More than 110,000 people join Tommy Robinson-organised protest featuring racist conspiracy theories and hate speech

More than 110,000 people have taken part in a far-right street protest organised by the activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, known as Tommy Robinson, in what is thought to be the largest nationalist event in decades.

Marchers travelled to London by train and coach for a demonstration, which was billed as a “festival of free speech”, but by its conclusion had amplified racist conspiracy theories and anti-Muslim hate speech across Whitehall.

The scale of the protest vastly outgrew police estimates resulting in tense and at times violent clashes between protesters and police.

The Metropolitan police said at least 25 people were arrested and 26 officers were injured, including four who were seriously hurt. Marchers were arrested for a range of offences, including affray, violent disorder, assaults and criminal damage.

The crowds were addressed by Elon Musk, who dialled in via video link and spoke of “the rapidly increasing erosion of Britain”, before calling for the dissolution of the UK parliament.

Labour’s reluctance to name Brexit as the cause of so many problems hasn’t stopped Reform’s rise. It’s time to try the truth

So begins another chapter in the liberation struggle. Released from bondage to the EU, Britain finds itself subjugated to a more insidious foe. The border that should have been sealed is wide open. The foreign hordes are still coming, but their passage is no longer directed by bureaucrats from Brussels. This time, national emancipation depends on breaking the tyranny of human rights lawyers.

That is the plot to Nigel Farage’s Brexit sequel, previewed on Tuesday in an airport hangar in Oxfordshire. The Reform UK leader laid out plans for “mass deportation” of migrants – all who arrive without permission, plus those who are here already and came by illicit channels.

Tens of thousands will be targeted. There would be cash incentives for anyone volunteering to leave. Refusers would be rounded up, detained in camps and flown to their countries of origin or, if those places won’t have them, some other place. A remote island, maybe. The exchequer would remunerate receptive governments.

If deportees face the likely prospect of torture or death on arrival, well, that would be unfortunate but not sufficient grounds to stop the flights.

Are we really going to spend the next four years watching Farage leaf casually through the familiar playbook, running the same campaign to the fawning applause of the same courtier commentariat? Is it too much to expect a Labour government to raise, by way of rebuttal, the Reform leader’s proven failure as an arbiter of the national interest? We tried listening to him. His probity and judgment were sold as the product called Brexit. It turned out to be a piece of shit. Enough people already know this is the truth, but it would be liberating to hear it from the prime minister.

Zarah Sultana made a surprise appearance on the main stage at Forwards, delivering a passionate speech to the crowd before introducing Nia Archives.

The MP for Coventry South resigned from the Labour Party in July in order to co-found a new grassroots party with fellow independent MPs including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Earlier on Sunday, Sultana had taken part in a panel discussion called The Movement Forward: Pissed off with Politics on the Information Stage at the festival on the Downs.

On the main stage, Sultana said: “A lot of people are fed up. I am too. Fed up with being told that this is just how things are. Fed up with being asked to settle for less. Fed up with the idea that the best we can do is manage decline, implement austerity, blame migrants, Muslims and trans people, enable genocide in Gaza, and have fascism growling at the door.

“But here’s the truth: politics is not only what happens in parliament or on the news. Politics is us. It’s here. It’s all of you.

“It’s people deciding they won’t accept the world as it is. It’s people daring to imagine the world as it should be.

“Every great change we’ve ever seen, from rights at work, to votes for women, to the NHS didn’t come from the top down.

“It came because ordinary people stood up and said: we aren’t going to take this anymore.

“And when people come together with that conviction, something powerful happens: hope.

“Not the shallow kind that tells us to just wait and see, but the deep kind that comes when we believe we can build something new, and we start doing it.”

Shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick has attended a demonstration organised by a neo-Nazi party and posted a picture of himself with the founder of a terror organisation.

On Sunday evening, Jenrick attended a rally organised by members of the Homeland Party in Epping. The event was addressed by Callum Barker, a member neo-Nazi group Homeland who have a history of endorsing racism and terrorism.

Jenrick later posted pictures of himself with demonstrators, which included Eddy Butler, one of the founders of neo-Nazi terror gang Combat 18. The numerals in Combat 18 refer to the first and eighth letters of the alphabet, referencing the name of Adolf Hitler.

After the demonstration, Butler posted a picture of himself standing directly behind Jenrick with the text, “At the Bell Hotel riding shotgun for Robert Jenrick.”

Legitimising fascist violence

Jenrick’s attendance at the demonstration legitimises a growing fascist movement that is targeting refugees across the South East and around the country.

Many participants in Sunday’s Epping demonstration had been at a protest earlier in the day in Canary Wharf, where men in balaclavas clashed with police outside asylum-seeker accommodation at the Britannia Hotel.
