“He is choosing to desecrate the meaning of international law to avoid upsetting Donald Trump.”

Independent British Member of Parliament Jeremy Corbyn on Tuesday accused United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer of “cowardice” for refusing to condemn the US bombing of Venezuela and abduction of its president, acts that experts agree were flagrant violations of international law.

Hours after the US attack—as leaders in the region and worldwide voiced horror and outrage—Starmer issued a statement welcoming Nicolás Maduro’s ouster, declaring that “we regarded Maduro as an illegitimate president and we shed no tears about the end of his regime.”

Starmer later insisted, as the Trump administration laid out plans to control the Venezuelan government indefinitely, that the situation was “complicated,” adding that it was “for the U.S. to justify the action that it has taken.”

Corbyn, the former leader of the Labour Party now helmed by Starmer, countered in Tribune magazine that “it’s really not that complicated: Bombing a sovereign nation and abducting its head of state is illegal.”

“It is absolutely staggering that a prime minister with a background in law cannot bring himself to say something so obvious,” Corbyn wrote. “It’s not that he doesn’t understand. He understands full well. That is the true abomination: He is choosing to desecrate the meaning of international law to avoid upsetting Donald Trump. This is the true meaning of the so-called ‘special relationship’ that government ministers are so desperate to protect: one where the United States tells us to jump, and we ask how high.”

“Twenty-three years later, another Labour prime minister is doing his best to cement the UK’s status as a vassal of the United States.”

The UK, according to the government’s foreign secretary, has been in close contact with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the role it can play in Venezuela, citing the “work we have done over many years to build up relationships and dialogue with Venezuelan opposition parties and with the current authorities in the regime and of course our relationship with the US.”

Corbyn argued that the government’s approach is in some ways reminiscent of its conduct in the lead-up to the disastrous and illegal US invasion of Iraq more than two decades ago.

“Twenty-three years later, another Labour prime minister is doing his best to cement the UK’s status as a vassal of the United States,” Corbyn wrote. “Unlike Iraq, the UK says it is not involved in the bombing of Venezuela. Like Iraq, however, the UK is proving once again that it has no interest in standing up for international law.”

Keir Starmer objects to criticism of the IDF. He calls for people to stop obstructing his genocide for Israel.

Police cordon off an area at Bondi Beach after a reported shooting in Sydney, December 14, 2025

GUNMEN attacked a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, today [yesterday], killing at least 12 people in an “evil, anti-semitic, terrorist attack.”

The shooting began at about 6.47pm local time at the Archer Park area of the beach, where hundreds had gathered for the “Chanukah by the Sea” event marking the start of the eight-day Jewish festival.

Police said the attackers, armed with what they described as “long guns,” opened fire on the crowd as the beach was packed with families, swimmers and tourists.

At least 29 people were wounded, including two police officers, New South Wales police commissioner Mal Lanyon said.

One gunman was shot dead by police at the scene, while a second was arrested and remained in a critical condition in hospital.

Green Party leader Zack Polanski, Britain’s only Jewish political leader, said that he was “thinking of everyone in Australia and those around the world in the Jewish Community who know this fear and loss.”

“Our community is once again mourning,” he said in a statement on his way to a Chanukah event.

Your Party’s Zarah Sultana and Jeremy Corbyn were among those sending messages of solidarity with the Jewish community online, with Mr Corbyn saying: “In moments like these, we must remember our common humanity, reaffirm our opposition to hatred, and stand up for the rights of everyone to worship in freedom, safety and peace.”

Campaign group Jewish Voice for Liberation shared the Jewish Council of Australia’s message of “horror” at the shooting, adding: “Whatever the extreme level of violence suffered by civilians in Gaza, it is no excuse for the murder of uninvolved civilians thousands of miles away.”

Police remove a campaigner taking part in a Defend Our Juries protest in support of Palestine Action outside the Home Office, London, November 24, 2025

Left MPs Jeremy Corbyn, Zarah Sultana and John McDonnell are doing the right thing in highlighting the case of the young pro-Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike in British jails.

Seven prisoners associated with solidarity actions for Palestine have now been on hunger strike for several weeks. They are being locked up on remand, with their trial likely 18 months away. This is the largest co-ordinated political hunger strike since the H-Blocks in 1981.

This is the grossest travesty of justice. The whole labour movement should be demanding that these young people, who are not charged with any violence against persons, should be freed.

Guilty of nothing under the law, they should be given bail immediately. Their continued detention on remand is an act of state vindictiveness.

Should any of them come to lasting harm, it will be on the account of Justice Secretary David Lammy as well as the Prime Minister. They will not be forgiven.
