“Israel’s military attorney general just gave his soldiers license to rape—so long as the victim is Palestinian,” said one Israeli rights group.

The Israel Defense Forces on Thursday dismissed the indictments of five soldiers accused of raping a Palestinian prisoner at the notorious Sde Teiman prison in July 2024—an attack that sparked worldwide outrage.

The IDF spokesperson’s office said the decision to drop the indictments of five reserve members of Force 100—a special unit of the military police responsible for guarding and controlling high-risk detainees—“was made following an examination of all the considerations, evidence, and relevant circumstances.”

“Among the factors taken into account were the complexity of the evidentiary basis in the case and the implications of the release of the security detainee to the Gaza Strip, which created significant consequences for the evidentiary aspect of the case,” the office added. “These developments created exceptional circumstances that affect the ability to continue the criminal proceedings while preserving the right of the defendants to a fair trial.”

The dismissal of the indictments, according to The Jerusalem Post, does not mean the soldiers have been exonerated.

The five soldiers were caught on video assaulting a Palestinian prisoner at Sde Teiman on July 5, 2024. Although they used riot shields in a bid to conceal the nearly 15-minute attack, medical reports cited in the case show the victim suffered serious rectal injuries requiring surgery, a ruptured bowel, punctured lung, and fractured ribs. An Israeli medical staffer said that the victim arrived at the hospital in critical condition.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—who is wanted by the International Criminal Court in The Hague for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza—welcomed the dismissal of the indictments, which he said had “damaged Israel’s reputation in the world in an unprecedented manner.”

Israeli President Israel Katz raised eyebrows by asserting that “the role of the IDF’s legal system is to protect and safeguard IDF soldiers who engage heroically in war against cruel monsters, and not the rights of the terrorists of Hamas.”

Netanyahu and Katz both called the prosecution of the Sde Teiman reservists a “blood libel.”

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich similarly welcomed the dismissals, declaring that “now all that’s left is to ensure that the ousted military advocate general stands trial.”

Smotrich was referring to Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, who admitted last year to authorizing the leak of the Sde Teiman assault video in order to “confront the false propaganda against the law enforcement officials in the military” by those who denied the allegations against the soldiers.

Human rights groups and others condemned the decision to kill the case, with the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI) posting on social media that “Israel’s military attorney general granted his soldiers a rape license—as long as the victim was Palestinian.”

PCATI said that dismissing the indictments “adds to a long series of decisions and actions taken by the army… which cover up the violent violations that have occurred in Israeli prisons and detention facilities Increasingly since October 7, 2023.”

Contrasting the failure to hold the reservists accountable with the draconian prison sentences given to Palestinians who resist Israel’s illegal occupation, US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) said on Bluesky: “Just so that we are clear, Israel drops criminal charges on five Israeli soldiers who were caught on camera sexually assaulting a Palestinian detainee. But Israel will keep kids in prison for decades because they were throwing rocks? Make it make sense.”

Canadian journalist Justin Ling said that “the abuse inflicted on Palestinian detainees at Sde Teiman prison—including the murder of a Palestinian doctor—was inhumane.”

“This one case, brought because the abuse was *caught on camera*, was a small sign that rule of law in Israel still worked,” he added. “The Israeli government has dropped the case.”

Israeli-American academic Shaiel Ben-Ephraim also noted the strength of the case, including the video footage of the assault.

“They had witness testimony,” he added. “It was a slam-dunk case. Guards I talked to in Sde Teiman said this case was just the tip of the iceberg. And now they are dropping the charges. Of course.”

Former Palestinian prisoners, IDF soldiers, and Israeli medical professionals have all said they witnessed torture and other abuse of detainees at Sde Teiman and other facilities. Victims ranged in age from children to the elderly.

According to an analysis by Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham, at least 98 Palestinians have died in Israeli prisons and military detention centers during the war. Many bodies of former Palestinian prisoners returned by Israel have shown signs of torture, execution, and mutilation.

