Israel released nine more Palestinians, including a woman, from the Gaza Strip after months of unlawful detention on Tuesday, Anadolu reports.
The freed captives were transported by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the central city of Deir al-Balah for medical examinations.
Speaking to reporters, ICRC spokesperson in Gaza Emani Nauk said the organization has been unable to access Palestinians held in Israeli prisons since October 2023, and called for information on the fate and whereabouts of all captives, as well as renewed access to detention facilities.
Palestinians previously released from Israeli detention have shown signs of abuse, severe malnutrition and injuries consistent with torture, according to medical staff and human rights organizations.
The releases are part of sporadic Israeli actions involving Palestinians detained from Gaza who were held for months in Israeli prisons in the absence of minimum humanitarian standards, according to documented testimonies from former detainees and rights organizations.
Former detainees have said many of those released suffer from malnutrition and injuries caused by severe physical abuse during detention.
According to the Palestinian Commission of Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoner Society, Israel has killed more than 100 prisoners and detainees since the start of the Gaza genocide, with the identities of 87 announced, while dozens of detainees from Gaza who died in custody had been subjected to enforced disappearance.
Palestinian, Israeli and international reports have repeatedly warned of the torture of Palestinians in Israeli prisons, including severe beatings, medical neglect, starvation and sexual assault.
Recently released Palestinian detainees have also reported systematic torture and cases of rape, appearing emaciated, with some showing symptoms of mental illness due to abuse.

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights has released new testimonies describing the sexual abuse of Palestinian captives by Israeli forces.
New testimonies collected by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) confirm the widespread and systematic nature of sexual abuse of Palestinian captives by Israeli forces. In a statement published on November 10, the PCHR detailed several cases of rape and other sexual assaults against both female and male prisoners, emphasizing that such violence constitutes a purposeful method within Israel’s occupation forces.
“These accounts reveal an organized and systematic practice of sexual torture, including rape, forced stripping, forced filming, sexual assault using objects and dogs, in addition to deliberate psychological humiliation aimed at crushing human dignity and erasing individual identity entirely,” the PCHR wrote.
The organization’s most recent findings reinforce what earlier publications had already documented: sexual harassment, groping, and the sexualized nature of strip searches through which Israeli soldiers routinely objectify and dehumanize Palestinian prisoners. According to the PCHR, these acts of sexual violence must be understood as part of Israel’s ongoing genocide against Palestinians, representing an attempt to inflict destruction, both physical and psychological, upon an entire people.
One of the captives interviewed by the organization, a 42-year-old woman, recounted being raped multiple times during detention, alongside relentless humiliation, beatings, and threats. “On the first day I was raped twice; on the second day I was raped twice; on the third day I remained without clothes while they looked at me through the door slit and filmed me,” she described. “I cannot describe what I felt; I wished for death every moment.”
Over the past months, the PCHR and other human rights groups have documented dozens of similar testimonies from survivors of sexual violence in Israeli prisons and camps. However, the numbers reported certainly represent only a fraction of the true scale of the crimes. Prisoners who have suffered this kind of abuse often remain silent due to the stigma still associated with sexual abuse. At the same time, restrictions imposed by occupation forces on legal visits limit the ability to collect detailed testimonies.
Even with this in mind, evidence of sexual assaults, including video recordings, has further corroborated the organization’s findings. One such video, originally broadcast by Israeli media in August 2024, showed Israeli soldiers in Sde Teiman camp raping a male prisoner with an object. The new report includes similar testimonies. An 18-year-old Gazan prisoner described being raped anally with a bottle along with other detainees. “I saw what they were doing to the others while they did it to me, and I realized it was a bottle,” he said. “There was also a dog behind us, as if the dog was raping us. They violated our dignity and destroyed our spirits and our hope for life.”
The physical and psychological toll of these assaults runs deep. Prisoners interviewed by PCHR spoke of overwhelming shame, trauma, and a sense of dehumanization. One of them, a 35-year-old man abducted from Al-Shifa Hospital in March 2024, told PCHR that he and others were collectively beaten and pepper-sprayed while he was also sexually assaulted, again involving a dog. “I suffered a severe psychological breakdown and deep humiliation,” he said. “I lost control because I could never have imagined experiencing such a thing.”
In light of the mounting testimonies of rape, sexual assault, and other forms of torture, alongside recent moves in the Knesset to expand the death penalty for Palestinians, the PCHR is calling for urgent international action to stop further Israeli crimes and to hold occupation authorities accountable.

“Genocide, ecocide, mass infanticide, rape, sexual assault, torture, slavery, sniping children, bombing hospitals, executing aid workers,” said one critic. “We are funding an endless nightmare and it should haunt us forever.”
