The US administration has dispatched Witkoff, Kushner, and Vance to Israel to salvage the shaky ceasefire deal.

US President Donald Trump confirmed to reporters on Sunday, October 19, that the US-brokered Gaza ceasefire deal, which he announced on Wednesday, October 8, is still in place.

Trump’s confirmation came after Israel launched a renewed aggression on the besieged Gaza Strip during the past several days with a series of airstrikes and shooting attacks, which left dozens of Palestinians killed.

Israel claimed that its warplanes waged the deadly airstrikes in retaliation of an alleged shooting attack by Hamas fighters against two personnel of the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF), leaving them dead. Aid entry into the starved enclave was halted as a response to the purported shooting attack as well.

“We want to make sure that it’s going to be very peaceful with Hamas. As you know, they’ve been quite rambunctious. They’ve been doing some shooting, and we think maybe the leadership isn’t involved in that, that it’s some rebels within, but anyway it’s going to be handled properly. It’s going to be handled toughly, but properly,” Trump told reporters.

When he was asked: “Is the ceasefire still in place?” The US President replied: “Yes.”

Israel has committed scores of violations since the ceasefire started

Although the ceasefire deal went into effect on Friday, October 10, Israel has committed scores of violations, killing at least 100 Palestinians and wounding 230 others, according to Gaza’s Government Media Office.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip reported that after the renewed Israeli aggression, the death toll in the war-torn strip has risen to 68,216 fatalities since October 7, 2023.

Trump sends Witkoff, Kushner, Vance to Israel to bolster the fragile ceasefire deal

In an effort to salvage the fragile ceasefire deal, the US administration dispatched its “Middle East” envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to Israel on Monday, October 20, to meet Israeli officials, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and two IOF major generals.

Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance is set to arrive in Israel on Tuesday, October 21, to join the discussions on the deal.

Israeli media outlets reported that Witkoff and Kushner warned Netanyahu against taking any action that may jeopardize the first phase of the deal.

“Do not act in a way that would endanger the ceasefire. We want to do everything to reach the second phase,” the two US envoys were cited saying while addressing Netanyahu. “Self-defense is acceptable, risking the ceasefire is not,” they insisted.

Maintaining the first phase of the ceasefire deal was not the only topic to be discussed during the meetings. The “entire mechanism for dismantling and demilitarizing postwar Gaza”, and “all the preparations necessary to carry out the second phase of the agreement” were also on the table.

The UN warned on Wednesday that humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip is being hindered by closed border crossings by Israel, even as families move to areas that have become accessible since an Oct. 10 ceasefire, Anadolu reports.

Citing the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), UN spokesperson Farhan Haq reported at a news conference that “since the ceasefire took effect more than 10 days ago, the UN and its partners have made progress in scaling up response efforts in Gaza, especially in central and southern areas of the Strip.”

“The continued closure of the Zikim and Erez crossings, which provide direct access to the north, make it extremely challenging for humanitarians to reach people there with vital support at the scale needed,” he said.

Since the ceasefire, more than 425,000 movements have been reported from southern to northern parts of the Strip, Haq said, with displaced people sheltering in sites such as Jabaliya and two schools in Beit Lahiya, which had previously been unreachable due to Israeli military operations.

On aid delivery, Haq said out of 10 UN-coordinated humanitarian missions inside Gaza on Monday, six were facilitated, including “the collection of water tanks, hygiene kits and fuel from the crossings into Gaza.”

“Today, we managed to collect several tankers of fuel and hundreds of pallets of baby diapers,” he added.

UN-coordinated trucks carrying almost 1,500 metric tons of aid were collected from the Karem Abu Salem and Kissufim crossings on Monday, nearly three-quarters of which was food, he said.

“Other supplies included shelter materials, animal feed, health supplies and water, sanitation and hygiene items,” Haq said.

Stressing the importance of opening the Rafah crossing, Haq warned that “the real test is whether this ceasefire lasts longer than the previous one.”

On the occupied West Bank, Haq welcomed a recent US senators’ letter to President Donald Trump urging a firmer stance against Israeli annexation and said: “Of course, we’re in favor of all steps that discourage the changes to the status quo of the West Bank.”

Arab states condemn Israeli bills for West Bank annexation as ‘flagrant violation of international law’

Arab countries decried the Israeli Knesset’s preliminary passage of two bills on Wednesday to annex the occupied West Bank and the Ma’ale Adumim settlement bloc in East Jerusalem as a “flagrant violation of international law,” Anadolu reports.

