On Palestinian Children’s Day, the reality for children in Gaza reflects a profound humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands growing up without parents amid ongoing war and devastation.
Recent data indicates that the number of orphans in the Gaza Strip has reached approximately 64,616 children, most of whom have lost one or both parents during the latest Israeli aggression. The figure underscores the scale of the social catastrophe affecting an entire generation and is expected to rise as the consequences of the war continue to unfold.
Before the war, the number of orphans in Gaza did not exceed 22,000, highlighting the unprecedented increase in a short period.
Amid ongoing destruction, children in Gaza face a daily reality marked by loss, displacement, and deprivation. In shelters and displacement camps, many are seen waiting in aid lines or sitting silently among the ruins of their homes, having lost the families that once provided stability and protection.
The crisis extends beyond immediate humanitarian needs, posing a long-term societal challenge that requires not only relief efforts but also sustained support to rebuild lives and communities.
For many children in Gaza, orphanhood is not only the loss of a parent, but also the loss of security, stability, and a sense of normal childhood, with lasting psychological and social consequences.

The agency demanded that all parties protect civilians and reiterated the secretary-general’s call “to end the fighting and engage in diplomatic negotiations.”
Since the United States and Israel launched an unprovoked war on Iran at the end of February, more than 1,100 youth have been killed or injured in related violence across the Middle East, the United Nations Children’s Fund said Wednesday, calling for a swift diplomatic resolution.
“The situation is becoming catastrophic for millions of children across the region,” UNICEF said in a statement, noting that at least 200 children are reportedly dead in Iran, 91 in Lebanon, four in Israel, and one in Kuwait. “These numbers will likely climb as the violence intensifies and spreads.”
Most of the kids killed in Iran died in what mounting evidence suggests was a US attack on the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school in Minab on February 28. That attack killed an estimated 175 people, mostly students ages 7-12, part of an overall death toll that the Iranian government has said exceeds 1,300.
Responding to the school bombing, Gordon Brown, a former UK prime minister who’s now the UN special envoy for global education, argued in a Guardian opinion piece Thursday that “the world will now need stronger mechanisms to ensure accountability,” such as a body complementing the International Criminal Court but specifically for children, “focusing its attention on the bombing of schools, abductions of pupils, and militias that enslave boys and girls.”
With the widening conflict in the Middle East, UNICEF noted Wednesday, “widespread disruption to education has left millions of children out of school across the region, while hundreds of thousands of children have been displaced by unrelenting bombardment.”
In Lebanon, where Israeli attacks are allegedly targeting the Lebanese political and paramilitary group Hezbollah despite a November 2024 ceasefire deal, nearly 800,000 people, including around 200,000 children, have been forced from their homes, according to Mercy Corps. The Lebanese government has said at least 570 people have been killed and 1,444 injured.
“Civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and water and sanitation systems—upon which children depend to survive—have been attacked, damaged, or destroyed by parties to the conflict,” UNICEF said. “Nothing justifies the killing and maiming of children, or the destruction and disruption of essential services that children depend on.”
“Grave violations against children in armed conflict can constitute violations of international law, including international humanitarian law, and international human rights law,” the UN agency continued.
Across Iran, several United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage sites have also been damaged by the US-Israeli war, which experts worldwide argue violates both the US Constitution and UN Charter.

The UN Security Council, which is currently led by President Donald Trump’s administration, on Wednesday adopted a resolution condemning Iran’s retaliatory attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan—nations that host US military bases—without even mentioning the US-Israeli bombing campaign.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres last Friday demanded a return to negotiations. Trump, who abandoned a previous Iranian nuclear deal during his first term, ditched recent talks with Iran in favor of bombing the country with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—who has used war on Iran to again close crossings into the Gaza Strip, or as critics have put it, reinstate a “starvation policy” in the Palestinian territory devastated by Israel’s 29-month genocidal assault.
In addition to reiterating “the secretary-general’s call on parties to the conflict to end the fighting and engage in diplomatic negotiations,” UNICEF on Wednesday urged everyone involved “to take all necessary precautions in the choice of means and methods of warfare to minimize harm to civilians, including by avoiding the use of explosive weapons that disproportionally affect children.”
“The region’s children—all 200 million of them—are counting on the world to act quickly,” the agency concluded.
A Wednesday letter signed by every member of the US Senate Democratic Caucus but Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.)—who previously helpedRepublicans block a war powers resolution intended to halt Trump’s assault on Iran—called for a probe of the Minab school attack and sounded the alarm about Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s rhetoric that “only serves to endanger civilians.”
Specifically, Hegseth has said that the US assault on Iran, which they’re calling Operation Epic Fury, would have “no stupid rules of engagement,” and there will be “death and destruction from the sky all day long.”

