Hezbollah said Thursday that it shot down an Israeli military drone over eastern Lebanon, claiming the aircraft was targeted with a missile in the Bekaa region, Anadolu reports.

In a statement, the group said its fighters downed a Heron 1 drone belonging to the Israeli army.

According to the statement, the drone was flying over the Nahle area in the eastern Bekaa Valley when it was struck by “a specialized missile.”

There was no comment from the Israeli military on Hezbollah’s statement.

Earlier Thursday, Hezbollah said in a series of statements that it had targeted Israeli army vehicles and troop concentrations in the southern Lebanese towns of Tayr Harfa, Deir Siriane, and Odaisseh with drones and missiles in response to Israeli ceasefire violations and ongoing assaults.

Despite a ceasefire that took effect on April 17, Israel has continued its aggression in Lebanon since March 2, killing 3,711 people and wounding 11,483 others as of Wednesday, while displacing more than one million people, according to official figures.

Assets and infrastructure linked to companies owned by Elon Musk in the Gulf and Israel are being reviewed for inclusion in Iran’s list of military targets, Iranian media said on Thursday, Anadolu reports.

Fars News Agency said the move is being considered following what it described as evidence that US and Israeli forces have used infrastructure operated by Musk-linked companies, including the Starlink satellite network and the X social media company, in attacks against Iran.

Fars said previous reports had revealed military cooperation involving Musk-linked projects, including Starshield and the launch of military satellites used for earth observation, encrypted communications and secure data transmission.

The agency said infrastructure associated with Starlink in Israel, Qatar, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, as well as SpaceX-related facilities and investments, were among the assets under review.

An unnamed source cited by Fars claimed that the US military, with support from companies linked to Musk, had been involved in actions, including attacks on water infrastructure in southern Iran.

The source said Iran “reserves the right to target facilities linked to holding companies under Musk’s management across the region and in Israel.”

Israel on Thursday denied entry to a French journalist and deported her to Paris over her criticism of Israel’s two-year genocidal war in the Gaza Strip, Anadolu reports.

Israeli Communications Minister Amichai Chikli said in a post on US social media company X that French journalist Alice Froussard was leaving Ben Gurion Airport and returning to France.

“I am pleased to announce that Alice Froussard, the pro-Hamas French journalist who believes the Oct. 7 massacre should be viewed in context, is leaving Ben Gurion Airport on her way back to Paris,” Chikli wrote.

According to Israeli news website The Times of Israel, the Foreign Ministry said Froussard arrived in Israel on Thursday for work but was stopped and placed on a return flight to France.

The ministry claimed that investigators found that the journalist had made a series of statements deemed hostile to Israel, including describing Israeli military operations in Gaza as a “massacre,” accusing Israel of apartheid and allegedly justifying the Oct. 7, 2023 events.

Froussard did not immediately comment on her deportation or the allegations against her.

According to The Times of Israel, Froussard has spent the past six years living and working in Jerusalem and Ramallah and has worked for several French media outlets, including Radio France Internationale (RFI), France Culture, Le Figaro, TV5 Monde and Mediapart.

The report said the French Embassy in Israel expressed strong dissatisfaction with the decision.

Israel has deported and barred entry to several foreign journalists and activists in recent months over criticism of Israeli policies and actions.

The Israeli army has killed nearly 73,000 people and injured over 173,000 others, mostly women and children, in a brutal offensive in Gaza since October 2023, that has also caused widespread destruction to 90% of the enclave’s civilian infrastructure.

‘A stain on our city’: UK urged to ban Israeli property fair selling stolen Palestinian land

UK ministers are under mounting pressure to ban a London real estate event accused of marketing land in illegal Israeli settlements, after several MPs challenged the government in Parliament and Green Party leader Zack Polanski warned that allowing it to proceed would be a “stain” on the capital.

The Great Israeli Real Estate Event 2026 is scheduled to take place in London on Sunday 14 June. Its website says attendees will be able to meet consultants on Aliyah, higher education, finances, taxation, mortgages, transferring funds and home management, and invites them to “explore the best Anglo neighbourhoods to find your dream home”. It lists areas including Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Ramat Beit Shemesh, Netanya, Raanana, Modiin, Herzliya, Haifa, Ashdod, Beersheva and Ashkelon, while offering “special deals exclusive to event participants”.

The event promotes property in illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, including Gush Etzion, alongside homes inside Israel. During a debate in Parliament on Tuesday, Liberal Democrat foreign affairs spokesman Calum Miller described the event  as “Palestinian land being advertised, bartered and sold on the streets of our capital.”

Addressing the Commons, Richard Burgon, the Labour MP for Leeds East, urged Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper to stop the event, drawing a direct comparison with Russia’s occupation of Ukraine.

