Israel has not allowed the agreed-upon number of medical aid trucks into Gaza under October’s ceasefire deal, and has yet to give approval to thousands of people on waiting lists to receive treatment elsewhere.

With the Israeli military having violated its “ceasefire” agreement with Hamas at least 875 times since it was finalized in October, and aid groups warning that everyone in Gaza remains at risk of starvation, the exclave’s healthcare system desperately needs to treat people impacted by the ongoing humanitarian disaster—but medical experts there warn Israel’s blockade has left many hospitals barely functioning.

On Tuesday, the director-general of Gaza’s Ministry of Health, Munir al-Barsh, told Al Jazeera that the healthcare system is suffering from “widespread shortages of medicines and medical supplies, particularly surgical consumables needed to perform operations.”

The situation is “tragic and horrific,” al-Barsh told the outlet.

After Israeli attacks on nearly all of Gaza’s healthcare facilities during the war, 34 hospitals and 125 other health centers have been badly damaged. The health system has lost about 1,700 medical professionals who were killed by the Israel Defense Forces, and at least 80 doctors and other providers have been detained by Israel since 2023.

About 70% of the aid trucks that Israel has allowed into Gaza since October have carried food; the other 30% have brought in a variety of medical equipment, shelter supplies, tents, clothings, and other items. Israel is failing to allow in the agreed-upon number of medical aid trucks, Al Jazeera reported.

Earlier this month, al-Barsh told Al Jazeera that the medical supplies allowed in remain limited, with “antibiotics, IV solutions, and surgical materials” banned.

“We are facing a situation in which 54% of essential medicines are unavailable, and 40% of the drugs for surgeries and emergency care—the very medications we rely on to treat the wounded—are missing,” al-Barsh said.

Dr. Alaa Helles, director of pharmaceutical care at the Ministry of Health, also said Sunday that 52% of medications on an “essential list” were “zero stock.”

On Tuesday, al-Barsh added that three-quarters of the total supplies needed in hospitals are unavailable, while power outages and shortages of generators are making it nearly impossible for healthcare workers to help critically injured and ill people.

He said Israel must open border crossings both to allow more supplies in and to permit the transport of thousands of people who are on long waiting lists to receive treatment outside of Gaza.

Nearly 20,000 Palestinians in Gaza are on the lists, including 18,500 who have received approval from the World Health Organization but have yet to be referred by Israeli authorities for security approval. About 3,700 of those on waiting lists are in critical condition and about 4,300 are childrenAl Jazeera reported.

Al-Barsh told the outlet that at least 1,156 patients have died while waiting for security clearance from Israel.

The director-general’s comments came a day after the United Nations issued a similar warning about the thousands of people waiting for treatment outside of Gaza and the “destruction of health infrastructure” in the exclave.

“My daughter is ill and suffers from kidney failure,” a mother named Balqees Abu Ajwa told the UN News Center. “The crossings are closed and medical supplies are scarce. The medical equipment that could help my daughter stay alive is not available. My daughter has been in this condition for 20 days. She is exhausted.”

American teenager Mohammed Ibrahim [AJEnglish/X]

American teenager Mohammed Ibrahim has been released nine months after Israeli forces detained him during a nighttime raid in the occupied West Bank, according to statements shared Thursday by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Anadolu reports.

Sixteen-year-old Ibrahim was arrested on Feb. 16 when Israeli forces reportedly entered his family’s home in al-Mazra’a ash-Sharqiya in the occupied West Bank.

His family said that Ibrahim was subjected to beatings, starvation, and other mistreatment while held in an Israeli military prison.

“Mohammed should have spent this year studying for his learner’s permit and enjoying time with his family—not locked in a military prison, beaten, starved, and terrified. His release is cause for celebration, but it must also be a turning point. The U.S. cannot continue providing unchecked support to a government that tortures American children,” said CAIR Florida on US social media company X.

While CAIR National welcomed his release, they emphasized the importance of taking action to prevent such treatment of a teenager.

“Mohammed’s homecoming is a blessing, but it does not erase the torture and suffering he endured,” it said, adding: “The U.S. government has a responsibility to investigate Israel’s abuse of an American citizen and ensure that no other child—American or Palestinian—is subjected to the same treatment.”

His uncle, Zeyad Kadur, in a statement, said the family is relieved after months of fear.

