Lebanese government calls the killings a ‘blatant war crime’ while Israel says primary target was a Hezbollah ‘terrorist’
A funeral has taken place in Lebanon for three journalists killed by an Israeli strike on Saturday, after the Lebanese government called the killings a “blatant war crime”.
Ali Shoeib, of the Hezbollah-owned al-Manar television station, and Fatima Ftouni and her brother and cameraman Mohammed Ftouni, of the pro-Hezbollah outlet al-Mayadeen, were killed in the strike targeting their car.
Israel claimed the attack shortly afterwards, saying the target was Shoeib, whom it accused of being a Hezbollah “terrorist” in an intelligence unit who had reported on the locations of Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military provided no further evidence to support the claim and made no comment on the deaths of the other journalists.
Hundreds of people attended the funeral, where the bodies of Shoeib and Fatima Ftouni were draped in their channels’ logos and with bouquets of flowers.
…
Shoeib was a well-known war correspondent in Lebanon, where he reported for al-Manar for nearly three decades. His death was met with a wave of condolences from audiences and journalists in Lebanon, many of whom said he was considered a mentor figure in Lebanese journalism.
Fatima Ftouni had also been reporting from the frontlines of the Israel-Hezbollah war in recent days, filming in front of battles in the town of Taybeh, south Lebanon. Her own family had been killed in Israeli strikes weeks earlier.
Eighteen months earlier, she and her colleagues were struck by an Israeli bomb while they were sleeping in a hotel in south Lebanon. Ftouni survived but two of her colleagues did not. Commenting on the deaths of her colleagues at the time, Ftouni said: “It is the silence of the international community that let this happen.”

Leader of the Greek dockworkers’ union ENEDEP, Markos Bekris, is facing prosecution for a solidarity action that blocked ammunition bound for Israel.
One year after dockworkers at the port of Piraeus blocked an ammunition shipment bound for Israel, their union leader, Markos Bekris, is being targeted by Greek authorities for this show of solidarity. News of Bekris facing legal prosecution came shortly after his return from the West Bank, where a delegation from the All-Workers’ Militant Front (PAME) traveled to express support for Palestinian workers and trade unions.
“It is evident that this genuine act of internationalist solidarity [the cargo blockade] has provoked the reflexes of the state and the government, which – within the framework of their strategic alliance with the murderous state of Israel – are resorting to baseless accusations to justify his prosecution,” stated the Communist Party of Greece (KKE).
In the days that followed the news, expressions of support poured from dozens of trade unions. “The wave of solidarity that has appeared in the face of the prosecution is very strong,” journalist Vangelis Ilias told Peoples Dispatch. “Every day since the announcement, there have been reactions,” he says, linking this to the widespread support for Palestine among the population.
When members of the dockworkers’ union ENEDEP blocked the military cargo in October 2024, Ilias explains, they acted in line with this popular sentiment. “There were a lot of people and a lot of energy during the port action,” he says, noting that students and community groups joined dockworkers on the picket line. “It was truly a working-class-led moment.”
The government’s response: from silence to aggression
The authorities’ recent response to the action again exposed the divide between public opinion and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s administration. Throughout Israel’s genocide in Gaza, the government has maintained close ties with Israeli authorities despite ongoing demands to sever these links. As solidarity actions grew stronger, authorities shifted from silence to aggression. “One of the latest examples of this escalation happened during the Palestine solidarity mobilization in October,” Ilias says. “It was like they were sending a message that they would allow things to go up to a certain point, but not cross it. Attacks on ENEDEP’s leadership can be seen as part of the same message and crackdown.”
Legal action against Bekris has been widely understood as an attempt to suppress solidarity actions which have very concrete outcomes. Additionally, PAME argued in its reaction that the government’s declared commitment to “justice” should also be interpreted as part of the militarization trends shaping both Greece and the region. “If the Greek government and its so-called ‘justice’ are so eager to drag people into court, they should start with their friend Netanyahu, who is internationally wanted for war crimes,” the organization wrote. “They should leave alone the workers and trade unionists who stand by the peoples, on the right side of history, who stop the bullets bound for the murder of children.”
Trade unions from other countries also condemned the intimidation attempts against ENEDEP. “While workers are crushed under poverty, those in power criminalize trade union action and solidarity in order to serve the dirty interests of imperialism,” the Turkish trade union Nakliyat-İş wrote. Italy’s Unione Sindacale di Base (USB), which led two general strikes for Palestine, offered equally strong support. USB noted that for governments, “blocking weapons clearly intended to fuel the genocide of a people is not an act of peace, but a crime,” as it jeopardizes existing international alliances.