As Israel Defense Forces bombing continued to kill and maim large numbers of Palestinians across the Gaza Strip over the weekend and into Monday, the discovery of the bodies of medical workers who were apparently executed by their captors and the publication of several reports in which Israeli soldiers admit to torturing prisoners and using civilians as human shields have drawn renewed war crimes accusations and calls for accountability.
On Sunday, the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said it had recovered the bodies of 15 Palestinian first responders from a mass grave, including eight Red Crescent workers and six Civil Defense personnel, who were killed by Israeli forces on March 23 while traveling “on duty” in five ambulances, a fire truck, and a United Nations vehicle in the al-Hashashin area of southern Gaza.
Jonathan Whittall, head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Gaza, said Sunday that the vehicles were picked off “one by one.”
“Their bodies were gathered and buried in this mass grave,” Whittall added. “We’re digging them out with uniforms, with their gloves on. They were here to save lives. Instead, they ended up in a mass grave.”
The IFRC condemns the killing of eight Palestine Red Crescent Society medics in Gaza.We are heartbroken. These dedicated humanitarians, killed while responding to the wounded, should have been protected. We mourn their loss and stand with the Palestine Red Crescent.Full statement: bit.ly/427LXxp
The Gaza Health Ministry said that “some of these bodies were bound and shot in the chest” before being “buried in a deep hole to prevent their identification.”
Accusing Israel of a “heinous crime,” the ministry called on U.N. agencies “and relevant international bodies to conduct an urgent investigation into these crimes and hold the occupation accountable for committing them.”
Genocide, ecocide, mass infanticide, rape, sexual assault, torture, slavery, sniping children, bombing hospitals, executing aid workers.
Israel has committed every atrocity imaginable these past 18 months.
We are funding an endless nightmare and it should haunt us forever.
An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson said troops opened fire on the convoy because it was “advancing suspiciously” toward their position.
“Following an initial assessment, it was determined that the forces had eliminated a Hamas military operative, Mohammad Amin Ibrahim Shubaki, who took part in the October 7 massacre, along with eight other terrorists from Hamas and the Islamic Jihad,” the spokesperson claimed.
Israeli officials routinely claim—often with little or no evidence—that Palestinian first responders, United Nations workers, journalists, and other civilians that it kills are members of Hamas or other militant resistance groups.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said in a statement Sunday that it is “outraged” by the killings, which it called “the single most deadly attack on Red Cross Red Crescent workers anywhere in the world since 2017.”
“After seven days of silence and having access denied to the area of Rafah where they were last seen, the bodies of ambulance officers Mostafa Khufaga, Saleh Muamer, and Ezzedine Shaath and first responder volunteers Mohammad Bahloul, Mohammed Al-Heila, Ashraf Abu Labda, Raed Al Sharif, and Rifatt Radwan were retrieved today,” the statement noted. “Ambulance officer Assad Al-Nassasra is still missing.”
Absolutely barbaric. According to the Red Crescent, Israel handcuffed the first responders, executed them in cold blood and then threw them in a mass grave. https://t.co/ItdAjpL2B8
Noting that at least 30 Red Crescent workers and volunteers have been killed by Israeli forces during the war, IFRC secretary general Jagan Chapagain said: “I am heartbroken. These dedicated ambulance workers were responding to wounded people. They were humanitarians. They wore emblems that should have protected them; their ambulances were clearly marked. They should have returned to their families; they did not.”
“Even in the most complex conflict zones, there are rules,” Chapagain stressed. “These rules of international humanitarian law could not be clearer—civilians must be protected; humanitarians must be protected. Health services must be protected.”
“Our network is in mourning, but this is not enough,” he added. “Instead of another call on all parties to protect and respect humanitarians and civilians, I pose a question: When will this stop? All parties must stop the killing, and all humanitarians must be protected.”
Journalist Mohammad Alsaafin compared the killings to last year’s IDF massacre of 6-year-old Hind Rajab, five of her relatives, and two PRCS medics who rushed to the site of the attack in a doomed bid to rescue the wounded child after she called for help.
This is the Hind Rajab nightmare all over again. Red Crescent rescuers sent on a mission to rescue people wounded in an Israeli attack are themselves killed by Israeli forces. https://t.co/IZdBjvErSi
On Sunday, the British newspaper The Independent published an investigation into alleged Israeli torture of Palestinians detained at facilities including Ofer Prison in the illegally occupied West Bank and the notorious Sde Teiman base in the Negev Desert.
