Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has accepted more than half a million pounds from foreign companies, governments, and donors while serving as an MP, DeSmog can reveal.

Since July 2024, when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Clacton, Farage has received almost £2 million in income and gifts, with £675,000 coming from foreign sources. Of Farage’s 28 benefactors, 20 are based abroad (71 percent).

This comes amid growing scrutiny of the foreign influences on British democracy following attempts by the Labour government to clamp down on overseas donations to UK political parties.

Farage’s largest foreign income stream has been Cameo – the U.S. platform where celebrities record videos for money – earning £222,000 on the site since being elected to Parliament. Farage has now deleted his profile on the platform after a Guardian investigation found he had sold Cameo videos repeating extremist slogans and endorsing a neo-Nazi event.

This income has been received on top of Farage’s £94,000 a year public salary.

Labour’s chair Anna Turley said: “Nigel Farage rarely turns up to do his actual job. Yet he finds time to jet off around the world on his donor’s private plane and trouser half a million quid while families struggle. Reform are not on your side. They’re just in it for themselves.”

version of this article was published by The Mirror.

The Reform leader has also been paid for a range of foreign speaking events, including £40,000 to address Nomad Capitalist Live in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in September 2024. Nomad Capitalist, which is based in Hong Kong, advises the super rich on how to cut their tax bills.

Farage has also received gifts from foreign governments. As revealed by DeSmog, the Abu Dhabi government provided tickets and hospitality worth £10,000 for Farage to attend the local Formula One Grand Prix in December.

“At a time when trust in politics is at rock bottom, the public deserves absolute confidence that their MPs are working solely in service of their constituents and their country, not dancing to the tune of foreign interests,” said Kamila Kingstone, senior campaign lead at Spotlight on Corruption.

“Cases like this make it painfully clear that transparency alone is not enough and that the current system leaves far too much room for foreign influence. The government urgently needs to impose tougher limits on MPs’ second jobs and on the gifts and payments they are allowed to accept, so that public service cannot be overshadowed by private gain.”

Despite claiming to represent working-class voters, Farage – the UK’s highest-paid MP – has also received private jet trips worth £85,000 from major Reform donor Christopher Harborne. A billionaire cryptocurrency investor, Harborne is based in Thailand, where he has lived for over 20 years.

Farage is a major backer of cryptocurrencies, and has £215,000 invested in a UK Bitcoin treasury, Stack BTC – owned by Paul Withers, who runs the gold exchange Direct Bullion, which has paid Farage more than £500,000 since he became an MP. Farage’s Stack BTC shares have reportedly doubled in value since he bought them, largely due to the fanfare around his investment.

Harborne is Reform’s biggest donor, having given £12 million to the party last year and more than £22 million since 2019. However, his contributions to the party are now in jeopardy after Labour introduced new rules that cap donations from overseas residents to £100,000 a year.

Earlier this month, crypto entrepreneur and right-wing philanthropist Ben Delo said he had given £4 million to Reform and would be moving back to the UK in order to circumvent the government’s new donation rules.

“Farage is bought and paid for by vested interests,” Green Party deputy leader Rachel Millward said. “Clearly, his disdain for foreign people does not extend to those who want to give him money to advance his hateful agenda. He loves open borders when it comes to cash!”

Reform UK is the UK’s leading anti-climate party, with several of its senior figures – including Farage – denying basic climate science. The Reform leader has claimed it’s “absolutely nuts” for CO2 to be considered a pollutant, while his deputy Richard Tice has called it “plant food”.

Of the £1.3 million earned by Farage from UK sources, a number are closely connected to overseas interests. GB News, Farage’s largest single source of income, is co-owned by the Legatum Group – a Dubai-based investment vehicle – and hedge fund manager Paul Marshall, whose firm is 40 percent owned by U.S. private equity giant KKR.

Reform and Farage were approached for comment.

Foreign Influences on Farage

Reform has close connections to a number of foreign regimes and influential overseas interests.

Farage is one of U.S. President Donald Trump’s most vocal European allies, having repeatedly campaigned for his election – including in 2016, when Farage was the first foreign politician to be given an audience with Trump following his presidential victory.

Farage is also well connected in Trump’s MAGA movement.

“He’s seen as the elder statesman. He almost has senator status. If England were the 51st state, Nigel Farage would be one of the senators,” one of his longstanding friends, Raheem Kassam, told the New Statesman in December.

As documented by DeSmog, Farage has been helping the Heartland Institute – an influential pro-Trump climate science denial group – to extend its influence in the UK and Europe.

The Heartland Institute was one of the groups behind Project 2025 – the authoritarian blueprint for Trump’s second term, convened by the Heritage Foundation.

According to The Spectator, key people from Project 2025 “have been shuttling between London and Washington” to give their advice to Farage.

