The results of votes in the US, Brazil, Israel and Serbia will have impacts that spread far beyond their borders. Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images

From the US to Brazil, Israel and Serbia, the far right have been delivered a number of mammoth blows

In the wake of the US midterm elections, the sheer size of the electoral opposition to Donald Trump is still sinking in. It will take weeks if not months for a full analysis of the results to emerge but they are already having a global impact, with US tech companies losing $3.2trn in value since the vote on Tuesday.

Remember, though, the political focus barely two weeks ago was not just about the US midterms but how they related to three more elections across three continents, in Serbia, Brazil and Israel. In each case, there was uncertainty over the outcome but a recognition that it could have an impact stretching way beyond its borders.

Two of the elections came on the same day, 25 October, in Serbia and Brazil, and the third was in Israel just two days later. The first two were general elections in which the populations as a whole could cast ballots, but in Israel voting was restricted to seven million Jews and the two million Palestinians residing in Israel, with five million Palestinians living under Israeli control in Gaza and the West Bank excluded.

In Serbia, the Serbian Progressive Party (SBS) had been in power for 14 years and was dominant across much of society, including the media and economy, and with plenty of influence across the legal system. Its increasingly autocratic leader, Aleksandar Vucic, had long allowed persistent favouritism and a high level of corruption coupled with organised crime, and in the past two years a substantial community of student activists had demonstrated repeatedly against the SBS and Vucic, giving rise to an opposition Student List of candidates when it came to the election.

While the students had no clear leader, by the time of the election they were reportedly neck and neck in the polls with the government. When the election came, the Student List romped home, winning 53% of the votes, to the SBS’s 39%.

What comes next is uncertain as the List’s newly elected parliamentarians seek to establish a stable if inexperienced government. Critics fear that a combination of years of corruption coupled with the power of organised crime will ultimately dominate but that is by no means certain; many thousands of students, supported by hundreds of thousands of others, see the future very differently.

As the political environment in Serbia evolves, one thing remains certain, it has seen mass protest transform itself into a potential government. That will be watched uncomfortably by quite a few Western states, not least France, with its continuing country-wide street protests, and the UK, where over 4,000 pro-Palestine supporters have been arrested in recent years.

Mass action also applies to Brazil, where the progressive incumbent, Luiz Ignàcio Lula da Silva, failed to lead at the first round of the election, initially having fought a lacklustre campaign. The favourite to win the run-off was his right-wing opponent Flàvio Bolsonaro, a key Trump ally and the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, now imprisoned for his role in an attempted coup after losing the 2022 election.

The prospect of defeat led to a country-wide campaign of mass rallies by Lula’s supporters, with huge crowds gathering in cities right across the country. That was paralleled by far greater use of social media, an element that had not previously been prominent in Lula’s previous approach to campaigning.

Since the return to democracy in Brazil over 40 years ago, no candidate losing the first stage of a presidential election had reversed the result in stage two, yet Lula’s renewed campaign did just this, turning a two million voting deficit in the first round into a substantial lead in the second three weeks later, having gathered around 10 million extra votes.

Much of the change was due to internal politics, but it is at the global level that the result is of note. During his recent four-year term, Lula had made much of the need to slow the rate of destruction of the rainforest, which makes up one of the most significant global sinks of carbon. If Bolsonaro had won that would have been reversed, which would have been music to the ears of Trump and his supporters, as well as to climate change deniers across the world.

As to Israel, there are two main outcomes. First, Binyamin Netanyahu’s Likud-led coalition lost its majority, but Gadi Eisenkot’s Change bloc also fell short. Second, Palestinian Arabs allowed to vote did so in much greater numbers than usual, with a turnout of just under 80%, largely because of a determination to prevent Netanyahu contriving to cling on to power.

Overall, Arab-led parties won 19 seats in the 120-seat Knesset, including 11 for members of the Joint List alliance – enough to hold the balance of power. Ten days after the election, the Joint List announced it would support Eisenkot as prime minister, following in the footsteps of the other Arab group, Ra’am. Israeli president Isaac Herzog is now thought likely to invite Eisenkot to form a government.

