US President Donald Trump said he would decide whether to push for the release of imprisoned Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti, a figure many see as capable of uniting Palestinians behind a two-state solution, Anadolu reports.
“I am literally being confronted with that question about 15 minutes before you called … That was my question of the day,” Trump told Time magazine in an interview published Thursday. “So, I’ll be making a decision.”
The comments came as Trump discussed Palestinian leadership, saying Palestinians “don’t have a leader right now, at least a visible leader.”
When asked about Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s potential role in post-war Gaza governance, Trump said, “I’ve always gotten along with him. I’ve always found him reasonable, but he’s probably not.”
Barghouti is a prominent Fatah leader often called the “Palestinian Mandela” for his influence and leadership qualities.
He was arrested by Israel in 2002 and sentenced to five life terms plus 40 years for allegedly directing deadly attacks against Israelis.
Barghouti tops most polls among Palestinians for whom they would vote for in a presidential election, making him a potentially unifying figure for a two-state solution.

Washington has launched a “counter-narcotics operation” with seven warships in international waters in the Caribbean.
President Luiz Inácio da Silva said on Monday, October 20, that foreign interventions in Latin America and the Caribbean could cause “greater damage than what is intended to be avoided” amid the escalation of tension between Venezuela and the United States.
During his speech at the ceremony to hand over credentials to ambassadors at the Itamaraty Palace, Lula did not directly mention Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro or US President Donald Trump, but said that maintaining peace in a region experiencing a period of instability is a priority for Brazil.
“In Latin America and the Caribbean, we are also experiencing a time of growing polarization and instability. Maintaining the region as a zone of peace is our priority. We are a continent free of weapons of mass destruction, without ethnic or religious conflicts. Foreign interventions can cause greater damage than intended,” the president stated.
Last Thursday, October 16, the president publicly defended the neighboring country. “Everyone says that we are going to turn Brazil into Venezuela, and Brazil will never be Venezuela, and Venezuela will never be Brazil, each one will be themselves. What we defend is that the Venezuelan people are the masters of their destiny, and it is not any president of another country who has to give advice on what Venezuela or Cuba will be like,” he said without naming Trump.
In response, Maduro, who considers the action a “threat” to pressure “regime change,” ordered military exercises along the borders. The head of state also announced the activation of three new Comprehensive Defense Operational Zones (ZODI) in the states of Nueva Esparta, Sucre, and Delta Amacuro.
“This is how we are concluding all the necessary preparations, reaching the ideal state for the comprehensive defense of the Homeland,” Maduro said on his Telegram channel.
Venezuelan deputy Raúl Campos, who was in Brazil last Friday, October 17, to discuss the current situation, said that the population is organizing to defeat the “imperialist maneuver”.
“In Venezuela, we are experiencing an unprecedented aggression from US imperialism, which is desperate. It is desperate because all attempts to defeat the Bolivarian government have failed. Right now, the people enjoy complete tranquility and peace. They are dedicated to studying, working, and preparing for the Christmas holidays, but we are also preparing to defend the territory,” Campos declared.

Thousands of demonstrators staged a rally in London on Wednesday to protest US President Donald Trump while chanting pro-Palestine slogans in solidarity with the Gaza Strip
Thousands of demonstrators staged a rally in London on Wednesday to protest US President Donald Trump while chanting pro-Palestine slogans in solidarity with the Gaza Strip, Anadolu reports.
Protesters gathered at Portland Place upon a call by Stop Trump Coalition to oppose Trump’s state visit to the UK and his policies on immigration, climate change and particularly his stance on Gaza.
Carrying various signs, the crowd criticized the British government for the state visit and continued Israeli attacks on Gaza.
Some of the signs read: “Migrants welcome, Trump not welcome” and “No to racism, no to Trump.”
Demonstrators later held a march toward Parliament Square to attend the main rally.
“Donald Trump, you can’t hide, we charge you with genocide,” and “Keir Starmer, shame on you” were chanted by demonstrators.
The US president and first lady Melania Trump landed in London late Tuesday for an unprecedented second state visit to Britain.
The visit came after an invitation extended by King Charles in February during Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to Washington.
It has already been dubbed “historic” and “unprecedented” as Trump became the first elected political leader in modern times to be hosted for two state visits by a British monarch.
The US president and first lady will be hosted by Charles at Windsor Castle for two days of events.
Trump and Starmer will meet Thursday at Chequers, the official country residence of the UK’s prime minister.
On Tuesday, the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory confirmed that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza.
The commission’s report concluded that Israel committed four of the five acts of genocide defined in the “Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.”
The Israeli army has killed almost 65,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in Gaza since October 2023. The relentless bombardment has rendered the enclave uninhabitable and led to starvation and the spread of diseases.
The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

QATAR condemned a blatant “violation” of international law by Israel after Tel Aviv’s military attacked a meeting of Hamas leaders in the capital Doha today, killing at least two of them.
A senior Hamas official told reporters that Israel had targeted the movement’s negotiating team while they were discussing the ceasefire “ideas” put forward by US President Donald Trump.
The Qatari Foreign Ministry said: “We condemn the cowardly Israeli attack that targeted residential quarters of several Hamas political bureau members.
“The criminal assault is a violation of all international laws” and Qatar “will not tolerate any action targeting its security or sovereignty.”
According to initial reports, political bureau head Khalil al-Hayya and financial officer Zaher Jabarin were killed in the strike.
Israeli Channel 11 reported that the Israeli attack had been co-ordinated with Washington.
CLIMATE activists lit up the Houses of Parliament on Tuesday night with messages such as “Tax the Super Rich” and “Make Polluters Pay,” ahead of a major mobilisation next month.
The stunt was organised by the direct action group Climate Resistance, part of the Make Them Pay coalition, which is demanding that the wealthy, along with polluting corporations, cover the costs of phasing out fossil fuels.
The action comes ahead of a mass mobilisation called by the coalition in London on September 20.
Trade unions, climate groups and social justice movements are set to unite for the rally, which is demanding that the government speed up a green transition.
The protest will add to a number of demonstrations expected in the capital earlier that week, in response to US President Donald Trump’s second state visit.
Climate Resistance spokesperson Sam Simons said: “As we gear up for the autumn Budget, this government has a simple choice: tax the super-rich and invest in climate action, or cosy up to Nigel Farage and chuck future generations under the billionaire bus.
Nigel Farage urges you to ignore facts and reality and be a climate science denier like him. He says that Reform UK has received millions and millions from the fossil fuel industry to promote climate denial and destroy the planet.Donald Trump urges you to be a Climate Science denier like him. He says that he makes millions and millions for destroying the planet, Burn, Baby, Burn and Flood, Baby, Flood.