And the Reform leader has earned thousands from MAGA events since he became an MP.

In the past year, Farage has been paid more than £11,000 to speak at Hillsdale College – a conservative university in Michigan – and nearly £28,000 to speak at the ‘Club for Growth’, a lobby group that has endorsed and campaigned for Trump.

Farage has also racked up donor-funded flights worth at least £150,000 to speak at pro-Trump events since he was elected to Parliament, and has received £47,000 from Trump-donating U.S. tech giants X Corp, Google, and Meta.

But Trump’s America is not the only foreign regime with financial ties to Farage and his party.

In addition to the F1 hospitality given to Farage by the Abu Dhabi government in December, other senior figures in Reform are in business with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In October 2024, the party’s treasurer Nick Candy entered into a “strategic joint venture partnership” with Modon Holding – a real estate company owned by the Abu Dhabi government – via his firm Candy Capital. He has also partnered with the state-owned Dubai World Trade Centre to develop “super-prime” properties on the site.

Meanwhile, Reform’s Nadhim Zahawi – a former Tory minister who defected to Farage’s party in January – is a senior figure at Omniyat, a luxury property developer in Dubai. Farage convened a group of prospective patrons in Dubai earlier this year in an attempt to convince them to donate to the party.

As a result, campaigners are urging the government to close the political finance loopholes that allow foreign regimes and big money interests to shape UK policy.

“An MP’s only real job should be representing their constituents,” said Tom Brake, director of the campaign group Unlock Democracy. “Yet sadly, for some MPs, supplementing their own income appears to have greater appeal.

“This is bad enough, but what is even more concerning is when MPs receive income from foreign sources, particularly foreign governments or organisations closely aligned with them. These financial relationships always risk giving undue influence and leverage to foreign entities, which UK legislators should avoid at all costs.”

In March, the Rycroft Review was released, a government report from former Foreign Office permanent secretary Philip Rycroft, which summarised the threats to British democracy from overseas actors.

“This country faces a persistent problem of foreign interests seeking to exert influence on, and to interfere in, our politics,” Rycroft said. “Too much of this is malign and seeks to sow distrust and exacerbate divisions in UK society, with the ultimate aim of undermining confidence in our democracy… If government does not act swiftly to gear up to counter these threats, there is a real risk they will run away from us.”

Immigrants Delivered $14.5 Trillion Surplus to US Economy Over Last 30 Years: Report

Spread the love

The analysis by the Cato Institute shows in detail why it’s a lie to believe that immigrants are “sucking us dry,” a familiar argument by anti-immigrant nativists like Stephen Miller. (Image: Keith Negley/via Cato Institute report art)

A groundbreaking new report released Tuesday details how immigrants in the United States over the last three decades have contributed a massive surplus to the nation’s economy, resulting in a total of more than $14 trillion over that period due to the fact that immigrant families generate significantly more benefits to fiscal health than they take away in the form of benefits received or downside costs.

The white paper by the libertarian free-marketeers at the Cato Institute, not a left-leaning outfit, builds on an existing model developed by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) to create a first-of-its kind analyses to determine “how immigrants, both legal and illegal, and their children affect government budgets” in a cumulative manner.

Looking at 30 years of data, the 95-page report—titled “Immigrants’ Recent Effects on Government Budgets: 1994-2023”—discovered that immigrants overall “generated a fiscal surplus of about $14.5 trillion” over those years. In part, the NASEM-Cato model shows:

  • Every year from 1994 to 2023, immigrants have paid more in taxes than they received in benefits.
  • Immigrants generated nearly $10.6 trillion more in federal, state, and local taxes than they induced in total government spending.
  • Accounting for savings on interest payments on the national debt, immigrants saved $14.5 trillion in debt over this 30-year period.
  • Immigrants cut US budget deficits by about a third from 1994 to 2023, and fiscal savings grew to $878 billion in 2023.

The paper concludes that “the average immigrant is much less costly than the average US-born American, and that immigrants impose lower costs per person on old-age benefit, education, and public safety programs.”

The findings arrive with the US embroiled in a heated debate about immigration enforcement as President Donald Trump—backed by far-right xenophobes in his inner orbit, including White House deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller and Department of Homeland Security Kristi Noem—has unleashed violent federal agents into communities nationwide to sweep up undocumented workers and their family members.

In a video produced for social media, David J. Bier, director of Immigration Studies at Cato and one of the report’s co-authors, said the analysis shows in detail why it’s a lie to believe that immigrants are “sucking us dry,” a familiar argument by anti-immigrant “nativists” like Miller.

