Morning Star Editorial: Imperial ambitions laid bare in US–Israel attack on Iran

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth speaks during a press briefing at the Pentagon in Washington, March 2, 2026

THE attack on Iran by Israel and the US is a breach of international law so clear that the US “defence” secretary sees no reason to dress up his masters’ war as anything other than the exercise of imperial power.

Pete Hegseth has refused to rule out a ground invasion of the 94-million-strong Iranian nation, yet lashed out: “To the media outlets and the political left screaming ‘endless war,’ stop. This is not Iraq. This is not endless.”

Hegseth, and the US joint chiefs of staff chairman General Dan Caine claimed that the attacks were designed to prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapons system. Where this is a task more easily accomplished through negotiations the US/Israeli strategy is rather to target the Iranian leadership and its security forces.

It is clear that while the US is capable of mobilising powerful military assets to strike at Iran’s own military capacity and infrastructure — and the profits to be made in replenishing its hardware, missiles, drones and ammunition will profit US arms corporations — the immediate strategic interests being served are Israel’s.

The assassination of Iran’s leading cleric and state leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and not least the collateral death of dozens of primary schoolchildren, appears to have the effect of mobilising opinion in defence of Iran’s national sovereignty and there is nothing in the US/Israeli strategy that will convince the Arab street or opinion in the global South that the US can be trusted.

The parallel strategy to encourage regime opponents and dissident national groups to take to the streets in an ill-prepared “colour” revolution on the model that put neonazis into office in Ukraine (but largely failed in Georgia) seems unlikely to restore the Pahlavi royalist regime. More likely, it will expose any innocents who believe US promises and take to the streets, to renewed repression.

Disreputable though he is, and dangerous to boot, Hegseth’s frank espousal of imperial war aims unadorned by hypocritical words or faux-liberal sentiments is refreshing when compared to the weasel words of lapsed human rights lawyer Keir Starmer.

He seems aggravated that the Iranians responded to the Israeli/US assault by interdicting Israel and US military bases in the regime. He describes the Iranian response as reckless but not a word about the words and actions of Trump and Netanahayu.

He said: “Our decision that the UK would not be involved with the strikes on Iran was deliberate. Not least because we believe that the best way forward for the region and for the world is a negotiated settlement,” but says: “We have British jets in the air as part of co-ordinated defensive operations which have already successfully intercepted Iranian strikes” and the next day more fully commits British service personnel to join the US/Israeli military operation and allow British bases to be used.

The weasel words are: “…the collective self-defence of longstanding friends and allies, and protecting British lives.”

The friends and allies in the region are a collection of kleptomaniac “royal” families raised to rule by the British empire in the defence of oil profits. They are no friends of the British people but only of our ruling elite.

And now Trump says Starmer was too slow to change to back the US and Israeli assault, adding: “It took far too much time. Far too much time. That’s probably never happened between our countries before. It sounds like he was worried about the legality.”

Either Starmer is worried about the legality but went ahead or he doesn’t care.

It is clear that Trump holds Starmer in contempt. On this question alone he is at one with the British people.

Trump White House Mocks Abrego Garcia—and Provides ‘More Evidence of Contempt’ of Court

“Whoever thought this was cute at the time may be less giddy when this becomes evidence of intent to disobey a court order,” said one legal expert of a social media post from the White House.

The White House’s public response on Friday to an image of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland father who the Trump administration sent to a notorious prison in El Salvador last month, was to mock the migrant and the U.S. senator who successfully urged Salvadoran President Nayim Bukele to allow a visit with him—and critics said officials may come to regret that decision.

“I suspect this is going to show up in a variety of court pleadings,” said former U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance, who is now a law professor. “Whoever thought this was cute at the time may be less giddy when this becomes evidence of intent to disobey a court order.”

White Vance was among those who responded to a social media post from the White House’s official account on the platform X, in which it displayed the New York Times cover story featuring an image of Abrego Garcia and Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) at their meeting on Thursday.

The story headline read, “Senator Meets With Wrongly Deported Maryland Man in El Salvador”—but the White House crossed out the word “wrongly,” replaced “Maryland Man” with “MS-13 Illegal Alien,” and scrawled, “who’s never coming back” on the article about the father and sheet metal worker.

The digital graffiti was shared with the White House’s 1.6 million followers even though, as software engineer and writer Lakshya Jain said, “the White House admitted in court that they deported the wrong guy.”

Journalist David Leavitt added that the White House had given a federal court “more evidence of contempt,” two days after Chief Judge James Boasberg of the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. warned that there was “probable cause… to find the government in criminal contempt”—punishable by fines or prison time.

Boasberg ordered the administration last month to turn around two planes that were carrying migrants to El Salvador to be imprisoned at Bukele’s Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) under a $6 million deal. The White House disobeyed the order.

