surface to the world, giving little hint of emotion. This eerie wax-work quality of otherworldly detachment is profoundly disquieting, suggesting not inner peace but a deep disconnect and the ability to discuss the fate of millions with the same detached focus as if reviewing a real estate portfolio.

In this new world, the language of “peace” and “ceasefire” is becoming ever more Orwellian, a “ceasefire” in which on one night alone in October more than 100 starved Palestinians – children, women and the elderly – were bombed and murdered in their tents, with hundreds more injured.  A “peace” with a new “Yellow line” reminiscent of Oslo-style administrative divisions of areas A, B, and C, and a West-Bankification of Gaza or, more bluntly stated, bantustans. This will bring more than half the territory of the Gaza strip under full Israeli control, raising serious concerns that this new policy could become a permanent partition of the devasted enclave, with Israel remaining the occupying force, promising more violence, carnage, death and destruction and the absence of any measure of genuine self-determination for Palestinians.

The age of buccaneering is well and truly back, led by Jared Kushner and his international allies, including Tony Blair, Ron Dermer, Steve Witkoff et al. Their land and resource grabbing is not a secret – they speak of it openly.  In the lexicon of the deal guy, peace is just another word for a very profitable acquisition. Plunder is now policy.

Dozens of athletes have called on the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to suspend Israel for its human rights violations against Palestinians, Anadolu reports.

In a letter to UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin on Tuesday, the Athletes for Peace, which represents over 70 sports figures, supported calls for the organization to sever ties with the Israel Football Association.

The letter penned by the Game Over Israel organization is supported by Athletes 4 Peace, The Gaza Tribunal, and The Hind Rajab Foundation.

“No shared venue, stage, or arena in international civil society should welcome a regime that commits genocide, apartheid, and other crimes against humanity,” the letter said.

The call was supported by prominent athletes, including French World Cup champion Paul Pogba, Dutch forward Anwar El Ghazi, Moroccan player Hakim Ziyech, and Spanish winger Adama Traore.

“Israel’s continued impunity for such crimes will only be ended by the weight of collective conscientious action, including measures to block their entry to sporting or cultural events and activities,” the letter added.

The letter addressed Ceferin directly, referencing his own words that “football belongs to everyone,” and warned that allowing people who harm their own and others’ humanity into the sport risks depriving football of its core values.

The petition is part of an ongoing campaign to have UEFA ban Israel from participating in tournaments over attacks in Gaza.

The Israeli army has killed more than 69,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured over 170,000 others, and left the Gaza Strip uninhabitable since October 2023, according to the Health Ministry.

Europe’s Palestine solidarity movement strengthens call to boycott Israeli pharmaceutical company Teva

Pressure is mounting on local governments and public pharmacies to replace Teva products with alternatives not complicit in Israel’s occupation and genocide.

Israeli pharmaceutical giant Teva is facing mounting pressure from Palestine solidarity groups across Europe. One of Israel’s largest drugs manufacturers and a major global producer of generic medicines, Teva has actively supported the genocide in the Gaza Strip since October 2023 and contributed to the erosion of Palestinian healthcare long before that, Giorgia Gusciglio, Europe Coordinator for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Campaigns at the Palestinian BDS National Committee, told People’s Health Dispatch.

Last year, as Gaza’s health services and workers faced near-total annihilation from Israeli attacks, Teva reported over USD 16.5 billion in revenue. Part of that revenue comes from the Palestinian market, where the company profits from the double standards imposed by the apartheid regime.

In contrast to Palestinian pharmaceutical producers, who face severe restrictions, prolonged import procedures, and arbitrary “dual-use” designations for essential components, Teva is free to market its products in the occupied territories, many times without adapting packaging or documentation. According to sources collected by BDS Italy, the company even sells medicines in boxes and with instruction leaflets not translated into Arabic.

The exploitation of pharmaceutical needs in occupied territories is not unique to Teva or the time since 2023. The 2012 report “Captive economy: The pharmaceutical industry and the Israeli occupation” concluded that “all Israeli pharmaceutical companies sell their products on the Palestinian market and profit from it, without paying any price for the occupation and its damage.”

A matter of Palestine solidarity and access to medicines

Beyond usurping the Palestinian market, Teva also holds an important share of Europe’s pharmaceutical landscape: not only through its large generics portfolio, but also through proprietary products for multiple sclerosis and cancer. The contradiction between Teva’s stated “commitment toward better health” and its well-documented complicity in war crimes has driven the growth of groups mobilizing to boycott and expose the company. As Gusciglio explains, these initiatives vary by country: in Ireland they have a strong trade union dimension, while in Belgium and Italy, they are primarily led by BDS chapters and activist networks. But the local campaigns still share the same goal – securing justice for Palestine.

A key moment in achieving that goal is reaching out to patients and medics. Throughout the genocide, BDS Italy has been working closely with the local collective Health Workers for Gaza (Sanitari per Gaza), achieving major milestones. According to activists who spoke with People’s Health Dispatch, one of their first actions under the Teva boycott campaign was to distribute leaflets in front of pharmacies to raise awareness among patients and pharmacists about the company’s role in the genocide. “All activists took responsibility for visiting a pharmacy, arranging meetings with the chemist, and trying to raise awareness about boycotting Teva products,” the activists explained. The same approach was extended to general practitioners and, by now, the understanding of Teva’s complicity has grown significantly among health professionals and patients alike, BDS Italy members said.

