The military spokesperson for the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades said he welcomed what he described as the “heroic action” by fighters of the Islamic resistance in Lebanon in confronting Israeli forces and inflicting heavy losses on them, as well as striking what he called significant targets deep inside Israel.

In a message issued on Monday, the spokesperson said: “We stand with the resistance fighters as they exercise their right to defend their land and the sovereignty of their country in the face of aggression that has not stopped for a single moment.”

He added that the group offered condolences for those martyred in Lebanon and wished a speedy recovery for the wounded, and safety for the country’s people.

Al-Qassam spokesperson also referred to the late Hassan Nasrallah, saying he “took a moral and courageous decision to stand with Gaza and its people, and gave his life along with many of his brothers on the road to Jerusalem,” according to the Palestinian news agency Ma’an News Agency.

He continued: “We call on the people of our nation to unite and stand together against the plans of the Zionist enemy and its intentions to expand the aggression to more Arab and Islamic countries, as it no longer hides its ambitions to establish what it calls ‘Greater Israel’.”

Call Grows to Impeach Trump, ‘The Most Dangerous Man on the Planet’

“Trump’s illegal war on Iran and the rule of law,” said one pair of campaigners, “establish an intolerable pattern of egregious abuses of power, directly threatening our constitutional order, our safety, and our way of life.”

After the unprovoked bombing of Iran over the weekend by the United States and Israel—strikes that included the unlawful assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Hosseini Khamenei—the call for US President Donald Trump to be impeached and removed from office has grown as the straightest path to hold the US leader to account for the attacks which policy and human rights experts have condemned as a serious war crime.

With a regional war in the Middle East that was already boiling from Gaza to Lebanon and from Syria to Yemen now exploding in the wake of the US-Israeli attacks on Iran, Globe and Mail columnist Debra Thompson on Sunday called Trump “the most dangerous man on the planet.”

US-POLITICS-CONGRESS-DEMOCRATS

As Trump Marches US Toward Iran War, Critics Ask: Where’s the ‘Pushback’ From Dems and Media?

“Rather than ending wars,” Thompson notes, “Trump has initiated military action eight times, carrying out attacks in seven countries (Syria, Iraq, Iran, Nigeria, Yemen, Somalia, and Venezuela) in 2025.” Such a pattern of violence and warmongering should make clear that failure to restrain Trump has only emboldened him.

“The recurring danger in this latest presidential aggression is that there are no guardrails, no constraints, and no post-hoc justification,” writes Thomson, “other than that Mr. Trump is the President of the United States and can do whatever he wants.”

But American presidents cannot simply do whatever they want. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll out Sunday, less than 25% support the president’s aggression against Iran. In the first wave of the US military attack, an Iranian school for girls was bombed, killing over 108 civilians, mostly children.

While some congressional lawmakers are pushing for a vote this week on a War Powers Resolution to curtail US military operations against Iran, others are demanding more robust action from Congress to bring Trump’s war-making to an end.

“Under Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution, only Congress has the power to declare war, as well as to raise and support armies, provide and maintain a navy, and fund and regulate the military,” declared novelist and political activists Stephen King on Saturday. “Impeach the SOB.”

Mike Hersh and Alan Minsky, respectively the communications director and executive director of the Progressive Democrats of America, argued in a Sunday op-ed for Common Dreams that “Trump’s illegal, unconstitutional war on Iran is not only a moral and humanitarian disaster, but also a profound constitutional crisis.”

According to Hersh and Minsky:

Trump’s illegal war on Iran and the rule of law establish an intolerable pattern of egregious abuses of power, directly threatening our constitutional order, our safety, and our way of life. These intertwined crises cry out for an immediate, decisive response by the Congress and the US public.

Therefore, PDA demands that all members of Congress, Democrats, Republicans, and Independents alike, uphold their oath of office to defend our constitutional republic. The Constitution offers one and only one remedy when President a repeatedly breaks the law and arrogantly refuses to abide by the limits on the power clearly laid out in the Constitution. That remedy is impeachment, followed by removal from office.

Matt Duss, executive vice president for the Center for International Policy, said that US lawmakers, as well as the American people they represent, “must also be ready to hold the president and his administration accountable for this breach of US and international law.”

“The failure to hold past presidents liable for war crimes and related violations of our own laws has helped lead to this dangerous moment, with a seemingly unrestrained president endangering millions of lives with impunity,” warned Duss. “The forever wars and the imperial presidency must finally come to an end.”

Lebanon’s Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for shelling an Israeli military site in the north of the occupied territories.

In a statement, the group said it had targeted the Mishmar HaCarmel site, south of the occupied city of Haifa, with a salvo of rockets and drones.

