Left and civil society groups demand India end its complicity in Israel’s genocide

Left parties will observe a day of solidarity with Palestine on August 3 to pressure the Indian government to stop sending weapons to Israel and to end the genocide

Five left parties in India issued a joint call, asking the Indian government to stop supplying weapons to Israel, and demanding immediate comprehensive international sanctions over its continued violations of international law and the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. Similar calls were made by civil society groups as well.  

The parties include the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), Forward Bloc, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, issued a joint call for a nationwide protest mobilization on August 3, in solidarity with the Palestinian people. 

Apart from calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and creation of a Palestinian state on pre-1967 borders, the left parties demanded Israel be declared an apartheid state, and denounced Israel’s continued defiance of UN resolutions, existing international laws and the rulings of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).  

“In the light of brazen violations of UN resolutions, the ICJ rulings against the genocide by Israel in Gaza and the escalation of such genocide against the people of Palestine,” the left parties call upon “Indian people to express their solidarity with the Palestinian people and against the genocide and atrocities being carried out by Israel backed by the United State of America” the text of the joint call reads.  

The left parties also demanded that the government of India “cancel all export licenses and permissions to various Indian companies for the supply of military arms and ammunition to Israel, and halt all arms imports from Israel” and “end all forms of complicity with Israel’s illegal military occupation and genocide [which is] based on the principles of colonial apartheid.”

Speaking in a press conference organized by civil society groups on Thursday in New Delhi, Brinda Karat, a CPI (M) polit bureau member said that, “our deep and abiding solidarity for Palestinian freedom requires us to hold our own government accountable for actions which help the perpetrators of the continuing barbaric horrors against the children, the people of Palestine.”

Speaking in the press conference, economist and right to food activist Jean Dreze accused the Indian government of complicity in genocide and starvation of Palestinians, by refusing to stop cooperation with the Zionist state and by refusing to press Israel to stop its war in Gaza.

Almost 40,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 90,000 injured so far in the Israeli genocide on Gazam which began on October 7 of last year.   

Stop aiding Israeli genocide in Gaza!

Several prominent figures, including former judges of the Supreme Court of India, scholars and activists wrote a joint letter to India’s defense minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday, asking the country to immediately halt all supplies of weapons to Israel, claiming it violates India’s obligations to international laws and its own constitutional provisions.  

Quoting media reports about Spain not allowing the docking of at least two ships allegedly carrying military equipment from India to Israel in recent months, as well as labels of “made in India” found on some of the missiles dropped by Israel in Gaza, the civil society members claimed in a press conference on Thursday that the Narendra Modi-led government of India has forgotten its own commitments to the Genocide Convention and other international laws, and even failed to implement its historical positions on the Palestinian issue. 

The joint letter to India’s defense minister provides evidence of how at least three Indian companies are manufacturing missile parts and Hermes drones, which are used by Israel to launch attacks inside civilian areas in Gaza. 

“Any supply of military material to Israel would amount to a violation of India’s obligations under international humanitarian law and the mandate of Article 21 read with Article 51 (c) of the Indian constitution. We urge you, therefore, to cancel the concerned export licenses and halt the granting of any new licenses to companies supplying military equipment to Israel,” the joint letter reads.   

India’s billions of dollars of arms trade with Israel contradicts its own stated positions of “peaceful resolution in Palestine” and its voting patterns on successive UN resolutions most of which support an immediate ceasefire and the creation of a Palestinian state on the occupied territories, various speakers said in the press conference on Thursday. 

Speakers, including Karat, demanded that the Indian government should stop trying to be a beneficiary of the Israeli occupation and stop indulging in opportunistic practices, such as sending its workforce to replace Palestinians in Israel.  

Last year, the Indian government agreed to send workers to replace thousands of Palestinians whose work permits were canceled by Israel after the beginning of the war on October 7.

Siddharth Varadarajan, editor of the Wire, said that India’s policy on supporting Israel during the war goes against the Modi government’s stated position of preserving Indian interests, as Israeli acts such as the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Iran earlier this week could result in the eruption of regional warm which can force around 5 million Indians working in the Gulf countries to return home.

