As Israel encroaches upon Gaza, the UN should be reckoning with its colonial complicity

“A hundred percent of Gaza should be for the Palestinian people, right? That’s what we want to see. And we’ve been calling on Israel to pull back from its occupation from the so-called yellow line and that will continue to be our position,” UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated last week.

Dujarric’s comments were uttered after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated he ordered the Israeli military to encroach further on Gaza, to 70 percent of the territory. The Yellow Line, which Dujarric mentioned, is already an expired demarcation, while the Orange Line, recently briefly making news headlines, is the physically unmarked border that will determine Israel’s entire military occupation of Gaza. Further Israeli colonial expansion has the backing of the US Board of Peace, led by Nickolay Mladenov, who has already absolved Israel from not keeping to the ceasefire terms since Hamas refused to disarm.

Since Mladenov’s narrative remained unchallenged, Netanyahu does not even have to justify Israel’s military occupation of Gaza, which sets the scene for recolonising the area.

Mladenov already warned that Hamas would be blamed for any repercussions after refusing to disarm, bringing the narrative back to the start of the genocide. For the UN, the deception works well. It allows Israel’s ongoing security narrative unlimited and unwarranted justification. Hamas takes the blame for Israel’s military occupation, and the UN maintains relevance through its humanitarian paradigm for a while longer.

UN officials can embellish their rhetoric, but their credibility has long been pulverised. If one goes back to history, as should be done, ignoring Palestinian self-determination to vote for partition in 1947 represents the foundations of the lie upon which all UN rhetoric is based. Palestine has been repeatedly throttled by the UN to pave the way for Zionist colonial encroachment.

READ: The EU’s fragmented focus rewards colonial violence

The Yellow Line, which Dujarric referred to, was only the beginning of the visible manifestation of Israel’s territorial appropriation. Calling upon Israel to pull back from the Yellow Line when military occupation has already expanded ignores the fact that Israel had already moved past the demarcation which was linked to purportedly rebuilding Gaza.

The question, therefore, is not what the UN’s spoken position is, but what lies beneath its rhetoric, which can be linked to decades of the international community’s approval and endorsement of various forms of Israeli colonial violence.

The Yellow Line and the Orange Line are not just demarcations; they are proof of Israel’s ongoing forced transfer of the Palestinian people. Genocide was the first step; military occupation of utterly destroyed territory is the second. Instead of talking about the Yellow Line, for example, can UN spokespersons and officials recognise the political implications of the Palestinian people’s forced displacement from Gaza? Can UN officials speak of Palestinians outside of the humanitarian paradigm, or as appendages to what Israel is planning for Gaza? What the UN allegedly wants is not the main issue here, and neither should it be. Palestinians are being forced out of Gaza and restricted into a humanitarian paradigm that robbed them of rights alongside land. That is what Dujarric should have addressed – the forced absence of the Palestinian people’s political agency, which facilitates ongoing colonisation, as the UN envisaged since 1947.

The UN reported on Thursday at least 49 illegal Israeli occupier attacks across the West Bank in a single week.

Citing the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said during a news conference that between May 12 and 18, Israeli occupier attacks “caused casualties or damage, including a rise in arson attacks against homes, farmland, vehicles and a mosque.”

“With this, over 870 settler attacks across more than 220 communities have caused casualties or property damage this year alone,” he said.

Dujarric addressed an Israeli High Court ruling affecting international non-governmental organizations operating in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, stressing that “international NGOs are indispensable to the overall humanitarian operations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory” and that “their work must and needs to be facilitated.”

He said humanitarians are continuing to deliver assistance in Gaza, “despite the impediments,” that have been briefed about almost daily, while warning that “essential supplies must be allowed into Gaza urgently, to avoid the risk of equipment collapsing.”

The UN on Monday warned that one in five amputees in the Gaza Strip is a child, as a critical shortage of prosthetic specialists and restricted entry of materials leave thousands without adequate care, Anadolu reports.

“On health, concerns remain over skin diseases and other medical issues linked to the presence of pests and rodents,” said UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric at a news conference, adding that more than 6,600 people need prosthetic and rehabilitation care.

“That includes thousands of people who have received amputations since October 2023, yet only eight prosthetic technicians are available to respond,” he said.

Warning that “with severe shortages of specialists and restricted entry of prosthetic materials, it could take five years or more to meet today’s needs,” Dujarric stressed that “one in five amputees is a child.”