“Words can’t describe the immense relief we have as a family right now, to have Mohammed in his parents’ arms,” he said, adding that they are focused on securing medical care after “Israel’s abuse and inhumane conditions for months.”

Urging the “American government to protect our families,” Kadur said: “Mohammed was forced to spend his 16th birthday unjustly imprisoned by Israel, separated from the people who love him. Now that Mohammed is with his family, we can finally wish him a happy birthday.”

Civilians in El Fasher, Sudan face “slow, deliberate death under the RSF siege”

Destruction in El Fasher, Sudan. Photo: Resistance Committees

After running out of animal fodder, people are now consuming cow skin as a last resort against starvation in North Darfur state’s besieged capital, cut off from all food supply by a 57-km wall the paramilitary has built around the city.

Walled in by war-torn Sudan’s paramilitary, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), over two hundred thousand civilians in North Darfur state’s besieged capital El Fasher “have nothing left but resistance and a collective death,” warned the city’s Resistance Committees (RC)*.

Traders report having completely run out of food supplies as famine closes in on the malnourished population, cut off from food aid since the RSF laid siege on the city in April 2024 to oust the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) from its last foothold in the Darfur region.

There were “only some secret points to enter and exit the city”, through which small quantities of food supplies were being smuggled through the siege, reportedly with the collaboration of some RSF troops, said Saleh Osman, President of the Darfur Bar Association.

However, severe shortages and hoarding meant that grains were sold at prices multiple times higher than before the war started in April 2023. Unable to afford, most people were surviving on small portions of porridge made from kora ambaz – a type of animal fodder left behind after extracting oil from peanuts.

Unsafe for long-term human consumption, it had nevertheless become a staple of last resort for the survival of El Fasher’s residents. Now, however, the “ambaz is gone too”, the RC said in a statement on October 14.

Total siege

The earthen wall that the RSF started building around the city this May to totalize its siege is reportedly complete, 57 km long, leaving little or no opening for food or any other essentials to be smuggled in.

“El Fasher is now effectively under siege from all directions,” Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, said in a briefing on Wednesday, October 15. With the “earthen barriers around the city… preventing movement of both people and supplies”, the city’s markets, which have been repeatedly bombed by the RSF, “are largely empty”.

The little amount of grain left in the city is priced beyond reach. “A kilo of rice costs 450,000 Sudanese pounds” – over USD 748 – said Adam Rojal, spokesperson of the General Coordination of Darfur Displaced People and Refugees. Early this month, even the cost of a 50-kilo sack of ambaz had reached 2 million Sudanese pounds, over USD 3,300.

The last of the community kitchens, which Dujarric described as the “last line of support”, closed down on October 11. “People are now eating cow skin to survive”, the RC said, posting a video of a resident roasting the animal hide over an open fire. “This is not just hunger. It’s a slow, deliberate death under the RSF siege.”

Famine – which first broke out in August 2024 in displaced people’s camps on the outskirts of El Fasher – is fast closing in on the city where about 260,000 residents, including 130,000 children, remain trapped, awaiting death by starvation, if they are not killed by the RSF first.

The smell of death now fills the streets

Composed of the Janjaweed militias organized by the SAF to commit mass atrocities during the civil war in Darfur in the 2000s, the RSF has ethnically cleansed several areas in the other four states of Darfur that it has taken over.

In over 250 attacks on El Fasher, the RSF has already killed hundreds in shelling. “The shells pour down like rain, not distinguishing between a sleeping child or a mother pleading to the heavens to protect her children,” the RC said after the intense bombardment of the city on October 3.

“The smell of death now fills the streets, blood washes over the pavements, homes are destroyed on top of their inhabitants, markets have been reduced to ashes, and bodies are being pulled from beneath the rubble – without names, without faces, only numbers in a long record of massacres.” Hundreds of bodies remain in the rubble of residential neighborhoods struck by drones.

Chemical weapons used?

The following day, on October 4, RSF drones dropped projectiles emitting a “strange and strong” smelling gas, after inhaling which several were rushed to hospitals, vomiting, convulsing, and hallucinating. “All signs point to the use of internationally banned gases or chemical agents,” the RC said.

Later on the night of October 7, RSF shelled the hospital multiple times, killing at least 13 and wounding sixteen others, including medics. The shelling destroyed several wards in one of the last remaining hospitals in El Fasher.

