AT LEAST 135 people, including children sleeping in tents, were killed over the weekend in relentless bombardment of Gaza, as all public hospitals in the north were rendered out of service.

It came as the Israeli military said that it has begun extensive ground operations throughout northern and southern Gaza as part of its Operation Gideon’s Chariots, which it claims aims to seize territory, displace large segments of the population to Gaza’s south and assert greater control over the distribution of humanitarian aid.

Among the dead were three journalists and 18 children, according to medical sources, after Israeli warplanes struck a tent encampment sheltering displaced Palestinians in al-Mawasi, near Khan Younis in southern Gaza. Verified footage shared by Al Jazeera shows charred bodies lying in the sand, including several children, with some on fire.

Hamas condemned the bombing as a “brutal crime” and accused the United States of complicity for providing political and military backing to Israel.A Civil Defence spokesman said that more than 200 people are missing under rubble, but emergency teams are unable to access the areas due to continued Israeli strikes.

“Hundreds of families have been erased from the civil registry due to the Israeli bombing,” he said. “Those who do not die from Israeli bombing in Gaza die of hunger.”

Israel has repeatedly targeted hospitals in its genocide, claiming Hamas operates within medical facilities.

But human rights organisations and UN experts have accused Israel of systematically dismantling Gaza’s health infrastructure.

Jeremy Corbyn (right) on at the meeting in Huddersfield

Former Labour Party leader and Independent MP Jeremy Corbyn came closer than ever to declaring a new left electoral coalition or political party on Saturday.

He said a new formation would be set up before the English local elections in May 2026— earlier if possible. He said that everyone on the left outside Labour “will want to be part of and support” it.

Hasfsa, a health worker in the audience, told Socialist Worker, “I was so pleased with what Jeremy said. It’s what I have been waiting to hear.

“I am so disappointed with Keir Starmer and horrified by the slaughter of Palestinians. We need a new start that puts justice before personal ambition and listens to the people.”

Corbyn was speaking as around 200 people joined a Conference of Resistance in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

It’s one of several gatherings taking place as people rage against Labour’s betrayals and want to hit back at the rise of Reform UK.

Corbyn savaged the Labour government for its “complicity” with the genocide in Gaza and for attacking disabled people.

Speaking before Corbyn, the former Leicester MP Claudia Webbe said, “The time for a new left political party is now”. She rammed home her point, saying, “This is not a plea, it’s a declaration.”

The UK ‘Labour party’ government is defending it’s decision to continue granting licences to sell F-35 fighter jet components and other weapons to Israel in the High Court tomorrow. I doubt that there’s any chance of arguing that it’s not genocide, the Israeli government has all but admitted it, proud to murder children and other civilians, attack hospitals, mass-murder journalists and health workers. I wonder if it will be covered by corporate media.

‘Huge victory for democracy’

Police officers and protesters clash in Trafalgar Square during a March for Palestine in London, October 14, 2023

CAMPAIGNERS celebrated a ”huge victory for democracy” today after the Court of Appeal ruled key anti-protest legislation was forced through unlawfully.

The Home Office had appealed a High Court ruling that struck down laws brought in by the previous Tory government in 2023.

The measures expanded police powers to interfere with protests, lowering the threshold from what is considered “serious disruption” to community life, from “significant” and “prolonged” to “more than minor.”

Civil rights group Liberty challenged the law change, arguing that the measures had been voted down months earlier and that then home secretary Suella Braverman had used secondary legislation, which requires far less parliamentary scrutiny, to implement them.Ms Braverman used so-called “Henry VIII powers” to introduce the laws by clarifying the definition of “serious disruption” under the Public Order Act 1986.

Liberty argued that the broad redefinition of “serious disruption” effectively granted the police “almost unlimited powers to impose conditions on protests.”

The High Court ruled it unlawful last May, but the previous government initiated an appeal, which was continued by Labour after it came to power.

Upholding the ruling today, Lord Justice Underhill, Lord Justice Dingemans and Lord Justice Edis said that ”the term ’serious’ inherently connotes a high threshold … [and] cannot reasonably encompass anything that is merely ‘more than minor’.”