Dujarric stressed that “international prosthetic technicians are urgently needed, as well as the unimpeded entry of prosthetic materials, which remain restricted by the Israeli authorities.”

Israel has imposed a crippling blockade on the Gaza Strip since 2007, leaving the territory’s 2.4 million people on the verge of starvation.

It launched a brutal two-year offensive on Gaza in October 2023, killing more than 72,000 people, injuring over 172,000, and causing massive destruction across the besieged territory.

UN reports nearly 95,000 child malnutrition cases in Gaza Strip in 2025

The UN on Monday warned that child malnutrition in the Gaza Strip has reached alarming levels, with nearly 95,000 cases identified in 2025 and harsh winter conditions eroding fragile humanitarian gains, Anadolu reports.

Citing the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said at a news conference that “the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip remains dire, as harsh weather conditions are jeopardizing the progress made by the humanitarian response.”

Dujarric reported that the agencies leading the nutrition response continue to detect large numbers of children in urgent need.

“Meanwhile, our humanitarian partners leading on addressing malnutrition report that last month they screened over 76,000 children and identified around 4,900 cases of acute malnutrition, including more than 820 cases of severe acute malnutrition,” he said.

He further added that “this brings the total number of acute malnutrition cases identified in 2025 to nearly 95,000.”

Noting that the UN partners provided supplies such as tents, tarpaulins and blankets to 28,000 families, Dujarric warned that “1.1 million people still urgently need help as rainstorms continue to damage and destroy many existing shelters.”

“Our partners stress that tents remain a temporary solution and more supplies, including toolkits, cement and heavy machinery to clear debris, as well as sustained funding, are needed to transition from emergency to early recovery efforts,” he added.

Highlighting the severity of the harsh weather on children, Dujarric said that “since the ceasefire and as of the year’s end, our partners were able to distribute more than 310,000 children’s winter clothing sets and more than 112,000 pairs of shoes as part of the winterization efforts.”

“They also installed 150 specialized tents across Gaza to be used as child-friendly and safe spaces,” he said.

Dujarric said that the UN’s education partners on the ground opened up 18 additional temporary learning spaces for 35,000 Gazan students, adding: “The total number of operational temporary learning spaces is now 440, accommodating around 268,000 children.”

However, he stressed that “education supplies continue to be denied entry by the Israeli authorities on the grounds that education is not a critical activity during the first phase of the ceasefire.”

“We do believe that it is a critical activity,” he affirmed, urging for “rapid, sustained and unimpeded access to allow ourselves and our partners to scale up assistance faster to prevent further deterioration and alleviate the suffering of people in Gaza.”

When asked about Israel’s continued destruction in the Gaza Strip, Dujarric said: “We want to see a stop to the destruction of whatever remains in Gaza.”

“We want to see the parties move towards phase two to try to rebuild,” he said.

A ceasefire agreement took effect in Gaza on Oct. 10 under US President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan, halting two years of Israeli attacks that have killed more than 71,000 people, mostly women and children, and injured over 171,000 since October 2023.

The UN on Monday emphasised the severely difficult situation in the Gaza Strip, as its attempts to deliver tents to those in need were repeatedly rejected, Anadolu reports.

Citing the Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric warned at a news conference that “the humanitarian situation remains very difficult, with many people struggling to access the basics they need to survive.”

Recalling the recent heavy rains in the enclave, Dujarric said the “humanitarian teams carried out a rapid assessment of impacted areas over the weekend and provided some initial aid.”

“Since October 10, at least nine attempts by the United Nations and our partners to bring in tents have been rejected,” he noted.

He said partners working on the food security report that “with the volume of food parcels entering Gaza having increased in recent days, they plan to resume the distribution of two food parcels and one bag of flour across the strip.”

However, Dujarric also noted that distribution in northern Gaza has recently been limited and said: “Earlier this last week, distribution in the North had to be limited to high-energy biscuits and one bag of flour because partners working to bring supplies were facing impediments, including the deprioritization of humanitarian cargo at crossings, customs clearance delays, and a lack of access to northern crossings.”

Highlighting the scale of destruction in the Gaza Strip, Dujarric said teams have “cleared 100,000 tons of debris since the ceasefire came into effect,” but added that “nearly 58 million tons of debris and rubble remain spread across the Gaza Strip, and only half of that amount is currently accessible.”