In summary, the report notes that immigrants produce a net fiscal benefit in the US economy because:

  1. The United States collected more in taxes from the average person than it spent on benefits (excluding pure public goods).
  2. Immigrants paid higher-than-average taxes because their higher-than-average employment rate led to higher-than-average incomes.
  3. Immigrants cost the government less than average because they did not add to the cost of the government’s largest expenditure (pure public goods) and received lower-than-average benefits for other major items, particularly old-age benefits and education.

As shown in the figure below, the difference between taxes paid by immigrants and the public benefits they receive “has grown from $158 billion to $572 billion in real terms since 1994.” Just to look at 2023, working immigrants that year paid $1.3 trillion in taxes yet received only $761 billion in benefits.

CATO analyses: immigration taxes versus benefits

This trend, despite endless cries from far-right pundits and xenophobic lawmakers that immigrants are a drain on public coffers, has held steady for decades—with no sign of it ending in the future.

“For decades, nativists have sold America this narrative that immigrant welfare is behind our deficits and debt,” said Bier. “This figure shows how absurd that is.”

The report argues that “rather than treating [immigrants—both documented and undocumented] as the cause of America’s fiscal struggles, we should consider immigrants part of the solution.”

Mark D. Levine, comptroller of New York City, was among the public officials pointing to the report as timely evidence that the Trump-Miller-Noem narrative about immigration is built on a foundation of falsehoods.

“MAGA’s claim that immigrants are a drain on government budgets? It’s a lie,” said Levine.

MAGA implodes: Will Israel’s power over Washington collapse next?

Spread the love

The MAGA empire has turned inward. Its warriors no longer march shoulder to shoulder in lockstep but carve at one another like rival warlords. The movement that once roared in unison now splits along a single, explosive fault line: America First versus Israel First. Two convictions, two armies now face each other inside the same ideological fortress, each convinced it alone holds the mandate of destiny. On one side stands Steve Bannon — raw, furious, unapologetically nationalist. On the other stands Ben Shapiro — polished, venomous, the cultural enforcer of unyielding loyalty to Israel. The alliance that once dominated the American right is devouring itself at an increasing pace. What was once unfathomable is now undeniable: the eighty-year consensus that Israel dictates the boundaries of conservative politics is cracking apart, and the reverberating tremor is shaking the very columns of American power.

The explosion happened in public, not whispered in back rooms or podcasts, but detonated onstage at the first Turning Point USA conference after Charlie Kirk’s assassination. It should have been a sombre moment of unity. Instead, the air stiffened with accusations. Ben Shapiro, self-appointed guardian of ideological purity, initiated his scorched-earth tirade. Unabashedly, he fired the first salvo. He spat contempt at Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens, and Steve Bannon himself. He called them “charlatans” and accused them of extremism. But beneath the theatrics lay the real crime he could not forgive; they dared even entertain the suggestion that American loyalty to Israel is not beyond question. The Israel First Rubicon had been crossed. And Shapiro — furious, brittle, panicked — declared ideological jihad.

Bannon’s deafening reply was not a rebuttal. It was a devastating indictment. He took the same stage and drove a sharp spike through the heart of the illusion that the American right still bows obediently and wholeheartedly before Israeli dictates. Shapiro, he roared, was “a cancer spreading through the body” of conservative politics — not simply wrong, but dangerous, parasitic, devouring the movement from within. This was not an improvised cable-show rhetoric. This was a declaration of civil war inside the American right. And Bannon knew precisely what he was doing and why. The skirmish is not about conference insults. It is about the 2028 presidential election, about power, about whether American nationalism means sovereignty… or subservience.

READ: Israeli army claims tens of thousands of Houthis are preparing attacks from neighbouring countries

The televised public fracture now bleeds into the rank and file. MAGA supporters are forced to choose: Is America sovereign, or is Israel sacred? For decades, that question, among the most critical questions of our time, was forbidden. To ask it was political suicide. To answer it honestly was exile. But history has a cruel habit of forcing buried truths to the surface. And Charlie Kirk — before his death — had already begun whispering those questions. The ghost of that defiance now stalks the movement that bears his name.

Bannon’s latest strident eruption tore the mask off entirely. With brutal clarity, he declared what Israeli leaders never believed they’d hear from their most powerful allies: Israel does not own American foreign policy anymore. He mocked Netanyahu’s protests of “partnership.” He described a protectorate, a client state, a vassal state, terrified of losing its grip instead. And Bannon claimed something far more astonishing — that Trump’s inner circle is already acting accordingly. He describes Kushner, Witkoff, Vance, Rubio negotiating with Qatar, Turkey, Egypt, the UAE — shaping Gaza’s future without asking Tel Aviv’s permission. Israel — long used to dictating American position — now finds itself abruptly sidelined, gripped by fear of being reduced to a secondary role.

