“Trump’s illegal war on Iran and the rule of law,” said one pair of campaigners, “establish an intolerable pattern of egregious abuses of power, directly threatening our constitutional order, our safety, and our way of life.”

After the unprovoked bombing of Iran over the weekend by the United States and Israel—strikes that included the unlawful assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Hosseini Khamenei—the call for US President Donald Trump to be impeached and removed from office has grown as the straightest path to hold the US leader to account for the attacks which policy and human rights experts have condemned as a serious war crime.

With a regional war in the Middle East that was already boiling from Gaza to Lebanon and from Syria to Yemen now exploding in the wake of the US-Israeli attacks on Iran, Globe and Mail columnist Debra Thompson on Sunday called Trump “the most dangerous man on the planet.”

US-POLITICS-CONGRESS-DEMOCRATS

As Trump Marches US Toward Iran War, Critics Ask: Where’s the ‘Pushback’ From Dems and Media?

“Rather than ending wars,” Thompson notes, “Trump has initiated military action eight times, carrying out attacks in seven countries (Syria, Iraq, Iran, Nigeria, Yemen, Somalia, and Venezuela) in 2025.” Such a pattern of violence and warmongering should make clear that failure to restrain Trump has only emboldened him.

“The recurring danger in this latest presidential aggression is that there are no guardrails, no constraints, and no post-hoc justification,” writes Thomson, “other than that Mr. Trump is the President of the United States and can do whatever he wants.”

But American presidents cannot simply do whatever they want. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll out Sunday, less than 25% support the president’s aggression against Iran. In the first wave of the US military attack, an Iranian school for girls was bombed, killing over 108 civilians, mostly children.

While some congressional lawmakers are pushing for a vote this week on a War Powers Resolution to curtail US military operations against Iran, others are demanding more robust action from Congress to bring Trump’s war-making to an end.

“Under Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution, only Congress has the power to declare war, as well as to raise and support armies, provide and maintain a navy, and fund and regulate the military,” declared novelist and political activists Stephen King on Saturday. “Impeach the SOB.”

Mike Hersh and Alan Minsky, respectively the communications director and executive director of the Progressive Democrats of America, argued in a Sunday op-ed for Common Dreams that “Trump’s illegal, unconstitutional war on Iran is not only a moral and humanitarian disaster, but also a profound constitutional crisis.”

According to Hersh and Minsky:

Trump’s illegal war on Iran and the rule of law establish an intolerable pattern of egregious abuses of power, directly threatening our constitutional order, our safety, and our way of life. These intertwined crises cry out for an immediate, decisive response by the Congress and the US public.

Therefore, PDA demands that all members of Congress, Democrats, Republicans, and Independents alike, uphold their oath of office to defend our constitutional republic. The Constitution offers one and only one remedy when President a repeatedly breaks the law and arrogantly refuses to abide by the limits on the power clearly laid out in the Constitution. That remedy is impeachment, followed by removal from office.

Matt Duss, executive vice president for the Center for International Policy, said that US lawmakers, as well as the American people they represent, “must also be ready to hold the president and his administration accountable for this breach of US and international law.”

“The failure to hold past presidents liable for war crimes and related violations of our own laws has helped lead to this dangerous moment, with a seemingly unrestrained president endangering millions of lives with impunity,” warned Duss. “The forever wars and the imperial presidency must finally come to an end.”

Greens win Gorton and Denton by-election for the left

Hannah Spencer has won a huge victory for the Green party over Reform UK and the Labour party in Gorton and Denton. The left united in their support behind Spencer and the Green party to defeat the evil promoted by Farage and Starmer’s parties. Both nasty right-wing parties were properly rejected.

Congratulation to Hannah and the Green Party, champions of the left, defeaters of evil.

Experiencing issues with this image not appearing. I suspect because it's so critical of Zionist Keir Starmer's support of and complicity in Israel's genocides.
Genocide denier and Current UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is quoted that he supports Zionism without qualification. He also confirms that UK air force support has been essential in Israel’s mass-murdering genocide. Keir Starmer objects to criticism of the IDF. He asks how could anyone object to them starving people to death, forced marches like the Nazis did, bombing Gaza's hospitals and universities, mass-murdering journalists, healthworkers and starving people queuing for food, killing and raping prisoners and murdering children. He calls for people to stop obstructing his genocide for Israel.

British government urged to act as Israel confirmed to have used F-35 throughout the Gaza genocide

A Lockheed Martin F35B Lightning II demonstrates it’s STOVL (Short Take off Vertical Landing) function during the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford, July 2016

ANTI-ARMS campaigners have urged the government to “correct the record” and end arms sales to Israel after the country’s use of F-35 jets — worth billions to supplier Lockheed Martin — throughout the Gaza genocide was confirmed.

Tel Aviv’s ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, said that Israeli pilots’ flight hours on the F-35 were “greater than that of all the pilots of the other foreign countries that were partners in developing the aircraft.”

He added: “When I visited there a few weeks ago, [Lockheed Martin’s] CEO told me that Israel’s information and developments ‘are worth many billions to my company’.”

The comments completely contradict the British government’s insistence that Israel is a “minor customer” of the global F-35 programme, the Campaign Against Arms Trade (Caat) pointed out.

Britain makes 15 per cent of the warplane. Israel has 48 F-35s, with 27 more on order.