The election itself, though, displayed thoroughly uncomfortable attitudes among Jewish Israelis during the campaign. Politics concentrated substantially on domestic issues, including the demands for accountability over the 7 October Hamas attack, with little attention given to the terrible war waged in Gaza by the Netanyahu-led government and the repeated violence perpetrated by Jewish settlers across the occupied West Bank. It was as if over 80,000 Palestinians killed or missing were best ignored.

Not all Jewish Israelis took this position, but a majority appeared to. This, coupled with Netanyahu’s decades of experience in the Israeli government and his capacity for personal survival, suggested that any sustained political stability based on trust would be difficult to achieve. What remained though, was the transformation among Palestinian Israelis and their determination to vote and put Netanyahu out of office.

The fourth of the elections, the United States mid-sessionals for both houses of congress, was the one that sprung by far the greatest surprise. That the Republicans lost was not unexpected, it was the massive size of the loss that counted.

Given Trump’s past behaviour, if a modest shift in votes had given the Democrats the House but not in the Senate, Trump and his team would have carried on if somewhat tarnished. That was not to be. The extent of the failure was so great that it undermined the entire Trump machine and with it the vast numbers of supportive officials brought on to the Federal payroll in the past two years.

That has three implications. One is at the international level, where Trump will no longer maintain his status and influence. There is a risk of hitting out where he thinks he can, but the extent of the failure in these elections means a minimal risk of Trump trying to cry foul in 2028. Times have changed and it won’t wash.

The second is that the last two years have been hugely profitable for the Trump camp but not just for them. Wealthy elites across the entire country have made millions if not billions and will be singularly unhappy at the great gravy train being derailed. Work will already be underway in the Heritage Foundation, the think tank that authored the Project 2025 blueprint for the second Trump administration, and other right-wing think-tanks to adjust to a different era.

Finally, on some key domestic issues with global implications, Trump’s abject failure is very good news. Of all the disastrous policies of the Trump years, it is climate denial and the curbing of the renewables revolution that have been the most dangerous. Within a day of the election result, though, the financial press was reporting a surge in the value of renewable energy outfits, not just in the US but across the world.

Trump is still in the White House and his supporters will still be in the system, but their power is already ebbing away. Taking a global view, the combination of Lula’s re-election in Brazil and Trump’s failure leading to a re-energised environmental movement give the world a rare day of good news.

“The federal government should not be outsourcing its vision on ‘the future of warfare’ to a panel dominated by individuals that stand to profit from it.”

A coalition of government watchdog organizations sued the US Department of Defense on Monday over a recently announced initiative known as Project Meridian, a Pentagon advisory committee headed by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and Anduril Industries cofounder Palmer Luckey—billionaires whose companies benefit extensively from federal contracts.

The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, alleges that Project Meridian violates the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA), which “requires that any federal advisory committee that includes non-governmental members be created by a charter, have a defined structure and purpose, make its records and meetings open to the public, and be fairly balanced in its membership.”

In his memorandum ordering the creation of Project Meridian, Pentagon Secretary Pete Hegseth set a deadline of January 28, 2027 for the panel to deliver recommendations to the US Defense Department on how to “map the trajectory of future warfare” and help the country “maintain global dominance.”

Project Meridian has held at least two meetings at the Pentagon, which has not disclosed the specific contents of the gatherings or released a list of attendees. Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich is helping Musk and Luckey spearhead the advisory panel, coordinated by the MITRE Corporation—whose board previously included the GOP’s nominee for US Senate in Michigan, Mike Rogers.

“Despite its ongoing operations and imminent final report,” the new lawsuit reads, “defendants have failed to comply with FACA’s procedural and substantive requirements for new federal advisory committees, including FACA transparency requirements that disallow Project Meridian’s closed-door operations.”

“Compounding the problem, Project Meridian’s private-sector membership raises precisely the type of conflict-of-interest concerns that FACA was designed to address,” the lawsuit continues. “Announced members include Elon Musk and Palmer Luckey, both leaders and stakeholders of major defense contractors with substantial financial interests in the outcome of Project Meridian’s recommendations. Other members likewise have direct financial stakes in Project Meridian’s findings or are dedicated to aggressive military action.”

