Government resilience campaign aims to ensure people can cope in a national disaster, in order to free resources for most vulnerable
UK citizens will be told to stock up on tinned food and take steps to ensure they are prepared for national emergencies as part of a new government campaign to improve the nation’s resilience.
The new campaign from the Cabinet Office will set out ways people can prepare for and potential attacks from hostile states, including stocking up on bottled water, sources told the Guardian.
The aim will be to ensure most households have basic supplies and knowledge about how to cope in a crisis, in order to free up immediate government resources for the most vulnerable.

The Israeli army has killed more than 21,500 children and targeted 1,244 out of 1,275 mosques in Gaza since the start of its military campaign in October 2023, the Government Media Office in the Gaza Strip said in a statement released on Monday.
The office reported that the Israeli occupation army continues to commit “the most heinous crimes against humanity” and violates international humanitarian law and international conventions.
The statement highlighted that Israeli forces are “systematically and intentionally targeting defenseless civilians and their inhabited homes, disregarding all international and UN calls” to halt the aggressions.
“The occupation continues to shed the blood of innocents, specifically children, as the number of child martyrs since the start of the genocidal war has exceeded 21,500, a catastrophic toll reflecting the brutality of this organised crime,” the office stated.
The Gaza Media Office also warned of an ongoing targeting of places of worship across the enclave. Out of 1,275 mosques in Gaza, Israeli forces have targeted 1,244, with 1,077 of them completely destroyed.
The office condemned these actions “in the strongest terms” and held Israel, as well the silent international community, responsible for the continuation of the genocide and the deliberate targeting of civilians, children, and religious sites.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Monday that economic warfare represents the “main battlefield” in confronting the “enemy,” referring to the US, Anadolu reports.
In a statement, the IRGC accused Washington of seeking through a multilayered sanction regime to “spread despair among the people, put pressure on living conditions, and weaken social trust.”
It said all government bodies, including those responsible for the economy, trade, oil, industry, agriculture, banking, and diplomacy, play a decisive role in neutralizing the effects of sanctions.
These institutions also contribute to managing markets, securing essential goods, controlling inflation, and creating employment, it added.
The IRGC declared its readiness for strategic cooperation with President Masoud Pezeshkian’s government, saying coordination between the two represents the key to overcoming multilayered sanctions and strengthening national economic resilience.
It also expressed readiness to cooperate and coordinate with the government in all fields required by the difficult conditions facing Iran.
In addition to its military activities, the IRGC maintains an extensive economic presence in Iran, including investments and banking.
The organization, which plays an influential role in Iran’s domestic and foreign policy, is also active in construction, heavy industry, petrochemicals, automotive manufacturing, banking, insurance, trade, media, food, and telecommunications.
The statements came after US President Donald Trump last week warned of economic consequences for Iranian trade partners as he seeks to isolate Tehran with new economic sanctions.

The Houthi group said Monday that it had carried out three operations targeting a Saudi oil tanker in the Red Sea and Saudi troop concentrations in eastern Yemen, Anadolu reports.
In a statement, the group said it had struck a Saudi oil tanker — the Amzan — with a ballistic missile in the northern Red Sea off the coast of Yanbu in western Saudi Arabia.
A “direct” hit had caused a fire aboard the vessel, the group said, adding that several other ships had left the vicinity in the wake of the attack.
The group also said it had conducted two other operations against Saudi troop concentrations in eastern Yemen using ballistic missiles and drones.
The first, it said, had targeted a large convoy carrying military equipment in the Al-Abr and Al-Wadiah areas of Yemen’s eastern Hadramout province near the Saudi border.
More than ten trucks carrying arms from Saudi territory were damaged or destroyed in the attack, the group claimed.
According to the statement, a separate operation targeted Saudi troop concentrations in Al-Kanais, a desert area near the border between Yemen’s Marib and Al-Jawf governorates.
Dozens of personnel, including commanders and officers, were killed or injured in the attack, while several weapons depots were damaged or destroyed, the group said.
In 2014, the Iran-backed Houthis overran much of the country, including Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.
This was followed by several years of war between the Houthis and Yemeni government forces backed by a Saudi-led coalition.
Since the eruption of the Israel-Gaza conflict in 2023, the Houthis have become increasingly involved in regional hostilities, carrying out missile attacks on Israel and Israel-linked commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
The latest uptick in fighting – coupled with the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States – has revived fears of a return to full-scale conflict in the impoverished Gulf country.

Preliminary data from ship-tracking company Kpler, issued at 02:28 GMT, showed that four ships crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, following 13 on Saturday. The figures may be revised later, as some vessels switch off their transponders while passing through the strait, according to Reuters.
The data compared with 16 vessels that crossed the strait on Friday. Two giant crude oil tankers entered the Gulf empty with their tracking systems switched off, one bound for Iraq and the other for Bahrain.
US officials said on Saturday that 16 million barrels of oil had been transported through the Strait of Hormuz on Friday night, as the number of vessels passing through the waterway increased after US President Donald Trump said the United States had full control of the strait.
The data also showed that eight giant gas carriers crossed the strait over the past three days. Six entered the Gulf empty, while two left the Gulf carrying liquefied petroleum gas from Iran.
