Spanish actor Javier Bardem said the Nakba “never ended,” describing Israel’s actions in Gaza as “genocide” and its policies in the occupied West Bank as “ethnic cleansing and apartheid” in a message marking the anniversary of the 1948 mass displacement of Palestinians, Anadolu reports.

The US social media company X account of the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the United Nations on Friday shared Bardem’s recorded remarks during a screening for UN representatives of the Palestinian-themed film All That’s Left Of You.

In his message, Bardem stressed that the Palestinian people have long struggled against what he described as Israel’s policies of genocide and ethnic cleansing.

“We understand that the Nakba never ended. It is playing out today in Gaza as genocide and in the West Bank as ethnic cleansing and apartheid,” Bardem said.

The Spanish actor also praised the Palestinians’ century-long “determination to remain on their land and to thrive as a people with a rich culture who deserve to be free and to return home,” describing their struggle against erasure as one defined by extraordinary resilience, courage, and steadfast resolve.

The film, which portrays the trauma and search for hope experienced by three generations of a Palestinian family following the 1948 Nakba, was selected by Jordan as its submission for the 98th Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film.

Palestinians commemorate May 15 as the “Nakba” (“Great Catastrophe”) following Israel’s declaration of independence on May 14, 1948, and the subsequent forced displacement of Palestinians from their homes.

During the Nakba, Israel expelled nearly 1 million Palestinians from their homes and destroyed 675 Palestinian towns and villages. More than 70 massacres were carried out by Zionist militias, killing over 15,000 Palestinians.

While Israel continues what Palestinians and rights groups describe as genocide in Gaza, Israeli forces have also intensified raids, violence, and repression against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

Intercept: Leaked NYT Gaza Memo Tells Journalists to Avoid Words “Genocide,” “Ethnic Cleansing,” and “Occupied Territory”

Intercept (4/15/24)

How is information made legitimate, and when is it appropriate for journalists to introduce skepticism? What happens when only one side of a conflict is given the legitimate voice, always repeated and rarely questioned, even when those sources have proven many times to have promulgated lies?

Military studies scholars and analysts understand that there is always a long genesis of historical, political and economic factors that can eventually erupt into conflict. In many ways, US establishment media seemed unwilling or unable (but likely both) to narrate a more complex, historically accurate account of the war on Gaza.

The Intercept (4/15/24) reported that editorial directives at the New York Times and CNN, two of the most important news sources in the US, advised reporters to avoid certain “taboo” words, such as “genocide” and “massacre.” Yet between October 7 and November 24, 2023, the Times used the word “massacre” 53 times—referring to Israelis killed by Palestinians, but only once to refer to a Palestinian killed by Israel (Intercept1/9/24).

From November onward, as deaths in Gaza piled up, the Times habitually avoided using emotionally fraught terms for Palestinians. Another term, “ethnic cleansing,” was also barred from use, along with “refugee camps” and “occupied territories.”

As the Times source who leaked the directives said, “You are basically taking the occupation out of the coverage, which is the actual core of the conflict.”

US news outlets were crippled by these verbal restrictions, incapable of offering an accurate explanation of what was happening in Gaza by imposing such constraints on humanitarian language, and international principles and laws.

Islamophobic tropes

FAIR: On Campus Gaza Protests, Media Let Police Tell the Story—Even When They’re Wrong

FAIR.org (5/9/24)

Media frames are based on underlying assumptions, articulated through familiar tropes that appear unquestioned in language and representation. Some stories are recognizable as reflections of beliefs and myths, and others are accurate renderings when accompanied by on-the-ground documentation.

Seasoned journalists entrusted to cover such a monumental conflict seemed not to be schooled in the differences. They failed to identify the history and uses of atrocity stories as propaganda, and showed no awareness of the use of Islamophobic tropes such as the “brutish knife-wielding Arab terrorist,” or the West’s long history of Orientalism and the hypersexualized Arab male, as identified by Edward Said.

