Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on Friday forced his way into Ofer Prison, west of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, in a visit marked by intimidation and abuse of Palestinian detainees, Anadolu reports.

Ben-Gvir entered the prison accompanied by senior police officials, including Police Commissioner Yaakov Shabtai, days before the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Israel’s Channel 7 reported, saying that stun grenades were fired near Palestinian prisoners’ cells during the visit.

Ben-Gvir, known for publishing inflammatory videos targeting Palestinian detainees and repeatedly threatening them, has openly boasted about tightening prison conditions for Palestinians since taking office in late 2022.

During his tour, he said the changes imposed on prisons were “not enough” and vowed to push for legislation allowing the execution of Palestinian prisoners.

“This is not a luxury hotel. It is a real prison,” Ben-Gvir said, expressing satisfaction with what he described as a “fundamental change” in detention conditions.

Conditions for Palestinian prisoners have sharply deteriorated under Ben-Gvir’s tenure amid severe restrictions, widespread abuse and noticeable weight loss among detainees.

Palestinian and Israeli rights groups say former prisoners released in recent months have reported systematic torture, sexual violence, starvation and medical neglect, with some showing signs of severe psychological trauma.

In November 2025, Israel’s parliament advanced at first reading a bill introduced by Ben-Gvir’s far-right Otzma Yehudit party that would allow the death penalty for Palestinians convicted of killing Israelis. The proposal still requires second and third readings to become law, and no vote date has been set.

More than 9,300 Palestinians are currently held in Israeli prisons, including about 350 children, according to figures through early February.

Rights organizations have repeatedly warned that abuse of Palestinian detainees has intensified since October 2023, alongside Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza.

He calls for people to stop obstructing his genocide for Israel.

Welsh by-election shows far right isn’t the only alternative to establishment parties

Plaid Cymru’s by-election win in Wales shows that space still exists for progressive politics despite Nigel Farage’s claims.

Welsh party Plaid Cymru, an advocate for independence from the United Kingdom, delivered a major blow to both the Labour Party and Reform UK in a by-election for the devolved parliament, the Senedd. Plaid candidate Lindsay Whittle won 47% of the vote in Caerphilly, leaving Reform behind at 36% and Labour at just 11% – an astonishing 35-point drop compared to the previous election. The result marks Labour’s first loss of the seat in more than a century.

“This result shows that Plaid is no longer just an alternative, we are now the real choice for Wales, the only party able to stop billionaire-backed Reform,” party leader Rhun ap Iorwerth said after the result was announced. Ahead of the election, Reform had invested substantial resources into the campaign, with Nigel Farage apparently confident a win in Wales would prove his claim that the far right has become the only true alternative to Britain’s two establishment parties.

In reality, while the by-election confirmed that both Labour and the Conservatives remain in crisis after years of backing austerity, it actually showed that the far right can still be stopped by more progressive alternatives. “In every corner of Britain, people are calling out for an alternative to the misery faced by millions and candidates who will stand up against the hate and division sold by Reform and the shameful parroting of Farage’s rhetoric by Keir Starmer and his weakling Labour government,” the Peace and Justice Project wrote on social media.

Since the 2024 general election, Prime Minister Starmer’s shift to the right on everything from austerity to migration and Palestine solidarity has alienated much of Labour’s base and beyond. Many polls now predict the party could be shattered in upcoming elections. Although Reform UK has so far benefited the most from the widespread frustration and anger, positioning itself as the main alternative, progressive political forces have also gained significant ground.

The early announcement of a new left party by independent MPs Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana drew more than 600,000 expressions of support, while the Green Party has seen thousands of new members join in recent months. Following the election of a new leadership team headed by Zack Polanski, the Greens announced their membership had doubled to 140,000. Both the groups have rejected Reform’s hate-driven narrative and scapegoating of migrants, while also condemning Labour for failing to address people’s real concerns since taking office.

“This Senedd by-election result shows that people are sick of the Westminster establishment and its persistent scapegoating of marginalized communities instead of effectively dealing with the issues we all face,” the Peace and Justice Project stated. While Reform’s failed bid in Caerphilly suggests that not everyone has accepted the idea that the far right is the only alternative to business as usual in British politics, progressives still face the enormous challenge of mobilizing on a larger scale ahead of future elections – including the 2026 run for the Senedd – to counter far-right narratives and build a vision of hope for working-class communities across Britain.

More than 110,000 people join Tommy Robinson-organised protest featuring racist conspiracy theories and hate speech

More than 110,000 people have taken part in a far-right street protest organised by the activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, known as Tommy Robinson, in what is thought to be the largest nationalist event in decades.

Marchers travelled to London by train and coach for a demonstration, which was billed as a “festival of free speech”, but by its conclusion had amplified racist conspiracy theories and anti-Muslim hate speech across Whitehall.

The scale of the protest vastly outgrew police estimates resulting in tense and at times violent clashes between protesters and police.

The Metropolitan police said at least 25 people were arrested and 26 officers were injured, including four who were seriously hurt. Marchers were arrested for a range of offences, including affray, violent disorder, assaults and criminal damage.

The crowds were addressed by Elon Musk, who dialled in via video link and spoke of “the rapidly increasing erosion of Britain”, before calling for the dissolution of the UK parliament.

Morning Star Editorial: The left must defeat the far right, because Labour certainly won’t

People take part in a Stand Up to Racism protest in Epping, Essex, entitled Defend Refugees – Stop the Far Right – No to Fascist Tommy Robinson, following protests outside the former Bell Hotel in Epping, July 27, 2025

The far right will not be beaten unless its racism is challenged: Labour echoes it.

It will not be beaten either unless we offer different answers to people’s accurate perception that Britain is becoming a run-down, ramshackle country of enfeebled services, collapsing infrastructure and falling living standards. Labour clings to Thatcherite orthodoxies on privatisation, unfettered banks and all-powerful markets long after the public have seen through the rip-off.

The right have the wind in their sails because their narrative, that immigration is the main cause of this country’s ills, has been allowed to crowd out others. We need public campaigning on the real issues: the cost of living, the council cuts. The NHS: where a Trump trade deal forcing up medicine prices is ideal ground to battle a far right that idolises him.

As these arguments are not being made by Labour, they need to be made by others.

‘Education must remain a beacon of hope, dignity, and solidarity’

Members of the National Education Union (NEU) hold a rally outside the National Education Union (NEU) in London as strike action is taken by sixth form college teachers, November 28, 2024

TEACHING unions have hit out at “shamefully cruel” far-right attempts to make migrant children feel unwelcome in school.

More than 400 trade unionists slammed bigots for protesting outside of schools that work with the Schools of Sanctuary scheme.

The refugee charity has supported dozens to become welcoming places for all children, including newcomer children.

They have been targeted by the far right following online misinformation over five-year-olds being asked to write Valentine’s cards to asylum-seekers as part of the scheme.

Leading members of the National Education Union (NEU), NASUWT teachers’ union and University and College Union (UCU) are among those who signed the open letter to media editors.

It says: “We reject the divisive and dangerous rhetoric of the far right, and we believe the calls to protest against Schools of Sanctuary are not only wrong but shamefully cruel.

“These protests target some of the most vulnerable children in our society, seeking to make them feel unwelcome in the very places that should offer them hope.

“Such actions do nothing to improve our communities and everything to spread fear and hatred. As educators, we stand united in our commitment to safe, inclusive schools where every child — regardless of origin — can thrive.”

It adds: “In a world where too many children experience loss and trauma, the message that they are safe, valued, and part of our community is not only morally right but educationally vital.