The report begins:
Handcuffed and cowering on the floor of a cell in a military base in southern Israel, the Palestinian found himself surrounded by five soldiers. Armed with dogs, the five reservists allegedly kicked, punched, and stamped on the man as he lay on the ground. Continuing their assault, they are accused of attacking him with Taser guns and sharp objects, sexually abusing him with these instruments. At one point, the soldiers allegedly stabbed him so hard that they pierced his buttocks and anus. The brutal alleged assault left the man hospitalized with a punctured lung, cracked ribs, and a tear in his rectum needing surgery for a stoma. He had not been charged with any crime.
The Independent noted details regarding some of the dozens of Palestinian detainees who have died in Israeli custody. The IDF is currently conducting its own probe into the deaths of at least 36 Sde Teiman prisoners, including one who died after allegedly being sodomized with an electric baton.
“The fact that we see some signs of abuse means that this is probably the tip of the iceberg,” said one Israeli physician who has overseen multiple autopsies on dead detainees.

In an anonymous testimony leaked to The Independent, one Sde Teiman guard described a prevailing attitude of “Yes, they need to be beaten, it must be done.”
“We began looking for opportunities to do so,” the soldier said, adding that when he spoke out against the beating of one detainee, he was told, “Shut up, you leftist, these are Gazans, these are terrorists, what’s wrong with you?”
One former Sde Teiman detainee said that “every meter you moved, they beat you, they hit you, they insulted you; they used dogs, tear gas, and electric shock.”
IDF troops and veterans who were posted at Sde Teiman have provided similar details about “Israel’s Abu Ghraib,” a reference to the U.S. torture prison outside Baghdad during the Iraq War. Israeli doctors and medics have described forced starvation and 24-hour shackling so severe that prisoners have had limbs amputated.
A number of Sde Teiman guards were arrested last year following the leak of a video allegedly showing them raping a Palestinian detainee. The arrests outraged far-right Israelis, a mob of whom stormed Sde Teiman in a failed bid to free the accused guards.
As The Independent noted, “Among those held in [Israeli] detention are many of Gaza’s healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, and paramedics.” Some of these prisoners have died in custody, including the renowned surgeon Dr. Adnan al-Bursh, who may have been raped to death, according toFrancesca Albanese, the U.N. special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967.
Israel arrested the director of Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital in December. Since then, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya has been subjected to intense forms of torture and held in Israeli prisons with “no legal justification.” pic.twitter.com/iio2V9Uo4U
Earlier this month, an independent U.N. panel found that Israel has “systematically” used reproductive, sexual, and other forms of gender-based violence against Palestinian men, women, and children during the war.
The IDF has responded to these and other allegations by claiming it “operates in accordance with international law.”
However, the International Criminal Court last year issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant—who ordered a “complete siege” of Gaza blamed for deadly starvation and disease there—for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Israel is also the subject of an ongoing International Court of Justice genocide case brought by South Africa.
Also on Sunday, Haaretz, Israel’s oldest newspaper, published a piece by an anonymous Israel soldier who said that “in Gaza, almost every IDF platoon keeps a human shield.”
“We operate a sub-army of slaves,” the soldier said, describing how innocent Palestinians are used to check buildings for Hamas fighters or booby traps before IDF troops enter.
“I recently saw that the IDF’s Military Police Criminal Investigation Division opened six investigations into the use of Palestinian civilians as human shields, and my jaw dropped,” he wrote. “I’ve seen cover-ups before, but this is a new low.”
The IDF’s thoroughly documented use of noncombatants as human shields stands in start contrast with mostly baseless claims of Hamas using Palestinian civilians in such a manner.
The new reports come as Israeli forces continued their assault on Gaza. Health and medical officials in Gaza said at least 41 Palestinians were killed in airstrikes throughout the strip on Monday, the second day of the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr. This followed the killing of at least 64 Palestinians across Gaza on Sunday.
Approximately 1,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since Israel resumed its assault on the embattled coastal enclave on March 18, including hundreds of children. Israel’s 542-day annihilation of Gaza has left more than 175,000 Palestinians dead, wounded, or missing since October 7, 2023, when Hamas led the deadliest-ever attack on Israel.

Editor’s note: This article was commissioned by the Guardian US as part of its Rise against fascism series, which was published in September. It was spiked by editor-in-chief Katherine Viner following a disagreement about the author’s use of the term “holocaust” to describe Israel’s actions in Gaza – the Guardian suggested she amend it to “genocide” and she refused. The context of the incident is documented in this report.
Novara Media has decided to publish the piece in full, including the term “holocaust”, following consultation with several scholars of genocide and Jewish history.
The author spells her name in lower case.
Content note: This piece contains explicit references to torture and sexual assault.
United Nations Resolution 3379 defined Zionism as “a form of racism” because at its core it is a supremacist ideology that seeks to privilege Jews at the expense, even detriment and demise, of non-Jews (the resolution passed in 1975 and was revoked in 1991 following pressure from Israel and the United States). Regardless of how one defines Zionism, it manifests, among other myriad ways, in the subjugation or displacement of indigenous Palestinians.
