    THE Labour Party delegation that visited Denmark recently came back with the sense that the Scandinavian country’s mix of an eroding social democratic welfare system combined with a “muscular” immigration policy was a perfect fit for contemporary Britain.

    And, in the imagination of many Labour MPs — those equally afeard of their electorates and of the No 10 disciplinary culture — this will tackle their most pressing fear, that a combination of Labour (and Keir Starmer’s) unpopularity with the appeal of Nigel Farage’s latest vehicle will see them jobless.

    The idea that appeasing those voters in the grip of the delusion that restricting the rights of refugees is the key to solving Britain’s immigration problems will claw back electoral credibility has induced a paralysis.

    Even the dimmest knows that Labour’s problems are deeper than this but they think this surrender to a primitive nativism is a quick fix.

    This is dressed up in the usual self-flattering language that is standard when Labour politicians surrender before a reactionary idea.

    Far from Britain having “a proud tradition of welcoming those fleeing danger,” our country has a long tradition of receiving them with reluctance and hostility. There is not a Jewish family that does not have tales of hostility to their families fleeing eastern Europe, and of Holocaust survivors refused settlement both here and in Palestine. Migrants fleeing the empire to fill jobs in Britain faced no less hostility and discrimination.

    Where the lie is made explicit is in Mahmood’s framing of the issue, that our “generosity is drawing illegal migrants across the Channel.”

    Jewish campaigners condemn Starmer’s claim that demonstrations against genocide are ‘un-British’

    JEWISH campaigners have condemned Sir Keir Starmer’s “insulting” claim that demonstrations against genocide were “un-British.”

    The Prime Minister’s remarks, made today, came ahead of several student protests on the anniversary of October 7, and the national march for Palestine this weekend.

    An inter-university march set off in the capital from King’s College at 2pm, before passing the London School of Economics, University College London and ending at the gates of SOAS.

    Joining them was Mark Etkind, the son of a Holocaust survivor, who said: “As we speak today, weapons made in Britain are contributing to the deaths of children and others in Gaza — that has to stop now in order to save those lives, so these brave student protesters have to keep demonstrating until that genocide stops.”

    He accused the government of having slandered the students, making them out to be insensitive to October 7, “while ignoring the obvious fact that their priority is to … oppose the ongoing conflict which Britain unfortunately is complicit in.”

    Rallies also took place in Sheffield, Glasgow and Edinburgh, where the institution’s principal emailed students warning them to “think carefully about their actions” ahead of the protest.

    Edinburgh’s Justice for Palestine Society called it a “blatant attempt to suppress campus discourse on an ongoing genocide.”

    Writing in the Times, Sir Keir said it was “un-British to have so little respect for others,” echoing comments made by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, who described Palestine protests held following Thursday’s attack on a Manchester synagogue as “fundamentally un-British.”

    Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi, media officer for Jewish Voice for Liberation, said: “Those who protest are in despair at our government’s abject failure to take any kind of meaningful action to make the bombing, shooting, burning and starvation stop.

    “For leaders of that government to accuse protesters of ‘un-Britishness’ is both insulting and counterproductive.

    Statement by Stop the War Coalition on the right to protest

    Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Prime Minister Keir Starmer are seeking to weaponise the situation to ramp up the attack on the Palestine movement, with talk of “repeated protests” being a drain on police resources, the Stop the War Coalition has said.

    In response to the home secretary’s announcement of plans to crack down on pro-Palestine protests, Stop the War convenor Lindsey German said:

    “Stop the War is alarmed that the UK government intends to introduce greater restrictions on the right to protest in the wake of the appalling attack at the Manchester synagogue.

    “It defies logic for the Home Secretary to suggest that there should be limits placed on how often people can protest against a genocide that has been waged on the people of Gaza for two years.

    “Marches organised by the Palestine coalition, which Stop the War is a part of, have been attended by hundreds of thousands of people, and we believe they are representative of majority public opinion in this country which wants to see an end to the suffering of the Palestinian people.

    “We condemn the attack on the Manchester synagogue, just as we condemn recent attacks on mosques and hotels accommodating asylum seekers.

    “We wholeheartedly reject the implication that our peaceful marches are in any way responsible for the attack.

    “Stop the War has never conflated Israel’s illegal actions with the British Jewish community and will continue to vociferously oppose any attempt to do so.

    “Our movement is multi-ethnic, peaceful and opposed to all forms of racism, including antisemitism and Islamophobia.

    “Thousands of Jewish people have taken part in our demonstrations, many as part of an organised block, and will continue to do so.

    “The Palestine coalition has already faced more severe restrictions on our right to assemble and protest than any other protest group, and we oppose any attempts by the government to intensify this.

    “The right to protest is fundamental in any democratic society and must be defended – we will be working with others to do this in the coming months.

    “We call on all our supporters to join the Palestine coalition on the streets of London next Saturday (11 October) for what will be the thirty-second national demonstration for Palestine.

    “This will be another massive mobilisation of support for the Palestinians, but also an expression of our absolute commitment to defend the right to protest.”

    Campaigners condemned government’s plan to give police new powers to crack down on protests

    CAMPAIGNERS have condemned the government’s mounting authoritarianism after it was announced yesterday that police will be granted new powers to crack down on protests.

    The measures follow a mass demonstration in support of proscribed campaign group Palestine Action in which nearly 500 people were arrested in central London on Saturday for peacefully holding signs.

    The government plans to amend sections 12 and 14 of the Public Order Act 1986 so that police can consider the “cumulative impact” of protests.

    Under the changes, police could instruct organisers to hold protests elsewhere if a site has seen repeated demonstrations.

    Ms Mahmood said that “large repeated protests can leave sections of our country, particularly religious communities, feeling unsafe” and that this was evident in the Jewish community.

    On Friday she called for pro-Palestine protesters to “step back” from demonstrations following an attack on a Manchester synagogue in which two people were killed the day before.

    Yesterday Stop the War accused the government of weaponising the attack to ramp up its crackdown on the Palestine movement.

    The group’s convener, Lindsey German, said: “We condemn the attack on the Manchester synagogue, just as we condemn recent attacks on mosques and hotels accommodating asylum-seekers.