The IDF has announced investigations into the deaths of dozens of Palestinian prisoners in its custody during the genocidal war on Gaza launched after the Hamas-led attack of October 7, 2023.

Nine Israeli soldiers were initially arrested in connection with the recorded Sde Teiman assault. Five of them were indicted in February 2025.

While many Israelis condemned the alleged rape of the Sde Teiman prisoner, others rallied around the accused soldiers—especially on the far right. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir hailed the reservists as “our best heroes.” Smotrich called them “heroic warriors.”

Smotrich and others demanded an investigation into the video showing the attack—not in order to seek justice for the victim, but rather to find out who leaked the damning footage.

The soldiers’ arrests outraged many on the Israeli right. At least one Cabinet member and several members of the Knesset, Israel’s legislative body, joined a mob that in August 2024 stormed two military bases where they believed the arrested suspects were being held.

Other Israelis, including journaist Yehuda Schlesinger, called for legalizing the torture of Palestinian prisoners, because “they deserve it,” and “it’s great revenge.”

Last year, Israel blocked a request from United Nations sex crimes experts to probe alleged sexual violence perpetrated by Hamas fighters during the October 7, 2023 attack, reportedly to avoid attendant scrutiny of rapes and other abuses allegedly committed by Israeli forces against imprisoned Palestinians.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz vowed on Wednesday to continue military offensives in Lebanon, Syria, Gaza and Yemen despite regional and international efforts to de-escalate and restore regional stability, Anadolu reports.

Israel “will continue its operations in Lebanon, Syria, the Gaza Strip and Yemen,” Maariv daily quoted Katz as saying during a training course for Israeli Air Force pilots, attended by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir.

“In Lebanon, we will continue to apply maximum force against Hezbollah; in Syria, Israel will not withdraw from Mount Hermon (Jabal al-Sheikh) and the security zone; and in the Gaza Strip, Israel remains committed to dismantling Hamas and disarming the territory,” he added.

“As for Yemen, Israel will continue its operations to prevent the Houthis from strengthening their capabilities,” he said.

Addressing its conflict with Tehran, Katz claimed that Israel had inflicted “significant damage on Iran’s nuclear and strategic capabilities.”

“I am following reports regarding Iran, which we struck strongly in cooperation with our American partners, and the security establishment is closely monitoring developments. Naturally, I cannot provide further details,” he added.

The Israeli army has launched a brutal offensive in Gaza, killing more than 71,000 people, mostly women and children, and injuring over 171,000 others since October 2023. The assault fueled regional tensions and sparked an exchange of attacks with Hezbollah in Lebanon and Yemen’s Houthis. The Israeli army also launched a 12-day war on Iran in June, which was halted under a US-sponsored ceasefire.

Tel Aviv also staged repeated cross-border raids into Syrian territory and launched airstrikes, killing civilians and destroying Syrian military sites, vehicles, weapons, and ammunition.

Israeli defense minister vows no full withdrawal from Gaza, occupied Syrian territories

Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz on Tuesday vowed that Tel Aviv will never fully withdraw from the Gaza Strip or occupied Syrian territories, the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported, Anadolu reports.

“We are located deep inside Gaza and we will never leave all of Gaza,” Katz told a press conference in the Beit El settlement near Ramallah in the central West Bank

He also pledged to establish new military bases in northern Gaza, instead of the settlements that were evacuated after the Israeli withdrawal in 2005.

“When the time comes, in northern Gaza … we will build Nahal units instead of the (Israeli) communities that were displaced,” he said, praising the incumbent Israeli cabinet as a “settlement” government.

Nahal sites are a military program in which groups of young Israelis volunteer together and later form civilian communities, according to the Israeli daily Haaretz.

According to the Times of Israel portal, Katz’s remarks about building settlements in northern Gaza pose a challenge to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Washington. The premier is expected to visit the US later this month for talks with US President Donald Trump.