The lawsuit was filed by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), Public Citizen, and the Project on Government Oversight. The groups urged the federal court to “hold unlawful, vacate, and set aside Secretary Hegseth’s September 30 memorandum establishing Project Meridian,” “enjoin defendants from allowing Project Meridian to continue its work until defendants bring it into compliance with FACA,” and bar the Pentagon from “accepting or acting upon any recommendations by Project Meridian while it is acting outside the law.”

Donald Sherman, CREW’s president, said in a statement on Monday that the Pentagon is “legally barred from getting advice in secret, by defense contractors with enormous potential conflicts of interest.”

“But that’s exactly what Project Meridian is doing—soliciting private counsel from contractors about military capacity including the president’s largest political benefactor,” said Sherman. “The Federal Advisory Committee Act sets clear requirements about transparency and avoiding conflicts of interest, and Project Meridian must either comply or stop operating.”

Musk’s SpaceX has secured more than $8 billion in Pentagon contracts in 2026 alone.

Anduril Industries, Luckey’s firm, is known for building autonomous drones. The company won a $2 billion US Navy contract last month, days after Hegseth announced Project Meridian.

“Project Meridian would outsource design of grand military strategy to two extremist Pentagon contractors, Elon Musk and Palmer Luckey,” Robert Weissman, co-president of Public Citizen, said Monday. “Very predictably, they will recommend more spending, much more spending, on more AI-enabled weaponry. That would simultaneously make the world more dangerous and starve funding for domestic and human needs.”

“The law demands balance on advisory committees, precisely to prevent connected insiders like Musk and Luckey from writing policy at the expense of the public,” Weissman added.

  • When Trump Threatens to Overturn an Election, NYT Suggests He Might Have a Point

    Spread the love

Article by Ari Paul republished from FAIR under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported License.

We don’t know if there was a second gunman involved in the JFK assassination in Dallas. We do know that there is a second Dan Sullivan running for US Senate in Alaska.

Can you believe it? Two Dan Sullivans? In Alaska? The New York Times is on it.

ABC: Trump told DOJ to sue to block Alaska Senate results if Republican narrowly loses

“It’s never our intention to improperly interfere with elections or the state confirmation process or certification process,” said Attorney General Todd Blanche (ABC News, 10/23/26), in a statement that cried out to be scrutinized by reporters.

Dan S. Sullivan is a Republican representing Alaska in the US Senate, facing a strong challenge from former Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola. Her viability in the race is worrying the GOP about the midterms generally—while also, as a pro-oil Democrat, encouraging those in her party who fear it’s moving too far to the left (Politico, 10/28/26).

People outside the snowy state learned about the existence of another Republican on the ballot named Daniel J. Sullivan, Jr.—the state has a multi-candidate ranked-choice system—when President Donald Trump ordered the Department of Justice, as ABC News (10/23/26) reported,

to preemptively file a lawsuit to try to block the certification of the crucial Alaska Senate race if Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan loses, citing name confusion among the candidates.

This struck many as a sign, as Time (10/28/26) put it, “that the midterm elections could face unprecedented interference by federal authorities.” The last time Trump won a major election, he instigated an insurrection to try to block certification of his opponent’s victory. His threat to annul the voting result in Alaska suggested that he was going to similarly reject the results of the 2026 midterms.

But the New York Times put its investigative efforts, not into Trump’s threat to democracy, but into attempting to document that he might have a point.

    ‘To coax other would-be spoilers’

NYT: Inside Democrats’ Secret Effort to Stack Alaska’s Ballot

The New York Times investigation (10/28/26) notes in passing that “the Justice Department…filed a lawsuit in federal court at President Trump’s behest last week seeking to block certification of the election results if votes for the other Mr. Sullivan cost Senator Sullivan the win”—as if that were the normal operation of politics and not a shocking trampling of democratic norms.