George Monbiot: How is Reform’s charmless candidate still a contender in Gorton and Denton? Ask Labour

This byelection should have been a stroll for Keir Starmer’s party. Instead, all hope of defeating Matt Goodwin now seems to lie with the Greens

Every barb Labour has directed at the Greens can now be returned with interest. “It’s a wasted vote.” “Do you want to see Reform in power?” New polling ahead of the crucial Gorton and Denton byelection this week, while by no means decisive, puts the Greens first on 22%, followed by Reform UK (20%), then Labour (18%), with 31% undecided. But still Keir Starmer falsely claims that “only Labour can beat Reform”. Does he want to see Reform in power?

survey of 6,000 people by the group Persuasion UK found that by far the most effective message of five options was focused on corporate interests and went as follows: “Nigel Farage says he’s on people’s side – but when you take a closer look it’s pretty clear who he’s really fighting for, isn’t it? It’s the rich, the powerful, his mates in big business.” It explained that Reform UK has taken vast donations from fossil fuel investors and climate science deniers. This, Persuasion UK said, is why Farage wants to cut public services, workers’ rights and taxes for the richest. “He’s not smashing the system. He and his rich friends basically are the system.”

None of the other attack lines came anywhere near this for efficacy. So why doesn’t Labour use it? Because that might alienate the people Starmer seems keenest to appease: Labour’s own corporate backers and the billionaire proprietors of the rightwing press. The leadership’s key objective is not stopping Farage, but frightening people into voting Labour. Quite frankly, it has nothing else left.

One by one, it has destroyed the hopes that people vested in it, alienating potential voters on everything from Gaza to benefits to its self-destructive apeing of Reform’s rhetoric on immigration; from its vicious factional warfare against leftwingers in the party to its tearing up of environmental protections and attacks on wildlife, which, in a country of nature lovers, is utter, self-defeating madness. Disgust and disillusionment among former supporters is everywhere palpable.

UN Leaders Warn Rule of Law Being Replaced by ‘Rule of Force’

“We are living in a world where mass suffering is excused away… where humans are used as bargaining chips… where international law is treated as a mere inconvenience,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

The secretary-general of the United Nations and the body’s top human rights official did not call out world leaders by name as they warned that “impunity has become a contagion” among powerful governments at the opening of the UN Human Rights Council’s annual session in Geneva on Monday.

But their comments appeared to allude to numerous recent actions by the Trump administration, whose officials have explicitly dismissed concerns about international law regarding the White House’s foreign policy in recent months.

Secretary-General António Guterres warned global officials that “the rule of law is being out-muscled by the rule of force.”

“This assault is not coming from the shadows. Or by surprise. It is happening in plain sight—and often led by those who hold the greatest power,” said Guterres.

The leader’s comments came nearly two months after President Donald Trump ordered an invasion of Venezuela, killing dozens of people, abducting President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and charging them with narcotics trafficking, and pushing to take control of the South American country’s oil supply.

That operation as well as the United States’ bombings of dozens of boats in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean in recent months—also ostensibly to fight “narcoterrorism”—have been violations of international law, according to numerous legal experts, with the former violating the prohibition on the use of force in Article 2(4) of the UN Charter.

Trump officials, including Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, however, have claimed the US has the right to use military force against any country if doing so advances US interests.

“We are living in a world where mass suffering is excused away… where humans are used as bargaining chips… where international law is treated as a mere inconvenience,” said Guterres on Monday. “Conflicts are multiplying and impunity has become a contagion. That is not due to a lack of knowledge, tools, or institutions. It is the result of political choices.”

The UN has directly condemned other policies by the Trump administration in recent weeks, including Trump’s executive order threatening tariffs on any country that provides Cuba with oil as it baselessly accused the island nation’s communist government of harboring terrorists, and Guterres has suggested Trump’s creation of a “Board of Peace” to govern Gaza is akin to “one power calling the shots.”

Guterres mentioned just two specific conflicts: Russia’s war on Ukraine and the “blatant violations of human rights, human dignity, and international law in the occupied Palestinian territory,” where the US-backed Israel Defense Forces have been waging war on Gaza and Israeli settlers have been carrying out increased violent attacks in the West Bank as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government pushes to further illegally annex the territory and make the creation of a Palestinian state impossible.

“The current trajectory is stark, clear, and purposeful: The two-state solution is being stripped away in broad daylight,” said Guterres. “The international community cannot allow this to happen.”

Regarding Ukraine, which will enter its fifth year of war with Russia on Tuesday and where more than 15,000 civilians have been killed, Guterres said, “It is more than past time to end the bloodshed.”

Volker Türk, the UN high commissioner for human rights, added in his own remarks that “domination and supremacy are making a comeback.”

“A fierce competition for power, control, and resources is playing out on the world stage at a rate and intensity unseen for the past 80 years,” said Türk. “The use of force to resolve disputes between and within countries is becoming normalized.”

Türk highlighted how “the gears of global power are shifting”, calling for people to band together to protect rights and create “a strong counterbalance to the top-down, autocratic trends we see today”.

Some world leaders, he said, are operating as though “they are above the law, and above the UN Charter.”

“They claim exceptional status, exceptional danger, or exceptional moral judgement to pursue their own agenda at any cost,” he said. “They spread disinformation to distract, silence, and marginalize.”

Türk also warned that some leaders appear to “weaponize their economic leverage”—an apparent reference to Trump’s decision to drastically cut foreign aid funding and withdraw from dozens of UN organizations last month, putting the international body at risk of “imminent financial collapse,” as Guterres said at the time.

“Humanitarian needs are exploding while funding collapses,” said Guterres on Monday. “Inequalities are widening at staggering speed. Countries are drowning in debt and despair. Climate chaos is accelerating… Across every front, those who are already vulnerable are being pushed further to the margins. And human rights defenders are among the first to be silenced when they try to warn us.”

“In this coordinated offensive, human rights are the first casualty,” he added, urging world leaders to “not let power write a new rulebook in which the vulnerable have no rights and the powerful have no limits.”

“Let this be the place that helps end the broad and brutal assault on human rights,” said Guterres. “Because a world that protects human rights protects itself.”