Bannon pushed further still. He declared what Netanyahu and his supporters fear most: Israel’s Greater Israel fantasy has destroyed Israel. It overreached. It strangled itself by pursuing a repugnant occupation despised worldwide. The country now wails in rage as the leash slips. Israel is not ascendant. Israel is in the throes of death.

The break is not merely political. It is theological. Cultural. Civilizational.

Bannon predicts a tectonic reversal of a century of Middle Eastern geopolitical order. He claims the United States is unwinding, in months, what empires took decades to build. Turkey — once conquered, now returns. Regional states — Egypt, UAE, maybe even Saudi Arabia — are poised to define the future of Gaza. Hamas may fade into irrelevance. Israel screams in protest. And Washington shrugs and walks away.

OPINION: The cracks in MAGA: the American right is divided over the Middle East

His most explosive idea lands like a theological bombshell: a three-state solution that includes a Christian sovereign stake in Jerusalem. Not symbolism. Not rhetoric. Power. Security. Permanence. Something neither Israel nor Palestinians want even to imagine… but something Bannon argues the world will now impose.

The verdict is merciless: Israel no longer dictates terms. It receives them. Accept the regional future… or walk alone. No money. No arms. No shield. Israeli exceptionalism — once unquestioned gospel in Washington — now may become a relic with time.

The reaction from Israel’s defenders is predictable and frantic. Tucker Carlson is crowned “Antisemite of the Year” by StopAntisemitism, a desperate, brutal attempt to enforce obedience through public shaming. Once, this label would have destroyed a career. Now? It engenders laughter and ridicule. It is worn as a badge of defiance within the America First camp—a signal that a new right exists, a new era has begun—one that refuses to kneel.

This is not a policy debate. This is an ideological exorcism. The American right is purging something that has dominated it for generations. And the fight will be savage and relentless.

The MAGA movement now stands at an existential crossroads. One road leads back to submission — back to the politics of obligation, automatic military aid, unconditional diplomatic protection, the eternal promise that America’s destiny is forever chained to Tel Aviv’s agenda. The other road is brutal, nationalist, and unapologetically self-interested. America First, without disclaimers. America First, without foreign veto. America First, without fear.

The knives are drawn. The war has begun. And the world will watch a battle like no other.

And when the shouting ends, when the slogans fade, when the smoke clears over this ideological battlefield, one truth will remain: American conservatism will never return to what it was… and Israel will never again command what it once did.

Trump’s reversal with call to release Epstein files reveals inability to control Maga allies

President attempts to save face politically after pressuring Republicans to back off their pushes to release files

Donald Trump’s call for Republicans to back the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, an abrupt reversal, is a rare instance of the president being unable to tame his Maga base and being instead forced to accede to it.

Many Republicans are expected to support a vote in the US House this week to force the justice department to release the files. Once the measure passes, it would still need approval in the US Senate, where 13 Republican senators would need to join with all 47 Democrats to approve it.

Trump spent last week aggressively squeezing allies in the US House, including Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Nancy Mace of South Carolina, to back off in their support of releasing the files. Those efforts were unsuccessful, and when it became apparent the measure was going to pass, Trump backed it in an effort to salvage an embarrassing political loss.

The House oversight committee last week released a tranche of documents they obtained from Epstein’s estate, including messages in which Epstein wrote that Trump knew of Epstein’s conduct. The messages also show Trump ally Steve Bannon advising Epstein on how to rehabilitate his image. Epstein further corresponded with other prominent people, including the former treasury secretary and Harvard president Larry Summers; the journalist Michael Wolff; and Kathryn Ruemmler, Barack Obama’s former White House counsel.

The release of those messages has only further increased scrutiny on Trump, and built the pressure to release everything the government still has on Epstein – which could be quite a lot, given the number of federal investigations conducted into him.

Reform has been accused of “importing divisive and dangerous ideas” from Maga politics in the US after a right-wing theologian who opposes abortion in all cases joined the party as Nigel Farage’s adviser.

Cambridge University professor James Orr, who heads the Centre for a Better Britain think tank, is an influential figure in Donald Trump’s administration and is admired by vice-president JD Vance.

His arrival comes soon after the defection from the Tories of right-wing MP Danny Kruger, who holds similar views to Professor Orr.

Green Party leader Zack Polanski said: “Reform UK’s decision to welcome James Orr as a senior advisor to Nigel Farage is further evidence that Farage is embracing dangerous and divisive right wing ideology.

“By choosing someone close to JD Vance to be by his side – someone who describes asylum seekers as ‘invaders’ and someone who is anti abortion – he is signalling that Reform UK have nothing to offer but fuel for divisive, inflammatory politics.

“Orr’s Reform linked think tank The Centre for Better Britain has embraced Trumpian policies in cutting state services, reducing NHS funding and blaming migrants.”