The New York Times produced an in-depth report (10/28/26) headlined “Inside Democrats’ Secret Effort to Stack Alaska’s Ballot.” The subhead: “Operatives aligned with Mary Peltola, the Democratic nominee for Senate, spent months recruiting candidates to peel votes from Senator Dan Sullivan, the Republican.”

The meat of the piece, by Times political reporter Kellen Browning, was this:

The Peltola campaign has repeatedly denied any involvement in [Daniel J. Sullivan’s] candidacy. But the Times has found, based on interviews and text messages, along with documents prepared for a potential lawsuit against the campaign, that not only did Ms. Peltola’s team work with people trying to recruit Mr. Sullivan to run for Senate, but the effort was much broader. The group worked to coax other would-be spoilers into the race, to dilute the incumbent’s support and help catapult the Democrat to victory.

Anyone who follows US elections closely knows that spoilers are a part of politics. Sometimes campaigns will quietly help third-party candidates from the opposite end of the political spectrum in hopes that they’ll siphon votes from their major rival (Fortune, 9/2/24). And other times they recruit candidates with a look-alike name in hopes that some voters will check the box next to the wrong candidate.

According to Ballotpedia, “28 states had at least one 2026 race between candidates that share the same last name.” In 1998, who did Georgia Republicans find to challenge civil rights hero and then–Democratic Rep. John Lewis? Another guy named John Lewis.

The Brookings Institution (10/28/26) recalled when John F. Kennedy first ran for Congress:

One of Kennedy’s opponents was an Italian-American Boston city councilor named Joe Russo. Kennedy’s father, Joe, set about to confuse voters by allegedly paying another Joe Russo, a janitor with no political experience, to run on the primary ballot as well—in hopes of splitting the Italian vote. As it turned out, it wasn’t necessary to get the other Joe Russo into the race—Kennedy won the primary by a large margin.

    ‘Common in politics’

While not a particularly honorable campaign tactic, recruiting a candidate with a confusing name is not a crime. In fact, the New York Times admits:

Ballot-stacking tactics are common in politics and generally considered legal—and have been employed by both parties in Alaska. But this operation, which has not been reported before, reveals the lengths to which Democrats went to seek advantage in a Senate race that could determine control of the chamber.

So these tactics are “common,” and “legal,” but also reveal “the lengths” Democrats are willing to go to win a historic midterm election? Common, legal lengths?

The paper also said that “Alaska’s voting system makes it especially easy to add spoilers to the ballot,” which “allowed Mr. Sullivan of Petersburg, a longtime supporter of Ms. Peltola and other Democrats, to land a spot on” the ballot. It continued, “Republicans have also taken advantage of this system,” noting that when Peltola “ran for re-election to the House two years ago, the state Republican Party backed an effort to help a Democrat—an inmate who ran his campaign from a New York prison—stay on the ballot.”

While the article does lay out the drama of how Democrats seized an opportunity to make the election messier for the incumbent, the Times doesn’t ever make a case that Democrats broke the law.

    ‘Liberal shrieks fading now’

New York Post: Trump calls for Alaska Dem candidate Mary Peltola to drop out, face prosecution days before midterm election

Trump used the New York Times report as a pretext to call for the jailing of another political opponent (New York Post, 10/28/26). Which raises the question: Should you report on politics differently when you know you have a president who is trying to use the Department of Justice to jail his political opponents?

You know what is a crime? Annulling an election so that the candidate who wins the most votes can’t take office. Though Trump administration officials had already announced an intent to commit that crime, the New York Times report seemed tailor-made to abet their efforts.

Predictably, Republicans seized on the Times investigation to lend legitimacy to Trump’s election-threatening efforts. Trump himself called for Peltola “to drop out of the race and be criminally prosecuted,” the New York Post (10/28/26) reported; it quoted the president, “They said they didn’t do it, and they did do it, and they got caught.” The tabloid explained:

Top aides of Peltola were behind the recruitment effort, the New York Times reported. She had originally denied any involvement, but Wednesday’s shock report revealed she was “definitely aware” of the scheme.

