New research shows household debt has hit five-year high

BRITAIN’S energy crisis is “growing by the week,” campaigners warned today after research found that household debt has hit a five-year high of £216 as winter approaches.

The number of homes already owing money to their energy provider is up 11 per cent on last year, according to a survey by comparison website Uswitch.

Of those in arrears on their gas and electricity bills, 40 per cent say their debt is higher than last year and 28 per cent believe their position is about the same as 12 months ago.

Almost one in seven say they have gone from being in credit a year ago to owing money now.

More than half of households are worried about how they will pay their energy bills this winter and 49 per cent say they will wear extra layers of clothing at home so that they can manage with less heating.

And 25 per cent say they will not turning their heating at all, even when it is cold.

Millions of households to face higher energy bills this winter despite price cap

MILLIONS of cash-strapped households are facing higher gas and electricity bills this winter despite a lower energy price cap, the labour movement warned yesterday.

Amid declining wholesale prices, regulator Ofgem announced a new average annual energy cost across Britain of £1,923 from October 1 — down from £2,074.

Typical prepayment meter customers will see their bills falls to £1,949 a year.

But experts warned a decision by Tory ministers to cut government energy support alongside an increase in compulsory standing charges would hike costs for some, while many would see little or no change.

Public financing of the fossil fuel industry by G20 countries reached record levels in 2022, a new report has found. The fossil fuel industry is among the sectors most directly responsible for driving the climate crisis.

According to a report by the International Institute of Sustainable Development (IISD), $1.4 trillion of public money flowed into the industry last year in G20 countries, which are among the world’s largest economies. The staggering sums are more than double that of the pre-covid period, despite commitments made at the Glasgow COP26 climate summit in which world leaders pledged to the phasing out ‘inefficient’ subsidies for fossil fuels.

The IISD research found that much of the support related to mitigating the cost of energy for consumers, but that one third was driving investment in new fossil fuel production, equivalent to around $440 billion.

The report’s authors wrote: “This support perpetuates the world’s reliance on fossil fuels, paving the way for yet more energy crises due to market volatility and geopolitical security risks. It also severely limits the possibilities of achieving climate objectives set by the Paris Agreement by incentivizing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while undermining the cost-competitiveness of clean energy.

Tens of thousands to descend on Westminster this weekend in biggest protest against climate inaction

TENS of thousands of people are expected to descend on Westminster this weekend to join Britain’s biggest ever protest against the combined climate emergency and political crisis.

The four-day action organised by Extinction Rebellion (XR), which will be joined by actors, authors, musicians, trade unionists and human rights activists, is demanding that the government takes immediate action to tackle the linked crises.

“People’s pickets” were formed outside 16 government buildings earlier today to kick off the campaign of protest, calling for urgent new policies to tackle the climate emergency affecting people and communities across the country.