The administration has also flouted the U.S. Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling last week that found the White House must facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return to the United States. Officials have admitted he was sent to El Salvador due to an “administrative error.” Although officials including Vice President JD Vance have called him a “convicted” gang member and Bukele repeatedly called him a “terrorist” in the White House earlier this week, Abrego Garcia has not been convicted of any crimes. He was also protected by a 2019 court order which found he had a credible fear of persecution if he were deported to El Salvador.

Washington Post senior political reporter Aaron Blake said that by saying Abrego Garcia is “never coming back,” the White House was “basically taunting” the Supreme Court.

Attorney Aaron Regunberg added that White House officials were “explicitly declaring they will violate a unanimous Supreme Court order,” and reminded Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) of his earlier remarks that such defiance from President Donald Trump would trigger “extraordinary action.”

“So… where the fuck are you?” asked Regunberg Schumer.

At a press conference following his return to the U.S., flanked by Abrego Garcia’s wife, Van Hollen—who was widely praised this week for taking concrete action to advocate for his constituent—on Friday accused the Trump administration of “lying about this case from the beginning.”

“They’ve been trying to change the subject from the beginning,” said Van Hollen. “As I’ve said, and the courts have said—from the Supreme Court to the 4th Circuit, to the District Court—what this is about is adhering to the Constitution, to the right of due process. And that’s why we say: ‘Bring Kilmar home,’ so he can be afforded his rights under the Constitution. That’s what this is about.”

European Leaders Condemn Musk’s ‘Ominous’ Push for Germany to ‘Forget’ Holocaust

“We must not forget the tragic lesson of our past,” said Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. “Evil, violence and contempt cannot triumph anew.”

Billionaire enterpreneur Elon Musk insisted at a far-right rally in Germany over the weekend that the European country must move “beyond the past” and leave behind the memory of one of the deadliest genocides in history—but as leaders on the continent marked the 80th anniversary of the Auschwitz concentration camp liberation on Monday, several made clear that Musk’s advice was not welcome.

Musk’s comments on “‘the need to forget German guilt for Nazi crimes’ sounded all too familiar and ominous,” said Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Sunday. “Especially only hours before the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.”

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on the social media platform X, “I couldn’t agree more.”

The country’s ambassador to Israel said that while Musk claimed German children are treated as “guilty of the sins” of the Nazis during World War II, the government simply wants “them to grow up informed and responsible and to apply the lessons of Germany’s past.”

As Common Dreams reported, the Tesla CEO and key adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump made the remarks at a rally for Alternative for Germany (AfD) on Saturday, five weeks before Germans are set to vote in federal elections.

AfD is currently polling at 19%, trailing the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which is in first place at 28%. But leaders across Europe, including Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Scholz have warned that Musk appears to be angling for the spread of far-right ideologies—including neo-Nazism—in European countries.

The AfD has been designated a “suspected extremist” group by Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, and one of its candidates for public office last year said that “not all” Nazis who worked for Adolf Hitler’s government were criminals.

The party has been ostracized in Germany, with other political groups including the CDU ruling out the formation of a coalition government with the AfD, but last week CDU leader Friedrich Merz said he would push for tougher anti-immigration proposals even if they were submitted by the AfD.

Scholz, who represents the Social Democrats, toldStuttgarter Zeitung in response to Merz’s comments that “the firewall to the AfD must not crumble.”

As Tusk oversaw the liberation of Auschwitz anniversary on Monday, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, he alluded to Musk’s comments at the AfD rally.

“We must not forget the tragic lesson of our past,” he said on X, which is owned by Musk. “Evil, violence, and contempt cannot triumph anew.”

Musk’s comments came days after he appeared to flash a Nazi salute twice at an event for Trump’s inauguration.

In the U.S. on Sunday, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker addressed Musk’s remarks at the AfD rally on CNN, asking why Trump hadn’t spoken out against them.

“President Trump ought to be calling that out,” said the Democratic governor. “If he doesn’t agree with Elon Musk, if he doesn’t agree with two Sieg Heils at his own rally, and backing a party that backs Nazis, then he ought to say so. Why isn’t Donald Trump speaking out?”

Rail fare increase: Green Party calls for fare freeze and for railways to be taken into public ownership

Green Party’s co-leader Adrian Ramsay.

The Green Party of England and Wales has called for rail fares to be frozen on the day the government has announced that regulated fares will increase in January 2024.

Ramsay said: “This government is moving in completely the wrong direction. Fuel duty has been frozen since 2011, while air passenger duty cuts this year will be a disaster for the climate crisis by encouraging people to fly more. This is despite the fact UK rail passengers are already paying more to travel by train than flying and are faced with some of the most expensive tickets in Europe.

“Emissions from transport are higher than for any other sector of the economy. If the UK is to meet its climate commitments, then we need more people choosing trains over cars and planes, and we need more commuters opting for public transport and active travel to get to work. Making train travel more expensive, while closing rail ticket offices that support travellers to get the best deal, would underscore the government’s contempt for climate action and the travelling public.
