UNIONS will not accept any benefit cuts that plunge the most vulnerable further into poverty, TUC general secretary Paul Nowak told GMB Congress today.

Speaking before Chancellor Rachel Reeves delivered her spending review, he told delegates in Brighton that ”if 2024 was a year of change, 2025 has to be a year of deliver, a year where the government makes good its promises to working people.”

He said the first of three priorities for the union federation this year was ”to make sure the government delivers its manifesto commitments that won it the election last year.

”I want ministers to also think again on their current plans to reform social security,” Mr Nowak said. ”Nobody unable to work should be left out of pocket and nobody in work at the moment or looking for work should see their benefits cut to balance the nation’s books.

”When it comes to social security, we cannot and will not accept the most vulnerable being plunged further into poverty.”

A stack of British one pound coins

BLACK workers are more than 50 per cent more likely to be employed on exploitative zero-hour contracts than white workers, new TUC analysis reveals.

The union body published the research showing how black workers are bearing the brunt of insecure work today as delegates gather for TUC black workers’ conference.

The analysis also found that nearly four in 10 BME (black and minority ethnic) workers are also at risk of unfair dismissal, due to having been with their employer for less than two years.

Black workers are also overrepresented in four of the five occupations with the highest number of workers on zero-hours contracts.

This is most stark in social care, where one in 15 is employed, compared to one in 50 white workers.

Protesters outside the Treasury this evening

Chancellor Reeves’ planned public spending cuts will ‘open the door’ for Reform UK, McDonnell warns as campaigners get set to rally outside the Treasury

TAX the super-rich instead of slashing services, Chancellor Rachel Reeves was told today, on the eve of her Commons statement, expected to announce more public spending cuts.

Campaigners from a range of charities and voluntary organisations are set to rally outside the Treasury this evening to demand a wealth tax instead of “austerity with a red rosette” in the words of a leading trade unionist.

And former shadow chancellor John McDonnell, presently suspended from the Labour whip, has warned that Ms Reeves was in danger of making Labour “just another austerity party” if she missed a last chance to change course.

The wealth tax option is growing in political popularity following recent announcements of a £5 billion cut in disability benefits and huge cuts to overseas aid to fund new arms spending.

It is backed by the TUC and a broad range of Labour MPs.

Just a 2.5 per cent tax on assets over £10 million could raise £36bn annually, according to Greenpeace’s research.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage attends a farmers protest in Whitehall, London, March 4, 2025

REFORM’S pro-worker mask has slipped, the TUC said today, after all its MPs joined the Tories in opposing Labour’s employment rights law.

Nigel Farage’s Commons contingent voted against the legislation despite polling showing that its main provisions are highly popular in their own constituencies.

TUC general secretary Paul Nowak said: “Reform and the Conservatives have shown their true colours once again.

“Instead of voting for common-sense reforms, like banning exploitative zero-hours contracts and day-one access to sick pay, they have voted to deny millions basic protections at work.

“Nigel Farage is not on the side of working people. He’s a political fraud, defying his own constituents to oppose stronger workers’ rights.”

People take part in the National march for Palestine in central London organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, August 3, 2024

TRADE unionists across Britain are to take part in a TUC-backed workplace day of action for Palestine next Thursday.

Workers are calling on the government to ban all arms exports, immediately recognise the state of Palestine, ban the trade in goods from illegal Israeli settlements and ensure Palestinians can access humanitarian aid.

After thousands of people took part in workplace days of action last year, workers are again being encouraged to organise acts of solidarity, which could include a two-minute silence, a stall outside their workplace, a bake sale or simply wearing the colours of the Palestinian flag.
