Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was re-elected leader of the right-wing Likud Party on Thursday, with the premier nominated as the party’s candidate in the upcoming legislative elections, Anadolu reports.
According to Israeli Channel 14, Netanyahu was re-elected unopposed during a meeting of the party’s Election and Oversight Committee in Tel Aviv.
Under the party’s bylaws, a candidate is automatically elected when only one nomination is submitted, without the need for a vote.
Israel’s upcoming elections are scheduled for Oct. 27, 2026.
Netanyahu has led multiple Israeli governments since first taking office in 1996.
Thursday’s decision signals Netanyahu’s intention to run again despite the ongoing corruption charges against him.
Israeli law does not require him to resign unless convicted by the Supreme Court.

The Israeli army launched a series of airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Thursday evening, shortly after warning residents to evacuate, despite a ceasefire agreement in place since November 2024, Anadolu reports.
Israeli fighter jets struck a building in Tayr Debba in the Tyre district, and another in Al-Taybeh in the Marjayoun district. Airstrikes also targeted a building in Aita al-Jabal in Bint Jbeil, and another in Zoutar al-Sharqiya in Nabatieh, the Lebanese news agency NNA reported.
No information was yet available about casualties.
Footage obtained by Anadolu and shared on social media showed powerful explosions and rising flames, and smoke following the strikes in the three towns.
According to NNA, Israeli drones flew at very low altitude over the capital, Beirut, and its southern suburbs.
The attacks came after the Israeli army ordered Lebanese residents in the three towns to evacuate before the attacks.
The army claimed that the strikes aimed to thwart Hezbollah’s attempts to rebuild its capabilities in Aita al-Jabal, al-Taybeh, and Tayr Debba.
There was no comment from Hezbollah on the Israeli attacks.
Tensions have been mounting in southern Lebanon for weeks, with the Israeli army intensifying near-daily air raids inside Lebanese territory despite the ceasefire, under the pretext of targeting Hezbollah members and infrastructure.
Israeli Channel 12 reported on Thursday that Tel Aviv is preparing for another possible round of fighting with Hezbollah.
The Israeli army has killed more than 4,000 people and injured nearly 17,000 in its attacks on Lebanon, which began in October 2023 and turned into a full-scale offensive in September 2024.

Arms control expert calls the scale of visits “a moral failing of massive proportions”.
Britain’s most senior military personnel made at least a dozen official visits to Israel during the Gaza war, newly published government data reveals.
The trips, largely unpublicised, almost entirely took place as Israeli forces barraged Gaza and international calls for an arms embargo intensified.
The scale of these visits is revealed in recent Ministry of Defence (MoD) expense records and senior staff travel disclosures covering November 2023 to March 2025.
They detail the costs of visits by officers ranked two-star and above and senior MoD civil servants, including Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton and General Sir James Hockenhull.
Together, the trips cost more than £18,000, excluding several Royal Air Force (RAF) flights recorded as “nil return.”
Action on Armed Violence (AOAV), the London-based research charity which analysed the material, found that Britain’s defence establishment maintained regular contact with Israel’s armed forces throughout the conflict.
The findings expand on Declassified’s earlier reporting, which identified five such visits as well as a meeting by Major General Zac Stenning.
These additional records show that senior British officers continued to travel to Israel well into 2025, meeting their counterparts even as accusations of war crimes mounted.

YouTube has quietly erased more than 700 videos and shut down the accounts of three major Palestinian human rights organizations, a report by The Intercept on Tuesday shows, Anadolu reports.
The deleted accounts belonged to Al‑Haq, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, and Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, all of which posted extensive footage alleging violations of international law by Israel in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
The Intercept says the video content included investigations of Israeli strikes, testimonies from survivors, and documentation of the killing of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.
The removals took place in early October, shortly after the US government imposed sanctions on the groups for their cooperation with the International Criminal Court (ICC).
YouTube confirmed the account terminations followed a review triggered by US sanctions, citing its obligation to comply with applicable trade and sanctions laws.
Human rights advocates and Palestinian groups said this move is a way to silence Palestinian voices and remove important evidence, pointing out that the organizations were not warned before their channels were deleted and that the removals focused on groups reporting rights abuses instead of extremist content.
South Africa filed a case in December 2023, accusing Israel of genocidal acts in Gaza. Several countries have since joined the proceedings, including Spain, Ireland, Libya, Mexico, Belgium, and Turkiye. The ICJ issued three provisional measures, ordering Israel to prevent genocidal acts and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.
Israel has killed nearly 69,000 people, mostly women and children, and injured over 170,000 others in attacks in Gaza since October 2023.
A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was reached on Oct. 10, based on a 20-point peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump. Israel, however, has violated the truce multiple times.

Illegal Israeli settlers staged 27 intrusions into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem last month, official data showed on Wednesday, Anadolu reports.
The Palestinian Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs said in a monthly report that Israeli forces and illegal settlers stormed the flashpoint site, performed Talmudic rituals and dances, and offered plant sacrifices within the mosque courtyards in October.
Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, along with a number of Knesset members, also raided the mosque to mark a Jewish holiday last month, the ministry said.
Since assuming his post in 2022, Ben-Gvir has forced his way into the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex 13 times, including 10 times since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2023, according to the ministry.
Al-Aqsa Mosque is the world’s third-holiest site for Muslims. Jews call the area Temple Mount, claiming it was the site of two Jewish temples in ancient times.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem, where Al-Aqsa is located, during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. It annexed the entire city in 1980 in a move never recognized by the international community.
The ministry also said that the Israeli army prevented the call to prayer at the Ibrahimi Mosque in the Old City of Hebron in the occupied West Bank 96 times last month.
According to the report, the Ibrahimi Mosque witnessed the raising of Israeli flags, provocative tours by the Israeli forces, and the placement of religious equipment, including Torah stands, wooden cutters, plastic chairs, tents, loudspeakers, and musical instruments.
Israeli attacks have escalated across the occupied West Bank since October 2023, killing more than 1,065 Palestinians and injuring nearly 10,000 others, according to Palestinian figures.
In a landmark opinion last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
