Israeli math professor charged with plotting to kill hundreds of Arabs, force mass expulsions

Israeli prosecutors charged a Bar-Ilan University mathematics professor Monday with preparing a terrorist attack, blackmail and obstruction of justice for plotting to kill hundreds of Arab citizens and force thousands more to flee to Jordan, Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, according to Israeli media.
The State Prosecutor’s Office said the suspect, whose identity remains under a gag order, developed a “thorough and detailed” plan over nearly three years and sought assistance from “subversive elements” in the Israeli Air Force, artillery and armored corps, The Times of Israel reported.
The suspect, around 60 years old, was arrested Sept. 17 and has admitted to the charges against him, according to prosecutors.
The indictment says he spent the past 18 months trying to recruit people for the plan and sought a “significant political figure” who could help enlist armed participants.
He eventually approached former Likud lawmaker Moshe Feiglin, whose Zehut faction has teamed up with extremist Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s Religious Zionism party ahead of the Oct. 27 election, the newspaper said.
After Feiglin did not respond, the professor tried about a month ago to blackmail him into joining while using methods to conceal the plan and obstruct its discovery, prosecutors said.
Feiglin, his deputy Yitzhak Hai Zaga and Zehut executive director Shai Malka later handed police threatening letters they received from the suspect, according to a court filing.
The professor called the plan “Ayit,” Hebrew for “eagle,” also used as an acronym for a phrase meaning “the nation will carry out transfer,” referring to the expulsion of Palestinians.
He began working on the plan in February 2023 following the 2021 protests in mixed Arab-Jewish cities, the newspaper said.

Mass killings plot
As part of the preparations, the Israeli professor obtained numerous aerial photographs of the northern Bedouin town of Tuba-Zangariyye in northern Israel in March 2023 and visited the area several times to identify what he considered suitable access and attack routes.
He also prepared a 20-page document for recruits, which he kept at both his home and his Bar-Ilan University office.
The plan called for 72 armed Jewish attackers, divided into 12 groups of six, to simultaneously attack Arab population centers with firearms and axes, with support from sympathetic elements in the military.
It estimated that 600 to 700 people would be killed and stipulated that at least half of the attackers, including the professor, should hold gun licenses.
The document also called for women and children to be targeted and for the attacks to be broadcast on social media in real time to drive Arabs to flee Israel and the occupied West Bank.
It envisioned appeals for soldiers, police officers, Israeli occupiers, and criminals to join the attacks after they began.
The professor planned to gather 71 other participants at an event organized by a candidate in the 2026 election under the guise of a campaign gathering, with the attacks scheduled for the following day, the indictment said.
Around June, he asked his daughter to recruit acquaintances among the so-called “hilltop youth,” a term referring to extremist Israeli occupiers in the West Bank, but she refused.
The Central District Attorney’s Office filed the indictment at Lod District Court and asked that he remain in custody until the end of the proceedings.
Bar-Ilan University said it was “shocked” by the charges and suspended the professor pending the conclusion of the legal process.
Arab Israelis make up about 21% of Israel’s population of more than 10 million.

US, Israeli strikes hit parts of Iran’s state television headquarters in Tehran

Iran reported US-Israeli airstrikes on parts of the state television headquarters in the capital Tehran on Sunday evening, Anadolu reports.
The state-run Press TV said US and Israeli warplanes hit parts of the headquarters of Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) in Tehran.
Attacks also targeted residential districts in the capital, the broadcaster added.
Meanwhile, the state news agency IRNA reported that explosions were heard in the eastern, southeastern and central areas of Tehran.

No information was yet available about casualties.
The US and Israel launched an attack on Iran on Saturday, killing several top Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran retaliated with a series of drone and missile attacks that targeted Israel, US assets and several Gulf countries.
This came after an earlier wave of attacks by Tel Aviv and Washington in June last year, triggering a 12-day war before a ceasefire was announced.

‘An Avoidable Disaster’: Israeli Blockade of Gaza Could Starve Hundreds of Premature Babies

The Associated Press reported Wednesday that 580 premature infants are at risk of death due to “depleted” reserves of baby formula.
The Associated Press reported Wednesday that 580 premature infants are at risk of death, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, due to a shortage of medical-grade formula entering the strip.
Despite a recent policy change by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to allow “minimal aid” into the strip following a total blockade of food, water, shelter, and medication, it has proven far too little to keep hospitals running and keep people fed. It has proven especially deadly for children.
The AP report quotes Dr. Ahmed al-Farah, head of the pediatrics and obstetrics department at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, one of the few functional medical facilities left in Gaza.
Last week, al-Farah warned that the hospital’s stock of milk was “completely depleted,” and that unless aid was delivered immediately, the babies would face “an avoidable disaster.” The widely publicized call was answered with the shipment of 20 boxes of formula from the U.S. aid group Rahma Worldwide.
Al-Farah said this was enough to meet the needs of 10 babies for two weeks, but warned that in the long run it would be far too little, especially with no guarantee of aid in the future.
“This is not enough at all,” he told the AP. “It solved the problem temporarily, but what we need is a permeant solution: Lift the siege.”
Many other hospitals reported shortages of formula that had not been answered, such as Al-Rantisi Hospital in Gaza City, which was completely out of stock.
Fortified milk has become increasingly necessary in Gaza due to the increasing number of premature births. In May, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reported that as a result of widespread hunger, 1 in 5 children is now born pre-term or underweight. That malnutrition has also left many new mothers unable to breastfeed.
Dr. Asaad Nawajha, a pediatric specialist at Nasser Hospital, told Middle East Eye that the blockade has proven catastrophic for the health of both children and their mothers.
“This all goes back to the [harsh] conditions mothers endure amid this vicious war on the Gaza Strip,” Nawajha said. “Due to the lack of nutritious items entering the Gaza Strip, both mothers and children have been exposed to illnesses resulting from malnutrition.”
The Israeli government’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) has insisted that the amount of aid allowed into Gaza is sufficient to provide for the population.
On June 22, COGAT announced that 430 aid trucks had been allowed to enter the strip during the preceding week. However, this is but a fraction of the more than 600 trucks per day that the United Nations is necessary to meet their needs.
Many people who have come to aid sites administered by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), to obtain the meager supplies available, have been met with deadly violence from the Israeli military.
Since May 27, at least 549 Palestinians have been killed and more than 4,000 injured by Israeli forces at these sites, according to the U.N. Office for Coordinated Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the Gaza Ministry of Health. The Gaza Media Office reports at least 19 fatal incidents at these GHF sites over the span of just one month.
Many of the victims have been children. According to a study released Thursday by the humanitarian group Save the Children, children have been killed at 10 of those 19 incidents.
“No child should be killed searching for food,” said Ahmad Alhendawi, Save the Children’s regional director for the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe. “This is not a humanitarian operation—it’s a death trap.”

PALESTINIAN medical officials say Israeli air strikes today killed at least 28 people in the Gaza Strip, including seven children.
This came hours after the United Nations general assembly overwhelmingly approved a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
The latest Israeli killing spree took place in the built-up Nuseirat refugee camp, according to the al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the nearby city of Deir al-Balah.
Two other strikes killed 15 men, part of local committees set up by displaced Palestinians to secure aid convoys.
The Nasser Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis received the bodies.
The hospital said eight were killed in a strike near the southern border town of Rafah and seven others in a strike 30 minutes later near Khan Younis.
Meanwhile the UN general assembly overwhelmingly approved resolutions on Wednesday demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and backing the UN agency for Palestinian refugees that Israel has moved to ban.