“Let us just imagine that, this weekend in our capital city, there was a ‘great Russian real estate event’ selling off Ukrainian land. Quite rightly and without hesitation, the Government would move to ban such an illegal event. This weekend in London, there is the Great Israeli Real Estate Event, openly advertising the illegal sale of land in the illegally occupied Palestinian territories. Given that the Government rightly recognised the state of Palestine, surely we should now move to ban this event, which is selling off land illegally in Palestine.”

Cooper did not commit to banning the event, but said the government was looking into it. “We are pursuing that particular event. If we find any cases where there are breaches of UK law, we will also pursue them,” she told MPs. “The wider issue is that nobody in the UK should be advertising illegal settlements. Nobody should be pursuing illegal settlements. No businesses or organisations should be getting involved in them.”

Polanski, leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, also wrote to Cooper and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan demanding urgent intervention, describing the planned event as “deeply disturbing”.

“This is obscene,” Polanski wrote on X. “I’ve called on @MayorofLondon and @YvetteCooperMP to stop the event and for this govt to take real action on illegal settlements.”

In his letter, Polanski said the event is due to come to London “to auction stolen Palestinian land to the highest bidder” and “proudly promotes the sale of land in settlements like ‘Gush Etzion’ in the occupied West Bank, marked as illegal under international law”.

Polanski warned that “many Londoners are rightfully concerned that an event promoting land confiscation and the destruction of homes is set to take place in our city.”

Addressing Khan, Polanski said: “Sadiq, you have previously stood with campaigners and Londoners of conscience in condemning the DSEI arms fair, and I welcomed your leadership on that issue. I ask that you now take the same principled stance against this proposed land sale, which would be a stain on our city if allowed to proceed.”

READ: 6 nations impose sanctions on networks financing, enabling occupiers’ attacks in West Bank

Polanski also called on Cooper to move beyond statements of concern. “Your government has a moral and legal responsibility to take action against illegal settlements,” he wrote. “This must include banning the import of settlement goods and imposing further sanctions on all Israeli Government officials responsible for authorising illegal settlements. Empty condemnation is not enough — we need to see action.”

The Green Party leader also highlighted Bank Leumi’s sponsorship of the event, saying the Israeli bank had been identified by Human Rights Watch for directly supporting settlement expansion through mortgage loans and work with construction companies building on stolen Palestinian land, including in Gush Etzion.

Cooper used the wider debate to announce new sanctions against organisations accused of supporting illegal settlements and settler violence, and said the government had strengthened business guidance to make clear that British citizens and businesses should not conduct economic or financial activity in illegal settlements.

“The expansion of the illegal settlements is not only deeply wrong, because Palestinians are being forced from their own land, sometimes in the most brutal of circumstances, but deliberately designed to try to make it impossible to ever get to a two-state solution,” Cooper told MPs. “That is the purpose for some of those involved, and we should be very clear on that and call it out for what it is.”

However, Cooper stopped short of backing a formal trade ban. She said the government wanted to target illegal settlements and activity linked to them, while avoiding an impact on what she described as “long-standing, legitimate trade” with Israel.

New McCarthyism? Government targets Cuba solidarity groups in sweeping investigation

WASHINGTON—Federal investigators at the Justice and Treasury Departments have reportedly launched a sweeping inquiry into Cuba solidarity organizations, raising the danger of a revival of McCarthyite tactics to target Americans who oppose U.S. policy toward the island nation.

According to Fox News, the DOJ and Treasury are investigating U.S. non-profits and activist groups that do Cuba solidarity work. The Trump administration alleges the groups coordinate lobbying, messaging, fundraising, delegations, and political organizing efforts with Cuban government officials—activity the U.S. government frames as potential violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) and Treasury sanctions regulations.

Fox News claims to have “identified 145 non-profits, labor groups, advocacy organizations, and activist collectives across the U.S. that are mobilizing in support of the Cuban government and the Communist Party of Cuba” with supposedly “$1 billion in combined annual revenue.”

The organizations targeted by Fox include CodePink, National Network on Cuba, Hands Off Cuba Committees, Nuestra América convoy organizers, People’s Forum, the Party for Socialism and Liberation, the People’s Forum, BreakThrough News, the ANSWER Coalition, the African People’s Socialist Party, the Communist Party USA, Democratic Socialists of America, the Peace and Freedom Party, the Socialist Workers Party, the National Lawyers Guild, and labor unions, including SEIU affiliates and the International Association of Machinists.

The Venceremos Brigade, another of the groups now under scrutiny, traces its roots to 1969, when U.S. students and young people traveled to Cuba to participate in solidarity and labor work alongside the Cuban people.

For more than six decades, solidarity networks have operated openly, sending delegations, providing humanitarian aid, and advocating for an end to a blockade that the United Nations General Assembly has voted to condemn year after year.

The blockade of Cuba has failed for over 60 years in its goal of overthrowing the government there. It has, however, impoverished ordinary Cuban people and isolated the United States from its hemispheric neighbors.