Lawyer Prashant Bhusan, and prominent writer Arundhati Roy, also underlined that any clandestine deal between India and Israel violates India’s democratic principles and its historic commitments to anti-colonial struggles around the world.

Netanyahu receives standing ovation in US Congress while anti-genocide protesters brutalized at Capitol gates

A wanted war criminal addressing US Congress proved to be a pitched battle between the state and tens of thousands of anti-genocide protesters

Tens of thousands of people demonstrated in Washington, DC yesterday in opposition to Benjamin Netanyahu’s joint address to Congress. While war criminal Netanyahu received a standing ovation from both chambers of Congress and both major establishment parties, thousands took to the streets directly outside the US Capitol building to register their disgust with the US’s support for and complicity in the genocide of 186,000 Palestinians.

Police forces launched pepper spray at demonstrators and made several arrests, but demonstrators, who came as individuals or part of organizations of the working class such as student groups, labor unions, and tenant organizations, overcame intense police repression in order to assert their right to protest. In doing so, these protesters registered the mass discontent among the people of the United States regarding the US’s bankrolling of Israeli genocide. Recently polling has shown that as many as 61% of people in the US are against sending aid to Israel. Among people under 30, that number jumps to 77%.

The state made drastic preparations to protect Netanyahu’s speech to Congress from demonstrations. Over 200 New York Police Department officers were deployed ahead of protests. The layers of barricades and protections around the Capitol building far exceeded those on January 6, 2021 when far-right demonstrators were able to go as far as scaling the building and entering the offices of the highest-ranking politicians. “Look around the area, there are snow plows, police barricades, eight-foot high fencing,” said Brian Becker, Executive Director of the ANSWER Coalition, one of the key organizers of the demonstration, during the rally preceding the march through Washington. “This US Capitol, which says to itself, we are the people’s house, it should be renamed, it should be called Fort Netanyahu.”

Following the rally of tens of thousands which convened in front of the Capitol, demonstrators prepared to march. Shortly after the march began, protesters were blocked by a line of police officers from multiple agencies, including DC police, Capitol police, and NYPD. After it became clear that the police intended to stop the march in its tracks, Becker addressed the crowd from the frontline, “The police have decided to block the people of the United States from exercising their constitutional right to go to the point of the protest. We say no. We have the right to go on Constitution Avenue, there’s no rule against it. The permit is called the First Amendment of the Constitution.”

With that, the crowd decided to press forward, after which, police deployed pepper spray liberally amongst the crowd, injuring several protesters. 

“This proves to us that our police forces are training with the IDF, they’re learning tactics from the IDF,” Ibtihal Malley, an organizer with the Palestinian Youth Movement, told Peoples Dispatch directly after police pepper sprayed the crowd. “They are afraid of the people, and they’re afraid of the mass movement for Palestine, so they resort to violence to brutalize our people, just as they brutalize us in Gaza.”

“We are here in DC marching with tens of thousands of people that are asserting their right to march and to protest, and we were blockaded by tens of police,” said Lameess M., also a lead organizer in the Palestinian Youth Movement, in an interview with Peoples Dispatch following police repression. “[Police are] here to protect a war criminal and use our tax dollars to protect that war criminal, while pepper spraying the people that they claim to represent.”

The incident of state repression only made the crowd more defiant. The march quickly diverted to another street, where they continued to evade police lines for several blocks throughout Washington, DC, before rallying once again in front of Union Station. Inspired demonstrators took it upon themselves to take down three massive US flags in front of the station, replacing them with Palestinian flags, and burning the US flags along with a puppet effigy of Netanyahu. 

This expression of popular anger at genocide has been seized upon by mainstream media as well as the highest-ranking politicians in the country to denounce the protests. Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party favorite for the 2024 presidential elections, released a statement making no mention of the reason that tens of thousands had gathered in Washington, DC to protest the celebration of a war criminal. Instead, she condemned “the burning of the American flag.” 

“That flag is a symbol of our highest ideals as a nation and represents the promise of America. It should never be desecrated in that way,” Harris stated. “I condemn any individuals associating with the brutal terrorist organization Hamas, which has vowed to annihilate the State of Israel and kill Jews. Pro-Hamas graffiti and rhetoric is abhorrent and we must not tolerate it in our nation.”

