Celebrities including Annie Lennox and Miriam Margolyes sign letter to force after pro-Palestine march route rejected

Annie Lennox and Miriam Margolyes are among artists who have accused the Metropolitan police of giving preferential treatment to a far-right demonstration led by Tommy Robinson over a pro-Palestine protest in London on the same day.

The pro-Palestine movement has had its preferred route through central London for its annual commemoration of Nakba – the mass expulsion of Palestinians – rejected by the Met, while the “Unite the Kingdom” demonstration will take place on the same date in Kingsway, the Strand, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall and Parliament Square. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, posted on X: “London is ours on May 16th.”

An open letter saying that the Met “must not favour the far right over Palestine” has also been signed by the actors Samuel West and Khalid Abdalla, the musicians Billy Bragg and Nadine Shah, as well as MPs, academics, lawyers, trade union and civil society leaders. The Met said the decision was based on the relative scale of the demonstrations.

Billy Howle, who starred in the TV shows The Perfect Couple and The Serpent and also signed the letter, said: “The shocking decision of the police to exclusively favour a far-right demonstration and block this important annual commemoration from the political heart of London will send shivers down the spines of every person of good conscience. It must be overturned.”

The letter says that the pro-Palestine movement informed the force on 18 December of its intention to march on the nearest Saturday to Nakba Day, in keeping with a tradition dating back more than a decade, but that the Met has “instead given over the political centre of London to a hate march called by racist thug ‘Tommy Robinson’”. It calls on the force to “immediately reverse this shameful decision”.

UK must impose sanctions on Israel to meet legal obligations, say more than 800 lawyers

[Guardian] Exclusive: Letter to PM signed by retired supreme court justices among others says lack of action will imperil international legal system

The UK must impose sanctions on the Israeli government and its ministers and also consider suspending it from the UN to meet its “fundamental international legal obligations”, more than 800 lawyers, academics and retired senior judges, including former supreme court justices, have said.

In a letter to the prime minister, they welcome Keir Starmer’s joint statement last week with the leaders of France and Canada warning that they were prepared to take “concrete actions” against Israel. But they urge him to act without delay as “urgent and decisive action is required to avert the destruction of the Palestinian people of Gaza”.

The signatories, including the former supreme court justices Lord Sumption and Lord Wilson, court of appeal judges and more than 70 KCs, say that war crimes, crimes against humanity and serious violations of international humanitarian law are being committed in Palestine.

There is mounting evidence of genocide, which is either being perpetrated or at a minimum at serious risk of occurring, the letter states, highlighting recent comments by the Israeli finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, who said Israel’s army would “wipe out” what remains of Palestinian Gaza.

The signatories tell Starmer: “All states, including the UK, are legally obliged to take all reasonable steps within their power to prevent and punish genocide; to ensure respect for international humanitarian law; and to bring to an end violations of [the right to self-determination]. The UK’s actions to date have failed to meet those standards … The international community’s failure to uphold international law in relation to the occupied Palestinian territory contributes to a deteriorating international climate of lawlessness and impunity and imperils the international legal system itself. Your government must act now, before it is too late.”

Experiencing issues with this image not appearing. I suspect because it's so critical of Zionist Keir Starmer's support of and complicity in Israel's genocides.

Displaced Palestinians fleeing Beit Lahia amid ongoing Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip arrive in Jabalia, northern Gaza, May 16, 2025

LAWYERS shared harrowing testimonies today from doctors who treated children shot through the heart in Gaza as the government defended its decision to continue exporting arms to Israel in court.

In written submissions for the case, the government has claimed there is a “tenable view that no genocide has occurred or is occurring.”

But last August, doctors submitted chilling evidence now being shared by Global Legal Action Network (Glan), which launched the challenge alongside Palestinian organisation Al-Haq.

Dr Mark Perlmutter, who has been a humanitarian surgeon for 30 years, travelled to Gaza with the World Health Organisation last year.

He recounted how he “saw more incinerated and shredded children than I have ever seen in my entire life of working in war zones combined.”

He described treating children “whose faces had been completely disfigured, exposing the muscles.“They no longer had faces”.”I treated so many children that had been snipered, some of them multiple times.”

He said that he evaluated two children who had been snipered twice each in the head and chest.

“These two children were shot so perfectly in the chest that I couldn’t have put my stethoscope over their hearts more accurately.”

Truss sends cease and desist to Starmer demanding he stop saying she crashed the economy

Liz Truss has issued Sir Keir Starmer with a cease and desist letter, warning him to stop saying she “crashed the economy”.

The former prime minister’s lawyers have said the remarks – made since the lead up to the general election – are likely to “cause serious harm to her reputation”, claiming they are “false and defamatory”.

They also suggest that assertions made by the Labour leader before the July general election contributed to Ms Truss losing her South West Norfolk seat.

Sir Keir has repeatedly claimed the former prime minister crashed the economy, referring to the weeks after her 2022 mini-budget which sparked gilt market freefall and a run on sterling after she introduced unfunded tax cuts.

The letter, originally seen by the Telegraph, argues that the fallout did not amount to an economic crash, since there was no fall in economic output or rise in unemployment.

Lawyers vow to not prosecute climate activists

More than 120 lawyers [actually barristers] have vowed to not act against activists from groups such as Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil who are “exercising their democratic right of peaceful protest”.

They have published a “Declaration of Conscience”, and face the prospect of disciplinary action.

The chair of the Bar Council Nick Vineall KC said it was “disappointing”.

They have called upon the government and their colleagues to “act urgently to do whatever they can to address the causes and consequences of the climate and ecological crises and to advance a just transition to sustainability”.

They now face the prospect of disciplinary action for breaching professional regulations such as the so-called ‘cab rank rule’, which requires lawyers to take on any case within their competence.