Establishment media applied a “lawlessness” trope, identified by Rebecca Solnit (A Paradise Built in Hell2009) as a dictate of convention to blame the victims of humanitarian disasters, when in fact in such crises, she argued, communities come together to help one another. The lawlessness frame was used to direct the causes of starvation away from Israel’s engineered famine, and point the finger of blame at starving Palestinians, who were being shot by IDF snipers as they looked for food.

By April 2024, when police were called to break up student encampments, media relied on another powerful framing device, complete with its attendant language, to condone police violence against students at colleges and universities, first at Columbia, then at other campuses around the country. Campuses, they said, had been infiltrated by “outside agitators” (FAIR.org5/9/24).

Yet the critical debate articulated by student protests was part of American public discourse at the time. Though they were violently attacked by pro-Israel protesters and US law enforcement, students helped move American sentiment about the genocide to the center of cultural and political debate. By the fall of 2024, students would be hit by a wave of repression and attacks on their civil liberties and rights to freedom of expression.

Were these stereotypes taken into consideration when deciding which stories would be told, which talking points would be followed, and which perspectives would be ignored? Many of the narratives we are left with, used to explain this so-called “Israel/Palestine conflict,” are familiar media constructs and simply cannot explain a genocide.

Language of confusion

The Complicit Lens, by Robin Andersen

OR Books (2026)

In so many ways, big media failed to provide accurate information about Israel’s bombing attacks and their consequences on the people in Gaza. They improvised a language of confusion, denial and justification.

A combination of media tropes and frames, together with verbal inventions, downplayed Israel’s increasingly brutal genocidal violence, along with the hollow echoes that explained away every military act of violence, as the media served as “stenographers to power.” These strategies facilitated the continuation of a genocide. The failure to accurately cover the destruction of Gaza was inimical to the basic professional canons of journalism.

Genocide does not happen without a language to incite it. From collective punishment to ethnic cleansing, and the destruction of infrastructure to the withholding of food, water and medical care, Israel continually committed war crimes on a much greater scale than the initial Hamas attacks. Such acts depended on the demonization of an entire people, and the undervaluing of Palestinian life was a major feature of US reporting.

In Gaza, in addition to dismantling civilian infrastructure such as hospitals, Israel also carried out the destruction of cultural heritage sites, universities, schools and mosques, acts of destruction understood to deliberately eliminate an entire group of people defined by their ethnicity, religion, culture and identity. These are the crimes of genocide. Yet the words associated with these crimes were rarely if ever used in establishment media reporting on Israel’s attacks on Gaza.

‘What This Describes Is Ethnic Cleansing’: Israeli Plan for Southern Lebanon Sparks Horror

“Israel will keep doing it as long as the world keeps looking away with their eyes while reaching out their hands to help fund it,” wrote one critic.

Critics accused Israel of plotting a mass ethnic cleansing campaign in southern Lebanon after a Wednesday report in The New York Times outlined a push by Israeli officials to expel Shiite Muslims from the area.

According to the Times, Israeli military officials have been privately pressing Christian and Druse communities in southern Lebanon to “force out any Lebanese from neighboring Shiite Muslim communities who have sought refuge among them as Israeli bombardments flatten Shiite towns.”

Local Christian and Druse leaders told the Times that they believed Israel was sending a “clear signal” that their goal is to drive out all Shiites, who make up the majority of people of southern Lebanon. Hezbollah is a Shiite militia group that has regularly fired rockets into Israel.

Ali Naser, a 26-year-old Shiite who lives near the Israel-Lebanon border, told the Times that he and his family had initially found shelter from Israeli bombing in the Christian town of Rmeish. However, he said that local leaders told him that they’ve come under great pressure from Israel to not give Shiites refuge.

“Israel wants to create a new buffer zone, it wants us out, what can we do?” asked Naser.

