Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Aryeh King has sparked widespread condemnation after calling for the killing and expulsion of all staff of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), following the demolition of the agency’s headquarters in occupied East Jerusalem.

In a video published on his Facebook page from the demolition site, King described UNRWA as an “enemy” and declared that its removal from Jerusalem marked a victory. He said that the agency’s staff should be expelled from what he termed the “Land of Israel,” adding that there was “no choice” between them and Israel. King went further by explicitly calling for the destruction and elimination of all UNRWA personnel.

The remarks drew strong condemnation from UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini, who warned that such statements represent a grave moral and legal breach. Lazzarini said the calls to assassinate UN staff signal a dangerous escalation, describing them as evidence of a “loss of moral compass” and the emergence of “a new era of barbarity.”

He added that Israeli officials had already competed to take credit for storming and vandalising UN facilities in occupied East Jerusalem, and that calls to exterminate an entire community of UNRWA staff marked a further, deeply alarming step. Lazzarini stressed that UN member states, bound by the UN Charter, cannot tolerate such incitement from officials of a member state, and called for the issue to be raised and addressed at the highest international levels.

The incident comes amid growing international concern over Israeli measures targeting UNRWA operations in Jerusalem and the wider occupied Palestinian territory, following recent Israeli legislation aimed at curbing the agency’s work.

The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, Philippe Lazzarini, has condemned an Israeli Knesset (Parliament) vote targeting the agency, describing it as “outrageous”.

In a statement published on the X platform on Tuesday, Lazzarini said the legislation constitutes a blatant violation of the mandate granted to United Nations Relief and Works Agency by the UN General Assembly and represents a direct challenge to rulings issued by the International Court of Justice.

He said the legislation grants the Israeli government authority to confiscate UN property in occupied East Jerusalem, including UNRWA’s headquarters and its vocational training centre.

Lazzarini added that the bill explicitly excludes the agency from the immunities and privileges normally afforded to UN bodies, a move he said is intended to end UNRWA’s presence in occupied Jerusalem and sever all contact with its officials.

The UNRWA chief described the legislation as a serious blow to the multilateral system and part of a systematic campaign to discredit the agency and obstruct its role in delivering essential humanitarian assistance and development services to Palestinian refugees.

He stressed that Israel is obligated to act within the framework of the United Nations and its Charter, adding that any objections raised by Israel should be addressed through the appropriate UN deliberative bodies, rather than through unilateral legislative measures.

The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, announced on Tuesday that the agency has begun offering online lessons aimed at reaching around 300,000 children in the Gaza Strip.

Lazzarini explained that UNRWA is expanding its Back to Learning programme in Gaza through a combination of online and in-person education, despite the difficult humanitarian conditions in the territory.

He noted that “more than 25,000 children have now joined our ‘Temporary Learning Spaces’,” stressing, “We will continue increasing the number of such locations.”

Lazzarini emphasised that “literacy and education serve as an antidote to despair and trauma” experienced by children in Gaza.

He praised the efforts of thousands of UNRWA teachers and staff who continue their work despite daily challenges.

He added that the continuation of these programmes reflects UNRWA’s success in fulfilling its humanitarian and developmental mission towards Palestinian refugees under the most difficult circumstances.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has warned that any delay in allowing humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip will cost more lives, as the humanitarian situation remains catastrophic despite the ongoing ceasefire.

Jonathan Fuller, UNRWA’s Acting Director of Communications, said on Thursday that the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel was a welcome but insufficient step toward addressing the deep humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

“The ceasefire is a crucial step, but it is only the beginning of addressing the profound humanitarian crisis facing the people of the Gaza Strip,” Fuller said.

He stressed that the volume of aid entering Gaza must be dramatically increased to meet the overwhelming needs of the population.

Fuller warned that each day of delay in facilitating aid delivery results in more deaths from malnutrition and preventable diseases, adding that the priority now is to prevent the spread of illness and worsening food shortages while supporting displaced Palestinians to rebuild their lives.

The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, said on Thursday that Gaza has become a battleground of a fierce and rampant information war.

Lazzarini stressed that, “Dis-information continues to be used as a tool to distract from the atrocities in the war-torn enclave

On the UNRWA official site, Lazzarini explained that “UNRWA was the first to be targeted, followed by other UN agencies, media outlets, and health institutions”.

He noted that the latest example was the denial of famine in Gaza and the disregard of the findings of the UN’s Independent International Commission of Inquiry, which concluded this week that Israel committed genocide against Palestinians. 

According to Lazzarini, such denial aims at “undermining world experts’ assessments, analysis and at promoting narratives denying atrocities and dehumanizing Palestinians.”

Praising the resilience of reporters, he said: “Meanwhile, the heroic work of Palestinian journalists continues against all odds, as Israel’s military operations expand.”

Since 7 October 2023, Israeli forces, with direct support from the United States and other Western countries, have been waging a destructive war in Gaza. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in the territory, the offensive has so far killed and injured around 231,000 Palestinians.