Wall Street Journal editorial board member Kimberley Strassel (10/28/26) explicitly cited the Times report as an after-the-fact justification for Trump’s election-nullification plan:

When the Justice Department sued Alaska over its manipulated Senate ballot, liberal shrieks could initially be heard up to the Arctic. They’re fading now, after the New York Times on Wednesday published evidence that Democrats rigged Alaska’s ranked-choice ballot with a decoy candidate who threatens to deny Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan re-election.

The National Review‘s Michael A. Fragoso (10/28/26) also relied on the “bombshell New York Times report” to bolster his argument that the recruiting a same-named candidate was “different from lawful trickery.” The second Sullivan, Fragoso argued, is “designed to take voters who intend to vote for the incumbent and trick them into not doing so even though they want to.”

Tell that to Florida Democratic voters who were deceived into voting for Pat Buchanan for president with maldesigned ballots in 2000, an incident that helped usher George W. Bush into the White House without a popular mandate (American Political Science Review, 12/01).

    ‘Disturbing new evidence’

PBS:Alaska's governor orders a probe into Peltola's Senate campaign over spoiler candidate controversy

Nowhere does this AP report (via PBS, 10/29/26) acknowledge that a president and governor threatening a opposition politician with prison over her campaign tactics is a dangerous development.

The New York Times investigation prompted state officials as well as the feds to target Peltola (AP, 10/29/26). Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy, a Republican, announced that he had ordered an investigation into whether Peltola should face civil or criminal penalties, saying that the Times report

reveals disturbing new evidence of an organized effort to manipulate Alaska’s elections by recruiting candidates—including one with the same name as an incumbent US senator—to deliberately confuse voters and misdirect their votes.

Times editors had to have known that this article would be a gift to an administration that claims Democratic wins are not legitimate, and that the very notion of Republican losses can only be explained by complicated election rigging rather than not getting enough votes (New York Times, 8/20/26, 10/17/26, 10/25/26, 10/27/26, 10/27/26).

If the Times had found potential wrongdoing by Alaska Democrats, that would have been a necessary story for readers. This, however, is a long-read about the usual shenanigans of US electoral politics. It doesn’t add to our understanding of politics, nor is it especially damning in the bigger context.

It is mildly entertaining, for sure, but the biggest impact this investigation will have is providing more justification for an authoritarian administration that already has plans in place to shut down democratic outcomes.

While Congresswoman Ilhan Omar calls out the “fascist” Trump administration’s recent raid on her home in fundraising emails as she seeks reelection in a solidly Democratic Minnesota district, over three-quarters of the progressive’s fellow Democrats in the US House of Representatives came together on Monday to condemn the “weaponization of federal law enforcement against her.”

As part of what the White House and US Department of Justice (DOJ) have confirmed is an ongoing criminal investigation, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents executed a search warrant on Omar’s Washington, DC home on October 12, and “were seen carrying out boxes of documents from the home, and reportedly obtained her DNA, personal phone, and passport,” notes House Democrats’ letter to Attorney General Todd Blanche and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin.

President Donald Trump has a long history of attacking the Somali-American lawmaker with “baseless lies and smear campaigns,” and during this probe, Mullin, Vice President JD Vance, and White House adviser Stephen Miller and his wife, Katie Miller, have piled on. The letter calls the warrant “a dramatic escalation of an almost decade-long campaign of attacks on Congresswoman Omar.”

The persecution of @repilhan.bsky.social just days before an election is vile and politically-motivated.I'm leading 175 House Democrats in denouncing this. When we retake power, we have to seriously look at how we can stop these abuses of power — starting with the power of the purse.

    — Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (@jayapal.house.gov) 2026-10-26T20:12:24.695285356Z

“This weaponization of law enforcement to harass a sitting member of Congress 22 days before an election is unprecedented and unacceptable,” argued the Democrats, led by Reps. Greg Casar (Texas), Yvette Clarke (NY), Robert Garcia (Calif.), Pramila Jayapal (Wash.), Jamie Raskin (Md.), and Bennie Thompson (Miss.), who are all congressional committee ranking members or caucus chiefs.