Subpoenas meant to silence dissent

All of the groups are singled out by Fox News as part of what it brands a “pro-communist Cuba ecosystem,” but most of them are not linked to one another politically, organizationally, or ideologically. It is not clear how many among them are being actively investigated by the Justice or Treasury Departments at this time.

The factual basis for the investigations comes entirely from Fox News reporting, and no charges have been filed against any of the named organizations or individuals as of this writing. The escalation from investigations to formal subpoenas, however, makes the government’s intentions more obvious.

According to Fox News, the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control has served formal “Requests for Information”—administrative subpoenas—on CodePink co-founder Medea Benjamin and Twitch streamer Hasan Piker seeking financial, logistical, and communications records related to their participation in the March 2026 Nuestra América Convoy, which delivered desperately-needed humanitarian aid to Havana.

Responding to the news, CodePink said that no subpoena has been received as of Sunday. Benjamin posted a personal statement on X, however, declaring: “I am guilty. Guilty of loving the Cuban people. Guilty of believing Cuban children deserve medicine instead of sanctions. Guilty of believing that trying to save lives should not be treated like a crime.”

Piker took aim at Democrats who are so far not challenging the attacks on him and other Cuba activists. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, for instance, boosted a video posted to Threads where an individual mocked Piker. “Kamala would have never. That’s what you get for telling people to vote third party,” the video author said.

In a post to X, Piker warned, in his typical style, that the attacks won’t stop with just Cuba solidarity activists. He wrote: “every centrist blue maga who celebrates these subpoenas is a fucking moron. they think you’re all communists. they’re coming for you too.”

He further stated that centrist Democrats, whom he refers to as “blue maga,” are worried because “left flank candidates” who support Medicare for All and oppose U.S. cooperation in Israel’s wars “are winning insurgent races.” The implication of Piker’s message was that some Democrats may feel Trump’s probes undermine left-wing voices and activists, thereby helping them maintain control of their own party.

Making the costs of activism too high to bear

Fox News claims the government probe extends to as many as 40 U.S. citizens who joined the Nuestra América convoy, with additional subpoenas expected. No charges have been filed against any of them, either.

The government’s legal theory is instructive for determining its possible course of action, though. Legal experts cited in the Fox News reporting note that the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control can impose civil penalties under a “strict liability” standard—meaning the government does not need to prove intent. A criminal case under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, by contrast, would require evidence that a defendant willfully violated the law.

In other words, the administration holds a loaded weapon: It can pursue public harassment campaigns against activists who traveled openly and publicly to Cuba, delivering aid, without having to prove they did anything more than go. This is precisely the kind of legal ambiguity that authoritarian governments exploit to neutralize dissent—not necessarily by winning in court, but by making the cost of activism too great to bear.

The pattern is chillingly familiar to past episodes in U.S. history. The Trump administration has been escalating a new McCarthyism—weaponizing federal law enforcement against the left, not to address genuine security threats, but to silence political opposition and intimidate movements that challenge the bipartisan foreign policy consensus. The Cuba “investigation” follows that blueprint precisely.

Fox News’s own reporting acknowledges a key legal fact: Under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, advocacy itself is protected under the First Amendment, and registration under FARA doesn’t prohibit political activity. Yet the spectacle of federal subpoenas, Treasury Department probes, and multi-agency coordination serves a chilling function regardless of whether charges are ever filed.

Red Scare repeat

During the McCarthy era in the 1950s, the mere fact of investigation—of being named, scrutinized, and summoned—was enough to destroy careers, shutter organizations, and terrify entire communities of activists into silence.

second Fox News report describes federal investigators examining a May 9 meeting in Wilmington, Calif., where a Cuban Embassy diplomat, David Ramírez Álvarez, addressed approximately 50 activists and union members. He briefed them on pending congressional legislation related to Cuba, including bills that would ease the decades-old trade embargo.

Sen. Joseph McCarthy conducting his anti-communist witch hunt. | AP

The Embassy of Cuba denied any wrongdoing, with a spokesperson stating that Cuban diplomats strictly comply with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and that engaging with civil society organizations is standard diplomatic practice.

What the government is essentially criminalizing is lobbying for a change in U.S. foreign policy.

The Fox News investigation frames the probe as flowing from National Security Presidential Memorandum 7, issued by President Trump in September 2025, which directed federal agencies to investigate “organized structures, networks, entities, organizations, funding sources” connected to political activity deemed adverse to the administration’s interests.

Accusations that the groups now facing federal scrutiny are agents of a foreign power repeat the Cold War pattern of labeling critics of capitalism and U.S. foreign policy as agents of the Soviet Union.

Subpoenas, financial audits, and threatened prosecution are not necessarily national security work and could be a cover for political repression, as they were in the past. This new McCarthyism does not yet feature Senate hearing rooms packed with television cameras. So far, it relies on news reports from media outlets friendly to the Trump administration and letters from the Justice Department.

Just like the past McCarthyism, though, the implicit message is that dissent comes with a price.
