FORMER Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has urged the party to offer real change as it prepares to launch its general election manifesto.

Responding to Sir Keir Starmer’s infantile charge that the Tories had prepared “a Jeremy Corbyn-style manifesto,” Mr Corbyn hit back, demanding “a fundamental shake-up of our economic and political system.”

He made his appeal as it was revealed that disillusioned members have been pouring out of what Momentum called Starmer’s “hollowed out” party, including more than 50 in Chingford angered at the treatment of candidate Faiza Shaheen.

Ridiculing Starmer’s attempt to connect him with the Tory plans, Mr Corbyn recalled Labour’s 2017 and 2019 manifestos, which offered radical change and on which the present leader had stood without demur.

He said that if they had been “implemented, energy companies wouldn’t be making record profits while millions of people suffer in poverty.

“A billionaire wouldn’t be purchasing Royal Mail. There wouldn’t be raw sewage in our rivers and seas. [Some] 250,000 people wouldn’t be homeless.

“We wouldn’t be wasting public money on private health contracts. And we would be way ahead in the green investment that is needed to tackle the climate crisis.

“These were fully costed proposals that would have redistributed wealth and power, and I was proud to stand alongside millions of voters and activists calling for this transformative change.”

He added change is still more urgent because the “crises we face today are even more pressing and severe.”

Unite, Labour’s biggest trade union backer, has refused to endorse the party’s general election manifesto, saying it does not go far enough on protecting workers’ rights and jobs in the oil and gas industry.

Union leaders were at a meeting on Friday to finalise the party’s 2024 election platform ahead of its launch next week.

The BBC understands that at the meeting Unite announced they would not endorse Labour’s plans.

There is now a question mark over whether Unite will fund the party at the general election. In 2019, Unite gave £3m to Labour’s campaign.

State of Our Rivers Report: Green Party repeats call to take water companies into public ownership

The Green Party has repeated calls for water companies to be brought into public ownership in response to the latest State of Our Rivers report. This has found not a single waterway in England is in good overall health. The Rivers Trust study reveals that the impact of pollution from treated and untreated sewage and agricultural and industrial runoff means rivers are in a worse condition than ever.

Green Party co-leader Adrian Ramsay said:

“The state of our rivers is a national scandal. Despite public outcry over our polluted waterways and coastline the latest State of Our Rivers report shows things haven’t improved since the last report in 2021.

“For too long water companies and consecutive governments have failed to act. Taking our water companies into public ownership, so they work for people, not profit, will be a clear Green Party manifesto commitment.

“For decades, money that should have been invested in improved infrastructure has been siphoned off to water company executives and shareholders. It’s time to flush this failed experiment with privatisation down the drain and for a service as vital as water and sewage to be run for the public good.

“It should also be acknowledged that agricultural pollution contributes to 62% of waterways in England failing to meet good standards. We need to learn from the many innovative farmers who are using regenerative and organic farming methods that prevent chemical runoff into rivers.

“Our rivers should be havens for wildlife and biodiversity and healthy places for people to enjoy. In too many cases they more closely resemble open sewers. Green MPs will make cleaning up our act on water pollution a key priority.”