Palestinian labor organizations added their support for ENEDEP, saying that the Piraeus blockade embodied true values of international solidarity. “Anyone who refuses to load bullets for murderers defends life,” they stated. “Anyone who is on trial for saying no to war is on trial in the name of false justice.”
For Ilias, the support Bekris and ENEDEP gathered since the beginning of November remains the best tool for opposing the ongoing repression. “And this solidarity should go beyond statements – which are undoubtedly important – by also building physical support, including by showing up in large numbers in front of the courts,” he says.

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights has released new testimonies describing the sexual abuse of Palestinian captives by Israeli forces.
New testimonies collected by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) confirm the widespread and systematic nature of sexual abuse of Palestinian captives by Israeli forces. In a statement published on November 10, the PCHR detailed several cases of rape and other sexual assaults against both female and male prisoners, emphasizing that such violence constitutes a purposeful method within Israel’s occupation forces.
“These accounts reveal an organized and systematic practice of sexual torture, including rape, forced stripping, forced filming, sexual assault using objects and dogs, in addition to deliberate psychological humiliation aimed at crushing human dignity and erasing individual identity entirely,” the PCHR wrote.
The organization’s most recent findings reinforce what earlier publications had already documented: sexual harassment, groping, and the sexualized nature of strip searches through which Israeli soldiers routinely objectify and dehumanize Palestinian prisoners. According to the PCHR, these acts of sexual violence must be understood as part of Israel’s ongoing genocide against Palestinians, representing an attempt to inflict destruction, both physical and psychological, upon an entire people.
One of the captives interviewed by the organization, a 42-year-old woman, recounted being raped multiple times during detention, alongside relentless humiliation, beatings, and threats. “On the first day I was raped twice; on the second day I was raped twice; on the third day I remained without clothes while they looked at me through the door slit and filmed me,” she described. “I cannot describe what I felt; I wished for death every moment.”
Over the past months, the PCHR and other human rights groups have documented dozens of similar testimonies from survivors of sexual violence in Israeli prisons and camps. However, the numbers reported certainly represent only a fraction of the true scale of the crimes. Prisoners who have suffered this kind of abuse often remain silent due to the stigma still associated with sexual abuse. At the same time, restrictions imposed by occupation forces on legal visits limit the ability to collect detailed testimonies.
Even with this in mind, evidence of sexual assaults, including video recordings, has further corroborated the organization’s findings. One such video, originally broadcast by Israeli media in August 2024, showed Israeli soldiers in Sde Teiman camp raping a male prisoner with an object. The new report includes similar testimonies. An 18-year-old Gazan prisoner described being raped anally with a bottle along with other detainees. “I saw what they were doing to the others while they did it to me, and I realized it was a bottle,” he said. “There was also a dog behind us, as if the dog was raping us. They violated our dignity and destroyed our spirits and our hope for life.”
The physical and psychological toll of these assaults runs deep. Prisoners interviewed by PCHR spoke of overwhelming shame, trauma, and a sense of dehumanization. One of them, a 35-year-old man abducted from Al-Shifa Hospital in March 2024, told PCHR that he and others were collectively beaten and pepper-sprayed while he was also sexually assaulted, again involving a dog. “I suffered a severe psychological breakdown and deep humiliation,” he said. “I lost control because I could never have imagined experiencing such a thing.”
In light of the mounting testimonies of rape, sexual assault, and other forms of torture, alongside recent moves in the Knesset to expand the death penalty for Palestinians, the PCHR is calling for urgent international action to stop further Israeli crimes and to hold occupation authorities accountable.

Israel has long been a racist and fascist state that seeks to dehumanise Palestinians in every possible way. The latest stark example of this reality was the gang rape crime committed by Israeli soldiers against a Palestinian detainee in the notorious Sde Teiman military prison. Yet, what shocked the Israeli government was not the horrific assault itself, but rather the fact that the footage documenting it was leaked to the media.
In the past week, the Israeli government and military establishment have been preoccupied with blaming Major-General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, the Israeli army’s top military prosecutor, for being behind the leaked video—eventually pushing her to resign on Friday amid calls from several Israeli politicians to hold her accountable for the leak. She is also expected to face further questioning in the coming days. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu himself declared that the leak had harmed Israel’s image, describing it as the most “severe public relations attack” on Israel.