Adam Serwer, staff writer at The Atlantic, posted an excerpt of the Times’ report on Israel’s plans in Southern Lebanon and commented, “So what this describes is ethnic cleansing.”

Ashton Pittman, news editor at the Mississippi Free Press, shared Serwer’s opinion that Israel’s actions are “100% ethnic cleansing,” and chided the international community for once again sitting on its hands while Israel carries out illegal forced displacement of Shiite Muslims.

“Israel will keep doing it,” he wrote, “as long as the world keeps looking away with their eyes while reaching out their hands to help fund it.”

George Washington University political scientist Marc Lynch also argued that the world should doing more to stop Israel’s invasion of Lebanon.

“Israel’s open ethnic cleansing of south Lebanon and declared intent to occupy its neighbor’s territory should be the subject of intense international outrage, pressure, and mobilization,” wrote Lynch.

The human rights organization DAWN on Wednesday cited recent remarks from Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz about Israel’s plans to level Lebanese villages adjacent to Israel’s border, while also refusing to allow Lebanese citizens who evacuated the area to return.

Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man, director for Israel-Palestine at DAWN, accused Israel of “accelerating its agenda to take over more land, this time in Lebanon.”

“[Israel’s] track record in Palestine and across the region makes clear it won’t stop without concrete consequences,” said Omer-Man, “and states should act before it’s too late.”

United Nations emergency relief coordinator Tom Fletcher warned on Tuesday that “a cycle of coercive displacement is unfolding” in Lebanon, where Israel’s military invasion has so far displaced more than 1.1 million people.

Fletcher also said that the conflict in southern Lebanon was causing “anxiety and tensions at levels I have not witnessed in many years” in the region.

The United Nations has warned of “ethnic cleansing” committed by Israel in the occupied West Bank, citing the displacement of more than 36,000 Palestinians over the past year.

In a report released on Tuesday, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said the scale of displacement represents “forced displacement on an unprecedented scale”, raising concerns about a coordinated policy of mass transfer.

The report stated that the developments suggest efforts aimed at permanent displacement of Palestinians from parts of the occupied territories.

It also documented a sharp rise in Israeli settler violence, recording 1,732 attacks causing injuries or property damage in the past 12 months, compared with 1,400 incidents in the previous period.

According to the report, these attacks have included intimidation, destruction of homes, and damage to agricultural land, contributing to worsening living conditions for Palestinian communities.

The UN described the violence as “coordinated, strategic and widespread”, adding that it often occurs with near-total impunity. It also stated that Israeli authorities play a “pivotal role” in enabling or facilitating such actions.

The report highlighted a significant escalation during the olive harvest season in October, when 42 attacks injured 131 Palestinians, including women and children — the highest monthly toll recorded since 2006.

It added that increasing restrictions on farmers’ access to their land, alongside the involvement of armed settlers and soldiers, have made the most recent harvest season the worst in decades.

The UN called on Israeli authorities to immediately halt settlement expansion and take steps to prevent further displacement and violence, warning that continued developments could further destabilise the situation in the occupied West Bank.

The United Nations has expressed concern over the risk of ethnic cleansing in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, citing intensified military operations and the large-scale displacement of Palestinian civilians.

In a report released on Thursday, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said that escalating attacks, widespread destruction of residential areas and restrictions on humanitarian aid “appear designed to create a permanent demographic change in Gaza”.

The report stated that the systematic destruction of entire neighbourhoods, combined with forced displacement aimed at creating long-term removal of the population, raises serious concerns.

“This, along with forced displacement that appears designed to create a permanent displacement, raises concerns about ethnic cleansing in Gaza and the West Bank,” the report said.

Israeli officials have previously rejected allegations of ethnic cleansing, saying military operations are directed at armed groups and conducted in accordance with international law.

The UN report comes amid continued hostilities and warnings from humanitarian agencies about deteriorating living conditions for civilians in both Gaza and parts of the West Bank.
