Palestine solidarity groups in Romania and beyond are launching a campaign to end ties with Israeli arms company Elbit Systems.

A coalition of Romanian and international groups standing in solidarity with Palestine has launched the “Elbit Out!” campaign, aiming to expel Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems from Romania. Elbit is one of Israel’s largest arms manufacturers and is present in Romania with three companies, the organizers explain. “There, it manufactures components for weapons that have been tested on Palestinians and are partly still used in Gaza today.”

According to statements of Israeli officials, Elbit facilities in Brașov and Bacău, along with a production site in Măgurele outside Bucharest, made Romania the company’s third-largest manufacturing hub in 2021 – behind only Israel and the United States. The arms producer’s presence has been a constant for years, with early 2010s reports already highlighting its peculiar position in Romania.

“The continuation of these cooperative relations between Romania and the Israeli state violates Romania’s international legal obligations and the fundamental principles of human rights,” campaigners warn. “Through the arms trade, Romania is an active partner in genocide, in maintaining the apartheid regime, and in the systematic oppression of the Palestinian civilian population.”

While the campaign is demanding Romanian authorities end ties with Elbit, it also stresses that complicity in Israel’s war crimes extends further. One issue is the scale of military exports from Romania to Israel. Activists point out that in the past two years alone, these have amounted to dozens of millions of euros. Such transfers have been another steady feature of the bilateral relationship. In 2012, Israel was Romania’s third-largest arms client. “While other export destinations decreased in volume, as all European arms export decreased due to the economic crisis, Israel continued to be a good customer of the Romanian arms industry,” Wendela de Vries from the Dutch campaign Stop Arms Trade noted in LeftEast in 2014. “It continued buying components for air-to-air missiles, military ground vehicles, and testing equipment for military planes.”

At the same time, Romania has consistently purchased Israeli military technology, much of it tested on Palestinians living under occupation. This cooperation has included technology exchange for drones and air defense systems, involving not only Elbit but also Israel Aerospace Industries and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. Most recently, over €2 billion was awarded to Rafael in a contract for an air defense system to be deployed in Romania. The deal will draw funding from Romania’s strained public budget, but is also likely to benefit from the European Union’s recent armament programs, according to early reports.

As a result of this background, the campaign will also focus on halting all military imports and exports between Romania and Israel, as well as terminating bilateral military agreements. After a public inauguration on October 5, with the participation of representatives from BDS Campaign Europe and Law for Palestine, it will include field work with trade unions, legal petitions, and engaged advocacy. It is expected to culminate with a conference focusing on solidarity with Palestine and internationalism, organized as a counterpoint to the Black Sea Defense, Aerospace and Security International Exhibition in Bucharest in mid-May 2026.

The initiative is coordinated by Palestine Solidarity Cluj-Napoca in cooperation with Solidaritate România-Palestina, Moldova pentru Palestina, Absorbante pentru Toate, Blocul Tineretului Muncitoresc, Căși Sociale ACUM!, Colectiva Urzica, Fundraisers for Falastin RO, Grupul de Acțiune Socialistă, Partidul SENSand Platforma L.E.F.T. It has also secured endorsements from the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) Campaign, Stop ReArm Europe, and the International People’s Assembly (IPA), showing that the push to end European complicity in Israel’s crimes is growing stronger by the day.

Keir Starmer objects to criticism of the IDF. He asks how could anyone object to them starving people to death, forced marches like the Nazis did, bombing Gaza's hospitals and universities, mass-murdering journalists, healthworkers and starving people queuing for food, killing and raping prisoners and murdering children. He calls for people to stop obstructing his genocide for Israel.

Israel has repeatedly denied this and called a recent UN commission of inquiry report “distorted and false”.

Labour Party members have voted to accept that a genocide is taking place in Gaza by Israel – putting pressure on the government to also do so.

Members voted to approve an emergency motion at Labour’s conference to accept the findings of the UN commission of inquiry, which nearly two weeks ago concluded Israel “has committed genocide”.

Israel has repeatedly denied this and called the report “distorted and false”.

The vote will place further pressure on the government after Sir Keir Starmer and his ministers have refused to declare a genocide is taking place.

dizzy: Keir Starmer’s UK government has actively participated in and been extremely supportive of Israel’s Gaza genocide.

Attempts to delegitimise: Netanyahu at the UN General Assembly

by Dr Binoy Kampmark

It takes a lot to make UN delegates walk out from an address to the General Assembly.  But this was precisely what Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, managed to achieve in his September 26 speech.  His address began by attempting to show his country as a guardian of law and civilisation, fighting a lonely, unsupported war against fiendish barbarians.  “Last year I stood at this podium and I showed this map.  It shows the curse of Iran’s terror axis.”  Such an axis threatened “the peace of the entire world.  It threatened the stability of our region and the very existence of my country, Israel.  They were meant also to threaten the United States and blackmail nations everywhere.”

