Green party in England and Wales has had near-50% rise in membership since Zack Polanski took over last month

The Greens in England and Wales have more than 100,000 members for the first time, the party has announced, a near-50% rise since Zack Polanski took over as leader last month.

It puts them on a potential course to overtake the Conservatives and comes little more than a week after the Greens announced they had moved past the Liberal Democrats in membership numbers, getting to 83,500.

If the same momentum continues, party officials say, they could be on course to become bigger than the Conservatives. Tory party membership figures are not made public, but recent reports say the total is slightly above 120,000.

The Greens’ surge has caused worries among some senior Labour figures, who believe it could take votes and seats from the party in next May’s local elections in England, particularly in some London boroughs.

Polanski has repeatedly set out what he sees as the Greens’ ambition to supplant Labour. In a speech this month to the party’s annual conference, he said that without action Keir Starmer would “hand this country on a plate” to Reform UK.

The Green Party has voted to make party policy a motion that seeks to “abolish landlords”.

Carla Denyer, Green MP for Bristol Central, sought to stress that despite the motions “eye-catching” title, “it does not actually ‘abolish’ landlords”.

“It does, however, address the housing crisis, empowers tenants and improves their wellbeing. It contains a range of policies which, over time, would reduce the proportion of the housing market that is privately rented, and increase the proportion of socially rented homes.

“The policies, many of which were contained in our 2024 manifesto, include the introduction of rent controls and giving councils powers to buy properties when landlords sell,” she said.

Denyer added: “The motion also calls for the mass building of council homes, which was another manifesto commitment, and adds a proposal for a state-owned housing manufacturer to support these efforts and innovate on housing design and manufacture.”

Speaking at the 2025 Green Party Conference, Zack Polanski has called on the government to reverse the proscription of Palestine Action:

Amnesty UK described Palestine Action’s terrorist proscription as “disturbing” and an ‘unprecedented legal overreach’. Following the move, there have been months of protests opposing the Home Office’s decision.

Zack Polanski’s ‘socialism’ response is really resonating with people

Since being elected to the Green Party leadership, Zack Polanski has impressed people who want a left-wing alternative to Labour. Most recently, his response to a supposed “jibe” has gone down particularly well:

‘Socialist’ party

Polanski has been making an effort to speak to anyone who’ll speak to him (including the Canary).

Recently, Polanski appeared on Pod Save the UK with hosts Nish Kumar and Coco Khan. In the clip in question, Khan notes that Zarah Sultana said she’s in a ‘socialist party’ when asked what the difference between Your Party and the Green Party is. As Sultana and Polanski clearly get along well, we’re sure she wasn’t gunning for the man, and Polanski didn’t come out fighting. Offering a thoughtful response, he said:

Do we shout that we’re a socialist party regularly? No, because I think most people don’t know what that means, and you switch people off. So instead, I talk about lowering bills, about the public ownership of public services, and taxes on multimillionaires and billionaires. These are all socialist policies, and they’re all embedded and deep within the Green Party.

The Green Party of England and Wales has announced it has surged past 80,000 members on the first day of the Labour Party conference – a record high for the party. The announcement was made by Green Party Leader, Zack Polanski, speaking at a campaign event in North London.

The new membership record marks a near 20% increase in membership since Polanski was elected leader less than a month ago.  Green Party leader Zack Polanski said

“This is a huge milestone for the Green Party of England and Wales. The tired, old two-party system is over.  More and more people are looking to a politics rooted in tackling the climate crisis and inequality. The Green Party is the party that wants to bring water into public hands, wants to lower bills, and wants to protect our National Health Service.  Our party conference is just a week away. Our membership growth is a fantastic foundation from which to deepen our roots in local communities and build a bolder politics.  This is just the beginning, and we have no time to waste.”

Zack Polanski said before the Labour Party conference opening, “When I said we intend to replace Labour, I meant it.  As another Labour conference comes round, it’s another emergency government reset.  It just confirms what we already know: Labour has failed. By his own standards, Starmer has broken the promises he was elected on, ditched the principles he claimed to stand for, and his government has made inequality worse, ignored the climate crisis and contributed to arming a genocidal Israeli government. And for all the talk, this conference isn’t a vision for the future. It’s a desperate attempt to rewrite the past.”

“People are crying out for bold leadership, not cautious tinkering.  This will probably be Starmer’s last conference.  Labour’s future candidates aren’t offering any of the solutions we need.  The Green Party is offering these solutions. A wealth tax on the super-rich, investment in public services and action to protect our climate. We are ready to turn this country around by offering a bold, positive alternative to a crumbling Labour government.”