The four-term congresswoman is running again in Minnesota’s 5th District, which earlier this year was targeted in Trump’s Operation Metro Surge. That was part of his mass detention and deportation agenda, which has involved sending armed immigration agents into various communities, where they have killed, injured, and violated the rights of US citizens and noncitizens alike.

Early voting began in Minnesota just days after the raid. The members of Congress wrote that “news of the search warrant, whether properly predicated or not, could affect voters’ decisions, which is exactly why federal law enforcement should not engage in such conduct when voters are casting their ballots. This type of interference strips Minnesotans of their right to a free and fair election guaranteed to them under the Constitution.”

“Your actions are clearly driven by a pre-determined political outcome rather than an objective pursuit of justice,” the lawmakers told Blanche and Mullin. “Your probe into the congresswoman reportedly concerns her late father’s filing of immigration paperwork after she fled Somalia’s civil war at age 8, making her a US citizen at age 17. This does not justify a pre-dawn raid on her home for paperwork her father filed when she was a minor.”

Citing previous cases in which Trump’s second administration “has prioritized retribution over its responsibility to apply the laws without fear or favor,” the lawmakers added that “your unprecedented attempt to influence an election through federal law enforcement will also fail but the attempt itself is incompatible with our democracy.”

We stand with @repilhan.bsky.social against Trump's baseless attacks and the continuing weaponization of the federal government.

    — The Progressive Caucus (@usprogressives.bsky.social) 2026-10-26T19:16:27.464Z

“Political disagreements never justify intimidation, and no president should use the power of the federal government to threaten, silence, or intimidate political opponents,” the Democrat stressed. “You have already disgraced the offices you hold, and we demand you refrain from taking any further actions that could affect the outcome of the upcoming election.”

Democrats are aiming to reclaim majorities in both chambers of Congress in the November 3 elections—and if they do, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who could become the next speaker, made clear last month that party members “are preparing a vast oversight agenda” and “we haven’t ruled anything out,” including impeachment.

The administration had allocated $20 million in public funds to pay for ads celebrating Trump weeks before the midterms.

Less than a week before Election Day, another federal judge on Wednesday blocked the Trump administration from using taxpayer funds to run ads promoting the president.

US district judge Loren AliKhan froze the White House Office of Management and Budget’s $20 million allocation to run the ads, saying the administration likely “used public dollars to unlawfully finance a national media campaign in the final weeks before the November 2026 elections.”

The ruling follows a lawsuit filed earlier this month by the Democratic National Committee (DNC), which accused President Donald Trump of using funds to “finance a national propaganda campaign.”

The ads, which stated that they were “paid for by the US government,” attacked Trump’s enemies as “Marxists,” celebrated his military operations in Iran and Venezuela, and promoted his personal declaration that his presidency marked the beginning of a “golden age of America.” Another ad that was reportedly prepared but never aired declared that “God made Trump.”

Following public outcry over the ads, Trump promised that future ads would be paid for with money he raised for his super political action committee MAGA Inc.

“That promise went unfulfilled,” wrote AliKhan, an appointee of former President Joe Biden. “The ads continued to air with the ‘Paid for by the US government’ disclosure for at least another week.”

The US Department of Justice has also acknowledged that the ads continued to run hundreds of times after a court order issued on October 11 requiring them to be canceled.

Federal law prohibits using federal appropriations for “publicity or propaganda purposes within the United States not heretofore authorized by Congress.”

The DNC argued that the administration’s use of public funds illegally “deprives the DNC of a fair electoral process by adding public funds to the resources available to support Republican candidates.”

AliKhan agreed that there was “little doubt that defendants’ unlawful use of public funds makes it more difficult for the DNC to achieve its mission of ‘electing Democratic candidates in federal, state, and local elections across the country.’”

Martin added that “Trump’s illegal and desperate attempt to save his cratering approval ratings ahead of the midterm elections only underscores how out of touch he is with the American people, who will hold him and Republicans accountable for their destructive agenda at the ballot box next week.”