The campaign then moved to engage professional associations and pressure local governments to suspend purchases of Teva products in public pharmacies. Over recent months, several municipalities have responded, issuing guidance for pharmacies under their jurisdiction to seek alternatives. “Teva sells mostly generics, but there are also some drugs that it developed itself and are therefore not replaceable,” BDS Italy activists note. “It’s important to emphasize that we call for suspending purchases except in the case of medicines that are essential or cannot be substituted.”

The fact that some Teva products are not replaceable is often used as a misleading argument against the boycott. In reality, it points to systemic problems in the global pharmaceutical and patent system more than it identifies a concrete issue within the BDS call. One example of this is Copaxone, Teva’s multiple sclerosis treatment. Even Israel’s trusted ally, the European Union, called out the company’s attempts to shield itself from competition by artificially extending the drug’s patent protection. Through such actions, BDS Italy pointed out, Teva has likely inflated public health expenditures for multiple sclerosis drugs, with Copaxone alone costing about €500 million a year in 2022. Efforts to mobilize for alternatives to Teva’s products therefore represent a possible meeting point between Palestine solidarity and public pharma initiatives, opening the door to more just and accessible health systems.

Italian municipalities adopt guidance to replace Teva

“The first local administration to issue a recommendation to move away from Teva products was Sesto Fiorentino, near Florence,” BDS Italy activists noted. “They were soon attacked by the media, accused of antisemitism and mismanaging public funds. Some claimed that Teva drugs are cheaper, and that discouraging their purchase would raise costs for patients and the health system.”

Despite such attacks, an increasing number of municipalities have since joined the boycott call, including in Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Marche, and Trentino-Alto Adige. While many have urged public pharmacies to look for substitutes for Teva products, others have opted for different approaches.

In Rovereto, after a successful grassroots campaign, the local government asked pharmacies to display infographics informing customers that they have the right to choose safe, effective alternatives to Teva products.

While more municipalities in Italy are discussing similar moves, the global BDS campaign and the European Legal Support Center (ELSC) are considering support for municipalities wishing to introduce ethical public procurement in line with EU legislation as well as human rights standards. Meanwhile, campaigners in Europe are keeping up the pressure, turning to, among other things, Teva’s presence in hospital pharmacies and its attempts to whitewash its image through initiatives like the Humanizing Health Awards. Activists are also continuing their partnerships with health workers’ collectives, such as the Health Workers for Gaza fasting action held in Italy earlier this year, while expanding international networks.

Their campaigns might already be showing signs of success. While the company proudly reported its 2024 revenue, it was more restrained about the fact that it had also recorded net losses amounting to 1.4 billion dollars in the first nine months of the year alone. As BDS Italy noted, “Israel’s genocidal assault since October 2023 and its various consequences could be considered potential factors influencing these results.”

Palestinians fear war could resume at any moment as Israeli forces hit tent in Khan Younis

Palestinians fear the war could resume at any moment after an Israeli strike hit a tent sheltering a displaced man in Bani Suheila, east of Khan Younis, Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary reports from Gaza.

Residents told Al Jazeera that the area targeted was outside the so-called “yellow line” — the boundary demarcating territory under Israeli control.

Local health officials said the victim’s body was taken to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. Witnesses said he had not been living within the restricted zone and questioned why Israeli forces would have hit his tent.

Since the start of the ceasefire, at least 241 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, according to local authorities. Israel has claimed those killed were attempting to cross the yellow line — an explanation Palestinians on the ground reject.

Such violations have heightened fears that the fragile truce could break down at any moment. Drones remain constantly overhead, and the sounds of explosions echo as Israeli forces continue to demolish areas beyond the yellow line.

The ongoing destruction and military activity, residents say, have left Gaza’s population bracing for the fighting to resume at any time.

8 Palestinians injured by illegal Israeli settlers in occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem

Eight Palestinians were injured in the illegal Israeli settlers’ assaults in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem on Sunday, according to local sources, Anadolu reports.

Illegal Israeli settlers attacked the Al-Arara Bedouin community north of occupied East Jerusalem with stones and sticks, leaving seven Palestinians with varying degrees of injuries, according to the Bedouin rights group Al-Baidar.

The settlers burned the container houses and caused material losses to the residents.

The organization warned that “the continuation of these violations poses a direct threat to the stability of the people and their presence on their lands and paves the way for forced displacement.”

In the Umm al-Khair village of southern Hebron, southern West Bank, another group of settlers attacked Palestinians in the morning while they were working on their lands, local sources told Anadolu.

A young Palestinian was transferred to a hospital for medical attention after getting injured on his face and head.

Israeli attacks have escalated across the occupied West Bank since October 2023, killing more than 1,069 Palestinians and injuring 10,300 others, Palestinian figures showed.

According to the official Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission, Israeli forces and illegal settlers carried out 766 attacks against Palestinians, their homes, property, and sources of livelihood across the West Bank in October alone.

In a landmark opinion last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
