TWO pro-Palestine campaigners being found guilty of breaching protest conditions yesterday is “a huge setback for civil liberties,” supporters said.

Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) director Ben Jamal and Stop the War vice-chair Chris Nineham made clear they will be appealing the verdicts as they criticised the “absurdity” of the case.

Jeremy Corbyn called the verdicts “a dark day for civil liberties in this country.”

District judge Daniel Sternberg found both Mr Jamal and Mr Nineham guilty of failing to comply with conditions imposed on the January 18 2025 Whitehall protest.

Mr Jamal was in addition found guilty of inciting others to fail to comply following the trial at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

A key part of the defence was that the conditions imposed on the protest, which prevented a march to the BBC, were unlawful.

Defence barrister, Mark Summers KC, submitted a detailed legal argument outlining this case, including that the Court of Appeal had already ruled in a previous case that imposing conditions on the basis of “more than minor” disruption was unlawful.

But Mr Sternberg told the court he was not obliged to give any reasons for his decision, instead handing it down in a 54-page written judgment, with a short summary for the media.

He gave both men conditional discharges of 18 and 12 months respectively and ordered them each to pay £7,500 in costs.

Speaking outside the court, Mr Nineham said: “We think this is an extraordinary and shocking decision and a huge setback for civil liberties in this country.

“It is clearly part of an ongoing criminalisation of the Palestine movement in which people protesting against a genocide are being targeted by a British Establishment that is colluding with it.

“It is an attempt to send a chilling message across society that people shouldn’t risk protesting. It is an attempt that will not stop us.”

Mr Jamal said: “We will be appealing. We will be appealing because of concerns about how this trial has been conducted.

“The judge did not see fit to deliver his judgment in open court.

“I have always been of the view that in a court, justice must not only be done, it must be seen to be done.

From the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC)

Labour Party officials are attempting to stifle debate on Palestine at the party conference and prevent calls for the Government to take meaningful steps to end complicity in Israel’s genocide in Gaza. The Conference Arrangements Committee (CAC) met yesterday and decided to rule out more than 30 motions submitted by constituency Labour Partys (CLPs) and affiliated organisations ahead of the party conference in Liverpool which begins on Sunday 28th September. Every motion on Palestine was ruled out of order by the CAC.

Contemporary motions at conference have to meet the criteria that the issue must not have been substantially addressed in the National Policy Framework (NPF) Annual Report 2025 which was published on 8th August. The overwhelming majority of Palestine motions were ruled out of order on the grounds that the motions do “not relate to a new issue not substantially covered in the NPF report”. This is despite the fact many focused on events that took place after the NPF Report was published. These include the announcement of the Israeli government’s plans to militarily occupy Gaza City on 8 August and the killing of five Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza City on 10 August.

The motions also make demands on the Labour Party that are not included in the NPF Report, such as an end to all arms trade and military cooperation with Israel, comprehensive sanctions, and a ban on trade that aides or assists Israel’s violations of international law.

The number of motions sent to conference demanding the party takes more action on Palestine has dramatically increased since last year, when just three motions were sent to conference. This ten-fold increase shows the growing level of anger at the grassroots at the leadership’s position. Recent polling has found that 72% of Labour’s 2024 voters want a full arms embargo on Israel.

Keir Starmer objects to criticism of the IDF. He asks how could anyone object to them starving people to death, forced marches like the Nazis did, bombing Gaza's hospitals and universities, mass-murdering journalists, healthworkers and starving people queuing for food, killing and raping prisoners and murdering children. He calls for people to stop obstructing his genocide for Israel.

Britain faces pressure to suspend arms sales to Israel following international outcry against plans to take over Gaza City

Palestinians rush to collect humanitarian aid airdropped by parachutes into Gaza City, northern Gaza Strip, August 7, 2025

PRESSURE mounted on Britain yesterday to follow Germany’s lead in suspending arms sales to Israel, amid international outcry against Israeli ministers’ plans to take over Gaza City.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said Israel’s decision to further escalate its offensive in Gaza is wrong and urged the Israeli government to reconsider.

His failure to respond with action, however, despite warnings of more destruction and suffering, was branded “unconscionable” by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC).

PSC director Ben Jamal said a full occupation would “mean the slaughter of thousands of Palestinians and ethnic cleansing of hundreds of thousands from their land.

“Those already facing starvation, due to Israel’s blocking of aid, will now be pushed further to the brink by the full siege of the city.

“It is unconscionable that in the face of such an egregious announcement of a planned crime against humanity, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer can only muster the words that this plan is ‘wrong,’ while taking no action to stop it.

“Our government must stop arming Israel, end all military co-operation, end all trade with Israel and introduce a full body of sanctions on this genocidal state.”

Palestine supporters take to the streets as slaughter in Gaza continues

Smoke rises following Israeli bombardment on the Gaza Strip, as seen from southern Israel, October 20, 2024

THOUSANDS OF Palestine supporters took to the streets in towns and cities across Britain on Saturday in a renewed wave of anger against Israel’s continuing slaughter in Gaza.

The protests were followed a day later by at least 87 people being massacred by an Israeli air attack on the city of Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza.

Local reports say most of those killed were women and children.

With no ceasefire on the horizon and the death toll mounting across Gaza and Lebanon, Palestine support groups called for no let-up in the protests and in support for the international Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign against Israel.

In London more than 30,000 demonstrators rallied, packing Trafalgar Square and Whitehall to hear speaker after speaker vilify Israel for its genocide and the Westminster government for failing to halt the flow of weapons from Britain’s arms firms to Israel.

Elsewhere protests ranged from the Orkneys to the Isle of Wight, from small vigils and die-ins in local communities to marches in towns and cities involving many hundreds, all with the same call — an end to the slaughter.

Organisers of the London protest — who include the Palestinian Forum in Britain, Friends of Al-Aqsa, the Muslim Association of Britain, Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), and Stop the War Coalition — called for an immediate end to Israel’s attacks on Gaza and the lifting of Israel’s brutal blockade trapping over 400,000 Palestinians in northern Gaza under relentless bombardment.