The ANSWER Coalition released a statement following the demonstrations. “To try and misdirect people’s attention, some parts of the corporate media and the White House itself are now trying to minimize the significance of these actions,” the anti-war organization stated. “They are attempting to demonize the protests, and focus on one individual sign or some individual’s burning of the American flag. This is designed to distract the public from the actual police violence yesterday, and the true mass violence that has claimed over 40,000 Palestinian lives and millions more in U.S.-led wars across the world. But the rising of the Palestinian flag on multiple flagpoles in front of Union Station and in the shadow of the US Capitol grounds is a clear indication that the tide has turned. Public opinion has been transformed so dramatically that no attempt at deflection can turn it back.”

Organizations of the working class denounce genocide

Despite heavy repression, organizations of the working class used the platform of the demonstration to denounce the US’s unconditional support for Israel. The day before the demonstration, seven major unions, representing almost half of all unionized workers in the United States, penned an open letter calling for an end to all US military aid to Israel and a ceasefire in Gaza. Leaders from some of these major unions addressed demonstrators in front of the Capitol. 

These leaders include Mark Dimondstein, President of the American Postal Workers Union. “In the spirit of working class solidarity and justice, the American Postal Workers Union… stands with humanity and the suffering people, workers and unions in Gaza, in calling for a long overdue ceasefire and massive humanitarian aid to the 2.3 million people of Gaza,” he addressed the rallying crowd. “While they are displaced, homeless, bombed, killed, injured, diseased, and starving behind the war crimes of the Netanyahu-Israeli government, fully backed by US military aid.”

Dimondstein’s denunciation of US government policy is not only reflective of his personal opinion, but that of the workers the APWU represents. “Just last week in our convention we voted,” calling on the US government to halt military aid to the US government, “and to stop using our tax dollars for more war,” he said.

“It’s a labor issue. We believe in social justice, we believe in international solidarity,” Dimondstein told Peoples Dispatch in an interview. “Workers pay taxes, and the last thing our taxes should be used for is to kill, maim, and starve innocent men, women, and children of another country.”

“The workers are deeply affected in Palestine and the unions are deeply affected in Palestine,” he continued. “And it’s also a working class issue because there’s real danger of a wider war. And who has to fight, kill, and be killed in these unjust wars if it’s not the working class?”

“US taxpayers are basically funding a genocide,” said Arrion Brown, the director of the Support Services Division within the APWU, in an interview with Peoples Dispatch. Brown has been a postal worker for 24 years. “Those same tax dollars would do so much better in the US, helping actual working people.”

“Working people hold the power of the country, of the world. So it’s important for working class people to express our thoughts, to let the powers that be, the establishment know that they’re not going in the direction we want. Ultimately, we are the political power, we are the working power, and we are the power of the world.”

Brandon Mancilla, a leader in the international board of the United Auto Workers, also addressed the crowd on behalf of the over 400,000 workers of diverse sectors represented by the UAW. In his speech, Mancilla credited rank and file workers with pushing the leadership to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, a step the union took back in December. “Autoworkers in Dearborn, Michigan, have been personally affected by this issue, and have demanded that their union and their government stop funding a genocide. Because academic workers all across the country in countless campuses in almost every state of this country have been protesting for their literal right of free speech, to call on their universities to divest and be held accountable,” he mentioned. The UAW notably represents not only auto workers but a large portion of organized academic workers across the country. Following the brutal crackdown against the Gaza solidarity encampment at the University of California – Los Angeles (UCLA), UAW Local 4811, which represents academic workers within the University of California system, went on strike for the right to protest for Palestine, representing the first strike in US history in relation to the Palestine solidarity movement.

For Mancilla, the letter that seven unions signed onto on July 23 represents an “escalation.” 

“A ceasefire has not been realized, it has not been actualized, and in order to actually make that happen, not only do we have to keep negotiations going, and agree to the framework, we have to also materially intervene, which means ending arms shipments to Israel,” Mancilla told Peoples Dispatch.