For the past 12 months, Israel has been implementing a long-held colonial fantasy of not only “finishing the job,” but doing so with a gleeful sadism that echos the social media posts of Tzipi Navon, Sara Netanyahu’s close advisor and office manager, who called for residents from Gaza who participated in the [7 October] massacre to be tortured live on broadcast television: “First removing the nails from the hands and feet … cut off [their] genitals and let [them] see [their testicles] fried in canola oil and [force them] to eat them … Keep the tongue to the end, so that it pleases us with its screams, the ears so that [they] can hear [their] own screams and the eyes so that [they] can see us smile.”
Polling data from Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies suggests that a majority of Jewish Israelis do not think that soldiers accused of torturing Palestinians should face criminal charges.
In a rare moment of candour, the New York Times reported UN findings of systematic torture, including sexual torture. According to the UN’s report, Israeli soldiers have allegedly kept Palestinian captives in severely overcrowded prison cells, subjected them to sleep deprivation and forced nudity, threatened them with gang-rape, and penetrated or electrocuted male and female prisoners’ genitals and anuses with electrified batons and other objects. Released Palestinian hostages and Palestinian civilians in Gaza have reported being mauled and sexually assaulted by trained dogs. A lawyer who has been granted rare access to a Palestinian captive inside an Israeli detention centre reported the activation of a fire extinguisher inside the body of a 27-year-old man through a hose inserted into his rectum.
Many of those who were kidnapped, including prominent surgeons such as Dr Adnan Al-Bursh, director of the orthopaedic department at Al-Shifa Hospital, may have died after torture. Some emerged from Israeli gulags with such trauma that they have reportedly suffered memory loss; some were unable to speak; all of them broken by unspeakable torment in Israeli captivity. And they were the lucky ones who got out.

“This is both about the Kolkata doctor who was brutalized and every woman who has faced sexual violence or harassment in the country,” said one protester.
Indian doctors and healthcare workers on Saturday ramped up a nationwide strike in response to the rape and murder of a trainee physician in a state-run hospital in Kolkata, shutting down all hospital services except for emergency care in a bid to force action to protect women from sexual assault.
The August 9th murder of the 31-year-old doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata sparked massive demonstrations that began Monday and continued throughout the week. On Wednesday, protesters at a “Reclaim the Night” march attacked the hospital where the woman was killed. Protests also took place in cities including Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Pune.
Saturday’s strike, which was organized by the Indian Medical Association, is set to last for 24 hours, during which all treatment in government hospitals and outpatient clinics has been canceled. The IMA condemned the “crime of barbaric scale and the lack of safe spaces for women” in the world’s most populous nation.
“This is both about the Kolkata doctor who was brutalized and every woman who has faced sexual violence or harassment in the country,” one Kolkata protester toldThe Guardian. Other demonstrators in the West Bengal capital shouted slogans including, “We want justice,” “Enough is enough,” and “Hands that heal shouldn’t bleed.”
Hospitals and clinics across India turned away patients except for emergency cases as medical professionals went on strike for 24 hours in protest the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata https://t.co/33Ax1GiA93pic.twitter.com/8EQJ2Is7Ye
“We don’t feel safe,” Antara Das, a medical student who joined the Kolkata protest, told Al Jazeera. “If this happened inside a hospital that is second home to us, where are we safe now?”
Indian physicians called for the implementation of the Central Protection Act, a proposed law meant to shield healthcare workers from violence.
“We just want to be safe while we are doing our duty,” Sapna Rani, a 27-year-old female doctor in New Delhi, told Al Jazeera.
One man has been arrested in connection with the doctor’s rape and murder. According to the Indian Express, the suspect’s wife filed multiple complaints with police accusing him of assault, including while she was pregnant. The suspect is reportedly a “civic volunteer” who worked closely with police.
In stark contrast to the nationwide protests, local police and the principal at the victim’s medical college, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, claimed the murdered doctor, who was sleeping in the hospital’s seminar hall when she was attacked, killed herself.
Ghosh then claimed that the victim—who was found bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and genitals, and who had extensive traumatic injuries to her body—was still to blame for her own death.
“It was irresponsible of the girl to go to the seminar hall alone at night,” he said, according to The Wire.
Ghosh was interrogated Saturday by India’s Central Bureau of Investigation. Earlier in the week, he tendered his resignation from R.G. Kar. Instead of accepting his resignation, the government transferred him to serve as principal of Calcutta National Medical College, where students staged a protest against the move.
India Today reported Saturday that the West Bengal government has canceled Ghosh’s transfer.
