Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated on Sunday that his government remains firmly opposed to the establishment of a Palestinian state, issuing the clarification amid intense criticism from far-right parties in his ruling coalition. The backlash followed a US-backed statement at the United Nations referencing a potential path towards Palestinian statehood.

The dispute erupted after the United States and several Muslim-majority countries endorsed a UN resolution supporting former US President Donald Trump’s plan to end the genocide in Gaza. The resolution includes language implying the possibility of an independent Palestinian state, provided that the Palestinian Authority undergoes significant reforms.

The clause triggered outrage among Israel’s far-right leadership, who had already voiced opposition to the Trump-brokered ceasefire in Gaza.

The political fallout now threatens the stability of Netanyahu’s coalition. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich—both influential far-right figures—demanded that Netanyahu explicitly reject any reference to Palestinian statehood. Ben-Gvir warned he would withdraw his party from the government if Netanyahu failed to issue a clear, unequivocal statement.

“Our opposition to a Palestinian state in any territory remains unchanged. Gaza will be demilitarised, and Hamas will be disarmed, one way or another. I don’t need assurances, tweets or lectures from anyone,” Netanyahu responded defiantly.

Illegal Israeli settlers staged 27 intrusions into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem last month, official data showed on Wednesday, Anadolu reports.

The Palestinian Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs said in a monthly report that Israeli forces and illegal settlers stormed the flashpoint site, performed Talmudic rituals and dances, and offered plant sacrifices within the mosque courtyards in October.

Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, along with a number of Knesset members, also raided the mosque to mark a Jewish holiday last month, the ministry said.

Since assuming his post in 2022, Ben-Gvir has forced his way into the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex 13 times, including 10 times since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2023, according to the ministry.

Al-Aqsa Mosque is the world’s third-holiest site for Muslims. Jews call the area Temple Mount, claiming it was the site of two Jewish temples in ancient times.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem, where Al-Aqsa is located, during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. It annexed the entire city in 1980 in a move never recognized by the international community.

The ministry also said that the Israeli army prevented the call to prayer at the Ibrahimi Mosque in the Old City of Hebron in the occupied West Bank 96 times last month.

According to the report, the Ibrahimi Mosque witnessed the raising of Israeli flags, provocative tours by the Israeli forces, and the placement of religious equipment, including Torah stands, wooden cutters, plastic chairs, tents, loudspeakers, and musical instruments.

Israeli attacks have escalated across the occupied West Bank since October 2023, killing more than 1,065 Palestinians and injuring nearly 10,000 others, according to Palestinian figures.

In a landmark opinion last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

A spokesperson for the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office confirmed on Monday evening that Benjamin Netanyahu supports imposing the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners following what she described as a “fair trial”.

The statement was reported by foreign media outlets and cited by Israeli sources.

This announcement came after the Knesset’s National Security Committee earlier in the day approved a draft bill requiring the death penalty for anyone convicted of killing an Israeli on nationalistic or hostile grounds. The bill is expected to be brought for its first reading in the Knesset on Wednesday.

According to Israel’s Channel 12, Netanyahu has given the green light for the legislation to proceed. Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who is sponsoring the bill, said that “the time has come to achieve justice,” stressing that the death penalty must be mandatory and that courts should have no discretion in such cases.

The Hamas movement condemned the committee’s approval of the bill, calling it a serious escalation and a blatant violation of international laws and conventions.

In a statement, Hamas said the committee’s endorsement and the move to bring the bill to a Knesset vote “reflect Israel’s true face” and demonstrate its continued disregard for international humanitarian law and the Third Geneva Convention, which governs the treatment of prisoners of war.

Trump warns Israel of losing all US support over West Bank annexation

US President Donald Trump warned Israel on Thursday that it would lose “all American support” if it proceeded with annexing the occupied West Bank, insisting that such a move “will not happen.”

In an interview with Time magazine, Trump said: “We have had great Arab support. It will not happen (annexation of the West Bank) because I promised the Arab countries that it would not. It will not happen. Israel will lose all US support if it happens.”

The president also claimed he intervened to stop Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from continuing military operations in Gaza, citing concerns over Israel’s waning international backing. “I did it in part to warn of the deteriorating global support Israel enjoys,” Trump said.

Trump’s remarks come amid rising tensions between Washington and Tel Aviv following the Israeli Knesset’s (parliament) preliminary approval on Wednesday of a bill to impose “Israeli sovereignty” over the West Bank—a step widely viewed as a prelude to formal annexation.

The bill, submitted by MK Avi Maoz, leader of the far-right Noam party, passed by a narrow margin of 25 votes to 24, despite Prime Minister Netanyahu’s reported attempts to delay the vote to avoid further friction with Washington.

According to Israel’s Channel 12, internal divisions surfaced within Netanyahu’s governing coalition during the vote. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir welcomed the measure, declaring, “The time to impose sovereignty over the West Bank has come now.”

Trump’s remarks mark one of the sharpest warnings yet from Washington toward Israel since the onset of the Gaza conflict, underscoring the growing rift between the two allies over settlement expansion and the future of the occupied territories.

Videos circulating online have shown Israeli security officers mistreating Palestinian prisoners in the Ketziot Prison, located in the Negev Desert in southern Israel, where the detainees are reportedly held in harsh and degrading conditions, according to Anadolu Agency

The Hebrew-language website Kikar HaShabbat published what it described as a “large-scale documentation,” showing images from inside Ketziot Prison, where Palestinian inmates are subjected to humiliating treatment and strict inspection measures.

According to the website, Israeli photographer Chaim Goldberg entered the prison in February 2025 to document what he called the “lives of security prisoners.”

It added that some of the prisoners shown in the images were later released as part of the latest prisoner exchange deal, which included the release of all Israeli hostages, both alive and deceased, from the Gaza Strip.

The report claimed that Israeli authorities recently permitted the publication of photos and videos of Palestinian prisoners taken inside their cells and courtyards.

The images released by the Hebrew website show Palestinian inmates in severe and humiliating conditions. Some depict overcrowded living spaces and harsh inspection procedures, while others show prisoners shackled or sitting on the ground in ways that highlight degrading treatment.

On 23 October, Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir once again boasted about depriving Palestinian prisoners of their basic rights inside Israeli prisons.