In response, Israeli forces carried out heavy air strikes on several locations in Beirut’s southern suburbs and villages in the Bekaa Valley.

The Israeli army issued evacuation orders for dozens of towns in southern and eastern Lebanon.

In a statement, it said residents of 53 villages in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa must leave their homes and move at least one kilometre away.

The developments came amid large-scale displacement from Beirut’s southern suburbs and southern Lebanon, with some schools opened to accommodate those fleeing.

Earlier, the Israeli army said it had intercepted one rocket fired from Lebanon, while other rockets landed without causing damage or casualties.

Israel’s Home Front Command confirmed that sirens sounded in the northern town of Margaliot over fears of a drone infiltration.

Israel’s public broadcaster reported that Hezbollah had launched rockets towards northern Israel for the first time since the ceasefire agreement in November 2024. There has been no official comment from Hezbollah on this specific claim.

The broadcaster quoted senior security officials as saying that rocket fire from Lebanon would be met with a strong response.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Haifa said the rocket fire from Lebanon was a development that required immediate action and a firm response.

Hamas calls Israeli attack on Lebanon refugee camp ‘crime against civilians’

Palestinian group Hamas on Friday rejected Israeli claims that a strike on the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon targeted one of its command centers, calling the attack a “crime against civilians” and a violation of Lebanese sovereignty, Anadolu reports.

In a statement, Hamas condemned the attack as a “brutal aggression” by the Israeli army against the camp in the city of Sidon, saying the strike resulted in deaths and injuries among civilians.

“Targeting a camp that houses thousands of Palestinian refugees and is densely populated constitutes a dangerous escalation and a blatant disregard for international laws and norms,” the statement said.

The movement denied Israeli allegations that the targeted site was a Hamas facility, calling them “baseless pretexts that do not stand up to facts.” It said the attacked building belonged to a joint security force responsible for maintaining order and stability inside the camp.

It held the Israeli government fully responsible for the consequences of the strike and called on the international community and Arab and Islamic countries to take urgent action to halt ongoing attacks and ensure protection for Palestinians “wherever they are present.”

Earlier, two people were killed and three others injured in an Israeli drone strike on the camp, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent in Ain al-Hilweh.

Lebanon’s official National News Agency reported that the strike hit the Hittin neighborhood inside the densely populated camp, causing material damage to the targeted building and surrounding structures.

The Israeli military claimed in a statement that it struck a Hamas command center in the Ain al-Hilweh area.

The Israeli army carried out a similar strike in November. 2025 in the same area where at least 13 people were killed and several others injured. Later, the army claimed that the attack targeted Hamas members inside the camp.

At the time, Hamas decried the attack as a “brutal assault” on civilians, saying the Israeli strike targeted a group of teenagers on an open sports field.

The latest attack came amid repeated Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024, killing and wounding hundreds of Lebanese. Israel continues to occupy five Lebanese hilltops seized during the latest war, in addition to other Lebanese areas it has held for decades.

‘Crime Against Environment and Health’: Israel Slammed for Dropping Toxic Glyphosate on Lebanon, Syria

“This incident cannot be viewed in isolation from the scorched-earth policy pursued by the Israeli army,” said watchdog Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor.

The Lebanese president has accused the Israeli government of committing “a crime against the environment and health” for allegedly spraying the herbicide glyphosate on agricultural lands in Lebanon and Syria.

As reported by Naharnet on Wednesday, Lebanon’s agriculture and environmental ministries recently conducted analysis of soil near the site where Israel had sprayed a chemical substance and found glyphosate “20 to 30 times higher than the average” in the area.

The ministries said that this level of glyphosate in the soil could cause “damage to agricultural production,” while also harming soil fertility.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun denounced the spraying as a “flagrant violation of Lebanese sovereignty,” and called on the United Nations (UN) and the international community at large to take action to stop future attacks.

Al-Jazeera reported on Tuesday that the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was warned by the Israel military on Monday to stay away from the border area because it planned to deploy a “nontoxic chemical substance” there, forcing the peacekeeping forces to cancel over a dozen planned activities.

Stephane Dujarric, a spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, condemned Israel for preventing UNIFIL from conducting operations, emphasizing that “any activity that may put peacekeepers and civilians at risk is of serious concern.”

Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said on Wednesday that it has detected “Israeli aircraft spraying pesticides of unknown composition over farmland in the countryside of Quneitra in southern Syria” on January 26 and 27.

“This incident cannot be viewed in isolation from the scorched-earth policy pursued by the Israeli army,” the human rights watchdog said. “It forms part of a pattern of systematic destruction of agricultural land, including the burning of approximately 9,000 hectares during recent military operations using white phosphorus and incendiary munitions.”