Unions were not the only organizations of the working class out in full force that day—Peoples Dispatch also spoke to tenants organized with CAAAV (Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence), an organization that united Asian-American communities in New York City against gentrification, among other issues. Bingjie, a young member of CAAAV from the NYC neighborhood of Chinatown, told Peoples Dispatch that it’s unjust that tax dollars are being used to fund genocide “when tenants don’t even have enough in New York.” 

“The fight for Palestine is not just a fight for Palestine itself, but for liberation for the whole entire world,” she said.

How mainstream media ignores UK military support for Israel

Bullish coverage

Of course, straight after 7/10, mainstream journalists were quick to promote the deployment of planes and personnel to support “our ally” in the region. 

While the Sun splashed photos of British jets and frigates heading to the eastern Mediterranean with the headline “United We Stand”, the BBC basically reproduced a Ministry of Defence press release in its story, “UK to deploy Royal Navy ships to Middle East to ‘bolster security’.”

On 2 December, the Ministry of Defence released a short statement on UK military activity in the region, ostensibly to secure the release of (only) Israeli hostages. 

The BBC, along with other news outlets, immediately ran a story repeating the MoD’s words verbatim (with a sprinkling of additional text from the Pentagon) as if these were to be innocent “surveillance flights” despite the fact that over 15,000 Palestinians had already been killed in brutal air strikes since 7/10.

This was followed by a flurry of highly bullish coverage of two further military interventions directly related to bolstering UK support for Israel – evidence of the “extensive defence and security cooperation” between the two countries that was embedded in the ‘Roadmap’ agreement signed in 2023 (and ignored by the media).

Censorship by omission

This lack of interest in the British government’s military links to Israel shouldn’t suggest, however, that there is nothing to investigate.

Indeed, Declassified UK has published multiple stories on the more opaque actions of the UK government that have been largely ignored by mainstream news including the deployment of a British spy team in Israel since 7/10, the dozens of flights by UK military aircraft to Israel in this period, the surveillance activities in support of Israel and the training of Israeli military personnel in the UK. Almost none of these have been followed up in broadcast bulletins and articles.

There is one area, however, in which the media do appear to have engaged with this topic: British arms sales to Israel that, according to the Campaign against Arms Trade, amount to £576 million since 2008. 

That there were 2,648 stories mentioning “arms sales to Israel” and “UK” between 7 October and 19 June 2024 might suggest this is a major area of concern for journalists.

Not so fast. 85% of all stories appeared after 1 April when three UK citizens were among seven aid workers killed when Israeli jets attacked the food convoy they were managing. 

For the 177 days between 7/10 and 1 April, the media (with the exception of the Scottish National, Guardian and BBC Parliament) showed little inclination to open up discussion on the issue. 

Despite serious concerns that, through its exports of weapons to the Israeli military, the UK is complicit in ongoing war crimes, major news outlets only started to show an interest in the topic once British people, not Palestinians, were the story.

Israeli Assurances on US Weapons and International Law Called ‘Sick Joke’

“We know Israel won’t comply so long as there are no consequences,” said one advocacy group. “The U.S. must cut off weapons now!”

In news that one policy expert said could have been ripped from the satirical newspaper The Onion, Israeli officials gave a written assurance to the Biden administration on Friday that it would use U.S. weapons in accordance with international law.

The assurance comes more than five months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, in which the country’s U.S.-backed military has killed at least 31,490 Palestinians, including more than 12,300 children, while claiming to be targeting Hamas members.

Assal Rad, research director at the National Iranian American Council, noted that Israel has also killed at least 95 journalists in Gaza, attacked healthcare facilities, and starved civilians by blocking humanitarian aid deliveries while explicitly calling on the Israel Defense Forces to commit genocidal acts.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant signed the letter to the Biden administration weeks after the White House released a national security memorandum (NSM-20) saying Secretary of State Antony Blinken must “obtain credible and reliable written assurances” from any country receiving U.S. weapons, stating that the country “will use any such defense articles in accordance with international humanitarian law.”

In December, an Amnesty International investigation found that U.S.-made munitions had been used by the IDF in two illegal airstrikes on residential buildings, which killed more than 43 people, including 19 children.