The speech then moved into a triumphant register.  Hezbollah had been cowed.  The Houthis had been “hammered”.  The “bulk of Hamas’s terror machine” had been “crushed”.  The armaments of Bashir al-Assad had been destroyed, Iran’s Shiite militias in Iraq deterred.  “And most importantly, and above everything else that I could say to you or that we did in this past year, in this past decade, we devastated Iran’s atomic weapons and ballistic missile programs.”  Israel’s assassination program – the slaying of Iranian nuclear scientists, the killing of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, the slaughter of half of the Houthi leadership – were also points of celebration.  Regarding Hamas, Netanyahu offered the following: “The final remnants of Hamas are holed up in Gaza City.  They vow to repeat the atrocities of 7 October again and again.  That is why Israeli must finish the job.”

Anyone familiar with Netanyahu’s streaky command of Disney cartography or predictive assessments on the military power of other states already knows the strained performance here.  Vital to his argument is delegitimising the cause of Palestinian statehood, treating it as an annex of a foreign power and a foreign movement.  He goes on to link with little effort Iran’s “massive nuclear weapons program and massive ballistic program” to the late Yahya Sinwar’s “dispatched” terrorists of Hamas as they made their way into Israel on 7 October 2023, to Hezbollah’s missiles and rockets in Lebanon, to Syria’s now deposed Assad regime, which “hosted Iran’s forces, tightening the noose of death around our throats.”  For good measure, the Houthis in Yemen were also thrown in.

This shoddy reasoning shares the strain of paranoia US strategists demonstrated with feverish intensity during the Cold War.  There was a stubborn refusal, at least till the Nixon administration, to see Communist insurgencies as the product of indigenous conditions rather than directed movements from Moscow and Peking.  Assistance and aid to North Vietnam, for instance, was misconstrued as command and control.

Similarly, Netanyahu sees radical Islam as a monolithic bloc of obscurantism that has absorbed the Palestinian cause.  Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis all shout “Death to America”.  All had “murdered Americans and Europeans in cold blood.”  Israel’s enemies were enemies of the West.  “They want to drag the modern world back to the past… to a dark age of violence, fanaticism, and terror.”  With demagogic purpose, he also pointed to “the radical Islamist surge” in the societies of Israel’s allies. Thank Israel, he declared, for having the capacity to supply the intelligence of five Central Intelligence Agencies, for doing, to quote German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, “the dirty work for all of us.”

The Israeli PM represents a country whose magistrates and representatives sneer and mock international law, treasuring an exceptionalism that have given it an increasingly roguish character.  He is contemptuous of accusations that the IDF is not minimising harm to civilians, claiming that the ratio of non-combatant to combatant casualties is “less than two to one”, one much “lower than NATO’s wars in Afghanistan and Iraq”.  This is an astonishing view, given that Israel’s own military data, as revealed by The Guardian+972 magazine and Local Call, shows that 83 per cent of those killed in Gaza have been civilians.

Besides, even where civilians were killed, they only did so under coercion from Hamas.  The oft repeated claim was made that the organisation “implants itself in mosques, schools, hospitals, apartment buildings and tries to force these civilians not to leave, to stay in harm’s way”.  This is a convenient spread, justifying the destruction of critical infrastructure and the essential features of a functioning society.  Unfortunately, evidence from the IDF on many of these claims has been skimpy.

The allegations of genocide, firmed up by the findings of an independent UN commission of inquiry, the International Association of Genocide Scholars, and numerous human rights groups including Israel’s own B’Tselem, were also swatted away as blood libels.  Those wishing to commit genocide would never “plead with the civilian population it is supposedly targeting to get out of harm’s way.”  The Nazis were never good enough to tell Jews to “kindly leave”.

READ: Netanyahu promoted 8 major lies in UN speech, Gaza government says

As for the starvation policy, this was yet another lie.  “There’s one ton of aid for every man, woman and child in Gaza” with each person receiving 3,000 calories per day.  “Some starvation policy!”  It takes some gumption to embrace such mendacity and self-imposed delusion, denying the militarisation of the aid model in the Strip, with necessaries drip-fed through a limited number of delivery points defended by private contractors and trigger-happy IDF personnel.

Regarding the latest round of countries recognising Palestinian statehood, Netanyahu could only hector. “Murdering Jews pays off.”  The forces of antisemitism had been rewarded by France, Britain, Australia and Canada, along with other states.  “Your disgraceful decision will encourage terrorism against Jews and against innocent people everywhere.”

On the issue of the two-state solution, the argument was slyly inverted.  Israel did believe in the formula.  It was those nasty, ungrateful Palestinians who never did.  They were “given territory” only to then attack Israel in “totally unprovoked” circumstances.  Absurdly, Netanyahu even called Gaza a proto-Palestinian state, a gift from the Jewish state.  Never mind that it became the world’s largest open-air prison, its residents the convenient lab rats of Israeli surveillance, technology and military experimentation.

