Russia evacuating employees from Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant in wake of attack

Russia started a large wave of evacuation on Saturday from Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant following US-Israeli attacks that killed one of the plant’s security personnel, Russian media reported.

Citing Alexey Likhachev, the head of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, state news agency Tass said 198 employees are expected to return to Russia within two or three days. Russia helped build the plant and, as of last year, had some 700 personnel working there.

Likhachev underlined that developments around the plant are unfolding according to an “undesirable scenario.”

“As they say, our bad premonitions were not wrong. Overall, the escalation of the conflict around the Persian Gulf is leading to corresponding consequences near the plant,” he said.

One member of the plant’s security personnel was killed when it was hit on Saturday, Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency reported.

The outlet said that one of the plant’s auxiliary buildings was damaged by the blast and shrapnel.

The region has been on alert since the US and Israel launched a joint offensive on Iran on Feb. 28, killing more than 1,340 people to date, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.

US proposed 48-hour ceasefire with Tehran on April 2, reports Iranian media

The US proposed a 48-hour ceasefire with Iran on April 2 through a third country, the semi-official Fars News Agency reported Friday, citing an informed source.

“The US, on April 2, proposed a 48-hour ceasefire through one of the friendly countries,” the source told Fars.

The proposal came after “escalating tensions and challenges faced by US forces in the region,” the source added.

According to the news agency, Iran did not respond in writing but instead replied “on the ground” by continuing heavy attacks.

The source also said that “US diplomatic efforts to halt the fighting have intensified, particularly after a reported strike on a US military depot on Bubiyan Island in Kuwait.”

The US and Israel on Feb. 28 launched an air offensive on Iran, killing over 1,340 people so far, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, along with Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure while disrupting global markets and aviation.

Iran adds US economic assets to ‘target list’: Media

Iran has expanded its list of potential targets to include American economic assets, Iranian media reported Sunday, Anadolu reports.

The Fars News Agency, citing an unnamed Iranian official, said that Tehran had revised its targeting strategy so that it would no longer focus solely on US and Israeli military sites.

According to the official, Iran has broadened its “list of targets” to include “American capital and interests.”

The official said the decision followed what he described as changes in statements by US and Israeli officials “that now include direct threats against the Iranian people.”

Late Sunday, the US and Israel carried out airstrikes targeting oil storage facilities in and around Tehran. The attacks caused significant damage to several storage facilities, including the Shahran Oil Depot.

Regional escalation flared up since Israel and the US launched a joint attack on Iran on Feb. 28, killing more than 1,200 people, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and injuring over 10,000 others, according to Iranian authorities.

Tehran retaliated with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel, Iraq, Jordan and Gulf countries that are home to US military assets.