The Knesset approved the two bills in a preliminary reading on Wednesday. Both drafts still must pass three additional readings to become law.

In a statement, Jordanian Foreign Ministry spokesman Fouad al-Majali called the move “a flagrant violation of international law and a blow to the two-state solution, as well as to the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination and to establish their independent, sovereign state on the June 4, 1967 lines, with occupied Jerusalem as its capital.”

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry denounced the Israeli bills as “a blatant assault on the historical rights of the Palestinian people and a clear violation of international law and UN resolutions.”

The Saudi Foreign Ministry expressed the kingdom’s “complete rejection of all settlement and expansionist violations carried out by the Israeli occupation authorities.” It reiterated support for the Palestinian people’s “inalienable and historical right to establish an independent state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital in accordance with relevant international legitimacy resolutions.”

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry likewise strongly rejected the Israeli bills, emphasizing that the occupied territories in Gaza and the West Bank, including Jerusalem, “form a single geographic unit, over which Israel has no sovereignty.”

“Sovereignty belongs exclusively to the Palestinian people and their leadership, represented by the Palestine Liberation Organization, based on the natural, historical, and legal rights of the Palestinian people in their homeland, Palestine, and its close connection to international law, human rights, and United Nations resolutions,” it said in a statement.

The Palestinian group Hamas also rejected the Israeli bills, calling Israel’s efforts to annex the occupied West Bank “null and void.”

“The occupation’s frantic attempts to annex the West Bank are illegal and invalid. They do not change the fact that the West Bank is Palestinian land under history, international law, and the 2024 advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice,” it said in a statement.

The Knesset vote came despite opposition from US President Donald Trump, who said last month that he would not allow Israel to annex the West Bank. It also came as US Vice President JD Vance is currently visiting Israel.

Annexing the West Bank would effectively end the possibility of implementing a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as outlined in UN resolutions.

Israeli attacks have escalated across the West Bank since October 2023, killing more than 1,056 Palestinians, injuring 10,300, and detaining over 20,000 others, according to Palestinian figures.

In a landmark opinion last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Hundreds of Jewish public figures worldwide have appealed to the UN and global leaders to impose sanctions on Israel for “unconscionable” acts in the Gaza Strip that amount to genocide, The Guardian reported Wednesday, Anadolu reports.

An open letter signed by more than 450 individuals, including former Israeli officials, writers and award-winning artists, demands accountability for Israel’s actions in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

“We have not forgotten that so many of the laws, charters, and conventions established to safeguard and protect all human life were created in response to the Holocaust,” it said. “Those safeguards have been relentlessly violated by Israel.”

Among the signatories are former Israeli Knesset speaker Avraham Burg, peace negotiator Daniel Levy, authors Michael Rosen and Naomi Klein, filmmaker Jonathan Glazer and actors Wallace Shawn and Ilana Glazer.

The appeal urged governments to respect rulings of international courts, stop the transfer of arms, enforce targeted sanctions and ensure humanitarian access to Gaza. It denounces “false claims of antisemitism against those advocating for peace and justice.”

“We bow our heads in immeasurable sorrow as the evidence accumulates that Israel’s actions will be judged to have met the legal definition of genocide,” said the letter.

The Guardian noted that recent polls show growing concern among US Jews, with 61% saying Israel has committed war crimes and 39% believing it is committing genocide.

“Our solidarity with Palestinians is not a betrayal of Judaism, then, but a fulfillment of it,” the letter added.

Since October 2023, the Israeli war in Gaza has killed more than 68,200 people and injured over 170,300, according to the Palestine Health Ministry.

The Israeli Knesset (parliament) passed a bill in its preliminary reading on Wednesday to annex the occupied West Bank, Anadolu reports.

A Knesset statement said the bill was approved in a preliminary reading “to apply the sovereignty of the State of Israel to the territories of Judea and Samaria (West Bank).”

The statement said 25 lawmakers supported the bill, introduced by Avi Maoz, leader of the far-right Noam Party, while 24 opposed it. The Knesset has 120 members in total.

The bill still must pass three additional readings to become law. It will now go to the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee for further deliberations.

The daily Yedioth Ahronoth also reported that another bill to annex the Ma’ale Adumim settlement bloc in the occupied West Bank also passed its preliminary reading in the Knesset’s plenary session with 32 votes in favor and nine against. The bill was introduced by Avigdor Lieberman, head of the Yisrael Beiteinu Party.

The vote came despite opposition from US President Donald Trump, who said last month that he would not allow Israel to annex the West Bank. It also came as US Vice President JD Vance is currently visiting Israel.