As long as Palestinians exist in Gaza and the West Bank, they are unsettling reminders of the colonial project, the thefts, the dispossessions, the habitual violence.  As long as they have political representatives of any stripe, or any voice uttered through any form – literature, media, the podium, and even the gun – they are exercising the very same rights to self-determination that saw the creation of Israel.  It is those rights that Netanyahu showed such withering contempt for in this indignant address.

Traitor Tony Blair receives the Congressional Gold Medal of Honour from George ‘Dubya’ Bush for being a good boy

Yesterday saw two announcements. Starmer is to introduce compulsory digital ID cards in the UK, and Tony Blair is put forward by the White House to be the colonial administrator of Gaza for five years.

The political economy of the world appears locked in a vertiginous downward spiral. You don’t have to scratch very hard to find that Tony Blair’s hand is also behind the compulsory ID plan. He has been pushing it for nearly thirty years, and now it comes with added links to Larry Ellison, Palantir and Israel.

The government will be able to garner and centralise knowledge of everything about you. Every detail of your financial transactions, your DNA, your family, your medical records, your education, employment and accommodation. It will be a very short time before the digital ID is linked to your social media accounts and your IP access to monitor your browsing.

There is already the intention to control us through our access to financial services. I have spoken with one of the women charged for protesting outside the Leonardo factory in Edinburgh. She has had her bank accounts cancelled – simply losing the money in them – and cannot open a new account. You may recall they tried to debank Nigel Farage. The campaign to defend Julian Assange suffered multiple banking cancellations.

The desire of the state to control people politically through their ability to carry out ordinary transactions is not in doubt. It is demonstrated. Once you have a compulsory digital ID linked to transactions – which will follow very swiftly, I am quite certain – they will be able to simply switch off your ability to pay for anything. Add this to a digital currency which tracks all of your expenditure – all the key elements of which are already installed – and total control will be in place.

Starmer is trying to dress up a digital ID as an immigration control – whether you support immigration control or not, the notion that it will make a significant difference is nonsense. Landlords, employers, banks and lawyers already have to check the ID and status of their clients. For those bent on evasion, one more piece of bureaucracy will make little difference. It is the law-abiding who will be enmeshed in the system of control.

Increases in state surveillance and restrictions on personal freedom are always falsely framed as protection against a terrible threat – paedophiles or fraudsters or immigrants or Russians. Yet despite an ever-shrinking area of personal freedom, none of these real or invented threats ever actually recedes.

Starmer is the most unpopular PM in history. Attempting to force through this deeply unpopular measure is going to cause him real difficulties in parliament. The calculation is that Reform will oppose the measure on libertarian grounds, and that this will allow Starmer to show himself as tougher on immigration than Reform. The breathtaking cynicism of this is typical of the Starmer government, which believes in nothing except their own power.

As for Blair being made effectively Governor of Gaza, this is so sickening as to be beyond belief. The man who killed a million Iraqis on the basis of lies about WMD, who has made hundreds of millions of pounds through PR services to dictators, whose Tony Blair Institute has drawn up “Gaza Riviera” plans for Trump, and who has been discussing with western oil companies the takeover of Gaza’s gas field, is touted to administer the mass grave which Gaza has become.

In any reasonable world this would be impossible. The degeneration of western society is profound. There are no ethics in play beyond the dominance of power, wealth and greed. Blair manages to embody these in one person.

Bolivian president accuses US and Israel of ‘practicing genocide’

Bolivian President Luis Arce addressed the UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday, launching a harsh critique of the US. He accused Washington of causing pain and death globally and said that a “genocide is currently being practiced by the decision of two countries,” referring to Israel and the US, in Gaza, Anadolu reports.

“Today, the echoes of war drums are sounding,” Arce said, specifically targeting Washington. He argued that Donald Trump and other powerful sectors in the US have an “obsessive desire” to cause pain and death around the world.

The Bolivian president asserted that the “threat of death stalks Latin America and the Caribbean.” He said the US Southern Command has mobilized in the region with “war potential,” including missiles, planes, helicopters, and submarines.

According to Arce, the US argues it is in the region to “fight drug trafficking and organized crime,” but claimed that, “if it were true, it would begin to confront both of these issues in its own country.” He said that the deployment is actually a pretext to promote the “militarization of a region” and to carry out an “intervention in Venezuela … which possesses extremely important natural resources, especially oil, which the North intends to control.”

He said the US military operations seek to “attempt to regain control of Latin America and the Caribbean, based on undermining democracy, promoting militarization, and employing other colonialist tactics.”

Arce said that the world continues to bear the consequences of wars, blockades, and unilaterally imposed sanctions, which he believes contradict the UN’s founding principles.

He cited the economic blockade against Cuba as a prime example, referring to the millions in losses caused by the six-decade-long unilateral action by the US government. Arce said the blockade stemmed from “imperialism’s rejection of the region’s first socialist revolution.”

“The threat of death also runs through the Middle East,” Arce said, referring to the violence in the Gaza Strip, with the participation of Israel and the US, “which want to accelerate the displacement of the Palestinian people in the shortest possible time.”