“No aid planes, no humanitarian bridge, no genuine international action”

“After over 500 days of unremitting siege by the RSF and incessant fighting, El Fasher is on the precipice of an even greater catastrophe if urgent measures are not taken to loosen the armed vice upon the city and to protect civilians,” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned earlier this month.

“The international community – led by the United Nations – continues to speak in the language of proposals without action. The UN proposal to deliver humanitarian aid by air to Al-Fasher has been awaited far too long, at a time when waiting is no longer an option – because people are dying of hunger now,” the RC complained.

“No aid planes, no humanitarian bridge, no genuine international action, no ground movement to lift the siege,” it lamented. “We cry for help and no one answers… We see our city being erased and we die resisting, because we have nothing left but resistance and a collective death in the silence of the world.”

*Organized in localities across Sudan’s cities, the Resistance Committees comprise a decentralized network of youth activists. It spearheaded the mass pro-democracy protests against the military junta before its components – the SAF and the RSF – turned on each other, hurling Sudan into a civil war in April 2023. Since the war, the Committees have been at the forefront of coordinating and organizing relief, rescue and defense of stranded civilians.

UN says at least 562 aid workers killed in Gaza in nearly 2 years

At least 562 aid workers have been killed in Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, the UN said on Friday, following the death of another aid worker in an Israeli strike a day earlier, Anadolu reports.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters that a staff member from Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) was killed in a strike on Deir al-Balah, which also seriously injured four others while the team was waiting for a bus to go to an MSF hospital.

“This was the 14th staff member from Medecins Sans Frontieres to have been killed in Gaza since the start of this conflict on October 7,” Dujarric added.

MSF identified the victim as Omar Hayek, 42, an occupational therapist who had worked with the group since 2018.

“All staff were wearing MSF vests, clearly identifying them as medical humanitarian workers,” it said, expressing “deep sorrow and outrage” over his killing.

He also relayed figures from the UN humanitarian office. “OCHA warns that since that date (Oct. 7), at least 562 aid workers have been killed, including some in the line of duty. That includes 376 UN staff members,” he said.

“On the ground, our humanitarian colleagues warned that the situation in northern Gaza continues to rapidly deteriorate. Military operations and heavy strikes hitting residential areas and buildings are driving up the death toll and continue to wreak havoc on the area,” Dujarric said.

The Israeli army has killed over 66,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in Gaza following a cross-border attack by Hamas on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. The relentless bombardment has rendered the enclave all but uninhabitable and led to starvation and the spread of disease.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.

Israel kills 100 Palestinians every day in Gaza: UN refugee agency

The Israeli army kills an average of 100 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip daily, in addition to those dying of starvation and lack of medical care, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) said on Wednesday, Anadolu reports.

“On average, 100 people are reported killed every day in Gaza due to the Israeli military operation or shootings at the ‘Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’ food points. Meanwhile, others die of hunger or lack of medical care.”

UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said in a statement on US social media company X.

Israel has killed over 66,100 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in Gaza since October 2023. The relentless bombardment has rendered the enclave uninhabitable and led to a famine.

On May 27, Israel launched a separate aid distribution scheme through the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), bypassing the UN and international humanitarian agencies.

Since then, nearly 2,600 people have been killed and 19,000 others injured by Israeli fire while collecting aid at distribution points.

“The growing death toll is fueling a growing indifference,” Lazzarini said, calling for documenting the ongoing Israeli crimes in the Gaza Strip.

“The suffering must be heard and attended to,” he said, renewing his call for an immediate ceasefire.

Separately, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reiterated support for UNRWA’s efforts to help Palestinian refugees in various areas, especially in Gaza. This came during his meeting with Lazzarini on the sidelines of the Munich Leaders Meeting in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

According to a Foreign Ministry readout, Abdelatty stressed the importance of continuing to provide financial and political support for the UN agency.

He called on the international community “to pressure Israel to allow UNRWA’s relief convoys into Gaza, especially in light of the famine that the Gaza Strip is facing as a result of Israeli starvation policies.”

In October 2024, following claims by the Israeli government that some UNRWA staff were allegedly involved in attacks on Oct. 7, 2023, Israel blocked UNRWA operations in the West Bank and Gaza after a Knesset vote.

UNRWA, founded in the aftermath of the 1948 Palestinian Nakba, also known as the Catastrophe, provides aid to approximately 5.9 million Palestinians across five main regions: Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon.