Although the Israeli government has not issued clarification regarding Katz’s statements, settler leaders and opponents viewed it as a call for settlement building.

Katz’s office, however, clarified in a statement that the government does not intend to establish any settlements in the Gaza Strip.

It claimed that the defense minister’s reference to setting up Nahal outposts in northern Gaza “were made solely in a security context.”

Around 750,000 illegal Israeli settlers live in hundreds of settlements across the West Bank, including 250,000 in East Jerusalem. Illegal settlers carry out daily attacks against Palestinians with the aim of forcibly displacing them.

Regarding Israeli violations of Syrian sovereignty, Katz said: “We will not move an inch from Syria,” without providing further details.

Syrian government data shows that since December 2024, Israel has carried out over 1,000 airstrikes on Syria and more than 400 cross-border raids into the southern provinces.

After the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in late 2024, Israel expanded its occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights by seizing the demilitarized buffer zone, a move that violated a 1974 agreement with Syria.

Israeli defence minister says he intends to close public radio station

Israel’s defence minister said on Wednesday he planned to close publicly funded Army Radio in what he described as an attempt to preserve the military’s nonpartisan character, but the decision was denounced by the station’s chief as a blow to press freedom.

The minister, Israel Katz, said in a statement he would soon submit a proposal to the country’s right-wing government to close the station, which is editorially independent, and he expected it to end its broadcasts by 1 March.

Army Radio’s chief, Tal Lev Ram, said the move was unexpected and not a professional process that prioritised the interests of soldiers.

“We see this as a real, regrettable, and dramatic blow to the people’s army, to Israeli society, and to freedom of the press in a democratic state,” he said in a statement.

“I intend to fight this grave decision by every means,” he said.

Army Radio is among two state-funded news outlets in Israel, the other being the public broadcaster KAN which operates a television news channel and several radio news stations.

Both are editorially independent of the government.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has been critical of Army Radio and KAN, sometimes accusing them of being biased against state institutions.

Katz said Army Radio had aired many opinions attacking the military and soldiers. The station is staffed by both soldiers and civilians and is widely popular among the Israeli public. A communications ministry spokesperson declined to comment.

The government has sought to privatise KAN, a move that some critics say is because KAN is critical of the government.

Israeli Opposition Leader Yair Lapid on X condemned the decision to close Army Radio, saying it was driven by “an anxious government that fears criticism”. He accused the government of trying to “change the rules of the game” ahead of next year’s election.

Israel’s journalist union said that it would fight to overturn Katz’s “harmful” decision.

It was not immediately clear when Katz would submit the proposal to the entire government.

Public opinion polls frequently show that Netanyahu’s coalition, the most right-wing in Israel’s history, would not win enough seats to form a government if an election were held today.

Israeli defence minister declares closed military zone along Egypt border

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz declared the border area with Egypt a closed military zone, citing security concerns, local media reported on Thursday, Anadolu reports.

“We are declaring war. Anyone who enters the restricted area will be harmed,” Katz said during a discussion late Wednesday, as cited by the public broadcaster KAN.

Army Radio said the defence minister agreed with the Shin Bet Chief, David Zinni, to classify alleged attempts to smuggle weapons through the border with Egypt as a “terrorist threat” to help the security services “to use appropriate tools to combat it.”

According to Yedioth Ahronoth, the defence minister ordered “to hit any unauthorised entity that infiltrates the forbidden area.”

The daily claimed that the decision came after what it called “massive weapons smuggling operations” along the border.

There was no immediate comment from Egyptian authorities on the Israeli claims.

In recent months, the Israeli army has repeatedly claimed to have thwarted weapon smuggling attempts via drones, without specifying the parties behind these alleged operations.

The Israeli army has killed nearly 69,000 Palestinians and injured over 170,000 others in a brutal offensive in the Gaza Strip since October 2023. The assault came to a halt under a ceasefire agreement that took effect on Oct. 10.
