     Sinister: Zia Yusuf

REFORM’S pledge to crack down on employers for hiring people without legal residence in Britain is a bid to get back on the front foot.

The scandal over Nigel Farage’s wealthy sponsors refuses to go away, and together with a fresh face at Number 10 has cost Reform its top spot in opinion polls.

Plan A, to reassert his greater popularity with the public than the mainstream parties via a staged showdown in Clacton, has gone badly wrong. Since nobody at Westminster would play ball he can triumph only over various unknowns and joke candidates, which will prove nothing.

So Zia Yusuf has been deployed to announce Plan B. It too is meant to showcase Reform’s anti-Establishment credentials. Prison sentences for corporate bosses who hire illegal labour. Crippling fines, up to 10 per cent of global turnover.

This is a sinister policy. But it isn’t stupid. The impunity of a boss class who routinely break the law is a source of genuine resentment.

It is why contracts-for-cronies and Covid lockdown breaches by the Boris Johnson gang brought down that premiership.

It is one reason the conduct of privatised water companies is so explosive.

Excrement-strewn beaches, unsafe drinking water and the discharge of huge volumes of raw sewage into rivers are outrageous enough as it is — but the knowledge that the CEOs in charge receive salaries in the millions, that the flow of dividends to shareholders is as constant as that of filth into our waterways, is incendiary.

Reform hopes to tap into hostility to corporate fat cats. It pretends to champion working-class Brits: “Corporate CEOs have been making a fortune by hiring illegal workers and undermining British youngsters. Reform will jail them and stop illegal working for good — we will stand up for British workers.”

It will not, of course. Reform would repeal the Employment Rights Act, stripping millions of rights to sick and holiday pay. Farage says the minimum wage should be cut for young workers.

Nigel Farage’s Clacton by-election fight will cost taxpayers an estimated quarter of a million pounds, an official has suggested.

The Reform chief is facing comedy candidates including Count Binfance in next week’s vote after major political rivals boycotted the contest. They accused him last month of a political stunt last month for triggering the vote amid a Commons probe over a £5million gift received from a Thai-based crypto billionaire.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today, chief executive of Tendering district council, Ian Davidson, said the ballot paper with 34 candidates was just under a metre long.

He said: “We’ve got 34 candidates, which is the most number of candidates any parliamentary election has ever had. And the ballot paper is just under a metre a long. The cost of actually printing, running, and posting things like that is about four times the cost of the General Election where we had five candidates.”

No further action will be taken by police after Zack Polanski shared a photo of a man with a T-shirt showing a guillotine and the phrase “we’re only making plans for Nigel”.

The Metropolitan police’s decision comes after the Green party leader for England and Wales said he had made an “inadvertent mistake” and would not apologise to Nigel Farage.

A Met spokesperson said: “We absolutely understand the reaction to this image being shared online, particularly in the context of increasing threats toward politicians.

“While there will be people who will argue that those who shared the image in this Instagram post should be subject to criminal action, our review has concluded that on this occasion, the threshold is not met.”

Nigel Farage may have landed himself in a humiliating contest with Count Binface

NIGEL FARAGE’S desperate by-election gambit has descended into farce as his Reform party was rocked by fresh funding revelations.

It emerged that the Reform boss’s £5 million donation from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne, and other cash for the party, was referred to the National Crime Agency as suspicious.

Labour Party chair Anna Turley called the news “astonishing and deeply serious” and called on Mr Farage to “come clean and co-operate” with the agency.

The fresh scandal about Mr Farage’s funding, first reported by the Guardian, came as he faced the prospect of a hot summer campaigning to keep his Clacton seat in the face of a challenge by Count Binface.

The perennial comedy candidate was the only confirmed opponent to Mr Farage in the by-election he provoked to regain control of a media narrative over sleaze which was gradually paralysing his political operation.

However, the Tories, Labour, Greens, Liberal Democrats and Restore parties all called Reform’s bluff by confirming that they would not stand in the by-election, describing it as a farce.

The local Green party was the last to declare its abstention, issuing a statement saying “we have no intention of helping to legitimise a by-election that appears designed not to serve local residents but to serve Nigel Farage’s personal political ambitions.

“This contest is not about the people of Clacton. It is about one politician placing himself at the centre of a media spectacle and expecting local residents to play supporting roles in a drama of his own making.”