This reveals that Israel’s outrage was not over the gang rape crime itself, nor did it carry out a credible or genuine investigation to hold the perpetrators accountable. Rather, the regime’s main concern has been to discover how the footage of such a ruthless and inhumane act found its way to the public.
The leaked footage dates back to August 2024, during Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza. It shows Israeli soldiers grabbing and leading away a blindfolded Palestinian prisoner before surrounding him with riot shields to obscure the rape. The crime sparked a backlash, highlighting Israel’s brutal treatment of Palestinian prisoners, especially those arrested from Gaza during its genocidal war. Since October 2023, more than 80 Palestinian detainees have been killed in Israeli jails due to torture, abuse, and medical negligence.
In response to the leaked video, Israel announced it would conduct an investigation and detain the suspect soldiers. However, this move was nothing more than a charade – a familiar attempt to appease international outrage while ensuring that no real accountability is achieved. Not a single Israeli soldier or settler has ever faced genuine punishment for crimes against Palestinians. In fact, incidents like this only reaffirm that such assaults and abuses are systematic and often encouraged by top Israeli leadership.
Israel’s so-called justice system has long been an instrument of deception; a façade meant to convince the world that there is a functioning rule of law, but in reality, it exists to protect the occupation and those who enforce it.
The case of Shireen Abu Akleh, the Palestinian-American journalist working for Al Jazeera, is a powerful example. She was shot and killed on 11 May 2022 while covering an Israeli military raid in Jenin in the occupied West Bank. Under international pressure, Israel conducted an internal investigation that concluded the killing was “accidental” and that no criminal charges would be filed. This contradicted multiple independent journalistic investigations, which confirmed that Abu Akleh was deliberately targeted, despite wearing clear press markings.
Another case is that of Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi, a Turkish-American activist who was shot in the head in September 2024 while participating in a peaceful protest against Israeli settlements near Nablus. The Israeli military later admitted it was “highly likely” that its forces had fired the shot but described it as “indirect and unintentional.” Again, no one was held accountable.
These examples, among many others, demonstrate that Israel’s investigations into crimes against Palestinians, activists, and journalists are nothing but sham proceedings, a calculated performance to deceive global public opinion into believing there is justice in Israel. In truth, the Israeli judiciary is a political tool for maintaining the occupation and shielding its enforcers.
The Sde Teiman gang rape and the controversy over the leaked video are further evidence of the moral bankruptcy of the Israeli system, in particular its justice system. The crime and its cover-up show that the regime’s priorities are not justice, humanity, or accountability, but rather the preservation of its image and the protection of its soldiers even if they commit crimes. To the regime, the true crime was not the rape itself but the exposure of its cruelty, the tearing down of the carefully maintained façade of “Israeli democracy” and “rule of law.”
For decades, Palestinians have endured a pattern of Israeli brutality met with international silence. The complicity of Western governments and the shameful inaction of the international community have been central to this cycle. By providing unwavering diplomatic cover and blocking accountability at forums like the UN Security Council – the US administration has used its veto power at least three times in favor of Israel since October 2023; these powers have sent a clear message: Israel’s crimes carry no consequence.
The outrage in Israel over the Sde Teiman leak reveals the regime’s deepest fear: exposure. It fears the world seeing beyond its propaganda and witnessing the raw, unfiltered truth of its occupation. In this twisted system, the villain is Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, accused of leaking the video, not the soldiers who committed the gang rape. As for justice for the Palestinian victim, such a notion does not exist under Israel’s shambolic, biased, and complicit justice system.

More than one million children in Gaza are still in urgent need of food and clean water, while 650,000 remain out of school despite the ongoing ceasefire, UNICEF spokesperson Tess Ingram said on Sunday.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Ingram said that while the ceasefire agreement has stopped the daily bombardments that were killing children, “it is not enough on its own to end hunger or guarantee families access to safe drinking water.”
She warned that thousands of children in Gaza continue to go to bed hungry each night, as infrastructure critical to water, sanitation, and healthcare remains in ruins. “Families in Gaza continue to struggle daily to survive,” she said, adding that damage to essential facilities has made access to basic services “extremely difficult.”
The ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, brokered by US President Donald Trump, went into effect on 10th October. However, Israeli forces have been accused of multiple violations since then, resulting in additional Palestinian casualties and continued restrictions on humanitarian aid entering the enclave.