NSM-20 also says a country receiving U.S. arms must “facilitate and not arbitrarily deny, restrict, or otherwise impede, directly or indirectly, the transport or delivery of United States humanitarian assistance and United States government-supported international efforts to provide humanitarian assistance.”

“This is nonsense,” Rohan Talbot, director of advocacy and campaigns for Medical Aid for Palestinians, said of Gallant’s letter on Friday.

While relentlessly assaulting civilian targets in Gaza, Israel has allowed only a fraction of the humanitarian aid that’s needed into the enclave. In recent weeks, the IDF has killed an estimated 400 Palestinians who were trying to access aid, according to officials in Gaza.

According to Axios, which first reported on Israel’s communication, Blinken has until March 25 to certify that Gallant’s assurances are credible.

Gallant is among the top Israeli officials who have used genocidal rhetoric regarding Palestinians since the country began its bombardment in retaliation for the October 7 Hamas-led attack on southern Israel. He said publicly in October that the IDF was fighting “human animals” in Gaza—home to about 2.3 million people, nearly half of whom are children.

The letter from the defense minister amounted to “a sick joke,” said author and political analyst Josh Ruebner.

“Israel’s assurances to President Joe Biden that it won’t use U.S. weapons to violate international law and won’t block U.S. aid from reaching starving Palestinians are clear and blatant lies,” said the Institute for Middle East Understanding. “We know Israel won’t comply so long as there are no consequences. The U.S. must cut off weapons now!”

Majority of Americans Want Halt of US Weapons Bound for Israel: Poll

“Everyone knows that the U.S. could end this today if we wanted to,” said one analyst.

A new poll released Tuesday revealed that a majority of Americans want to the U.S. government to stop supplying the Israeli military with weaponry to carry out its brutal assault on Gaza that has killed over 30,000 Palestinians, most of them civilian men, women, and children.

As organizers called on Democratic voters in at least seven states to vote “uncommitted” on their Super Tuesday primary ballots on Tuesday to help push the Biden administration to demand a permanent cease-fire in Gaza, the YouGov poll provided another measure of Americans’ growing outrage over their government’s material and political support for the “genocidal” campaign by Israel’s far-right government.

Commissioned by the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR), the poll of 1,000 U.S. adults asked respondents whether they agreed with the statement: “The U.S. should stop weapons shipments to Israel until Israel discontinues its attacks on the people of Gaza.”

Fifty-two percent of people said they agreed with the statement, while just 27% said they disagreed.

CEPR co-director Mark Weisbrot noted that while the call for a cease-fire “can mean different things to different people… the support for halting weapons shipments is specific and unambiguous.”

Less than two weeks after scientists projected that at least 6,500 people would likely die in Gaza in the coming months even in the case of an immediate, permanent cease-fire, Weisbrot said many Americans may have “already moved past” the idea that a cease-fire is sufficient.

“Support for stopping U.S. weapons shipments to Israel has gained traction in recent days,” noted CEPR, “as the Gaza death toll has surpassed 30,000 people, about two-thirds of them women and children.”

Since the Biden administration’s approval of weapons shipments to Israel since October, Israel has decimated civilian infrastructure across Gaza while also blocking nearly all humanitarian aid, leaving the entire population facing “crisis-level hunger” that is approaching famine in some areas.

“We have the power to stop this. Everyone knows that the U.S. could end this today if we wanted to,” said Weisbrot, posting a video of European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell calling on U.S. President Joe Biden and other Western leaders to “provide less arms” to Israel, considering Biden’s stated belief that too many civilians are being killed.

Tuesday’s poll revealed that ending weapons shipments for Israel is popular across the political spectrum.

Sixty-two percent of people who voted for Biden in 2020 agreed that the U.S. should end shipments, while only 14% disagreed.

CEPR pointed out that “Among those who did not vote in the 2020 presidential elections—a key group containing voters that both Democrats and Republicans would like to turn out this year—fully 60% agreed that the U.S. should block weapons shipments.”

The latter result is one “that the Biden campaign should be worried about,” said Weisbrot. “These are the voters Biden needs to turn out to expand his base.”

People who voted for former Republican President Donald Trump in 2020 were the only group in which a majority opposed halting weapons shipments, with 55% saying the shipments should continue. Thirty percent said they should stop.
