Japan has urged Israel to immediately cease actions that undermine a two-state solution, expressing “serious concerns” over the expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank, Japan’s Foreign Ministry said, Anadolu reports.

The message was conveyed by Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi during a meeting with his Israeli counterpart Gideon Sa’ar in Tel Aviv on Sunday, according to the ministry.

While Motegi condemned the Hamas attack of Oct. 7, 2023, he expressed “deep concern” over the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Motegi urged Israel to “take appropriate responses as to protection of civilians and ensuring the humanitarian assistance in Gaza,” the statement said.

He “strongly urged Israel to take appropriate responses” to ensure unimpeded humanitarian assistance by international organizations, including the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) and other NGOs.

On the situation in the West Bank, Motegi told his counterpart that settlement activities violate international law.

Expressing Japan’s “serious concerns” that settlement expansion and rising settler violence could further destabilize the region, he urged Israel to “immediately cease any unilateral actions that run counter to a two-state solution.”

Japan has dispatched Ambassador Takeshi Okubo and a specialist to the Civil-Military Coordination Center, which Motegi also inspected during the visit.

The US-led center was established to monitor implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement and coordinate humanitarian assistance for the Palestinian enclave.

Japan-Palestine High-level Political Dialogue

Motegi later met Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa in the West Bank, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said in a separate statement.

He explained Japan’s “consistent support” for a two-state solution and its position on Gaza reconstruction and Palestinian state-building.

Motegi said Japan would “actively” engage in international efforts toward rebuilding Gaza through its “efforts for sustaining peace.”

The two sides agreed to work together for peace and stability in the Middle East and to establish a “Japan-Palestine High-level Political Dialogue,” the statement said.

Motegi also visited Jalazone refugee camp near Ramallah.

The visit aimed to “comprehend the situation of Palestinian refugees” in the West Bank and to observe Japan’s support for Palestinian state-building efforts on the ground.

During his Middle East trip, Motegi will travel to Doha for talks with his Qatari counterpart before visiting India and the Philippines.

He asks how could anyone object to them starving people to death, forced marches like the Nazis did, bombing Gaza's hospitals and universities, mass-murdering journalists, healthworkers and starving people queuing for food, killing and raping prisoners and murdering children. He calls for people to stop obstructing his genocide for Israel.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Monday that the territorial unity of Ukraine, the Gaza Strip and Venezuela is not open to negotiation.

In a post on the X platform, Sanchez said that “respect for the sovereignty of all states and their territorial integrity is a non-negotiable principle, from Ukraine to Gaza, including Venezuela”.

Commenting on remarks by US President Donald Trump, who described Greenland as having a strong strategic position and said the United States needs it for national security reasons, Sanchez expressed his rejection of those statements.

He added that Spain “will always remain actively committed to the United Nations and will be in full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland”.

On Sunday, Spain, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay and Chile said in a joint statement that they “reject unilateral US military operations” in Venezuelan territory.

The statement, distributed by the Spanish authorities, said: “We express our deep concern about what is happening in Venezuela and our rejection of unilateral military actions carried out on Venezuelan territory.” Such actions had violated the “basic principles of international law, in particular the prohibition of the use of force and respect for territorial sovereignty established in the United Nations Charter.”

United Nations experts have called on Britain to protect the lives and rights of detained pro-Palestine activists who are on hunger strike.

In a written statement issued on Sunday, the UN experts said that eight pro-Palestine activists imprisoned in Britain have been on an open-ended hunger strike since 2 November.

They expressed deep concern about the detainees’ lives and their fundamental rights.

“We call on Britain to protect the lives and rights of detained pro-Palestine hunger strikers,” the statement said.

The experts noted that “Hunger strike is often a measure of last resort by people who believe that their rights to protest and effective remedy have been exhausted.”

The statement warned that the health of the hunger strikers has deteriorated significantly as they enter their second month without food. It stated that they face “critical risk of serious complications, including organ failure, irreversible neurological damage, cardiac arrhythmias and death.”

The UN experts urged British authorities to “ensure timely access to emergency and hospital care when clinically indicated, refrain from actions that may amount to pressure or retaliation, and respect medical ethics.”

Police officers watch as people take part in a national march for Palestine on Whitehall in central London, January 18, 2025

22 general secretaries sign joint statement demanding charges be dropped against Alex Kenny, Sophie Bolt, Ben Jamal and Chris Nineham over peaceful Palestine demo in January

TWENTY-TWO union general secretaries raised “deep concern about the erosion of the right to peaceful protest” in an open letter today, urging the Metropolitan Police to drop charges against four Palestine march leaders.

Paul Nowak of the TUC, Christina McAnea of Unison, Sharon Graham of Unite and the National Education Union (NEU’s) Daniel Kebede were among those who said that the charges against former union members who took part in peaceful protest on January 18 mark “an attack on our right to protest.”

The signatories together represent the vast majority of British trade union members.

The former NEU executive member Alex Kenny and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament general secretary Sophie Bolt were arrested alongside more than 70 other people including director of Palestine Solidarity Campaign Ben Jamal and Chris Nineham, the vice-chair of the Stop the War coalition.

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and ex-shadow chancellor John McDonnell were also voluntarily interviewed under caution in relation to the march.
