ACTIVISTS sabotaged utilities infrastructure at the offices of major fossil fuel investors today, declaring the start of “disruption like never before” against fossil fuel finance.

Shut The System cut cables and superglued electrical service cabinets at JPMorganChase and Allianz in London, demanding they stop financing the climate emergency and genocide in Gaza.

At Barclaycard’s Northampton headquarters, activists cut the 5G communications mast serving the building.

The underground climate campaign said the action marked the launch of a period of sustained sabotage against financial institutions deemed “key culprits” in the climate crisis, running until the end of September.

It urged civilians to join a “Summer of Sabotage” by destroying the property and operating systems of institutions providing “critical support to deadly industries globally.”

World leaders to gather in France to tackle global emergency in the oceans

THE world’s nations will gather in France next month to tackle what the United Nations says is a global emergency facing global oceans.

Conference secretary-general Li Junhua told reporters on Tuesday that he hopes the third UN Ocean Conference would not be another routine meeting but “the pivotal opportunity” to accelerate action and mobilise people in all sectors and across the world.

The conference aims to unite governments, scientists, businesses and civil society to take action and raise money to address these and other crises facing the oceans and the people who rely on them for their survival.

French UN ambassador Jerome Bonnafont said his country’s priorities for the conference included obtaining 60 ratifications of the treaty to protect biodiversity in the high seas, which was adopted in March 2023, so that it comes into force. 

The treaty’s mission is to ensure sustainable fishing, mobilise support to protect and conserve at least 30 per cent of the oceans’ waters, fight plastic pollution, “accelerate decarbonisation” of maritime transport and mobilise financing.

Net-zero banks show little sign of slowing down fossil fuel financing

A criticism often levelled at Mark Carney’s Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero initiative (GFANZ) and in particular its banking arm, the Net Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA), is that member banks are not required to set firm policies limiting fossil fuel investment.

New figures published by NGO the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) in its annual ‘Banking on Climate Chaos’ report reveal that the world’s 60 largest banks by asset size, the majority (49) of which have made net-zero commitments, have invested $5.5trn dollars in the fossil fuel industry since the Paris Agreement was signed seven years ago. 

This new data, which records banks’ lending, debt underwriting and equity capital market activities, adjusting each transaction according to how much exposure the borrower or issuer has to a specific sector, shows that in 2022 alone, the 60 banks provided $673bn to more than 3,000 companies engaged in fossil fuel activities, including $150bn specifically to the top 100 companies expanding fossil fuels. 

The total sum for 2022 represents a 9% decrease compared with 2021 financing, although RAN’s report dismisses the idea that this reduction indicates “a positive, long-term trend”. This is because a more significant trend observed over the past year, given the current context of “rising interest rates, a strong dollar, and wartime profits”, is that several large oil majors that often account for a significant share of bank loans no longer need banks’ support following a year of bumper profits.