“Students can’t learn, and educators can’t teach, when there are armed, masked federal agents stationed within view of classroom windows, sometimes for days on end,” said the Education Minnesota president.
Just days after an educational leader in Minnesota said that “our families feel hunted” because of President Donald Trump’s “Operation Metro Surge,” two school districts and a teachers union on Wednesday sued to block immigration agents from targeting people in and around public schools.
“For decades, administrations of both parties recognized that schools are different—places where children learn, where families gather, and where fear has no place,” noted June Hoidal of Zimmerman Reed LLP, one of the firms behind the new lawsuit filed in the District of Minnesota.
However, shortly after Trump returned to office last year, his Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revoked the rule barring agents from arresting undocumented immigrants in or around “sensitive” locations like schools, places of worship, and hospitals, as part of his pursuit of mass deportations.
“When enforcement moves into school zones, the harm isn’t theoretical,” Hoidal stressed. “Attendance drops, instruction stops, and school communities lose the stability public education depends on. Districts across the country are watching how courts draw the line around spaces dedicated to children.”
Over the past year, members of DHS and its agencies—including Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)—have flooded various communities, including in Minnesota. The districts in this case serve students in Fridley, a suburb of the Twin Cities, and Duluth, about 150 miles northeast of Minneapolis and Saint Paul.
“The removal of long-standing protections around schools has had immediate and real consequences for our learning community,” said John Magas, superintendent of Duluth Public Schools. “We’ve seen increased anxiety among students, disruptions to attendance, and families questioning whether school remains a safe and predictable place for their children. Schools function best when families trust that education can happen without fear, and that stability has been undermined.”
His counterpart in Fridley, Brenda Lewis, similarly said that “as superintendent, my responsibility is the safety, dignity, and education of every child entrusted to our schools. When immigration enforcement activity occurs near schools, it undermines trust and creates fear that directly interferes with students’ ability to learn and feel safe. Schools depend on stability, and that stability has been disrupted.”
As Common Dreamsreported earlier this week, Lewis has recently spoken at a press conference and to media outlets about the flood of federal agents—and it’s come at a cost. The superintendent said she was tailed by agents multiple times while driving to and from the district office, and three of the six school board members have spotted ICE vehicles outside of their homes.
“It is my responsibility to ensure that our students and staff and families are safe, and if that means [agents are] going to target me instead of them, then that’s what we need to do, and then they can leave our families alone,” Lewis said. “But at the end of the day, are they trying to intimidate me to stop? Yes. Will I stop? No.”
In addition to the two districts, Education Minnesota, a labor union of more than 84,000 state educators, is part of the suit against DHS, CBP, ICE, and agency leaders. The group’s president, Monica Byron, declared that “students can’t learn, and educators can’t teach, when there are armed, masked federal agents stationed within view of classroom windows, sometimes for days on end.”
“ICE and Border Patrol need to stay away from our schools so students can go there safely each day to learn without fear,” she continued, “and so that our members can focus on teaching instead of constantly reacting to the shocking and unconstitutional actions of federal agents.”
Last February, a federal judge in Maryland blocked the Trump administration from conducting immigration enforcement actions at Baptist, Quaker, and Sikh places of worship that sued over the repeal of protections for sensitive locations. The new suit asks the court to throw out the 2025 policy and restore protections to all such places.
The legal group Democracy Forward is involved in both cases and several others challenging Trump policies. The organization’s president and CEO, Skye Perryman, said Wednesday that “the trauma being inflicted on children in America by this president is horrific and must end. The Trump-Vance administration’s decision to abandon long-standing protections for schools has injected fear into classrooms, driven families into hiding, and thrown entire school communities into chaos.”
“This is unlawful, reckless, and legally and morally indefensible,” Perryman added. “We are in court because children should never have to look over their shoulders at school or worry that their loved ones could be taken away at the schoolhouse gate, and because the government cannot undermine decades of settled policy without regard for students, educators, or the law.”

The suit was filed as Tom Homan, Trump’s “border czar” and one of the named defendants, announced that 700 immigration agents are departing from Minnesota, which will leave around 2,000 there. The move comes amid incredible pressure on the administration to end Operation Metro Surge. Protests in the state, and in solidarity around the country, have ramped up since agents fatally shot legal observers Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.
The deadly operation in Minnesota has also impacted federal spending decisions in Congress. On Tuesday, lawmakers passed and Trump signed a bill to end a short-term government shutdown, but the measure funds DHS for less than two weeks. However, even if future funding for the department isn’t resolved in that time, ICE can continue its operations thanks to an extra $75 billion for the agency that Republicans put in last year’s budget package.

More than 12,000 Palestinian children are living in a state of “forced displacement” in the West Bank as a result of Israel’s ongoing military operation in the north of the occupied territory, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) said Sunday, Anadolu reports.
Since Jan. 21, 2025, the Israeli army has been carrying out a military campaign in the northern West Bank, which began in the Jenin refugee camp and later expanded to the Nur Shams and Tulkarem camps.
Israeli forces have imposed a siege on the three camps, accompanied by widespread destruction of infrastructure, homes and shops, leading to the displacement of around 50,000 Palestinians, according to official figures.
“More than 12,000 children remain forcibly displaced in the occupied West Bank,” the UNRWA said in a statement on the US social media company X.
In response to the operation, UNRWA said it “launched an emergency education program for displaced children in February 2025.”
The refugee agency said it has provided education “through temporary learning spaces, online teaching, the distribution of self-learning materials, and psycho-social support” for affected students.
UNRWA noted that 48,000 children attend its schools across the occupied West Bank.
Israeli forces and illegal settlers have killed at least 1,105 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, injured nearly 11,000, and detained around 21,000 since October 2023, according to Palestinian figures.
In a landmark opinion last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

More than one million children in Gaza are still in urgent need of food and clean water, while 650,000 remain out of school despite the ongoing ceasefire, UNICEF spokesperson Tess Ingram said on Sunday.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Ingram said that while the ceasefire agreement has stopped the daily bombardments that were killing children, “it is not enough on its own to end hunger or guarantee families access to safe drinking water.”
She warned that thousands of children in Gaza continue to go to bed hungry each night, as infrastructure critical to water, sanitation, and healthcare remains in ruins. “Families in Gaza continue to struggle daily to survive,” she said, adding that damage to essential facilities has made access to basic services “extremely difficult.”
The ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, brokered by US President Donald Trump, went into effect on 10th October. However, Israeli forces have been accused of multiple violations since then, resulting in additional Palestinian casualties and continued restrictions on humanitarian aid entering the enclave.
